I've been coming here for years to bring my cats in. Sadly I feel things have gotten worse over the years. From not telling me that bloodwork that was not mandatory would be $600+ dollars...I was told AFTER it was done and the person who told me felt really bad, to paying $95 in advance to have an appointment scheduled and then them taking a walk in before me. And now my cats bloodwork was available for me last week and they haven't called me. Even the person on the phone thought that was really weird. I have had good experiences here too. Especially during the end of life phase for my last cat. So I know they are capable of more. The atmosphere is always clean, and it's usually pretty easy to get in. Been coming here for 10 years and love them overall! They have been walk-in only until very recently. Be aware that you should schedule an appointment if at all possible. This is because same-day walk-ins will now cost 45% more for an office visit (e.g. $95 for pre-scheduled, and $140 for walk-in). The only reason I am giving a two star is because of the doctor. I arrived as a walk in. I was asked to fill out some items before they could help me. My hands were holding my sick fur-baby. I asked can they please take him to be looked at while I fill it out. He seemed very inconvenienced with my request and took my dog. Then the doctor's assistant came in and took notes on what was going on. My doggy even went up to her and she didn't even acknowledge him. Then came back with a quote where she placed an amount for medication at $1000. When I questioned that, she said she accidentally put an extra "0" but wanted me to sign it anyway. I told her I will after she fixes her error. She didn't like that and her face said it all. She then paraded my dog that was in a lot of pain, to fix this instead of caring about him. Then the doctor came in and she was lovely. She was very thorough and informative. She actually showed concern for my dog and me. Being a vet showing no compassion to my dog rather it's almost time for us to close. I felt that was their big concern and not my dog. Not one member showed any concern or even acknowledged him. i have been coming here for a few years now and they always go above and beyond in terms of care and affordable (for in the city of course) treatments. i have sadly had to put two of my pets down here (old age and medical issues) and they always showed incredible grace and tenderness in those moments that i will never forget. yesterday i took my dog in for his first ever dental appointment and i was really nervous about it but they made me feel so much better about having him go under anesthetic. its the day after now and my little dog is feeling so much better without those nasty teeth and the healing process has been smooth so far ! i truly appreciate and love this vet , the fact that they do emergency walk in's is a huge bonus ! read more

Urban Animal Gave a Lethal Vaccine to My Healthy Dog - Justice for Gujy I'm one of the owners of Gujy, a young, healthy dog whose life was taken after a visit to Urban Animal. On May 9, 2025, Gujy was brought to the Capitol Hill clinic for a vaccination. He was completely healthy at the time. After that visit, he became sick, and within a few days--on May 14--he died. This was a preventable tragedy. Gujy was up to date on his vaccinations, and we believe the vaccine they gave him was not only unnecessary but deadly. When I called Urban Animal to request his medical records, I was met with resistance and delays. Despite being listed in their system, they initially refused to give me any information. Eventually, they claimed Gujy had only been seen on May 9 and denied any follow-up visit. It felt like they were trying to cover their tracks instead of being transparent and accountable. Gujy was born on January 23, 2024. He was happy, healthy, and full of life. His death should never have happened. Urban Animal's carelessness and refusal to take responsibility must not be ignored. This is pretty good. I'm not sure whether it is a four star or a five star.... The staff are quite hard-working and on top of things. Considering how busy, Urban Animal-Capitol Hill is, that says a lot. I didn't realize that you might have to wait hours before being actually seen but they made the long wait easier for me by working me in. My cat has had chronic issues with diarrhea and vomiting. I did not get a hard-sell or any unnecessary tests. Instead, they recommended a very no-nonsense strategy of changing his diet, metronidazole (in case of a bacterial infection--I've used it myself while traveling in South Asia!), and10 packets of Purina Fortiflora, a probiotic. The latter two were very reasonably priced. I also got a "sanitary shave" for my cat (it was expensive but worth it). I wanted to see how they would handle my sometimes ferocious orange tab but I ducked into the restroom and they started it without me--it only took probably 2-3 minutes! I was impressed by the vet tech's ability to "handle" my cat. Cat whisperers? It is such a relief to not have to have go back for multiple visits (I don't have a car! It's difficult to get my cat into a carrier and then wait for a Uber or Lyft!). I find their approach quite reasonable and worthy of confidence. read more

Responding to the BS response that you guys gave me. My dog has NEVER been muzzled! You guys put a muzzle on her immediately. If your staff owns bullies why would they muzzle her before doing anything. Unless you guys muzzle all the dogs visiting ? ( which I know you guys don't ). I kept debating whether I should write a review or not after my experience here; I kept thinking about it and eventually settled that I'd like to. My boyfriend and I took our cat in for an emergency walk in appointment when we were seeing unusual stools (blood in his stools) one morning. It was not packed when we arrived shortly after the hospital opened. Upon visiting, I realized that the animal hospital had a separate building for cats and dogs. Despite us bringing in our cat, we were asked to wait in one of the patient rooms in the dog building. This was an initial red flag to me. I don't understand the purpose of this species separation if you're going to cross them over. Our cat is not familiar with dogs. He's extremely scared of dogs and dogs' barking; it's very apparent in his posture. It made me extremely uncomfortable to see our cat like this. During the visit, a technician and a vet came to check up on our cat. Personally I found them to be friendly, but I came out of the visit not knowing anything concrete about our cat's condition. I value medical expertise but I hate being sold products when it's health related. We were prescribed probiotics without being asked if our cat was already being given any. I had to provide this information myself. Our cat is already on probiotics but the vet wanted to prescribe one with more fiber. Okay, that's fine. Fast forward, we were prescribed gastrointestinal cat food. No where in the process did anyone sit down with us to go over what's in the prescribed cat food. What makes it 'gastrointestinal'? I took a look and compared the ingredients to the Orijen wet food that I was feeding my cat awhile back and 70% of the vitamins in the prescribed food were present in the Orijen wet food. I am aware that labels on cat food (like 'dinner', 'with', 'meal') require certain percentages of ingredients to be met. I'd like to know what makes up the label 'gastrointestinal'. Outside of the fact that Purina's parent company is extremely notorious, the Purina gastrointestinal food contains Carrageenan as part of the ingredients. This is a pretty controversial ingredient in cat food, and it's one I like to avoid in the contents of what our cat eats. It felt like I walked in not knowing how my cat was feeling and walked out not knowing how my cat was feeling while spending $200 on a visit and $$ on prescribed food. I feel that in any medical profession (animal or human) you should clearly know and have the right to know the active ingredients in what you're being prescribed. This is not a review saying that the prescribed products are awful. The review is solely because I just didn't like how it felt less of a medical visit and more of a sales transaction. read more

Urban animal is a convenient city vet where I've taken my animal for years but I think I'm done. They messed up essential prescriptions for my 20-year-old cat so I had to go in and buy them in person. Didn't realize they would three times more expensive. When I asked why so expensive they said "I know I'm so sorry. It's just fees on every prescription. Sometimes they're $10 sometimes $20". What? I paid because it was an emergency. When I was emailed the receipt later it was incredibly vague and there were no fees listed. Recently went in for bloodwork and a check up and was given misleading and unclear information about the cost. Also aftercare, the vet recommended food that my pet is allergic to, even after telling them she was allergic to it while we were there. Wtf. Ultimately, why would I go to a vet that just doesn't really care, especially when they're ridiculously expensive. Also they add 15% to all bills as a donation and you have to specifically request them to take it off. Y'all can do better than this. read more

Worst customer service experience ever, I was a customer of the downtown (appointment only) location for 2 years with 4 pets and spent $1000's over that period. Turned up 20 mins late on one single occasion due to very stressful parking issues (I called ahead to let them know I was running a few mins late) and was told my pet wouldn't be seen and that my $110 deposit on the appointment was forfeit despite the fact that I was in front of the door. The receptionist was very rude and simply told me "that's our policy, if you don't like it Ill transfer your pets records wherever you like". The veterinarian refused to see my cat due to "miscommunication" with the front staff. I called the Capitol Hill location around 6:30pm on a weekday immediately after noticing blood in my cat's stool. This has never happened before and I was worried it could be serious. The receptionist put me on hold to confirm with the vet that we could still be seen since they close at 8pm. She informed me that we would be seen only if we arrived by 7pm, no later. We rushed to get my cat to the clinic and arrived at 6:58pm. The receptionist then realized that we were new clients (mind you, she did not confirm this while we were on the phone). She had me fill out an online form while she went to the back to talk to the vet. The vet comes out (I don't know her name) to perform a "triage" in the lobby by asking me a few questions regarding my cat's condition (she never took a look at my cat). She then informs me that my cat's condition isn't urgent and can wait for tomorrow. I explain my frustration as the receptionist said we would be seen. The vet apologizes in a condescending tone and rambles about how another client walked in at the same time as I was on the phone with the receptionist, and they were the last client who could be seen that day. They apologized for the "miscommunication" and sent us home with a stool sample kit to bring back with my cat the next day. While I appreciate the apology by the vet and receptionist, customer service is also important. We should have been seen regardless of the "miscommunication" simply due to the fact that we rushed to get here after being told we would be seen. Fantastic place to take your pet for non-emergencies!! I have two cats, and this year has not been kind to their health. However, the vets at Urban Animal have been phenomenal. From quick diagnoses to offering numerous options, they ensured that both cats had to go through the least pain possible. Pricing is incredible as well - despite having pet insurance, taking my cats so many times has definitely added up. However, Urban Animal offered the most reasonable charges, which especially helped as I am looking for work. Wait times can be long, but it's a walk in clinic, so that's to be expected. Fortunately, if you don't live too far, you can simply pop in and place your pet in line and come back with your pet when it's almost its turn! This ensures first come is still first served, but reduces stress on pets (especially cats that HATE being in carriers like mine). We've been going here for over two years and the experience has always been great. I am so so grateful to all the staff. It is so hard to get vet appointments these days since there's a great shortage of vet even everyone is overworked. I am so glad that Urban Animal could see my husky, Max, on the same day and they saved his life. We went in around 630pm and we found out that Max had an intestinal blockage which can be life-threatening. Dr.Moore consulted with their radiologist via text even when they were off work. Dr.Moore then called all the emergency vets in the area but unfortunately we couldn't find one with a surgeon on call that could take Max. We decided we would do a recheck/surgery tomorrow morning when their head vet is in. When we finished, it was after their business hour, but all the staff was still so compassionate and professional. The vet tech could barely open their eyes, but they were attentive all the time during our visit. When we went in the next morning right when they opened, the team and Dr.Bradley were ready for me and had a diagnosis for Max. After presented with the options, we eventually decided to transfer Max to an emergency vet with a board certified surgeon to give Max the best chance. The staff ensured that we had a smooth transfer and it was because of their professionalism that Max was able to get the best care in time (and me not breaking down during the stressful event). I have always known vets are not in it for the money, but this time I truly felt that they cared about my dog and me. They hurt when they see our pets and their owners hurt and they try to do everything they can to ease that pain. Most of the vets are very caring but, like most, they are overbooked. Most experiences were great and could get us in quickly when needed or even came out to take a quick look to see if we needed an appointment. The only time it didn't work out well was getting a tooth surgery for our old dog who really needed more recovery time post-surgery, and he was checked out too soon which created more complications. Just keep in mind older animals need more time and focus for a good recovery. Also, keep in mind that you don't get the same vet every time you come here. That helps keep their prices down I guess, but there's value in having a relationship with a vet who gets to know your pet, and may better be able to spot subtle changes in their health that might indicate a more serious problem. read more

Walked in tonight (2 hours to closing) with our cat who was in distress. The front staff was able to immediately whisk her to the back rooms for triage. I was impressed and appreciative of the prompt care (which was partially luck on our part that they weren't backed up and could take her). In the end, our cat didn't make it, but the doctor and staff were incredibly compassionate and pragmatic and helped minimize the suffering. The vets are good but the office is so inconvenient. It has been almost three years since COVID has effected everyone and nothing has improved. It is impossible to reach anyone. You can not make appointments. They aren't open on the weekends. It takes several days to get a response to an an email. The whole set up of the organization makes you feel like you are putting them out. They are very expensive, which personally is the least of my concern since my Animal means more to be me than anything. With that said they certainly know how to add on to your bill. They had me take my Dog have a specialist cardiologist check up every 4-6 months for 3 years before they finally admitted it wasn't really necessary. You are not allowed to schedule an appointment and I hate to have to switch vets since I have been going to an Urban Animal for approximately 10 years. They used to be the best. read more

This business has gone downhill since COVID! We went to wait in line 7:30AM. When we were able to check in, they told us that it'll be about a two hours wait. We were fine with waiting for that time. After waiting 2.5 hours, we checked in with the front dest asking why it has not been our turn yet. She said they were busy and we'll have to wait another 1.5 hours because they had to see others first because of emergencies. It is beyond frustrating and unprofessional given that we have waited 2.5 hours already and they weren't going to tell us that it'll take longer until we asked. 4 hours later.. we finally get a text that our visit is approaching and we can be seen. Checked-in and waited another 30 mins for them to get the room ready. Once we got a room.. guess what happens next! We had to wait another 30 mins to be seen by a vet and we expressed our dissatisfaction so the vet "prioritized" us. The visit was less than 15 mins in itself but had to wait almost an entire business day to be seen. What's also frustrating is the fact that you can hear the employees chit chatting and giggling in the back while most patrons have waited an entire day to be seen. There was no consideration of people's time. Don't come to this place unless you have all the time in the world. You're better off finding a vet with appointments only unless you like wasting your day. read more

I originally chose them because it seems they genuinely care for my dog, they treat him with respect and kindness and they don't suggest unnecessary medical procedures and tests. While the first two points are still true, I have found over the past couple of years that the ladder is not. I thought the first few times it happened that they were just being precautionary in their treatment and diagnosis. But it was the last visit that really confirmed the feeling they are suggesting unnecessary procedures to leave you with an enormous bill. Another great experience at Urban Animal pushed me to actually write a review. Our doggo has been a patient here since puppyhood and while I was a bit off-put when they switched back to walk-in (we got our pup during the pandemic). But I've encountered zero issues. Other times, I've been able to hop in line early early and haven't spent more than an hour waiting. Today, however, I called ahead and asked about vet tech only appointments (vax + nails) and was encouraged to just come by whenever. Waited 10 min on a Friday afternoon, quick in and out (despite having a very anxious dog), and no issues whatsoever. The staff here is INCREDIBLE, and are always so sweet and helpful. Maybe most notably, there have been a couple times where I knew I couldn't get in due to wait times but had immediate concerns (e.g., paw pads ripped off or constant throwing up). Instead, I just called and chatted with someone over the phone and every time was instructed how to treat at home and advised when it would be actually necessary to come in (it never was, every time, followed vet tech instructions and doggo healed up great). I will say that I do have a *relatively* flexible work schedule and have thus far only needed vet tech appointments (knock on wood), so please keep that in mind. I understand the bad reviews from frustrated pet parents needing immediate treatment, but I'm also not sure that other non-walk-in clinics would actually provide "better" service. Personally, I appreciate the flexibility and knowing that if an emergency arose, Urban Animal would be there without needing an appointment far in advance (and at the very least, staff would be more than willing to do what they can to answer questions/help). read more

I requested a refill for very important med (insulin) after sending all the necessary clinical data (insulin curve etc.) but they thought I have not following their instructions, which is not true. I tried to clarify, but they were dismissive just because I responded to their text not to e-mail that they thought I should have done, but the e-mail did not come. My dog is running out of the med. We have a great vet but on evening/weekend emergencies, Urban Animal to the rescue! My baby Baci is generally pretty healthy and happy boy! But he did get a few accidents! Actually several from his daycare, usually in the evenings after we picked him up. We find out he has a huge gash! The vet is closed! And most hospitals take over 2-3 hours wait. You can always call this place, they'll even help you over the email with pictures. Recent visit was Baci swallowing a rock during our hike! We came in sunday morning around 8 am, they open at 9 am! There were already a huge line. You come, you park and you call. Make sure you call though or else you'd be waiting a while since you can no longer walk in with current covid-19. Luckily, Baci barfed the rock right outside the clinic. They still took him to check and made sure he didn't have any bad injury inside. They were friendly, he went happily. I did see other doggos being turned away cause they didn't have the right equipments, and others waiting a while too. So far, our visits been good. Just make sure you call them!
