I opted for a dry cut... my hair is thick and curly though thanks to modern hair tools, I prefer to straighten. Cassidy is 'The Fixer' as I arrived with evidence of really bad haircuts! Oh my gosh... I left with edgy, acceptably 'messy' and looking chic. I had several women later on ask, WHO CUTS YOUR HAIR. BOOM. ONE HALF HOUR! LOVE CASSIDY! And... this is your excuse to pop over to Wegman's if you've never been. Scheduling is easy. Great communication. Ample parking. A great stylist may be up there with great healthcare. When I first sat down to get my haircut, I explained to my hairdresser exactly what I wanted and showed her pictures. Throughout the haircut, I had to remind her multiple times what I wanted, even after she claimed she was finished. When she began to face-frame, I told her that I wanted the shortest piece to hit the bottom of my ear, so that I could tuck them behind my ears. However, I ended up with one side being correctly cut, and the other side being uneven and way too short (she cut the shortest piece at eye level, not ear level). Overall, the salon was was nicely decorated and clean. Perhaps a different hairdresser would have done a better job, but ultimately, I was very dissatisfied with the quality of cut that I received, which is what made me give this place 2 stars. read more

Olivia is my stylist. She is friendly and a color wizard. I trust her to give me the best haircut. She also does color to make it the most wearable long term. The salon is so cute and I love all the plants and warm decor. They even have a place to leave a compliment which I love. This is my salon from now on. I want to start by saying my experience at the visit itself was pretty nice. The place is clean and they are definitely taking precautions, and I loved the overall vibe of the place. However I was pretty underwhelmed with the services. My cut was "meh" at best (there's areas they missed when trimming my undercut and other odd misses) and my gloss color lasted about one wash with sulfate-free color safe shampoo. Maybe I'd go back to try a different stylist and get just a cut, but can't say I'd recommend the place. read more

I've been debating whether or not to post this, but I think other customers might find this helpful. In July I came here to go all-over blonde and I loved the way it turned out, everything was even. I came back for a root touch-up in October and the result was terrible. The stylist did not leave the bleach on long enough resulting in orange roots next to level 9/10 blonde hair. It was awful - she offered to "fix" it for free but the hot roots were still clearly visible and I paid for the original job in full. I've spent hundreds fixing the mistake she made, and it didn't need to happen that way. Staff doesn't seem to collaborate when it would be beneficial to younger stylists. My advice would be to either see someone with much more experience, or go to a salon where you feel confident that your stylist will ask for help when unsure of what to do instead of just winging it. read more

I really wanted to like this place. It was recommended by a friend and I was hoping to find a long-term relationship with a new stylist. Unfortunately, this place just isn't it for me. Why? Primarily the costs (that are not posted anywhere, so it was a big shock) and the rather unappealing atmosphere. The haircut and color were fine - on par with what I've gotten elsewhere. However, the salon itself was dirty. They don't apparently clean up from the cuts and you end up sitting in other people's discarded hair bits... that end up on your clothes. The equipment looks quite dated. Frankly the lack of sanitary conditions was a problem for me. Everything just looked and felt a bit dirty and used. I was charged $215 for an easy haircut and a color treatment. That's on par with the most expensive places in Chapel Hill. Places that are much cleaner and provide a bit better all around service. If I'm going to pay that much, I'd rather go elsewhere. read more

This place is a Godsend! Earlier today I ruined my previously healthy red hair by trying to use DIY color remover, and it turned out horribly. I knew I had to get it fixed before working tomorrow morning- I definitely couldn't go out in public. I knew a color correction would likely take hours for my hair and I wasn't expecting much on such short notice. However, Urban Fringe made the time for me. They got me in as soon as they could and stayed open until 8:30 making sure I left with gorgeous hair. And somehow, they managed to turn my terrible copper mess into a shiny, icy blonde. I booked haircuts for my kids here since it came recommended by members of a local Facebook group I belong to, and I also appreciate that they take COVID precautions seriously. The stylist was silent, verging on sullen and the salon seemed dirty. I could look past those things if my kids had received good haircuts at a fair price, but they did not. They were bad. Really bad. I asked numerous times for the stylist to blend the back, take more off, etc. and at some point I just had to stop asking because it just wasn't getting any better and I wanted to get out of there. When we left, I was thinking the haircuts were just subpar, but passable. However after only a couple of weeks of growth, they have proven to be awful. Like uneven, cowlicks, everything you can think of with a bad haircut. On top getting terrible haircuts, I was charged with what I only realized after I left was a regular adult price for both kids - despite being told they offered kid's cuts at a lower price. So I paid two times as much as a regular kid cut at a chain place for a way worse haircut. Needless to say we will not be back. Many of the positive reviews seems to be related to color, and maybe they do that really well. But this stylist should not be cutting hair. read more

100% recommend this salon. The salon itself is so cute and clean, I loved the vibe here. Everyone was so pleasant, from my check-in to my wash & cut and the team blow-dry, everything was a great experience. My stylist was Olivia and she was just amazing! I have long thick wavy and frizzy hair. She gave me a cut that refreshed my long layers and she did it in a way that helped to frame my face and take down some of the boxy volume from up top. My husband, who normally wouldn't notice a difference in my "trims", has been commenting on how nicely she cut my hair. I plan to come back for a hair smoothing treatment here instead of another place that I had been researching since I trust them so much after that visit. Also, prices were very reasonable! I take the extra trip from Durham to this salon instead of the pricier places in town that have overrated themselves. Not what I wanted... twice. I scheduled and asked for all over natural looking highlights and had pictures to show what I wanted... first time I left with a balayage after it just being described as a 'technique where you paint into your hair to make it look more natural'... then I came back to have it fixed and they got rid of ALL my color... and now I spent over $250 to have my hair look THE EXACT SAME as before I even came in and it just feels dried out instead. I am happy with how my highlights look when my sister does it from a $12 box... and yet I am not even remotely happy with these results. read more

I recently visited Urban Fringe and they are taking all the precautions...I was hesitant to get my hair done right now but felt very safe the entire time. The stylists all wear masks and shields and you are required to wear one the whole time as well. You are very distanced from the other customers and everything is clean and sanitized. Right now, they are not using blow dryers eliminate the risk of germs spreading that way, but they give great instructions on how to style your hair when you get home and send you off with products in your hair to make styling (or air drying!) easy. My visit to Urban Fringe was just as relaxing and worry free as it always is and I appreciate all of the measures they are taking to keep us safe! read more

Good morning! I just had my appointment at urbAn fringE with Ellie and I wanted to leave a review for the great experience I had! I'm a grad student at UNC and from a different state, so I was a little nervous about trying a new stylist in a new area (and I'm just a nervous person in general, really). Ellie was really kind and took the time to explain what she was doing and why, and it was the first time I'd really been able to talk to a hairstylist about fun nerdy things that we had in common :) I went in just wanting to cut my hair short and color it back to my roots -- Ellie did a fantastic job matching the color and the cut is perfect, I adore it. She also offered me a drink both at the beginning of the appointment and while we waited for the dye to do its thing, and stowed my bag and jacket when I arrived. It was just a really nice and professional appointment while also being a lot of fun, and I appreciated it so much. Honestly, probably the best hair appointment I've ever had. I found the price really good for the amazing job she did, and I wish I could've left a larger tip (but I'm on a grad student budget TT ). Would like my money back! Urban Fringe might have other strengths, but blonde color is not one of them. No prices on website as of October and beginning of November so easy to upsell. Base color (they call it "all over color" but it is just literally a root touch up)and highlights are all done at same time... while double booked! They are making a MINT! Stylist rushed through appointment. In the past the stylist either flat iron or blew out hair. Not here. Stylist basically dried it and asked me if I wanted product. Only used a little product before drying;that was it. Did the same thing my first visit.Turns out stylist didn't even look to see what color she used last time. She gave me a haircut with the same level of carelessness. I want my hair back! Pics on instagram must have filter. My blonde hair left red, brassy and frizzy. Also, my bangs are uneven and cut is awful. I think this place may be best for dramatic cuts or purple hair. It doesn't appear they know what they are doing with basic color and cut other than making a fortune. read more

I dyed my hair bright bright red a couple months ago, and have went to multiple hair salons trying to get the red brassy out and become a cool blonde. Emily has been cutting my hair for almost 10 years now and I can't praise her skill enough. The Paul Mitchell coloring products are top quality and very natural looking. I love the feeling of welcome and friendliness in the saloon. Each time I am there I meet new friends and feel more and more part of a community. No matter which stylist I get- they always look at the inspiration photo that I bring in and find ways to not only give me that look- but to make it even better! I feel like the stylists are more like artists than any other salon in Chapel Hill. I always leave feeling like an even more fabulous version of myself. She is incredibly attentive to detail (very neat edges) which is important to me, especially when I get a gel manicure that I want to last for 2 weeks. Appointment started with a great shampoo in a very comfortable chair with a nice scalp massage - very relaxing. I did not give a lot of instructions on how to cut my hair, but Megan listened closely to what I said, and then used her natural talent to figure out how to give me exactly what I wanted. She obviously takes a lot of pride in her work, and really took her time to get things just right. First haircut in a long time I didn't feel the need to ask for changes when she was done.
