First experience at this place of business. Not exactly a promising one. When the staff has shifting eyes and actions amongst themselves "Be Aware". Basically, they're in search of your most expensive or name brand items, if you have any. They claim to offer you 1/3 of appraised value then 25 to 30 percent of that, REALLY??!! It's more like a set amount of 5% of the original value! They have you give them your personal information via a tablet, and provide ID for verification. Having you leave and return later, even though they starting going through my stuff immediately! They then inform you they'll call or email you once they've viewed and made a selection on the items they wanted (however, they NEVER called or emailed me, only informing me how late I could return) Upon returning, if you agree to the buy, then they will have you sign a receipt in agreement of them giving you their cash offer for the items, versus a store credit which is way more then the cash offered. Which to me only mean, they're going to sell your item or items for WAY more then they're actually paying you for them! They don't even give you a copy of the receipt, but you'll have to sign one! So you don't even know how their cash offer amount was determined, or if their math is correct; nor do they voluntarily offer to discuss it with you! They only tell you the number of items they've kept, without ever redisplaying them and offer you their cash value. Very sketchy! At least "Goodwill" will give you something! As stated previously, they don't even have the common decency to even openly display the items that they're buying, and discuss how they came up with their cash offer! They keep the items, they've decided to purchase in their bin and return any remaining items to you in the packaging you brought the items in. I would have felt way better about the transaction if I had given the items away for free at Goodwill or missionary services. So if you're looking for a clear, open and honest exchange, for what the whole process is worth. Your chances of selling it on eBay, Marketplace or OfferUp are about the same. But hey! you'll most likely get more cash for your items!! read more

I love it here! I have been a handful of times and every time I go I am able to find something. The prices are amazing as you are paying a fraction of the price you would elsewhere. Considering it is a consignment store, it is expected for some stains or holes to slip through the check in process and be put on the shelves. But as long as you check what you are looking at you can almost always find something. They do sales very often and sometimes even have clothes for only $1! They also buy clothes, but the clothes have to be trendy and mostly for the current/upcoming season. read more

I brought freshly laundered, folded, name-brand clothes to sell and I was given a snotty remark about needing to make sure my clothes were LAUNDERED AND FOLDED. In a very rude manner. I was also offered only $8 for a Columbia Jacket and Adidas Jacket which were in like-new condition. Might be back as a customer but never again as a seller. Store was decent, kinda small, but had some pretty good stuff overall. I brought in very gently used clothing (about 50 items) and they only took 5, well 4 after I disagreed with one of the prices, all for a whopping $16. I understand they need to make a profit too, but all the clothing was in style and geared towards the college age female which is their demographic. I also realize they may not need some of the items I was selling and thats ok too but here's what shocked me. The item I chose to keep instead of sell, was a brand new chiffon dress from a boutique shop, never worn, tags still on, and less than a year old. They wanted pay me $3 for it when I paid $35. I mean I wasn't expecting full price for it obviously, but I was expecting more than $3 when similar lower quality items on the shelves were selling for at least $20. Also as I walked around I noticed some very cute things but then noticed some very worn out and even stained items. Prices are acceptable considering its second hand but it really just depends on the item. I saw a designer dress selling for $30 when it was probably $150 originally but it was clearly very old and worn out, and personally that's just not worth it to me, I don't care who the designer is. It seems they care more about designers and not so much the quality of the clothing. read more

I had heard about Uptown Cheapskate through their ads on the morning radio and finally had the time to take the half hour trek from where I live to pay them a visit. I am big on recycled fashion and was excited to see if there would be other places I could add to my buy/sell/trade regime. My first visit went swimmingly well. I brought in several items to trade in and got enough back in trade in value to get a few items for my husband he was eyeing there. The men's collection had much more to offer than places like Buffalo Exchange so it was great! I unfortunately did not find anything for myself that trip. The one dress I did find that I liked had some weird stain on it and so passed, but was still pleased with my trip overall. The clothes were a bit more teenager and a sales associate asked me if I was looking for something for prom (I'm close to 30), but still was pleased. Excited to do some spring cleaning this weekend, I packed up another load of clothes to trade in on this rainy Sunday afternoon and made my way the half hour trip to University City. I walked in, excited to make my exchanges and the sales associate quickly advised, "We stopped buying at 5pm." I looked at my watch. It was 5:02. A second lady behind the counter reaffirmed, "We stopped at 5pm." Mind you, there was one other customer in there besides me and at least three associates who were doing nothing besides sitting behind the counter. They advised I could come back tomorrow. The store was still open for shopping, so didn't understand why they stopped buying. No apologies on their end. Apparently 2 minutes is enough to turn away an eager customer. They were not nearly as friendly as they were the day before. I turned around without saying a word. I was annoyed at how poorly they addressed me. Needless to say I will not be back. There are enough stores in this town that I can take my business to without having to come back here again. read more

My new favorite consignment store. In many ways, this store is similar to Plato's Closet. It's super easy to sell stuff back but don't expect them to buy back everything. I had a HUGE Ikea bag stuffed and they only bought about 8 items but I don't mind donating the rest. You have the option to get cash back or either store credit. They told me they could give me $27 cash or $36 store credit... Odd that they offer the two at different prices but I guess it's a nice incentive to buy their stuff. Their clothing is extremely reasonable. I left with a pair of Delia jeans for $10 (Usually around $40), American Eagle shorts for $7 (usually around $30) and a top for $7. They have brands that are well known and a lot of designer clothing. Their shoes are super nice as well! They even have clearance! This isn't your grandma's thrift shop; nothing looks cheap or is tattered. Definitely worth the visit. The only thing I dislike is the staff. I arrived right around opening so maybe they were bothered since it was first thing in the morning. read more

I tried to call (after leaving) the store manager to leave a complaint about my experience and she proceeds to CURSE me out! All because she thought I was someone else. Then tried to laugh it off like it wasnt a big deal. Absolutely the worst people I have ever come in to contact with. Nothing but good things to say about Uptown Cheapskate. They are the only store that has name brand business clothes for men that I would be happy to wear to my banking job. The idiots such as Mary and Bernadette are the painful wart on the backside of small business owner. Mary: if you think your Old Navy clothes is worth more than you were offered than take your junk somewhere else. The market dictates the price you get not your personal opinion. Bernadette: 5:02 is not 5:00... if you don't get that then the apology should go to the rest of the world for having to deal with you. And finally to YELP! So I love shopping at second hand clothing stores as much as the next broke college girl but this one isn't worth the time. The clothes are mostly really cheap brands like Charlotte Russe and wet seal and all of it is HEAVILY worn and hasn't been in style since 2002. Tag a 10 dollar price tag on it and I couldn't get out of there faster. Don't get me wrong, I can be one determined shopper and will spend quite a while searching a store for a good deal but there wasn't an item I touched that I would buy even if it was 1$. Anyway, either all these yelp reviewers are very sensitive to any negative reviews about this place, or the owner wastes all their time commenting back to reviews. (In which case I hope he or she will jump off the computer immediately and throw their store's 'inventory' in the trash and start from scratch. My Visit Is Always Awesome, I've Been Shopping There From The Beginning 1st Opening...

Don't go to this location, the kids in there don't care. If you have any sort of issue get it in writing or they might screw you over. Awful customer service and communication. Smug attitudes from young individuals. Won't think outside of the box, gang up on you, and lie. Nothing can be done without a Manager on staff. No apologies for the the absurdity of their "rules" and no explanations either. I wish I had recorded my two dealings with these people so I could prove how wrong they have been in this entire situation. I was duped into having to buy back a pair of shoes that I never sold to them in the first place. When the Director Of Stores, and the Manager can't handle an upset customer, your store is doomed. Damn straight I was upset, you didn't believe me, you talked over me, snapped your fingers in my face, lied, and did nothing to show concern for the way your associates have treated me over the past week. I've dealt with really irate clients over the past 20 years in my profession and the way you all handled this situation was completely wrong. I suggest customer service training 101, first lesson empathy. You're individually owned, but I'll make sure I'm heard. Oh, and here's a tip... when someone tells you they have had a death in the family or their father is on his death bed, "have a nice day" is not an appropriate salutation. read more

I just walked in the store 2nd selling experience. I waited over 3 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge me. I counted five employees behind the counter. Still nothing. The customer service here is awful. I just had a small bag of about 15 items. Then I guess a manager walks off saying 45. So then the woman that was helping me was like it'll be around 45 minutes. She was nice she must be new. So..... I'll come back and let yall know what the offer is if there is any. So I return an hour later my clothing still hadn't been checked. A guy says about 5 minutes. I walk around the store come back to the same guy he says he got distracted give him 2 minutes. He offers me 10 bucks for 3 items. Decent. He hands me the receipt and ask what do you want cash or credit. Huh. Great customer service. I won't be returning. read more

Many of these "cash for clothing" places have reviews written by sellers who take it personally when their clothing gets rejected, but the store is in the business of making a profit and they know what sells, what doesn't, and buy accordingly. I'm also a middle aged mother of two, so I don't wear most of the brands this store carries such as Hollister, A&F, Gap, Old Navy, and Urban Outfitters to name a few. This store has some great deals- if you are a teenager to twenty-something and shop at mall stores. If you have these brands in your closet in great condition, they will probably buy from you, but keep in mind that the more exclusive the brand, the more money they will give you. No offense to stores like Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, Macy's,etc... But their clothing is cheaply made for the masses, and have little to no resale value. This store obviously caters to college students, so they must keep their prices affordable, therefore buying as cheap as they can. It is what it is. The staff is wonderful. I was selling a few items today while looking around and was approached/ greeted by two employees. They usually ask if they can help you carry your things out to the car too. I'm a strong supporter of local businesses, and if you are in the market for college-aged clothing then this is the store for you. Sometimes you may find high end brands but the clothing is mostly for the MTV crowd. This store is a lot better than Plato's Closet, which carries the same brands, but in worse condition. Some people may beg to differ, but IMO I'd rather shop at the Goodwill than Plato's. read more

I love this store!! I work near it and live by the new one in Huntersville so I go to both! I have 3 teenage kids so this shop is always a wonderful place to take them for a shopping spree. Clothing is always in great condition and the brands they love and want to wear. The store is always neat and clean and easy to find clothing in the sizes you are looking for. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful at both locations. Most of the time I find a great bargain but sometimes leave empty handed :( I have bought 2 fabulous Michael Kors bags at this location for a STEAL!!! One was brand new with tags still on it for $300 and I "stole" it for $100!! Now that is a bargain! They usually have a great selection of the Miss Me jeans also!! I usually have a good experience here, and the payout is always good. But tonight, I was treated with such disrespect. I came in with my clothes at 5:50pm, only to be told that they stopped buying. I asked her why because y'all stop an hour before closing and she said they she needed to catch up so SHE decided to stop taking buys. Since when can an EMPLOYEE make that type of decision? It's false advertisement when you say you stop buying at 7 and then turn around and stop buying whenever you want. The girl also over spoke me and it was hard getting my point across. read more
