this review is for the AMF's and not the atmosphere.. Thursday night during the summer in a college town = not much fun a few AMF's + a sleepy college town = a good time with the girls! My fave decor item is the sign in the womens bathroom stating, "Did you take your pill today" i need one of those in my kitchen! If you are wondering what an AMF is it tastes like a blue popsicle (the liquid kind that you have to freeze) It has gin, vodka, blue Curacao and sprite... yummy!!! Stopped in for a drink with two friends after attending the Indiana b-ball game. We had been in line for a drink for all of 1 minute when an employee of the bar comes over to us and says that "I have been told that you need to leave". We had not spoken to a single person and had not had anything to drink at that point in the evening. None of us could figure out what that was all about but needless to say, we won't be back. Not great. There's some games to play, which I am glad for (pool, darts), a balcony, which is nice as long as dummies aren't smoking dumb cigarettes...the pool room generally smells like all the old beer that has soaked into all the wood, the dart boards require you to relinquish your I.D. during use because of the usual crowd, carding is extensive and your information is recorded in a computer (photo of your I.D.) which is very indicative of past problems....it's gross, cheap and petty. Typical college bar, and it's kind of gross-- but it's awesome for hanging out with friends and playing darts or pool. Cheap drinks. Try the AMF. It's a super sweet mixed drink that is VERY alcoholic and basically a btown classic. There's no dancing, or super loud music, which is a plus. Try to ignore the women's underwear and bras hanging from the ceiling, and try not to leave sober. read more

I may have a biased opinion about Upstairs, because I spent my 21st here and had such a fun time. I love the deck outside, the overall bar has a fun and chill atmosphere. Also, you're missing out if you come to upstairs and don't get the AMF, they're dangerous but amazing read more

I patiently waited in line for 20 minutes to get into the bar and when i was at the top of the stairs 1 of my "friends" comes up the stairs and says follow me so i do. The curly headed kid scanning cards let my "friend" cit everyone but did not let me in, which was fine for me. I had been waiting for 20 min and was 5 feet from the door, and I went and stood back in my spot. Then the guy scanning cards asked the 2 girls up next in line if they had seen me and they said no so the guy tried to kick me out. I asked the other people around and the guy that i was standing behind said that i had been standing behind him the whole time. The scanner guy didnt listen and kicked me out. This is bullshit service. The guy that you have scanning the id's is biased and unreasonable and also literally letting some people cut and kicking out others who had permission from that same guy to follow him. He shouldn't be working the job he is, terrible service. read more

People get progressively better looking as the hours roll on at this bar. Newer bar top was taken from Assembly Hall which is super cool. Cheap drink specials. Watch the steps to leave. They are the same damn steep and weathered steps that were there when I went there for undergrad. Someone order me an AMF... read more

Wayy to crowded and frat/sorority heavy for my taste.

This place is fantastic for locals and regulars. For the newcomers, beware, it is SO TINY, and gets so hot and sticky later on in the night. Get their early and camp out at the bar. Miles friendlier than their nightlife neighbor. Famous for their bright blue AMF drinks, but are also quick to serve other drinks that are requested. Bartenders may be busy, but never rude. Even when customers are rude, they still keep their cool. Love that they switched the men and women's bathrooms to give the ladies some more room! read more

This place, total dump. If you have never been, don't bother. Negative vibe and poor service. One of the worst bars in Bloomington.

Drinks here are strong, cheap, and they still have pool!!! Rare for most places in btown. I like this place but tend to go early or late as it gets packed and isn't too fun then... AMF night draws a younger crowd than usual, but on their more off nights I really like going, it still gets busy just not as crazy. People get really drunk there but seem to compose themselves better than at most drunk bars in Bloomington. Watts makes it worth the visit everytime though... read more

Middle of the road, in my opinion. Just like most of the other bars on Kirkwood, except they have darts. But if it's busy you can forget about getting a good round of darts in; the place gets full and people don't seem to understand that walking in front of a person throwing darts is a bad idea. After being seated, I waited 45 minutes to get ANY service. Finally, I figured out who my waitress was and when I tried to order a drink, she rolled her eyes and held up a finger shaking off my request. I found multiple bugs on my table, which I tried to explain to my waitress, who was dismissive yet again (this should be investigated by heath control). I then was in the middle of finishing my drink and was approached by the bouncer who told me I had 2 minutes to order another or else I would be kicked out. I waited 30 min after asking my waitress for my tab, finally I was in the middle of paying my bill and was approached again (by the same bouncer) and told to "you haven't ordered another, you need to get the **** out." I tried to explain that I was paying, but was talked over and unable to explain that i was waiting for so long to get my bill, as I was trying to leave. Overall horrible, inpatient, and rude service in which I hope no one will ever put their money into again. read more

Great place for IU Memorabilia. Old football programs take up every open space on the walls. However, this place gets PACKED late at night. Very hard to move around and the bathroom lines get huge. If you go, make sure you try an AMF. read more

Generally, a great bar. But it has one big flaw. This bartender Chris is quite rude. He intentionally mixes unique drink orders poorly, and chastises birthday celebrators for being too loud even when the environment is already obnoxious. But he does his best to cultivate a cult of personality based on his looks, even though none of us regulars buy into it. read more

The Upstairs Pub is my favorite bar in Bloomington over my years at IU. It has a great second story patio overlooking Kirkwood, perfect for warm days or a quick smoke. It's also one of the only bars in Bloomington with pool tables and darts. The Pub boasts a great beer selection, daily specials and who could forget the would famous AMF? To top it off, great bartenders and staff make it the best spot in Bloomington any day of the week. read more

Four stars. Great bar. Except for the heat. It gets to about 107 degrees on a busy night. Also dropped Michael Shea's beer from the tap and replaced it with PBR. (can go both ways i suppose). Always a good time, however, and the AMF's are hard to beat when it comes to maximizing alcohol for the cheapest price. It's pretty fun with the deck and pool tables. The only complaint is the price of the booze.
