This is easily my favorite dog park in Long Beach and my husky child Frank's favorite park in this city. Although we usually go to the park in our neighborhood, we will often drive to this park because there's so much space for Frank to run around and he doesn't seem to get as dirty as he does at Bixby Park. read more

Really love this place. I've been hanging out in Long Beach watching my mom's pups, so typically I'm rolling up with 3 dogs and they all love it. One just watches the squirrels in the trees. The other two love socializing and chasing balls. The dogs and owners are super friendly and my dogs always leave well patted and tuckered out. The parking lot always seems to have a spot open and it's super close to the park. There's also a small dog side, but I haven't been there. read more

I'm our travels back home heading out of the Los Angeles area. We stopped at this dog park because we had our bully with us and we figured it'd be a great opportunity to see how she reacts with other dogs at an actual dog park. This location has two separate areas, which is an area for smaller dogs and then an area for larger dogs and actually one section area for maybe dogs that should not be around other dogs kind of like a run strip. But there are some little obstacles for the dogs to become acquainted with looks like there may have been like some summer Shower areas that dogs can partake in the warmer weather. There is a dog drinking fountain here that our bully enjoyed. We kept her in the leash as she's not fully trained, but she did enjoy herself and seeing the other dogs, and becoming acquainted with them. Pretty decent size area, lots of sitting benches to rest on. For the most part for your dog, getting exercise and becoming acquainted and making little friends, it's an area worth visiting. The surrounding area of the dog park is pretty neat as well to check out during your stop here. read more

My boy Kona really enjoys this park. Im doing this review after half dozen visits, ranging from before Covid to after. From.ourfirst visit my wife and I were impressed, They have 2 sections, large and small dogs for safety. Each area includes and doggie bag dispenser, water fountain and benches and tables. The area itself is pretty large, both sides have plenty of room to play. The park is very clean, people pick up after their fur kids which is great. The patrons are friendly and welcoming. I did notice that some.people would bring their large dogs into the small dog area which seemed to intimidate some of the owners of the tiny dogs, it did me to at first because Kona is just under 25lbs I wasn't to sure what to expect but Kona did ok. I. l was told the park was lit up in the early evenings but I haven't been there at night to confirm or deny that. If I was to ask for anything to be different it would be to.maybr add an area with a little grass but I was able to walk Kona on the outside of the park after play time, there was grass there so that was nice read more

Not a huge dog park fan in general mostly due to pet owners behavior not their dogs, so this park is nice when it's not crowded. There's lots to investigate for dogs and a lot of natural elements to explore. This dog park has been around since I've been living in Long Beach probably either one of the most big ones around. I got a puppy in August as you can see in the pictures he is still a baby but a big boy and he absolutely loves his dog park it's filled with all different kind of dogs and he just enjoys it. It's like a paw party every day. I at least try to take my dog here at least three times out of the week or as much as I can depending on my work schedule but this park is absolutely amazing it's very safe for my dog to run around and be a dog so I love it. read more

Once upon a time, it was a gorgeous day to bring my man, Friday, to the park so he could commune with his puppy friends. Most of the time, this is a great place to socialize a pup. However, there are many times dog owners allow their pups to get overly aggressive without intervention. While, yes, this may happen at other local dog parks, this seems to be a consistent problem here. Enjoy the park, but be sure to watch your pup and stay close to avoid potential problems and hurts. What a find! Wish we had a park like this near to us. This was our first visit to Recreation Dog Park, after SUPing nearby. Paddle boarding is great mental stimulation for Betty but not so physical. So checked this park out so she could tire herself out physically. Huge. All dirt no grass. Lotsa room to RUN full speed. And lots of trees, tree stumps, etc to jump on. My girl had a BLAST in the first 10 minutes. Then, someone hit a golf ball near the fence as this park borders the golf course. The sound of golf balls hitting golf club and tennis balls hitting racquets scares my sweet girl as in she ran for the gate and scratched at it to get out. So we left asap. She was 5 when she adopted me so I'm not sure how that started. People here actually watch their kids not nose deep in their phone. Plenty of seating for the humans. Cool (old?) retro benches from the transit system. Water fountain closer to small dog side. I bring our own bowl just to be safe. Not here this day but I have seen dogs pee in the bowls at dog parks. We were here on a Monday around 11:30am, some shade, not at all crowded. Clean, didn't see any poop in the park. We entered off of Seventh between Park Ave and Santiago. Good sized parking lot, I didn't count, maybe 25 spots. Probably fills up fast on weekends. I took a bunch of videos, but for some reason can't post them. read more

Convenient location- it is a large dog park- biggest one I've been to locally. It does have a small dog area as well. There's no grass in the dog park- just sand. Lots of benches to sit and relax, while the pups play. Plenty of trees for shade. 2 Water sources inside the park. They do supply poop bags, as well as a pooper scooper. Trash cans are right on the on the other side of the fence. Plenty of parking. Fun to watch the fishing across the way. Very relaxing. I have checked out many dog parks in the area, and Recreation Dog Park has been my pooch's favorite one of all, aside from Rosie's Dog Beach. Why? Because it is hands down the largest. There are plenty of other furry friends my dog can play with along with extra tennis balls lying around when I forget to bring one. There are also tree stumps, tunnels and bridges for dogs to play on, but my dog doesn't care for those. Benches are placed all through out the park and they have pooper scoopers, so it remains fairly clean. You'll also find water spouts with bowls at the two ends and a small dog area on the east side of the big dog park area. Every once in a while, there are guests who don't watch their aggressive-tendency dogs closely and situations can escalate quickly, but for the most part, the owners have been mindful and handle dog interactions well. My dog looks forward to coming here at least once a week and she's usually reluctant to leave when it's time! read more

I really enjoyed this dog park. I love how the city repurposed the trees to have tree stumps, and giant logs for the dogs to jump on. This is a great space that has two sets of watering areas for large dogs, obstacle course items and plenty of seating. The floor is sand/dirt based, no grass. Overall, this is probably one of my favorite dog parks in the OC/Long Beach area. I'll be coming back again soon! read more

When it comes to the dog park portion, I will note that there is decent size small dog area, in addition to the MASSIVE, MASSIVE area for the larger dogs. Did I mention it was MASSIVE? THUMBS UP: I loved that I was actively watching owners taking care of their dogs, communicating with them, picking up after them and still interactive with other owners/visitors. You would be surprised at what goes on at other parks around the country. This is like a social function that operates smoothly for those with two legs or four. Lastly, there coolest thing to me was the dog/owner walk of fame.... The concrete in front of the park has been set with people writing their name and their dog's names into the concrete (with brief messages to visitors in the future, lol, like me). THUMBS DOWN: The only downside to this park is that the surface is completely sand. Dogs can get quite dirty/dusty - and so can you. AND there wasn't a hand sanitizing station like I observed at Rio San Gabriel Park's dog park. PHOTO OP: While here I met a furry friend named "Barley"... a completely lovable dog, who posed for several photos. Dogs can be hams that way... and I love it! WARNING WILL ROBINSON, WARNING!: I was informed that there are normally a LOT of squirrels in this particular park, so keeping your dog leashed, due to the busy roadway near by, is highly advised. read more

One of the more spacey dog parks, Recreation Dog Park is one of the many dog parks in Long Beach that many people frequent. Trust me when I say that there is more than enough room for your dog to roam and run free. Located in Recreation Park right across the streets from Wilson High School, I'll often frequent this dog park. The small dog area is well, pretty small! The big dog area is beyond huge. There are tennis balls all over the park, so there's no need to bring any. They also do have a water fountain for your dog or if you wanna fill up your bottle. There are some tree trunks in the middle in which your dog can play and venture around in. There are a few benches to sit on, as well as plenty of shade throughout the park. The many times we have came here, we have never had any issues with other dogs. That's all on the owners if the dogs begin acting aggressive. Space and parking is never an issue here, as there is an abundance in both. As long as the city keeps maintaining the nice and cleanliness of the park, it will continue to become a favorite amongst locals and others. I already like it! read more

If my dog could type, she would give this place five stars. Unfortunately, it's all up to mom. My dog loves this park. When you live in an apartment, it is so nice to run around in a large open area with a few of your furry friends. I'm pretty sure these are her sentiments. For me, I think this dog park is pretty awesome for dog lovers like myself. The place is large. There are separate places for large and small dogs. There are dog bowls on both ends of the park. There are several shades, and logs or tree stumps for my dog to climb on. There are also so many tennis balls for the furry babies to chase. One thing I don't like, however, is the strong smell of urine as you enter the gates, but I guess that's how our furry friends communicate. Also dog walkers sometime bring large packs of dogs to the park on weekdays. I appreciate their effort to give the dogs some playtime, but it's kinda tricky when you're handling so many in one place. Either way, I'll probably continue bringing my dog here. She seems to have such a good time when we go to the dog park. Come and bring your pups with you! Loving the amount of space this dog park has especially for our big doggies. Like every other dog park owners should always stay close or be aware of their dogs because a dog fight can happen anywhere. There isn't much shade but there are some nice benches to hang out at. As I arrived with my two dogs, one being 10 years old Labrador, and one being a seventh month old puppy, Labrador, I witnessed a circle of people with big dogs, chastising a man with his dog because he was asking them to control their dogs from attacking his dog. So he left, and I found out why. After I got settled in with my two dogs, these people had one of their dogs, growling and chasing my puppy all over the park, and I was trying to get my puppy to come back to me so I could protect him. After I got my dog back and put him on the leash, I asked these people if they knew who's dog it was that was attacking my dog. They did the same stuff to me that they did to the gentleman when I first walked in. Then, this lady that looks like she's eaten too many donuts in her life started chastising me for yelling at my own dog. I gave "Karen" a piece of my mind and left. It's too bad that people think it's OK to let their dogs bully other dogs at the dog park which could turn into a bloody fight. I could tell all these obese ladies were not happy people and just needed to talk down to somebody to make themselves feel better.. I will never go back to this dog park. read more

I love this dog park! It's huge so there's plenty of room for dogs to run around. I really like how there's separate big and small dog sections (although I do occasionally wish that small dog owners would do a better job keeping their dogs to that side). Be warned that on weekdays, it seems like there are a number of dog walkers who will come by with a ton of dogs. Seriously I've seen one person show up with 20 dogs. Whenever that happens, I usually clear out as quickly as possible since no matter how competent that person is, that's just a lot of dogs for them to keep track of. All the dog owners and dogs I've met so far have been really friendly. There's water bowls and hoses for the dogs, which comes really useful on hot days. Parking is in a small lot that gets crowded but I've always managed to find a spot so far. read more

That dirt can be some stinky stuff. Guess I'm a tough critic because Charlie just isn't really a fan of the dog park. I mean, she's not horribly opposed to the idea, but she couldn't care less. She's kind of a loner dog. While the other dogs are running around in circles, she's sniffing a particularly interesting smelling part of the fence. The park itself is pretty huge, and the other owners for the most part are friendly. The small dog portion of the park is pretty much the wussiest thing I've ever seen in my life. I am not a fan of this bark park, but I will visit from time to time when my friend can only make it here due to her schedule, and the fact that they provide lights in the dark hours and it gets dark too early during the time change of November through March. So yes, that is the major pro here. There is lighting, although quite dim. This allows people who get out of work later or if you can't make it earlier to be able to get your pups out. Unfortunately the small dog side is VERY small, especially compared to others. The big dog side is huge. I wish that the small pups at least got a little more room than it contains. There are a few benches to sit on as well as a table to sit at, but since the park is all dirt, everything is a little more dirty. No grass at all, so everything gets dirty quicker than normal, and unfortunately the smell of pee is quite overwhelming at times due to this. There is a trash can right outside the gate I believe to dispose of the poop. I am sure there is a bag dispenser, I just don't know offhand because I bring my own in case, as well as to save money for the cities as this is usually on their dime. What I do think is neat is that there is a giant trunk in the middle that the pups or yourself can walk around on, and the big side has multiple trunks or agility like items. There is one fountain somewhat in the middle. I am personally not a fan and prefer a few of my favorites for various reasons, but it's cool that they have one for the local residents here, as well as allowing people to visit during later hours, especially during the crappy season where it gets dark way too early. read more

This park is singular in its terrain features. There's a little hill, a big tree trunk to climb on, tubes for dogs to walk through, etc. It also stays open until 10pm, because it has its own lights. This is awesome, since most other parks close at dusk. On days like these, the sun goes down so early that it's always a mad rush to get outside and do something fun before it's too late. A late closing time is a perfect refuge for those who can't make it to a dog park before the sun goes down. Lastly, all the dogs are mixed up. Instead of having two distinct areas for big dogs and small dogs, when I came, all the dogs were running around together. My big boy loves little dogs, so this was a pleasant surprise. The people here are very friendly and helpful. I did, however, witness a fair share of dog fights and scuffles, which I haven't really seen in other places. read more

Downed trees to climb on, tennis balls laying around, obstacles to climb on, tubes, fire hydrants, water stations, stumps, benches for owners, smoking poles for smokers like me to stop littering, poop deposit boxes... I mean EVERYTHING! The reason I noted parks at the beginning is because I prefer taking our dog to the dog beach(s), but at least this way our Jilly stays dry. It's a bit dusty, but I mean, what dog park is grass these days? They have 2 separate areas for big dogs and small dogs, which is really great. My dog Leo, a beagle mix is about 32lbs and he always plays at the "little dog park" why? Pit Bulls are always frowned upon but, it never fails, it's always a Husky or German Shepard starting a fight over at the big park side, never a Pit. Leo loves this place (only reason I rate a 4 star), I'm the one concerned about him playing at the big side- where "he belongs." The pet parents at the "big" side are irresponsible here more than at other parks or can't keep up with their dogs. When a fight breaks out they do a lot of screaming and not enough separating. I rarely come here now. I used to bring my dog here every day. Mornings, noons, and evenings. People complain about the dirt and some reminisce about time when grass existed here. I could care less, sure it would be nice to have grass, but it's a dog park and they don't care. They just want a space to run wild and meet other dogs and smell fresh air. There's plenty of seating in both sides and plenty of shade. Water is available inside the park for dogs. The evening crowd is the best for the little side, but worst for the big side. Noon is best for the big side. Leo and I go to the new Friends of El Dorado Park. read more
