I took a pair of BRAND NEW $300 boots to have the heel repaired, (it had come loose whenI twisted my ankle) so I just wanted it secured. I paid in advance and he said 2 weeks! So after 2 weeks I went in and he had LOST my boots, & I had to help him search the store and finally found them buried under a pile of other items people had brought in, then another 2 weeks went by and when I got my boots back they had cement glue all over the suede where he had spilled and ruined my boots. I told him that was unacceptable, he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away!! He didn't even refund my money for ruining my boots!! read more

I brought my shoes in before Turkey Day. I was assured they'd be done in less than a week. When I went to pick up the shoes on the day they were quoted to be ready, the owner confessed they weren't done, and that my shoes were actually set aside and forgotten. (!) Ok, that was fine. He said to come back in two days to pick 'em up. I left work a little early, and skipped working out at the gym to pick up my shoes...... ....sure enough, they weren't ready?!?! I think he forgot again. Man, what was this guy---a girl trying to go out on a date with me (yeah, I was feeling that neglected). He said to come in the following week. On the day they were supposed to be done, I called ahead of time. I had to make sure I wasn't going to be ignored again (and have my self-esteem hammered just a little bit more). "They ready," the cobbler said. YES! Finally! I almost wanted to ignore him and come and pick up my shoes next Spring just to spite, but I wanted to be the bigger man, and honor my business with this business. When I was in the little store, the guy still had to ask who I was and what I was here for....he'd seen me a few times already. When I told him I was here for my shoes, I still thought he was going to say they weren't ready yet. But alas! My shoes were REALLY done, I saw them on the shelf. YES! :::: NOTE ON REPAIR: My shoes were basic black leather shoes, but one of them was like a Pac Man. The front sole on one had come unglued and would flap like a hungry foot (not good when on the dancefloor). :::: After paying for my shoes, I quickly left. I finally got to looking at my soles when I got home. I brought my shoes in to get new half-soles. This was a $32 job. I wasn't sure what to expect, but wow. I was impressed. My new soles on my kicks looked professionally pretty. I mean, the new soles looked way better than the original soles! So all of the neglect and ignoring of me by the cobbler seemed to be ok. Justified. Acceptable. I can totally admire this dying art and would probably go back here for any future shoe needs. But I'd also have the mindset, I might be ignored. I brought my leather jacket in for a couple of seams and a zipper to be repaired. He promised 1 week. A week later I checked and he said he was too busy. He needed a couple more weeks. After a couple more weeks I checked and he couldn't even find it! He searched all over his shop before he finally found on a rack somewhere. He pulled it out and promised it in 1 more week. I checked again and AGAIN he had an excuse. 3 weeks later I finally got the jacket back! It was a mediocre job at best, but I wanted my jacket back so I paid him. I have been going to Uptown Shoe Repair for 30 years. He does excellent work. But, he's Vietnamese and a veteran of that war (fought on our side and had to flee the country). So, he does business the "third-world" way. Here's how it works. Always the same. You drop off your shoes, he gives you a slip (he's had to start taking payment in advance the last couple of decades), and tells you they'll be ready on some weekday. If you call to ask if they're ready, the answer is always the same, "tomorrow." So, eventually, you realize that you need to drop in. You stop in and ask if they're ready. He looks around and after a long search, he finds them. He then gives you a day (tomorrow or the next day). Nowadays, he says he'll call you when they're ready, although I've always gone in toward the end of the day without getting a call. He usually says, "Why you come? I no call." and I say, "I was on my way home from work" or "I needed to go shopping." Then he nods and smiles, looks around for a minute, polishes your shoes, and hands them to you with a big smile. And, he is one of only two shoe repairmen in the Tri-Cities. He's always booked well ahead, and for good reason: excellent workmanship. He even repairs Red Wing and Earth Shoes. For those, you have to specify that you want new soles over the old ones, because you cannot actually re-sole either of those. read more

Avoid. Your shoes are not in good hands here. I tried them two years ago. I got the same story, unbelievably, as the other reviewers - the owner told me they would be ready on a Friday. I went to pick them up, he said one more week, I said ok even though I was wondering why they weren't even close to being ready. When I returned the following Friday he said ANOTHER week. At this point I was put out, but he is gruff, so I came back another week later. He never explained the delay, you have to pay up front so he already has your money, and he basically has your shoes hostage so what can you do? I told myself I wouldn't return, but... Fast forward to last week. I dropped off 3 pairs of shoes to be cleaned and resoled. AGAIN, he said they'd be ready on Friday. I called on Friday to make sure they were ready and sure enough, they were not. He said they'd be ready "Saturday...maybe Tuesday". He's obviously been repairing shoes a long time. I don't understand how he can be so off on his time estimates. I told him this was the second time I was coming here and I was willing to give it another chance but if I get another 2 week delay I won't be happy. So he called today (Saturday) and said they were ready. When I went to pick them up, the shoes I had requested to be cleaned/polished looked exactly the same. I don't even know if he remembered what he was supposed to do with that pair (the other two pairs were getting resoled). He took them back, only to re-emerge 15 minutes later with the shoes looking about 3 times worse than when I initially brought them in. The toe of the tan-colored shoes are now black. I said "oh these look worse!". He said "that's what happens when you try to polish tan shoes". If he knew what he was doing would make them look worse, he should have told me so and not done it! The re-soling on the other two pairs were decent (at around $30 per pair). Even that wasn't enough to pull this up to a 2-star rating. I won't return. I'd rather drive an extra 20 minutes to find a decent place. read more

Took my hiking boots to be resoled, and I am currently at 5 months of waiting. The owner only did one boot so I can't even just get them back as they are half-finished. This is cash upfront business. I can live with that. I have them re-sole my shoes regularly. This time, I had some bonded leather tan shoes that were peeling and scuffed at the toes. He pulled out his available shoe dyes and nothing matched. I told him that I would look elsewhere. He insisted that he could fix the shoes. I assumed that he would get a matching color dye from his wholesaler. I picked up the shoes today, and he had smeared a yellowish dye on the toes only! I dropped my boots off go have the soles repaired when they started to separate from the leather. He made me pay cash, then said they'd be done by the following Friday. I returned and after about 10 minutes of searching, he found them unfinished. Said sorry and that I should come back tomorrow. Came back several days later...same story. I asked for my money back. I believe leather goods repair is definitely a dying art and do consider ourselves lucky to have one in town. I've been to Uptown Shoe Repair twice in the last 3 years to have baseball gloves repaired. He may be a little slow at time to get the work done but he always does a beautiful job and prices are reasonable. I'd definitely recommend this business! read more

He had my Coach sandals for FIVE MONTHS and they still weren't repaired. All that was needed was the tip of one heel done as I had worn it down to the metal. After SEVEN visits to pick them up in the five months he had them, they still weren't repaired and he actually BROKE the rest of the stem of the heel without fixing ANYTHING. I got my sandals from him, walked outside and threw them in the trash in front of his store door. Perhaps that's why it was placed there. Never will I return to this place for repair. read more

Recently I took two pair of my wife's shoes in to get new soles and heals. 1st problem: they weren't ready on the day initially promised; we had to wait another three days before they were ready. 2nd problem: The heals and soles were cut up and the glue leaked all over the heals. 3rd problem: We had to pay in cash up front and couldn't get a refund. I went to uptown shoe repair on January 26th to get my work shoes repaired. I had called them before going into the shop, and was told they could have the shoe done by closing time that day. When I drop my shoe off and paid for the service, I was told it would be done the following Wednesday. 5 days? No big deal. I went back over a week later and he hadn't even touched my shoes. I didn't get an apology, only a "oops, didn't even look in my box." He told me he would have it ready the next day and he would give me a call when it's done. Well, I never received a call. At this point, I'm ready to take my business elsewhere as I need those shoes for work. So I called and once again he told me he would have them ready by the end of the day, that he hasn't touched them. This business is very unorganized and for paying up front I should expect to have my things fixed on time when HE said they would be ready the first time.
