I don't know how Canteen never showed up on my coffee shop searches, but I'm glad I finally found it! I was surprised the space was so big with the hidden extra room attached to the coffee bar area. It has tons of seating and was perfect for working remotely, although the wifi didn't work very well. It was cozy and had lots of natural light. I tried the canteen girl cold brew and wouldn't get it again. It didn't have much flavor and was more watery than I prefer for coffee. My partner got a vanilla steamer and loved it. read more

I've come to place a handful of times since it's not far from me and is a good place to get a quick breakfast. The woman that works there, I think she is the owner, is beyond unpleasant. I remember the first time I came in there I thought "she is probably having an off day". I have been in the service industry for over 20 years, so I understand an off day can happen. So I ALWAYS like to give service workers the benefit of the doubt. However this woman is ALWAYS like this. Never smiles. Seems annoyed you're even there. If you don't like working there, hire staff, or sell the place. It's clearly not your passion. They seem so miserable all the time. Update: Well after a few good moments here, sadly the last few weeks it's been completely ruined by the utter shite internet. This is clearly a place people come to do stuff on their laptops, but the last 6 times I've been here it's impossible to get anything done if you need a reliable internet connection. Favorite local coffee shop in the uptown neighborhood! I love that I can walk to the shop as it's blocks away from the heart of uptown. I also love that it's never too long of a wait. Super friendly baristas and always consistently good coffee. The cafe is nice and quiet - never too busy. It's a perfect for a spot to work or study for an afternoon without too many distraction. The coffee is superb - some of the best espresso drinks I've had around town. Haven't tried the drip coffee or food options, but am tempted to try some of the bread options. read more

What a cute neighborhood place! This is a super convenient location for those living near Calhoun, Harriet, or Uptown in general. Loved the open, light space in the main room and tons of space and charging outlets in the back room. The tea options were diverse and love the loose leaf variety. I got a pot for $5, which seems pretty reasonable. Hibiscus tea was delicious. They also make some really interesting toasts--topped with hummus, cheese, and more! Decent study space, very quiet and quite cold. 1. Quiet. never busy Every time I came here, they had at most 10 people in the entire establishment. If you want undistracted quiet time to work, this is a good place. 2. Parking Lots of street parking available, which is very convenient. 3. Ambience It is on the dark side, the lamps aren't that bright and overall very clean, sometimes it even reminds you of the hospital cafeteria with its clean walls and not much decoration or color. 4. Coffee Typical 5-6 dollars with tip kinda coffee based products you will get here. I didn't particularly find their products oh so delicious. If you wanna work and need a quick bite, you won't really be happy here. They don't really have much of a choice when it comes to food to eat. read more

Probably the best overall local cafe among many walkable choices in South Uptown / CARAG neighborhood, in terms of quality and atmosphere. Coffee is very good, though slightly more expensive than other places. (Bagged coffee is especially pricey here at $16.95 for 10oz.) Pastries are delicious and always fresh. The toast (and in particular the "toast happy hour") are a unique offering. Canteen is also distinguished for it's late hours and cavernous interior space, with plenty of tables for everyone at any time of day. Probably the best cafe in town to work or study, if you can afford expensive coffee refills. read more

Average sized cafe located right at the corner of Bryant and 33rd St. There is a small parking lot outback which can park about 6 cars. Otherwise, it's street parking in which it shouldn't be hard to find a parking if you come during the late evenings. They serve coffee/expressos and baked goods as well as granola cereal. The peanut butter and chocolate granola is bombdotcom! This place is excellent for late evening studying or perhaps just some chill me time to work on your laptop. The music played during tonight was definitely upbeat enough to keep the atmosphere lively. The guests here also make sure of respecting the atmosphere by not being too loud for others which is key for a low-key cafe. The front of the cafe has a few tables, but you can head on back for more and bigger tables. The benches all have outlets connected to it, so you shouldn't have an issue with trying to find a place to charge your electronics. However, i do wish the bench seatings are a little more comfy. They're wooden benches, so if you don't plan to sit for long hours, then they're doable. read more

At the risk of being completely cliche, I'm going to say it. I'd give this place 6 stars if I could. First of all, TOAST BAR. Fresh baked bread with your choice of available toppings. My faves are the (house made) peanut butter or the turkey and cheese with sriracha aioli. On weekend mornings the have LOTS of options (cooked eggs go fast so, be prompt) and basically, they toast the bread and you create your own noms. Second, Pumpkin bars. Another in house product, available daily till they are sold out. And they are delicious. Same recipe the owner makes for her own family. Next, solid coffee. I'm usually a drip brew for here type of gal, but every drink I've ever had has been good. Finally, lots of seating. It looks deceivingly small but this place seats about 60-70 guests. It's never that busy, but it's nice knowing it's unlikely for you to arrive at any time and not find a space for you to work or chill. Lots of outlets too if you need to plug in. My teens and I are coffee house fanatics. We love good coffee, supporting local joints and searching out new ones to try that have that cozy, peaceful, hipster coffee shop ambience. This one was definitely a hit. The gal taking my order was super sweet and great at making a suggestion when I explained what I was craving. And the cute male barista served with a smile & my drink was pretty despite really only being a double espresso with warmed up heavy cream. And. That. Gets. Me. EVERY. Time. God I love pretty coffee! They had some kind of cool looking toast thing going on but I didn't have the courage to ask about it being my kids already disappeared into the. Exit room for seating. They had umpteen bowls of toppings and even boiled egg that could be added to toast. It looked cool, fun and yum...but dang this current low carb diet I have going on. They have a HUGE room off the side of the main entrance area that was peaceful and would be a great place for working on the laptop...or just lounging and soaking up all the sweet swanky coffee shop good vibes. We landed on this place not knowing that weekends are the time to go for the toast bar. My hubby was a bit disappointed by the slip pickings on bakery items (all from Rustica), and then we saw the true draw--the toast bar. On weekends, you get to choose two thick slices of home-baked bread (they purchase from various bakeries around town to show them all off at given times and always have some from Rustica, too); pop it in the toaster yourself; choose from a wide array of toppings (you can have one boiled egg and and a chunk of avocado included if you want); other toppings included three homemade nut butters, three homemade jams, cinnamon and sugar, and butter--plus a few other items that just didn't stand out as much. On our chocolate bread we chose the blueberry jam and tri-berry jam; on the wheat we chose a couple of nut butters and the boiled egg/avocado. I loved it. My coffee was great, although not cheap I know I am getting a great cup of fair trade and it should not be cheep. By the time we left, the place was packed with folks working at computers, reading books, and even crafting. Plenty of seating--a definite return is in order! read more

This is my new fave coffee shop! I almost don't want to review it because I want to keep it to myself. I love the no frills menu...sometimes I just want less choices. However, the options that they do have are all nice and tasty. The staff are also all very friendly and happy to help! I love the open space with booth tables, large/long wood tables, and generally just a ton of spots to sit and chat with friends or settle down for a good study. I also appreciate that there is a parking lot and pretty decent street parking esp for the area that its in. Will continue to come back for more! read more

Tried out a new study spot today and enjoyed it immensely. Canteen had lots of study friendly tables, a calm clean environment, wifi, windows for natural light and all the essentials to my study needs. It was not too crowded of a shop, with a steady stream of people, which I really liked cause I could always find a table. Plus, they serve toast! I love toast with jam, PB, anything. Coffee - I got my usual miel. Very good coffee, not too strong that I got a caffeine headache. It comes with a small chocolate cookie that was to die for. I could probably eat a bagful of those little cookies. I hope to come back again soon! Hopefully earlier in the day for their toast bar happy hour from 10am-1pm on weekends. One downside is this is not wheelchair accessible, there is one step to get into the shop on both doors. I traveled with a portable ramp and was able to go up the single step. But thats a lot of work and not super safe. I wish it was more accessible so that I can easily come and go in my power wheelchair. read more

A mix of neighborhood residents were there on a Saturday morning: some people working or studying alone, young families, and small groups of friends. Learned as we were leaving that they do a toast bar 'happy hour' starting at 10am with a bunch of toppings set out for you to diy your own toast. I'd try that next time! read more

Canteen offers great coffee and has a toast bar! (I was there on a Sunday morning so I am not sure how often the toast bar is available.) I got a small latte and the barista was very friendly. He also gave me a little chocolate to go with - how cute! The toast bar is $3.50 I believe and has the option of different butters and spreads. I toasted the bread and then put on a thicker butter with cinnamon sugar and it was delicious! The inside is pretty plain and more industrial rather than cozy. There is a back room that offers more space. We had a bigger group so it was nice we could put tables together but almost everybody else that was there was alone. A different time I came here by myself and it was so quiet I felt bad when my phone rang and didn't want to talk on the phone so I wouldn't bother others. Overall, this place has good coffee and pastries. The toast bar is something fun to come in and try as well. I would not say it is a cozy place but it is pretty peaceful and you can get your work done here. read more

Even though this former Urban Bean location has rebranded to Canteen 3235, it still has a special place in my heart. Why? During grad school, I would camp out on both weekend and weekday nights and pound away on my keyboard while sipping on a deliciously cold brew. Honestly, I don't think I would've been able to graduate, if it wasn't for this coffee shop. And, it's really a shame that I've been away for so long ever since I received my degree. Even the barista that I would often see there, who is an Asian brotha with long hair, also recognized my long absence when I stepped in for the first time in months last Sunday: "I haven't seen you in a long time, man!" ***** Anyways, things to know about this neighborhood coffee shop: -Regarding ambience and decor, it's somewhere between cozy (e.g. Coffee Shop NE) and minimalist (e.g. Anelace Coffee). -Menu is simple (and that's good)! Frou-frou drinks are whack and totally bastardize coffee. It parallels my sentiment towards banh mi tacos. Just no. -Lots of the baked goods are from Patisserie 46! -They do classic drinks very well. (Cold press for life!) -Tons of seating. -Two huge six-person plus tables in the second room. -Their peanut butter banana smoothie rocks. -Plenty of parking exist on the street. They also have their own lot. -They play classic hip-hop to house to old school rock. Yes. All of this. -Music won't make your ears bleed aka it's at the right volume. So I've been meaning to try this place for some time because I am fascinating with the thought of the toast bar. I came here book-in-hand looking for a cozy place to spend a leisurely afternoon away from work. Cozy, Canteen 3255 is not. What is it is modern, uncomfortable, a bit sterile and dare I say it, drab. And dark. And, moody? I walked in excited to try a new coffee shop and left feeling disappointed and let down. I asked the barista which baked goods did not contain nuts. She couldn't definitively tell me that a lot of them DIDN'T, so opted for the one thing (chocolate croissant) that she knew absolutely was nut-free. Sat down with my book and was amazing at how many people were working in total silence. I don't mind a quiet coffee shop, I prefer one actually, but in this one, you could hear a pin drop and the back room was probably half-full. Someone's phone rang (and they answered it! RUDE!) and I could feel the glares from others all around me. The final nail in the coffin of this dreary coffee shop was the bathroom. Painted all black with a dingy chair in the corner? It reminded me of the timeout room in preschool. No thanks! I think I'll come back once more to try the toast bar for myself. But word to the wise - it's not more expensive ($4.00) making it that much more potentially ridiculous. read more

Yes, Canteen has fantastic Dogwood coffee and offers a great selection of baked goods. Yes, it's a great place to bring a laptop and get work done. But let's get real and talk about their recent controversy: starting a gourmet toast program. It's been a heated Yelp discussion for quite some time (see: http://www.yelp.com/topic/minneapolis-toast-bar#HEXEk4liUZGaJ0uITEnAQw), and since I could eat bread for basically every meal and die happy, I've been a pro-toast bar advocate through and through. You can order toast at Canteen any day of the week for $2.50 per order + $0.75 per topping, but the best deal is offered on Saturdays/Sundays, when 2 slices of toast + DIY toppings is just $3.50. Unfortunately, the process was fairly confusing - as confusing as putting bread in a toaster can be, anyway. First, I chose my bread: last weekend, they offered currant walnut sourdough, baguette, and multigrain, all from Patisserie 46. Bread was sliced, then handed to me for toasting. There were 2 double toasters available, but we were informed that we'd blow a fuse if all of the slots were in use at the same time. Also, the slices of bread were generous (no complaints there!), but they were too big to fit in the toaster, so if you didn't cut them in half, you had to toast TWICE. So...we waited. Things got crowded and awkward for a while. My suggestion would be to have one of the employees toast the bread before giving it to the customer - I get it that it might not be the easiest for the barista to multitask all over the place, but it would really streamline the process when the place is busy. After I got through that really awkward stage, that's when the fun began (It's pretty weird that I consider toast topping "fun". Please disregard my weirdness). The options: two different butters (Hope Creamery and one from a nearby Wisconsin farm), Beez Kneez buckwheat honey, cinnamon-sugar, mashed avocado and sea salt, maple almond butter, peanut butter, strawberry balsamic black pepper jelly, and raspberry green tea jam. Pro tip: put a little of everything on your plate and get the heck out of that cramped space - you can top your toast once you've sat down. Everything was, of course delicious and fantastic. Clearly, the bread and accoutrements are top notch. I just think there are a few kinks to work out if this toast thing really catches on. read more

I've been to this coffee shop several times, and I don't know why I kept returning. The coffee and espresso are fine, nothing special. The decor is clean and streamlined, and overall, the environment is pleasant enough. But the biggest issue is the staff. I've encountered nothing but rude service out of the maybe ten times I've been to this shop. I kept telling myself it was a fluke, but despite who the barista was, I was treated with such disdain. Each time I felt like a burden. I was never greeted, when it was my turn at the counter the barista would walk away (every. single. time.), and although others were treated respectfully, I couldn't help but think I wasn't a part of some secret club or I didn't have the password to be treated as a good paying patron. They have a toast bar, which I don't really understand, but people seem to like it. There's always quite a gathering in the shop, so maybe there is something about me that just doesn't quite fit in to their vibe. My friend and I met for coffee today, both of us had never been here. The coffee was great, and I really loved the look of the shop. BUT the barista acted like we were the biggest pains in the ass, even though all we did was order lattes, no special instructions, and a croissant. We were just kind of like "whatever", and sat down to catch up. But then I decided I'd like some jam- oh boy, what a favor to ask. I had to break up chat time with his friend for it. We weren't looking to have our buns kissed, but you would have thought we walked in to this guy's house and started ordering him around. I've thoroughly enjoyed the few times I've been to this coffee shop. I wouldn't say the drinks are mind-blowing, but they're good and I like that the specialties aren't overly sweet. I'm not sure what kind of tea they use, but the chai latte I had here was one of subtle sweetness and was perfect to sip on while talking with a friend, I really enjoyed it. I thought the London Fog I ordered a separate time could have used more vanilla, but again, still perfectly enjoyable. The coffee itself is Dogwood, which is amazing and I'm really happy I can get it somewhere other than their shop in the Calhoun Mall. The shop itself is so nice. It's open and bright, I love how big the windows are and I think the decor is super cozy. As a person who grew up going to camps and being outdoors, I think they captured that feeling pretty well without being over the top. The best word to describe the general atmosphere would be "comfortable." The times I've been there the baristas have been polite and perfectly friendly, didn't get a bad vibe at all. This is definitely the place I'd choose if I needed to get out of my house and get some work done or just relax and read a book. As someone who goes to a lot of cafes but more for the ambience and less for the coffee (all the good coffees taste the same to me), this place was really great. I love the dark hardwood they have on the floors. The design is minimalist but cozy. They have plenty of seating - I went on a Sunday evening so there weren't many people, but if there were they have another room in the back. Plenty of windows to let in the sun and if you heat up easily, almost every table has an a/c vent blowing VERY cold air. It's a great place to work, study, meet up with friends. In the 1-2 hours I was there at least 2-3 people came in to say hello to the owner and chat. Seems like a great neighborhood joint, on the hipster side of things. Will definitely come back when I have more appetite for some yummy pastries and need some focus time. read more
