One of our favorite dog parks to bring our 8 y/o rescue, Zeus. Parking usually available in the little lot or on the street, but you might have a little trouble during peak times: weekday evenings and weekends. There's a large dog side (to the left upon entry) and a small dog side (to the right). Both areas are properly fenced and have benches and communal water bowls. I think there's also poop bag dispensers on each side, too. We like that the benches are dispersed throughout the area so you can sit wherever the shade is from the plentiful trees throughout the park. For the most part, the other park-goers adequately supervise and pick up after their dogs. There's plenty of room for several dogs to run around at once without feeling crowded. It's pretty close to Long Beach Blvd, so you'll hear the occasional honking or bus driving by, but overall it's pretty quiet and peaceful (other than dog barking). We also love that there's a sidewalk from the dog park and parking lot that leads east to Scherer Park and duck pond, so if your pup still has some energy after exploring off-leash, you can take them on a (leashed!) short walk up to the pond. read more

I'm a huge animal lover, and my dog Kona LOVES dog parks, you will never meet a more friendly, more sociable boy than Kona, he loves everyone, that's how he was raised. While on my Kona Saturday drive my wife and I came across this dog park, on the sign it said Gayle Carter Uptown Dog Park. We entered from Long Beach Blvd, kind of a small parking lot but we got lucky and found a spot to park. As we were parking we saw several people walking their dogs along the path, seemed nice and well kept. They have 2 sections, large dog and small dog, both divided. Both areas had water fountain, benches and dog poopie dispensers. We met this lady who was there with her dog MOJO, said she'd been coming here for at least 10 years, said she knew the woman, Gayle Carter of which is was renamed in honor of who was an advocate for animals and their people. There was only one small dog Mojo in the small dog area when we arrived, but shortly another family came in with 5 dogs and my Kona was in heaven. More friends to.play with. He had a great time. The only negative I found was people weren't on top of cleaning up after their dogs, we nearly stepped in poopie a few times, luckily we saw it right before we stepped. There are plenty of doggie poopie bags in the dispenser why not use them. This is a nice little park let's all help keep it clean. I can only comment about the mornings as that's when I bring my dogs but this is a great dog park. We've been going here regularly for almost a year. Very friendly people in the morning who love their pets. When we first came we didn't know anyone or how our dog would react but after a few visits people knew our names and our pup. We adopted our second pup from this park. I find it really strange that people would complain about the groups formed here as everyone is so nice here, warm and inviting. As a younger couple with 2 small dogs, who don't look like the typical dog park people, we were welcomed and look forward to our mornings here. We consider this dog park a haven for our pups. Our pups are familiar now with everyone and have their "pup friends" they play with. It's nice. Tips if you're new to the park - just introduce yourself like everyone else does. That's what we did! Include yourself in and don't sit away from everyone. I notice that people will sit in corners so everyone assumes you want to be left alone, so people do!... if you complain about not being accepted, don't exclude yourself. Who let the dogs out {woof, woof, woof, woof} I don't know who let ALL the dogs out, because I only let one out, and his name is Sherlock, my English bulldog. Dog parks are places that I'm not too familiar with, seeing is that I have never owned a dog before. So when I finally got Sherlock, I figured it was a good time for me to check one out for the first time. Since this dog park is pretty close to my place, I figured I would walk Sherlock over there and check it out. When we got there it was somewhat deserted, but since Sherlock is still young, the lack of dogs in the park was a good thing. The park itself has two areas, one for larger dogs and one for smaller dogs. They also provide baggies for you to pick up your dogs droppings. The park also has plenty of trees so on those hot days there is plenty of trees to keep you and your dog cool. One thing I noticed about this park is that they do not have any water faucets or fountains around and I was told that most parks do provide these things in case your pooch gets thirsty. All in all this is a pretty cool park. Sherlock had lots of fun meeting new dogs. He played with a few daschund's for a while and even went over to the gate that separates the large dogs from the small ones and said hello to a big Rottweiler, who barked at him and literally scared the crap out of him because he pooped just seconds afterwards. My dog was bit here today by a large dog in the small section. I just left the vet and my dog is going to live but good grief. I handled it pretty cooly because I thought when he finally did get bit there that he would die. To see him walk it off was so reassuring to me and made me so grateful that to be anything other than civil with the other dog's owner would have been a waste of time. But please people with large dogs, do not bring your large dogs into the small dog section. If you have a small dog, I recommend that you not bring them here but if you do and you are faced with a large dog in the small section, say something to the large dog owner and stand your ground. There are regulars who come to Uptown Dog Park (like Gayle or Tracey) who will tell those that break the rules to stop or leave but they can't be there all day policing people. Listen to your gut and keep your eyes open. I have noticed more and more dog owners bringing their large to medium sized dogs into the small dog section despite the codified rules stating dogs more than 25 pounds cannot be in the small dog section. It must be comforting for those who decide to casually break that rule to know that their dog would win in an unfair fight but for the rest of us who observe those rules and cherish our small dogs, it is a nightmare to imagine. After observing this over several months I knew, given the amount of times I witnessed a large dog in the small dog section vs. the amount of times I brought my dog to the park, that an event would occur. I continued to bring my dog here because I thought it made him happy. I thought a lot of my worrying was "new mom" nerves but in the end, my mama intuition was right and I should have listened to it. I love Fred. I don't know what my life would be like if I were writing this review right now without him next to me. Be careful if you bring your small pup here. A new dog park in the area!! I was so excited to go check it out, as was my dog. She always loves exploring new places. I heard of this dog park from Andrea V. And thought it was about time to check it out! So we got her in the car and headed to long beach. The dog park was easy to find with large visible signs from the main street. It's located within Scherer Park. What I liked: - separation of large and small dogs - poopie bags and trash can for disposal - nice tall trees with lots of shade What I didn't like: -no water bowls around, or a fountain or even a hose -space was limited, it was a pretty small dog park, even though the park was large enough to accomodate a larger dog park. - dogs are agressive in Long Beach! haha, you gotta be tough to live here. But overall this dog park was A-OK. I will be back because its nearby and Nani enjoyed running around with other dogs...but bring your own water and balls to throw around. read more

I brought my 2 [10lb or so] dogs here Friday evening around 5pm for quick play time. There were only a handful of other doggies with us in the small dog section, as well as a handful of humans. Ive driven by earlier in the day on different days and ive always seen it way more packed. The humans were very passionate dog people. I mean, trust me, I love dogs.. I LOVE DOGS, but I'm not into having weird convos about everyone else's dogs and getting asked 101 questions about mine. Either way, my pups had a great time mingling with the other pooches. Everyone was well behaved and played nice while we were there. The park was a pretty good size; enough space for 25lb and under dogs to run around comfortably and get good exercise. It was very clean at the time I was there, and there were plenty of water bowls spread around for the pooches to drink from. I noticed one lady in particular going around straightening everything out and filling the bowls with water. I'm not sure if she worked there or was just a regular who was pitching in a hand. Pros (small dogs section): *plenty water bowls *poop bags are well stocked *at least one big pooper scooper out *balls and toys around for doggies to use * lots of seating for humans *good parking I didn't go over to the bigger dog section or get a good glance of the details but there were a lot more dogs on that side; everyone seemed friendly and playful with one another. This park is the most convenient for me. Although it's small, the large dog section has adequate room in which my dog can romp. We were even invited into the small dog section one day when there were no big dogs on the other side. I've chatted it up with two different dog owners who appear to be daily visitors. That was kind of cool. It's nice to socialize with other dog owners. One downside to this park is that they are currently fixing the water bowls. On one side is a big, muddy hole that everyone keeps running into. On the other side, the water doesn't work at all, so you keep seeing thirsty dogs running to the bowl and coming up empty. It's a bit sad. Oh, and this park has mosquitoes. On my first day, I got bitten six times in five minutes once the sun set. :P Therefore, it's a great place in the daytime, but once it turns night, run! read more

This is the best dog park I've been to in Long Beach. I like that there's a section for big dogs and small dogs. Everyone I've come across are friendly and so far, have not had any problems with my dog or other dogs. it's pretty well kept on the small dogs area, where we always go. It's a nice spot, considering it's surrounded by a nice, shady park all around. Several water fountains for dogs and plenty of doggie poop bags and even a pooper scooper to use right away! I've been coming here for a couple of months now and Winston and I have no complaints. Once in a while we do have a dog or two whom see to like our ball and take it, but it's alright. As long as I get it back. I come different times of day, for the most part it's fairly quiet and tranquil in the mornings. I've been here in the evening as well as same goes for then. No grass is located in the closed off area. You have to different sections. Big dogs and small dogs. Smaller area for small and bigger area for bigger dogs of course. Take care of your dog, keep an eye on em and you'll be fine. Once in awhile you do have aggressive dogs but once that occurs express your concern! As I said no complaints. Pretty good dog park. I was here on an early Friday afternoon and there were about 3-9 small dogs while I was here. People were nice or kept to themselves. I really like this park it's in a very chill neighborhood. The only issue I have is there are some homeless people who have chosen to stay there which is not a problem as long as they don't harass me. But last time I went they kept harassing me I get Im a young girl and can attract attention but they kept harassing me. The uptown dog park is a cool place. Cool park, Cool owners, Cool dogs, Cool location. Me and Purse Daddy hang out here like wet clothes on a clothes line. Pursey is my buff pomeranian. He ain't no punk pom either cause he's bigger than the average pom. Do I recommend this dog park? No. UNLESS you are friends with someone who is a regular here. And by regular I mean friends with the older group of folks who don't watch their dogs. I had mildly-good experiences here with my dog so I convinced my husband to come. I always get super excited when my husband and I can take our dog ANYWHERE. So a dog park makes sense. Walked in, unleashed my dog and he scurried over to a group of dogs. My husband and I sat on the edge of the park, away from the group of other humans. My dog spent most of his time smelling around and when one dog would show interest in him ALL the other dogs just came dog-rushing him so he would run back to me or my husband and sit on our lap. One of the ladies told me it was because my husband and I were sitting away from the group that he felt the need to "protect" us (mmmm NO). So to test the theory my husband went. Since my husband isn't home very often my dog gravitates towards him when we go anywhere (shoot, even at home). But the same thing happened. He came to me. After a while I decided to move myself as well and my dog was acting the SAME way. Whenever one dog would show interest in him.. The other dogs came a running as if to say "you can't sniff with us." AND THEN one dog kept on trying to mount my dog. I was eyeing ALL the humans trying to figure out WHO this nympho-dog belonged to. As I was narrowing down the human list the same lady who told me why my dog wasn't playing with the other dogs came to "apologize" to me saying that she didn't mean tell me how to be a doggy parent, but just FYI-ing me on how things run here. She also proceeded to tell me NOT to intervene when a dog tries to mount my dog because MY dog needs to "doggy up" (equivalent to "man up") and let the other dog know that it isn't okay. For the record.. My dog isn't aggressive. Nor is he territorial outside the home. Nor does he ever feel the need to establish dominance because you know what... As Caesar Milan would say, "there can only be 1 pack leader." And in my pack.. My dog is NOT that. So every time the other dog tried to mount my dog I GLARED with vengeance at the owner-- who looked like he was hitting on the dog owner of a shiba inu.. Bruh, spit your game elsewhere. Anyway... I agree with other reviewers that NON-"regulars" aren't very welcome here. Which is really unfortunate since this is the closest dog park to my parents house. To top it all off.. At the end of the lady's "apologize" she said that I would know that I'm part of the group when people stop asking me what my dogs name is and what MY name is. And you know what... Trees and shade. Uptown Dog Park has plenty of both which makes for a comfortable visit to this place, for both dogs and owners. This would be a great place to take a dog on a hot, summer day. The base is practically dirt so if you don't like getting your feet dusty and dirty, wear sneakers. If your dog gets thirsty, don't worry 'cause there's a communal water fountain, including a bowl, for your furry friend. I've noticed that dog owners here are a bit more lax when it comes to policing their dogs. The wrestling is more aggressive, and more than a few medium-to-large dogs are in the small dog section. Unfortunately, when I was here on a Saturday morning, I heard a dog yelp (lots of pun intended). When all was said and done, a dog owner walked out of the small dog section with two big dogs. I can only assume that one, or both, of the big dogs hurt a small dog. 3 stars! read more

I needed treats to be able to control my dog just in case he gets out of hand. It's a way for me to protect other dogs from mine. I didn't need it because my dog was model behavior :) Like all dog parks, it's dusty and dirty and not a lot of grass, which I don't like. I wonder why there aren't any dog parks with beautifully grown grass. It's much cleaner and safer for the dogs' furry paws. It's probably too much upkeep for the city. There's a section for small/medium dogs and large dogs. Surprisingly, there was more drama in the smaller section than it was in the big dogs section. A fight actually had to be broken and 2 dogs had to leave because of it. On the Saturday morning we came, there was 1 dog that seemed really interested in my boxer. She kept chasing him around and not letting up. The owner tried, but failed to control his own dog. I was starting to get upset, but thankfully, my dog took the matter into his own hands and calmed her down. Will I come back? Probably not. The dogs here are a little aggressive for my taste. I'm updating my review to 5 stars. I've been coming to the park 3 times a week since November. I've really grown to love this park and the positive, dog-friendly atmosphere here. Since the recent expansion, the park has become that much better. More seating, a toy box and the addition of a water line have upgraded the park quite a bit. But what makes this park so great are the people that come here. Perhaps because this is a smaller park, it has a real community feel. There are a core group of owners and dogs who all know each other and we all just click. Nobody is an "outsider" here. Everyone is friendly and curious about new dogs. To date, I have never seen a serious fight or a bite at the park, though I have heard about this happening once in a great moon. This is going to happen, unfortunately, and is more about unresponsible owners and unsocialized dogs vs. the park itself. Please give this park a shot. When you come, I'd like to mention that you will see a fair number of pit bulls here. I want to state on record that I have never, I repeat NEVER seen one single incident involving a pit bull here. The pitties at Uptown are the most lovable, friendly bunch. They are the dogs my dog goes to first when she wants to play. read more

First, the bad news. No, you are not supposed to bring dog or human food to this or any dog park, or any off leash dog play area. The good news: you can bring and give your dogs food any place in the world--EXCEPT off leash dog play parks and beaches ! It's a no brainer to me ! So why would you disregard safety and consideration of other dogs and owners by bringing food around a large group of dogs you don't know ? I would not be writing this negative sounding review as I love the dog park, and this food issue is very rare. I only bring it up because someone else did a review and said "you CAN bring food here". And I don't want people to see her words and think it is true. The dog beach also has the same no food rule. Dog fights can and do occur especially with food aggressive dogs. Some are born that way and some become that way after being abandoned or lost and living for themselves on the street. Just like human homeless individuals, you have to fend for yourself to survive. My dog is not food aggressive but he is food obsessed and will not play if someone brings in food to dog park. He will sit there , looking adorable, and hoping you will fall for it. He has allergies and I don't want anyone feeding him . No the city sign in the park does not point it out maybe, but we do have signs posted on the fence, before you come in that explain the no food rule. thank you and peace read more

I've brought my dog here a couple of times. The side for the big dogs has plenty of shade. Both sides, for small and big dogs, have seating areas. Every time I've gone it's been pretty empty. My experience is that those who frequent the place are pretty friendly and always willing to chat it up. Conversations are mostly dog related though. If you're looking for a place to socialize a pet I think this park would be perfect for that. The amount of dogs present has always been manageable. read more

The people that visit this park are always friendly and the park is always nice and clean. Also they have a Pooper Scooper, Wich is a big plus for me I don't have to bust our the poop bags (yay). If you live nearby and have a dog, this place is for you. I came here a handful of times with my puppy. I'm glad I did because the park has two enclosed areas where dogs can roam freely without a leash. The enclosed area has two sides. One side is particularly for bigger dogs to play and run around. The other side is for puppies and smaller size breeds to sniff each other and socialize. It was the perfect park to bring my puppy and have him play with other dogs for the first time. Overall, I would recommend this park to nearby neighbors. The park is fairly well maintained by the city, friendly people, and beautiful dogs. Just be prepared to see some dogs humping. read more

Love this place! I'm a dog lover, and owner of 3 (2 basset hounds and 1 pitbull). I only take my youngest basset, Charley, because the other two have issues with new dogs. When you get to the park, you'll notice there's two separate gated areas. The largest area is for the bigger dogs, and the other area for the smaller dogs. I prefer to go to the bigger dog area because it's less crowded, and I find that the bigger dogs are usually calmer (not always). I sit at a bench in the shade, and enjoy watching the dogs scope the place out, and play with one another. I definitely recommend this place! The dogs have clean water to drink, and there's easily-accessible pooper scoopers in both gated areas. My only tip is that if you have an aggressive dog, owners may not like you. This park is great, it has water fountains for you and your pup and there are bowls and poop bags as well. There are lots of places to sit (benches and tables) and there's usually a lot of parking. My only real complaint are the people! Usually there's a good group of people that come and know dogs and how they're supposed to act. Today I came and there was a girl there with a very scared dog that had not only the first gate opened but also the gate to the dog park too. So my dog could literally just run out. There's obviously a reason why there are 2 gates and signs telling you to open one at a time. She kept her dog on the leash in the park which caused my dog and her dog to become a little aggressive and she yelled and tried to kick my dog. The rules are there for a reason! Don't keep your dog on a leash in a LEASH LESS park! My dog wasn't biting or growling, but trying to get to her dog to sniff. Do some research before taking your dog to a dog park please! Know your dog, know their body language, and don't freak out if a dog barks at yours. They're animals! And barking and growling doesn't always equal aggression. Just be informed! It's so nice to have a new dog park closer to home! We've been here a few times now, and enjoyed attending the opening last weekend. This park is much smaller than the location on 7th St., but there is still ample room for the pooches to roam. There are 2 sides for separation of little and big dogs, and plenty of grass (for now). The only down side is that there is no running water nearby for the dogs, so you may need to bring your own if your dog runs as much as mine. If you have a little extra time to stroll around the rest of the park, there is lots to see. The ambling walkway leads past tennis courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, a large pond with ducks & geese and plenty of open greenspace to run and play. It's a shame the dog area isn't a little bigger given the fact there is so much space here, but regardless it's a wonderful place to let my girl out to play, meet some neighbors, and enjoy another great place in my part of town. I've been to this dog park several times and was excited because when I moved back to California there were dog parks (upon moving out there was just the dog beach, and where I lived the nearest dog park was around 10 miles away). I have not had a problem with most of the dogs, though some of the dogs have been aggressive (if your dog is aggressive, please do NOT bring your dog around other dogs) with my dog, making me nervous to bring him. I've had problems before with some of the pet owners acting as though they or their dog were holier than thou, such as when a pet owner got mad at me saying that his dog wouldn't like my dog, and then proceeding to yell at both me and my dog. That day was rather traumatic for me and my fur-boy considering he was a puppy and I thought it was time for him to socialize with other dogs not from his house. I've also had a dog owner tell me and another dog owner that our dogs were "stupid pit bulls" (both our dogs happened to be puppies around the same age; we had no affiliation and showed up at the dog park around the same time on the same day) and that he would have his dogs attack our dogs. If you have a pit bull or any dog mixed with pit bull, save yourself the trouble and go to the Wardlow dog park. It's a gloomy place. I'm still on a quest to find a decent dog park since I moved to southbay, but I can't be driving to LBC for this bitch. Who does she think she is? Princess Meghan Markle? Hell no but she deserves to have fun too. I'm taking her back to the sfvalley at least once a month. It's a 1 hr drive just to satisfy her need to see her old friends. My Puggle and I have been there quite a bit, we live nearby so we do not have to worry about parking. So far all the dogs we have met have been great. I have heard rumors water faucets will be installed but who knows when. I would bring poop bags because the dispenser is always empty, I'm not sure how often or who fills it up. Weekends tend to be the busiest, we usually see 10-20 dogs in a given hour period on a Sunday afternoons. read more
