This is a great movie theater to visit, which in fact has been here for a number of years. The first time hearing about this place is when one of my friends invited me to see one of his films, which they allow private screenings, which is pretty cool. There is only one theater room that holds a lot of seats, but only one-row seats from left to right. For our purpose, the party had plenty of room. The lobby is pretty tiny, with not a lot of space, so do take caution. The concession stand also offers snacks as well as a plus. This review is for the Saugerties location @ the beautiful Orpheum. My husband and I haven't been to the movies in literally years - too expensive to be honest, and we never felt like we were getting a true movie experience. Until we decided to finally go see a movie @ the Orpheum just down the street from where we live in Saugerties. Mia, Hannah, and Jamie were SO friendly when we walked in & ordered concessions. They are truly essential to the experience we had last night & we walked into our theater more excited than we were before. The popcorn and snacks were as affordable as the tickets and the popcorn was fresh and tasty. The aesthetics of this theater are on point, and sound was perfect for the horror movie we watched. A lovely experience from start to finish - we are hoping to become members. Thank you Upstate Films for making us fall back in love with date night @ the movies. This adorable Old-fashioned little theater is tucked away in the village of Rhinebeck. It is clean and cozy, nothing fancy. They seem to have a lot of independent films that you don't see another theaters. I highly recommend them... If you see a movie that you were interested in going to , give them a try read more

I saw an indie film here while eating popcorn with real butter, drinking a cola with real sugar, and holding a ticket that was torn off a roll of tickets. The people working there were really nice as well. The bathrooms are hidden behind the screens (not in the lobby, which is a bit small and awkward to maneuver through when crowded), but overall a quaint little theatre that I would frequent if I lived in the area. read more

Lovely local cinema featuring a fabulous selection of films. They could do better Covid precautions though -- at the very least, more efforts at distancing -- whether through prominent signage, verbal instructions at the box office, marking off rows, or an usher. (Only one of the pre-movie slides mentioned 6 feet distance in small type - something patrons will not see until after well after settling in a seat.) Result: theater was only 30% full, but nearly everyone sat in the core area, directly in front and behind each other, when there were plenty of seats in the theater for more distance. Presumably everyone had been vaccinated as people were snacking and no one was wearing masks - but who knows? Something to keep in mind when deciding whether to spend two hours indoors among a group of unmasked strangers sitting two feet away. We have enjoyed this wonderful theater for 25 years and appreciate the challenges of running a business during Covid, especially after the long lockdown. We just hope they can do a bit more to operate safely while the new Delta variant is emerging. read more

Inexpensive. That's the only reason it gets a star. Most of the worthwhile fare that they offer eventually comes to Regal within a week or two. The chairs are tiny and super uncomfortable as they're made of clunky wood. The actual viewing experience is reminiscent of watching the projector in the school auditorium when we were in 4th grade. The worst part though.... the unforgivable part.... every single time I've been here, my experience was ruined by people that talk loudly throughout the entire movie while loudly unwrapping and eating pungent snacks and sandwiches they've brought from home. You know who I'm talking about. It's not politically correct to say it, but my life experience had taught me that they are the worst film going segment of the population. I won't say who I'm talking about but it does rhyme with bold greaple. read more

I love this theater. The cost of membership, the cost of tickets, the cost of refreshments is all on point. Add that to the fantastic films that they show, and you've got a winner. Fine films at great local cinema. Great programming, great vibe.

Getting use to living outside the city didn't come easy to me. It took a full two years to say - yep, I'm really very happy in Rhinebeck..... What made it for me was that the place I live in is walking distance to town and most of all to the movie theater....two shows at a time .. if you're a city person and you like Indie films you have to travel to the Angelica...here we get Indie films, and regular good quality films...imagine we pay $6 for entrance fee (non-members $8)...we're surrounded by restaurant after restaurant.....parking is never an issue if you come from afar - free lots all through town and so many spaces Back to the movie house: the staff...love them all. They smile and they make popcorn and sell lots of goodies. It's an all around friendly atmosphere - just remember to turn off your cellphones! P.S. The town swimming pool and walking to the fairgrounds was another sell. read more

You want indie films? You come here in the Hudson Valley. It's been a few years since I've been here but I live a 2 minutes away and I will come here more often. I appreciate indie films because they're always original and ballsy when it comes to material. This is the closest thing we have to the ANGELIKA FILM CENTER in this area. I do neglect the sheer closeness of this place. The first movie I saw here was The Royal Tennenbaums...what better first movie in a well-known indie theatre for one to see? I will make a much better effort to attend several of the screenings they have here with the Woodstock Film Festival. read more

Love, love, love, love....what can I not say about this place? It's quaint, it's charming, and it always has those films that you've heard about being "the best ____ of 20_ _" and this place offers you an opportunity to enjoy organic coffee and cookies and see it on the big screen. I live about 50 minutes south of this place and LOVE going here whenever and however I can. I just wish they showed movies a LITTLE bit longer, but they have to make room for other good stuff!!! Love this theater! We love going to dinner at one of the many nearby restaurants in Rhinebeck and then walking down the block to Upstate Films. The ticket prices are much cheaper than Regal for movies that tend to be more "indie" movies. I love that a bottle of water is only $1.50 compared to the $4.00 I've paid at other theaters. They sell Boylan sodas instead of fountain drinks, and put real butter on their popcorn. The one downside is that the seats are just slightly too narrow to get very comfortable. But that is a small price to pay for all the other great things about this place. read more

I really love this lively, lovely little place. I can always count on a good indie film playing here, as well as the occasional wide release. The theatres are small but cozy. I really appreciate the short introductions by the owner before each film. This is in the center of Rhinebeck so it's close to all the bars and restaurants for a good drink/meal before or after the movie. read more

I feel so lucky to live in such proximity to this amazing little indie theater. I've been able to see all sorts of films that I would have never been able to see on a big screen otherwise. I obviously haven't loved everything I've seen there, but that's not the point. The point is that we have the choice to see something other than the typical Hollywood blockbusters, and that is a luxury that many people who live in suburban and rural areas don't have. This is my favorite movie theatre. I wish I lived closer so I could go here more often. They show a lot of great foreign films and documentaries that aren't being shown in most places outside NYC. They also use this theatre as a site for the Woodstock Film Festival, and it's typically much less crowded than the festival's other venues. They frequently do special events here featuring lectures by filmmakers, etc. It's also cozy and they serve great herbal teas and delicious popcorn with real butter. read more

When I think of movies, I don't generally think about Upstate Films and their movies, so when I saw a movie I wanted to see only playing here and one other local place, I took the dive and came here. I knew it had something to do with a documentary (which this place is known to show) but I didn't have a clue that it would have been shown here when it was said to have premiered in some theaters a week ago. I remember looking when I first got notice from Fandango that the movie I wanted to see (Goodbye Christopher Robbin), but was unable to locate it in any of my local theaters until I received a new email saying it came to some local theaters near me. Thanks for being there. The movie was great, though I was confused by the lead-in introduction (warm-up intro) lead into the theatrical premier by the one employee who entered the theatre. No one other movie theater has an employee entering the theater to explain that their movie was about to get underway. I realize that you need to give some reminders about cellphone use, but verbally approaching the customers inside the theatre isn't the right way to do it. (Throughout other movie theatres a slide saying "Please turn off your cellphones during the movie" generally suffices and most people oblige. I get it. It was a week before the beginning of your holiday (winter season). You didn't have to have this same employee mention this to everyone. I know it was mentioned in the hopes of enticing others to get people to purchase more tickets for other shows. However, again, this is not the way to do it. I felt awkward. We customers pay big money for a film, yet no paper ticket was ever given to me upon giving them my money. No matter where I go for a film, I'm always given some sort of proof that I've been there and I felt awkward to not receive one. It got so bad, I didn't even want to go back out to see if I could wrangle up a receipt (which I didn't get either) until the movie was over and I was heading out the door. I never looked back, but will hope this will change over time. I realize that you only have two doors for two movies you show, but parking is bad. Your back parking lot was completely full when I tried to approach the 5:40 showing at 4:20, and the one spot that wasn't full - was meant really for the house/business next door (which wasn't Fosters - bad at names here (sorry)). The only spots I could see were marked "No parking" or were tied up in construction cones - so I had to move out and try elsewhere - and fast! I tried parallel parking, but upon entering near a spot and pulling up against the car, I looked back and the car that never made their appearance said that spot was no good. Perhaps they wanted it. I ended up parking down at the Shatzell Ave lot of the Rhinecliff train station and Ubered-up and back later, but I shouldn't have had to. Can you fix your lot of holes and open those spots or open an overflow lot somewhere close so everyone has a chance to watch a movie here? With so many spots in your theatre yet few spots to park and yet parking lots nearby available only for the nearby business and not meant for your patrons, maybe it's time to open your pocketbook Upstate Films and expand! Also, I know a little about Rhinebeck, but most of your patrons are coming from the city via the train station. However, there's no information as to parking lots available on your telephone greeting after-hours. That's awkward. Most of the theaters near me offer discount rates for special matinees before a certain time. Yet your business is one set price. This seems to be a rip-off! It's no-wonder I never thought about your business before for some of my documentary film premiers that I sometimes feel I need to watch. And what about the seats in the Goodbye theater aren't really seats but are fold-up wooden seats with soft cushions on them? Doesn't anyone ever use them? It seems awkward to see such unused chairs there - no other theater provides this bad choice of seats for it's guests - nor does any theater put it's garbage cans right inside the theater doorway. While most theaters start to brighten the lights a little once the credits begin, I felt it to be awful awkward that the lights never did begin to brighten. At most places, it's just a tad brighter once the credits begin and get brighter over time. Just as soon as the credits began, I was like "I'm moving - so I can avoid the mob of people waiting to get out! I don't know how most people react here when movies finish, so I wanted out!" All-in-all, it wasn't the best time to catch a film here, nor was it a bad time either. You have some work to do, if only you choose to do it. If you want me to come back in the future (and I MIGHT be back later this week for a second showing of the same movie) you could make me feel enticed and improve things before I return. I'm not going to mention that I was this reviewer when I come through, but I'll pop in for the second showing anyway. read more

Upstate Films Theaters - Cinema Near Me - Rhinebeck, New York

I've been going here since I first arrived in the area & they've always been one of the best places I've been to for the avant garde in film. The 2 best experiences I've had there were both Brazil (12/99) and Sunshine (2007), which was supposed to play in the smaller theatre, they switched us all to the larger theatre when no one showed up for the feature playing there - a stroke of luck for us, because the surround sound really worked for Sunshine! Anyway, the folks there are nice folks, they sell tea, cookies & other goodies in addition to the ever-traditional popcorn AND they do use real butter on their 'corn. Even if you're just visiting Rhinebeck briefly, don't miss a chance to see a film at Upstate. read more

I love the obscure great films that they show here. The seats are a bit uncomfortable though, and I feel as if I'm interrupting the moviegoers when i try to get to the bathroom because it's entrance is through a theater in the front. Popcorn is also so-so, but real butter is good. read more

They are now one with the movie theatre (Tinker Street) in Woodstock so the two won't be showing the same movie. However the critcism mentioned in the review below still applies more genearlly. The Boylan sodas have jumped up to 2 dollars apiece but that still is much much much less than a mark up for sodas that you usually see at other theatres. read more

I spend so much time in Rhinebeck, and yet I don't get to see anything at Upstate all that often. It's unfortunate, considering all the great things this theater has to offer. Not only do they have an amazing movie selection, but they also have a great space. I am always intrigued by the selections they show here, often things I've never seen anywhere else. I feel like I've stepped back in time every time I come here. The ticket prices aren't that high, something that took me by surprise. I was expecting ridiculous prices. The building seems older but they keep it nice and clean inside the theaters. The staff is nice, and seem to genuinely enjoy being there. I've been to far too many theaters where everyone is wearing a frown and look generally miserable, but everyone here seems in good spirits. They have excellent popcorn and snacks too! Definitely go and see a movie here, even if you're just passing through. There are very few places like this left, and it's definitely worth it. read more

If an obscure film I want to see is coming out soon, it'll probably be at Upstate Films. They show a lot of stuff I've never even heard of. The prices are pretty good. Seven bucks was the most I ever paid. They've got some nice choices for soda and snacks, homemade brownies and cookies and such. And they host some great events like the Oscar party, panel discussions and live film scores. But since this is in Rhinebeck, there are a lot of professor-types going to this theater like it was their second job. Their first job is driving Priuses. So the audience is not the youngest. And since the clientele is mostly aging hippies, new age artists and college professors, half of the movies they show are documentaries about poor people who live in Guatemala or Ethiopia, or old movies about a political rebellion or whatever. But when the movie's good, it's good. And those professors make for a quiet crowd. read more

Really,really great movies shown here, some are shown months before they hit the mainstream theatres. Great after dinner, or anytime. Very flexible, nice concession stand with a large selection of goodies. read more
