I've had 2 packages in the last couple of weeks delivered to the completely wrong address. I've completely lost confidence in UPS delivery.

I called UPS yesterday at 9:00 AM to schedule a pickup of a time-sensitive test kit that was being shipped overnight. I got a pickup confirmation number and set the box out for a "No later than 5:00 PM Pick Up". It is now 9:15, THE NEXT MORNING, and the box is still sitting and waiting for pick up. So much for overnight delivery of a time-sensitive test kit. I would have dropped it off at the customer center 5 minutes from my house, but the Robertsdale UPS Customer Center will not unlock their door to accept packages until 4:00 PM, which is not convenient for me or anybody else who has a life. My only complaint is, why does your staff park in front of the drop-off box? It defeats the purpose of the drive-up drop box to have to get out and walk around your employee's vehicles. read more

Specialized shipment plus incompetent employee equals frustration and lack of revenue for UPS. That's the consistent equation at the UPS-owned distribution center in Robertsdale that is open to customers from 4:00-6:00 Monday through Friday. Well, almost. Because the same incompetent employee decides when she wants to unlock the door. So here's the story: Per the ATF.gov website, firearms can be shipped/mailed from a non-licensee (as in Federal Firearm License) resident of one state to another non-licensee resident of that same state. A non-licensee is also allowed to ship/mail to any licensee. (Long guns can be sent via USPS but handguns must be sent via common carrier or contract delivery service, you know, FedEx or UPS.) I checked the state laws and there's no prohibition or restrictions beyond Federal statutes. Ammunition can also be shipped. So I went to the UPS website and discovered, yes, indeedy, everything should go smoothly for shipping from the Customer Center (NOT 'The UPS Store' or Staples). And I quote: UPS accepts packages containing firearms (as defined by Title 18, Chapter 44, and Title 26, Chapter 53 of the United States Code) for transportation only (a) between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, and licensed collectors (as defined in Title 18, Chapter 44 of the United States Code), and government agencies and (b) where not otherwise prohibited by federal, state or local law (i) from an individual to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector; and (ii) from a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to an individual. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But guess what? The overwhelmingly superior female behind the counter said 'No license, no shipment'. But wait! She said the manufacturer I was trying to return the firearm to was probably in her book. No, wait! The first copy of the manufacturer's FFL was out of date. So was the second. The third expired in December. Mind you, the address I was trying to send the firearm to was THE SAME ADDRESS ON ALL THREE EXPIRED LICENSES. But no! The female guffawed and said 'Hey, they're not my laws, they're the Fed's.' Uh, no. They're something you either made up so you don't have to work or some other incompetent trained you in their image so you could perpetuate the ignorance and you're too unmotivated to even look at UPS's or ATF's regulations. And it gets better. Two gunsmiths I spoke with later that afternoon know all about this employee. She refuses to allow them to ship ammunition. And doesn't have a clue what this quote applies to: UPS accepts for transportation such ammunition as constitutes "cartridges, small arms," as defined in 49 C.F.R. § 173.59. All other allowable ammunition shipments are accepted only on a contractual basis, and must be prepared under the rules for a fully regulated hazardous material. Ammunition cannot be shipped where it exceeds 12.7 mm (50 caliber or 0.5 inch) for rifles or handguns or 8 gauge for shotguns. The package may not exceed 66 lb. (30 kg). The shipper must comply with and must ensure that each shipment containing ammunition complies with all federal, state and local laws applicable to the shipper, recipient, and package, including, without limitation, age restrictions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- She hasn't a clue, doesn't care, isn't interested.
