Don't pay a premium for Jorge's. Not good for vintage furniture, poor communication, but reasonable craftsmanship. If you want your furniture restored to original design quality this is not the place to go. Jorge's used the wrong size foam for our mid-century modern couch, which resulted in cushions that don't fit the couch properly and are literally uneven with the floor. Our side bolsters now sit at a diagonal to the arm of the couch rather than level with it, because the rear of the seat cushion slopes downward about 1.5". The back of the couch bulges awkwardly and misses the proportions of the original design. Because Jorge's charges significantly more than other upholstery companies, we spent more than twice as much for what in the end is an OK couch with several aesthetic issues. The fabric is visibly pulled unevenly and the lines are unclean. There are ripples in the fabric. To be fair, we attempted to work with Jorge's to restore our couch without using flame retardants, so our project was a challenge. But Jorge's was not up to this challenge and charged us for the special materials but did not provide the top quality work that we paid for. I believe that Alex tries hard, but this company just doesn't provide a level of service to justify a premium price. The team made design decisions without communicating with us, and when we questioned why there was not more attempt made to match the original design we were told that the techniques used were more "modern" and were done to improve the couch. If you are the type of person who wants decisions made for you, are not concerned particularly about how your furniture looks, and can negotiate a fair market price, I think Jorge's does an acceptable job. So in that sense, I think Jorge's is a solid choice for some customers, don't get me wrong. But for those who desire a specific outcome and are hoping to find an artisan which will respect their hopes and collaborate with them toward a delightful outcome, I would say look elsewhere. read more

If I could give more stars I would! No Joke! There aren't enough words to express my experience with Upholstery By Jorge's. To start their customer service is impeccable! Their turn around time, was insanely fast and workman-ship....excellent! I have a 4 year old leather couch. The cushions were worn down but it is the only couch we have, so it wasn't surprising. I didn't feel I was ready to buy new, but instead just have cushions replaced...PLUS....With guests coming to our home in a week, I needed this resolved so that people didn't feel like they were sitting on the floor. I made several calls and the majority were either, not responsive or couldn't meet my ridiculous (which is was) need (to have this completed in less than 6 days). When I called Jorge's, I expected to leave a message because, I was calling after hours....BUT they answered my call. They never hesitated on my request....Infact, I was able to have my cushions replaced and delivered in LESS THAN 48 hours! WHAT! It was crazy. How is that possible? Well it is possible when you work with Jorge's. So between their customer service, their workman-ship and their price....I can't say enough and only wish I had more things to send to them. This little store front on Ashland is pretty straightforward. You go in and there's lots of furniture, fabric and shells of chairs and sofas. Near the back of the room they have a staple gun, stuffing and there's usually someone working on a piece. They will pretty much do anything for you at a very reasonable price. We bought two matching chairs in turquoise upholstery. We love them. But so do the cats. I went in yesterday to see if they could reupholster them and they remembered me from a year ago. They offered to just swap out the old material with some they have from remnants so that I didn't have to buy all new stuff. Also, if you do buy fabric, they'll refer you to a wholesaler so you can save over half off the price they would normally charge you to get it. They're really nice and will work with you. I could not have had a better experience! I called Jorge's Wednesday morning and told Al that I had a chair with a (dog-chewed) hole in it that we needed to get reupholstered. Coincidentally, he had a pick-up scheduled in my neighborhood that same morning, so I ran home to meet him and hand off the chair. He told me it would probably take two to four weeks (which seemed pretty reasonable to me) - but then I got a call late Thursday afternoon saying that because it was a relatively small job, they'd decided to take care of it before tackling some bigger jobs - and they dropped it off mid-day Friday. More importantly, they did a *great* job; the chair looks brand new. Al also gave me some great (and budget-conscious) advice about some work that I need to have done on my sofa. Excellent experience overall. We contacted them after a 6-month lab puppy tore a corner of my leather sofa up. They asked some questions, evaluated some pictures, explained the process (realistically what can and cannot be done), quoted a price, and scheduled a time to come out. Alex and his upholster came to our home after hours and were extremely courteous, professional, and timely! They had that baby covered in about an hour. They brought with them two different types of leather to ensure the best quality and I'm telling you the gentlemen who did the job was top notch! So efficient but produced quality work. I was thoroughly impressed! Only downside is that it did take about a week to get solid follow up on costs and day to come out but that is to be expected with a smaller, family-run business such as this. I would wait again to get the quality of service and craftsmanship that these gentlemen produce. I trusted Alex and his crew from the moment I met them. Very satisfied with the results, honestly you cannot even tell it was ever chewed up by a furry little devil. These guys are great! My rabbit ripped through a seam on a large cushion on a new expensive wrap-around couch. Effectively, the rabbit successfully sabotaged a big purchase for us and made the couch look like a second-hand worn down piece of furniture. I called around to different upholsterers with pictures - some people didn't want to deal with it, others talked about completely recovering the cushion for 100s of dollars. What I loved about my interaction with Alex - he was down-to-earth, approached the problem simply - (fixing the seam) - with really terrific pricing. I bought a sofa sleeper from Crate and Barrel back in 2014. It cost around $2200 at the time, and I foolishly believed that given the price tag, there was no way it could be uncomfortable. I was wrong. Within months the cushions were sagging, and rotating them didn't help. Fast forward to 2018, my couch had become painful to sit on. I finally decided I needed to either try re-stuffing the cushions or get a new couch. I just received my three re-stuffed cushions from Jorge's Upholstery, and omigosh, it's like sitting on a new couch. The cushions came back more thick, dense, firm/supportive than the original cushions ever were. I cannot feel the sleeper part of the sofa at all, and the cushions actually stay in place when I get up after sitting. The frame and sleeper construct were actually built quite well, the original cushions were poorly constructed. I'm so glad I opted to have the cushions re-stuffed. I do like the aesthetics of my couch, and with the new cushions Jorge's Upholstery provided, I will get to enjoy this couch for many more years and get my $$$s worth out of it. read more

I am very particular and even had printed out pictures with multiple instructions for the most recent chair (poor Alex), but he didn't bat an eye and just took my multiple page instructions and went on his way to make our chair looks fabulous. He even called a few times asking for clarification or to explain himself when something wasn't going to work-which I appreciate. My sofa had a chaise lounge cushion that rested on the sofa and on an ottoman. I wanted to have this cushion reconfigured to a regular cushion plus a cushion for the ottaman. In addition I wanted the foam in my other sofa cushions replaced as they had compacted so much. Al from Jorges came out to look things over and gave me a quote. We agreed on a price and his team came on Monday to pick up the cushions and they were completed and delivered on Tuesday night. The work done looks great. They worked with me to find the best solution for the firmness level of the cushions... I thought I wanted the most firm, but was counseled into going with a level down. But in the end, they created a sandwhich of firm enveloped by slightly less firm and it's great and I hope will last well. I recommend them highly. Edited to add that my review was at first 4 stars because I was disappointed to not have received any paperwork or receipt for this transaction. The only reason this is not a 5 star review is that it is hard to get in touch with Jorge's. You call a cell phone and the voice mail was always full when I called. So you can't leave a msg. I prefer easier communication so I would just suggest they improve on that so customers can get in touch. Otherwise this would've been a 5 star review because the footstool looks fabulous. I needed a button repair on a tufted antique leather chair and Alex brought a couple technicians out to my apartment to do it on site. They manufactured a bunch of different buttons for me and the repair looks great. I called this company to get a quote for reupholstering my LOG FURNITURE at my cabin on a remote farm 2 and one half hours away from Chicago. I had a quote from a "local" company that was higher that what I payed for the furniture when I bought it in 2000!! The job consisted of re-upholstering NINE cushions as well as providing NEW Cushions. The furniture is made of "fallen" Aspen Logs and is HUGE. I felt the original cushions were worn out and was really unsure about what was required. I called "Upholstery by Jorge" and spoke with Alex. Alex and his father Jorge run the place and Alex really knew his stuff. He directed me to "Fishman's Fabrics" where Gregg Fishman quickly assisted me in finding exactly what we needed. Alex and Gregg were able to work with my written dimensions and photos sent via e-mail to determine fabric and cushion requirements. Alex was very personable and knowledgeable. He really made this EASY. More amazing was that Alex and Jorge picked up the old cushions and delivered the final product in less that 3 weeks, I was amazed by the service and commitment here!! Our Farm Cabin is in the middle of nowhere. The final product is BEAUTIFUL AND MORE COMFORTABLE that when the furniture was new!!
