I had been on anxiety medicines again since last 3 years and seeing a therapist who had sown the seed of meditation in my mind when I started reading books about it and practicing with cell phone apps. Once I started my sessions with Neeru and practiced diligently I started seeing changes surprisingly very quickly. Neeru is great teacher who provides the complete context of all your questions and talks you through the things on your mind and how to focus on getting rid of them via meditation. My presence of mind was getting better and the biggest change was my heart palpitations completely stopped within 4 months. The most at peace I have ever felt was when I was doing the steps. I went for a year and only got to level two but in doing so let go of so much. Meditation isn't something you can set aside and pick up whenever you feel bad. Your brain is a muscle and needs exercise or it will return back to the state it was before you started meditating. This is where I am now. If I had the means to go back and start again I would. It is a game changer.

Prior to my first class with Caylen, I was interested in starting a meditation practice but having a very hard time with it. Physically sitting still and mentally letting go **aren't exactly** my strong suits. And that's when a friend pointed me toward Caylen's classes and recommended that I might want to try something that incorporated a bit more movement. My initial reaction was "Yeah, okay, it couldn't hurt." That, and I got a good laugh out of the well-worn joke describing Tai Chi as, "Old people sneaking up on trees." A half-dozen classes later, I still laugh at the joke... but I'm now very appreciative of what I've learned from the "Storm Tai Chi" classes. If you're looking for some sort of over-the-top, high energy, highly regimented class... this might not fit the bill. But if you want to learn about Tai Chi (and although this might sound silly, about yourself as well, in both a physiological and mindful sense) I'd encourage anyone to attend one of Caylen's classes. They are informal, but exceedingly informative. The instructional style is low key but amazingly insightful. And the number of times I find myself using (sometimes subtlety, sometimes very overtly) the things from a lesson in everyday circumstances often catches me by surprise. Be it something to do with breathing, or awareness, or being present, or even pushing things away or pulling things towards me (either physically or mentally)... it's ALL GOOD. And yes, I even find that since working with Caylen, some of the more traditional meditation practices are now easier, much easier, to get my mind around. All because of my time spent learning how to "sneak up on trees". Update: Caylen's outdoor Alki classes are over for the year, but will resume in the spring. It amazes me that the gentle movements work my entire body and gives me strength and flexibility that had been diminishing, not to mention the mind and spirit connection. Being outdoors and exercising is a refreshing experience and contributes to the enjoyment of learning this ancient art. Vadim is a kind and thoughtful teacher and really knows his stuff. I always leave the classes happy that I made the commitment to my health and well-being with Vadim's help. Go talk to Marco if your body is in pain or if you are working to become a more embodied artist/designer/performer/entrepreneur. He teaches individual and group sessions in Alexander Technique with a particular sensitivity towards people doing creative work. Like refining how you hold your tools over long, repetitive work sessions to prevent pain and to create a deep connection with your work. Let me explain why I am so enamored with this approach... We are all stuck with our bodies. As much as I would just like to leave my (now middle aged) body behind when it's hurt or tired - my body is always there. I have also always been attracted to training my body for performance in sports and theater. When I meditate, my body is a site of reflection. If I wasn't stuck with my body then I probably wouldn't enjoy my life as much. My good friend Marco gets bodies and all all of their painful and exuberant complexity. He has deep insight in how bodies move, how they express, how they are linked to the mind, and how they express our souls. I have known Marco for nearly a decade now and gotten to witness his journey from being a successful business guy who loved design and endurance sports into now perhaps the only person I can think of who explicitly linking the insights of Alexander Technique to the labor of the creative class. If you are unfamiliar with Alexander Technique it is just a bodywork/movement training method. It has been around forever and used often to help performers/dancers/singers/etc develop more presence. People also practice it to get rid of back pain etc. I like things like Pilates, Feldenkrais, Rolfing and yoga well enough but if I want something more than just a fitness or bodywork regime...something designed to support my creative practice and me as a creative person...then I want something like Body Economics. Marco's take on Alexander Technique is designed for creative people. He offers local sessions as his Los Angeles studio, universities, and online. I did a series of online sessions with Marco (I live in NYC) when I was having chronic back pain from working on a computer too much. He was able to provide me with feedback over live video on how I was sitting and standing that changed my understanding of my body. I was able to unwind some knots internally and breath more deeply. In the end I came away with some new tools for self-diagnosing my body when it gets out of wack and ways to put it back in alignment. Oh and Marco can speak Italian if that is useful to you. I was so impressed by the way Marco could feel what was being released in my body and gage what was happening with his hands just as I felt it. I really appreciate this return to the building blocks of how we move, learning how to use our bodies to their full potential. These are tools our culture doesn't teach us to master as we grow up, and it seems like such an obvious hole in our development. We use our bodies for everything. After one session I can see the potential, especially in my art, to bring me back into the process and the "doing" and away from the mind-chatter and tension that builds up in my body as a result.
