Howl is one of those boutiques that makes wandering Bayfield even more enjoyable!…read more The shop has a great vibe and selection of clothing, outdoor gear, and accessories. I visited during the colder months and was impressed by how much well-chosen winter gear they had--cozy layers, warm accessories, and practical pieces that still look stylish. I ended up leaving with a warm winter hat!

Wow, hard to believe no one has reviewed Howl yet…read more We visited Bayfield over Labor Day, staying at a B&B down the road. Before leaving Minneapolis, we booked a half-day yacht cruise for Saturday morning, which turned out to be lovely. The reason I mention the cruise is that our captain also owns Howl (as well as the Howl Adventure Center just south of town). We stopped into the retail store the following morning as we dodged raindrops, enjoying a chat with the captain and his family. I would characterize the clothing and equipment on the shelf here (as well as the Adventure Center) as "upper end" although insufficient to completely supply many an outdoor trek. That said, the equipment on sale was interesting, reasonably priced, not overly "touristy" (although there were some items geared to the visiting tourist). As an aging backpacker, it was very difficult to not pick up a few items, but I've vowed not to buy more "stuff" until I get my knees replaced! I did succumb to a few bicycling accessories at the Adventure Center, however! Howl Clothing is right downtown, just a block away from the docks and right across the street from the Bayfield Inn. It's worth stopping in to browse, and we will use their sailing services when next we visit during the summer.

I can't say enough about Stormy Kromer caps! I saw, and tried on, my first Stormy Kromer cap at the…read moreNonesuch Gallery in Ontonagon, Michigan several years ago, and didn't buy it. (I did buy a different Stormy Kromer that day, a most useful summer work cap that they no longer make.) The following winter, I was upset I didn't buy that classic lumberjack plaid cap! I discovered stormykromer.com and ordered my first winter Stormy Kromer, a gray one that kinda goes with everything. I loved it so much, I have since ordered and own about 8 or 9 Stormy Kromer hats and caps, including a bucket hat (officially the "SK Cruiser" made from duck) that I really like wearing when I'm shooting photos. Baseball caps don't work for photographers when they have to turn the camera sideways. I love my SK Cruiser because the brim crunches out of the way if I turn the camera sideways. Stormy Kromer caps are available at retailers across the county, and they also make custom caps. You can order a "Keep 'er Movin'" embroidered Stormy from manitowocminute.com. If you watch "Outdoor Wisconsin" on public TV, you've seen Dan Small wearing Stormy Kromer caps, too. I bought an official Stormy Kromer in Rhinelander with a Hodag embroidered on the ear flap. Ear flap? Yup! The main feature of the winter Stormy Kromers is a flap that pulls down over your ears when you need it and folds back up when you don't need it. Almost all the products are made in Ironwood or a second plant in Wisconsin. The quality is top notch, winter caps are made from a wool/nylon blend and are felt lined to keep your noggin' warm - and your ears with that handy flap! Caps are sized, guaranteeing a snug fit and so it won't blow off your head - a demand Stormy made himself when he had his wife make his first cap in 1903. Customer service is also top notch - orders are shipped in a short turnaround time. Wrong size? Exchanges are also handled very quickly, I know this because I mistakenly ordered the wrong size and they quickly corrected the error, and I stress, MY error. When you cap arrives, it includes a nice envelope that contains your packing list and a signed, thank you note from the person who packed your order. Oh, yes, each item has a serial number that you can register for a free insurance policy. I actually look forward to colder weather so I can wear my Stormy caps again!

They replied via e-mail within hours and said "No problem" come on down. My other choice was going to be Men's Warehouse but after looking at the horrible reviews on their Duluth outlet I made up my mind to trust Mainstream Fashions for Men. What a great decision that was. I arrived at 10:00am and after just a couple questions he had pulled out a suit coat to try on and the second one fit perfect. Without asking my measurements he pulled out a pair of pants that fit perfectly and then did the same with a collared shirt. I was done in 15 minutes and as I was leaving the store he was already taking my suit to their alterations store across the street and he notified me by text when they were done. Wow, if only every store offered that kind of customer service. I can't recommend this place enough and I found the prices to be very reasonable. Alterations were included and he gave me a nice discount for being a Veteran. Thanks Mainstream Fashions for Men for a great looking suit that fits perfect and didn't break the bank. Mark
