Neutral review because I cancelled my appointment due to price. I asked for a partial highlight and trim. When the calendar invite displayed what I'd be charged the total came out to be $400. Quite frankly, I find that appalling. I usually pay $120 for a full head of highlights, wash, cut, style and all. Was not happy with the haircut given on the fly my first appt. by Jaime, pressed for time because of accommodating a bang cut during my appt. which I said was fine by me. I had been scheduled for the cut by a more junior stylist, so I wasn't charged extra which was a big deal, I guess - but it was really to convenience them. I wanted only a trim that followed the line of the cut I had and quite a bit more was cut "for health," but it was layered which I didn't want but let it go because it was too late by then. The fastest cut I ever got. The balayage was nice but needed toning in the shop but I couldn't tell. I was very polite - they were warm - all good. I got home and noticed unevenness. And that it was pretty orange for not even being washed yet. I called the next day and they wanted photos. I said I preferred to just stop by and show Jaime. They said no. I took pics and typed comments. Saw Jaime 7 days or so later. She was nice but said it was the way my hair was bent. Ok - so it was my hair's fault - not the cut. I said, "oh, ok, didn't argue, because clearly she was offended. In fact, I may have even apologized. Then, as she was evening out the jagged sides anyway (from my hair's refusal to accord to the jagged cut), I asked that it be angled around my face (the way the original cut was but I didn't say that) and she sighed, snipped, and said, "like this?" and I said, "a bit more," and she sighed ... I thanked her profusely afterward although I didn't tip this time and found that I had been blocked from further appointments online. I attempted to call and make one and then was told, hold on, and then "I'll call you back." Got a text that Jaime was going to be out of town. I texted back that I could see anyone available. No response. I invested close to $300 to establish myself as a client with full highlights (I only needed root touchups) and was given no reason for being dropped. I had no idea that asking for a correction would get me banned from the salon. This is not the behavior one would expect from an upscale salon in which the warm kissy-kiss behavior on both ends was insincere on theirs. I was told (via hearsay from an insider), that they do not fire clients without warning, and certainly not without explanation, but apparently, I'm not the first and won't be the last. Be warned. The work done was not worth the money but because of the time invested, I would have gone back. Obviously. And even considered stopping by and inquiring as to where I went wrong -- but I dislike confrontation almost as much as they do. But not in running a business. I lost whatever respect I had for them because of this unfair -- financially and ethically, passive-aggressive behavior and felt compelled to write this review when I read that they bill themselves as being "warm," and because the most recent review prior to mine had been banned from appointments, as well. The "artistry," of the result of monies spent suffered from the same lack of integrity in which they conduct their business. And I would have gone back there, too, so perhaps this was a lucky break, but it made me feel bad and shamed. A business run by women catering to women (who tend to not speak up and feel in the wrong in general) should know better and is particularly egregious. After the appointment, wrote a glowing review on their site. That's a shame on me I'd love to take back. read more

I'm sorry that I am posting this. I get along with the people here but I was disappointed today. I arrived only to be told that my hairdresser was sick and they could only do my color unless I saw someone else for the haircut. Then I asked them to cover my gray hairs and they gave me highlights and left the gray so I ended up staying an extra half hour so that they could redo it all. Then they overcharged me and told me only after I received the itemized receipt via email and pointed it out to them. I am pretty sure it's not the first time that has happened since it seems that the prices are all over the place. They have a separate price for highlighting and gloss. But they don't ask you if you want gloss, so it's only when you get to the counter that you find out your haircut and face framing highlights is over $200 dollars. I have been there twice for balayage and the price difference was $70. If they were on top of things, I wouldn't mind paying more than other salons. I was looking forward to this. I wish I could say it was a good experience. If they had only made one or two mistakes, I would have forgiven it. But this was just too much. read more

I was a regular customer since 2015. Yesterday, I came in for an appointment to learn that Julie can't color my hair due to my face wasn't covered with mask in full. After Julie let me know about her decision, I politely left. To spend 15-20 minutes in a store in a mask is one thing and to sit in a mask for 2-3 hours is different. I have a difficulty breathing in a mask due to a health issue, to which receptionist has replied that I should probably stay home On my way back home I thought of buying a cloth mask, which I think I could tolerate better than a surgical one. This is a new experience for me and I didn't know that the full face coverage was required for people who have a difficulty breathing in a mask. Upon returning home, I tried to make an appointment online, only to realize that my online account was blocked. I called the salon the next morning and learned that I need to pay for my next appointment in advance. I feel discouraged by how events have progressed and will not be returning. read more

There's been some issues recently regarding an employee that has since been terminated, people need to give honest reviews and stop bashing the company because they have handled the issue so if you see any bad reviews regarding this please ignore them because they have more than likely never been to this salon and need to realize the salon has personally apologized for the issue. read more

They really need to work on scheduling and timing issues. This is the third time I've been in for a cut and color, and each time my stylist was rushing to finish my cut because her next client was already sitting there waiting. Because she was so rushed, she only spent about 10 minutes cutting my hair, and I left with a pretty mediocre haircut that I don't love. I had asked for a razor-cut bob with choppy ends, but I ended up with a shapeless, unflattering meh. I also left with still-damp hair because she didn't have time to finish blow drying me. It's a bummer, because I did really like my stylist, and I'm sure she could have given me a great cut if she had had enough time. Not sure if I will be coming back. read more

I've been going to To the Woods since they opened their doors. Actually, I went to Julie for a few years before that when she was at another salon and then followed her here to her own business. They run their business like true professionals in the best sense of the word, and also have a warm and friendly atmosphere. It sounds like a great working environment for their stylists too. They cut my unruly hair so that it looks young and modern but isn't hard to maintain. I've been to almost all the stylists and can say that they are all great! read more

I have my hair done by Amy who is a miracle worker with my super thick and wavy hair (pro-tip: she uses a straight razor to help thin it out). Rude receptionist...get over yourself. I was turned away by the receptionist after driving 45 min. 15 minute grace window is realistic. But after fighting unexpected traffic, looking for street parking in a construction zone, and then walking around the building in circles trying to find the salon for another 5 minutes with no signage anywhere, I was greeted with "you missed your appointment!" Ok. I don't want to make it weird, but here we go. Here are the basic facts: 1) I have really curly hair (3b/c), 2) not many people cut it right, 3) today I had an appointment for a hair cut and highlights with Jess, and 4) I've written maybe 2 yelp reviews ever, the last one was probably 6 years ago (just to give this post some gravitas*). I'm breaking the silence because OH MY GOD I JUST GOT THE BEST HAIRCUT OF MY LIFE OH MY GOD. I had to share. In addition to not being much of a yelper, I'm also pretty shy around hair stylists - I've gotten so many bad haircuts over the years that the traumatic associations are too strong. Ladies (and dudes?) with curly hair: Jess knows about it. She listened to everything I said real carefully and then read my mind for the rest. She's curly hair-cutting magic. I have huge beautiful curly hair with some sweeeet layers. I also had an appointment for both cut and color, but she pointed out that my last batch of color was still going strong, so there was no real need to do it right now and that I should come back in a few months. Ok, so, I've been salon-shopping for awhile now, as I have difficult hair and am picky. I have what stylists like to call "mermaid hair" and that label is pretty accurate; it's long, blonde and wavy. I've been looking for someone to move my color from golden to beige blonde and have had a couple disappointments along the way. Let me tell you, Jaime knows what's up. I went in for a single-process color and we went through a thorough consultation process and decided that I needed a slightly different service (balayage and an all-over gloss). I felt like she really listened to what I wanted and gave me a great color shift that is dramatic enough to be noticeable, but still looks really natural. Their space is awesome, beautifully minimal, but warm and welcoming. I'm so glad that a great local business has gotten the commercial side of Greenbridge going. **Like many spas/salons these days, they only take cash gratuities, so prepare accordingly.** read more

Lovely atmosphere to begin with. Pretty in an Anthropologie sort of way. Not so much glam as to be intimidating. Zoolander projecting on the back wall was a nice touch. Haircut was fabulous. Molly, currently an apprentice, cut my curly hair with real care and consideration. She was also able to hold a real conversation--which has never happened to me. A plus. No awkwardness opens up an avenue for actual communication, so I felt comfortable saying what I thought about the cut. As it turns out, I had zero complaints. I could tell that she had done her best--a stark contrast to the many stylists who seem to just want you out of their chair. Bonus: the haircut was only $20. Obviously that rate will soon go up. No more looking for a salon! Since I moved to Carrboro from Raleigh, I was searching for a new hair salon to go to. I did a ton of research and compared several salons, but To The Woods' website caught my eye. Not only is it simple and artistic, it's unique! And I really loved how the products they listed weren't the same products I've seen at every other salon. They're all paraben & sulfate free with a lot of vegan products as well. I find it very cool that it's kind of exclusive to To The Woods. First off, I spoke with Jaime about my hair, and we thoroughly talked because I knew I was cutting my hair short, and besides being the obvious nervous, I've had such bad experiences in the past year when going short, plus I'm super picky about my hair. The great thing was that Jaime talked with me throughout the process so I felt reassured and comforted. In less than an hour, I was out the door. Compared to the usual 2+ hours I used to spend for a haircut, Jaime nailed it even better. I'm going to be around for a couple of years, so I'm so relieved and happy to find a great salon I can return to. read more

Bad service at the door: I came in, walked up to the desk..... and was not greeted. There were 2 people talking about the computer, and I'm sure it was an important conversation but I definitely stood there and waited for 3-4 minutes before being acknowledged.... seriously, no eye contact or anything. I don't think I've ever been anywhere where this has happened and it really put me off. One of those people ended up being my stylist. Haircut was mediocre. Too short in my opinion (as they usually are), and didn't look like the picture I wanted anyway but whatever. 45$ for the cut and shampoo, cash tips only, same stale interaction at the desk going out. Overall, if you really want to go somewhere that has a hipster vibe with minimalistic all white deco, that can serve you french press coffee, tea, or wine, and you don't care too much about customer service this is your place. One of the cheapest haircuts in Chapel Hill though, so I guess I got what I paid for. read more

To The Woods Salon has brought my traveled experience with salons to a new peak. I've had hair services (cuts, color) from NY, London, Paris, CA, Canada and more and found the professionalism and expertise rivaled by To The Woods. My cut is a work of art and my color....flawless. I went from a 'bright' blonde to a more warm blonde, as well as a more stylish cut under the direction of Jaime. While she was very deliberate, I felt at no time that she was rushing herself or me. I appreciate the time allowed to be comfortable while processing with herbal tea presented by one of the gals. The atmosphere is more upscale than one would imagine from a small town, very urban and crisp, though very inviting. The price point was a pleasant surprise at a more than reasonable rate than expected from a high end establishment. Tips are cash only, be advised. I was never pressured to purchase any sort of product. Actually, I had to ask about what products were offered. I did buy a wonderful shampoo and conditioner (Verb) and am loving it! Super reasonably price for a quality, no chemical product. Parking can be tricky, so allow yourself ample time. Yes, I'll be back! Yes, I'll recommend Jaime and To The Woods. Julie does a great job on my curly, wavy frizzy hair. They also stock a nice range of specialty hair products, including my fave devacurl. They have sparkling water too, which is a nice option. They also have some pretty fancy magazines, many of which I haven't heard of before, which are fun to peruse while sitting under the dryer. You might have to park in the Hampton inn deck by cat's cradle because the public lot across the street often fills up and people double park there on the reg. I once got parked in and was lucky because the person parked next to me arrived shortly after I unsuccessfully attempted to back out, and I had more space to maneuver once she left. Like, please don't double park in tight parking spaces. That not cool, man. read more

I searched around town for quite a while looking for a stylist that took the time to care about a guy's haircut - not easy for a guy w/ short hair. Jess at To The Woods nailed it and continues to, time after time. Not only are the cuts great, but the new space was obviously laid out and designed with great care. They've really grasped the feel of a high end salon; beautiful & modern interior, eclectic and rare products, teas, coffees and wine for the patrons, and enough eye candy to keep you interested as you look around the space. And even with all that - the cost for the services is completely reasonable and well below that of most of the Franklin Street shops. The staff is super warm and welcoming and you can tell they are enjoying working together in their new venture. Great addition to the area! read more

To The Woods is so COOL. It's like stepping into a hip Brooklyn salon, without the NYC prices. I got a cut from Jaime for my first visit, and she had so much feedback about how to best care for my hair. I've been blow drying it straight and wanted some tips on how to let it dry naturally with a little wave now that it's summer and I'm in the South for the first time. She gave me fantastic instructions and made sure to ask if I had any more questions about how to style my hair. The energy in this salon is also wonderful, it's got a very creative, artistic vibe while still being comfortable and relaxed. I waited a very long time to get my hair cut after moving to NC and now I have to say I'm excited to go back to get it cut and styled again in the near future. read more

She was attentitve to what I wanted, she assessed my hair texture and its volume, and she looked so confident in fact, that for the first time, I had the courage to ask for a haircut that was fun instead of just "safe." She executed it perfectly! It has a done-undone vibe while still looking professional enough for work, and it is growing beautifully. It takes less time to style than anything I have had before because it was cut with my particular waves and texture in mind. I think this is my favorite haircut ever, even accounting for a pixie I had in college a very long time ago :-) As for the salon, I had no problem booking, checking in or waiting too long. Bad experience at this salon. The receptionist tried to make me reschedule when I was 10 min late, rather than honor the 15 min grace period. Then Jess gave me a bad haircut. She also initiated inapproprate conversation with me that was uncomfortable and unprofessional. I did not go back to the salon to correct the haircut because I didn't want to do further damage. I did see a stylist at a different salon and she said that I need to let it grow for 8-12 weeks because there is nothing she can do until I have some growth in the back which was shaven and undercut. I was excited to get a haircut at To The Woods and Jess came highly recommended from a friend who thinks she is great, but it just wasn't a good experience for me. read more

Let me start this review off by saying that I travel for a living (travel nurse), and that up until this point I felt as though I was a high maintenance blonde... It was a constant routine...get foils, it grows out, go back in 6 weeks for more, over and over and over...never really feeling that spectacular walking out of a salon. Due to how much I travel, I am constantly in and out of different salons- making it tough to truly allow a stylist to get to know myself and the direction in which I'd like my hair to go! Today was TOTALLY different. My voice was heard and I felt as though we worked together to get to an end result which is HUGE! Jaimie worked wonders with my beat up, sun damaged, and bleach damaged locks! I walked in with hair resting in the middle of my back, and walked out with hair that doesn't even touch my shoulders and I couldn't be more in LOVE! The knowledge that Jaimie has when it comes to hair is unbeatable and if you're looking for someone to give you an awesome new do- she's your girl! Jess is a thoughtful stylist -- she listens to what you want (looks, level of maintenance, etc) and provides her honest opinion when asked. The result is a great hair cut! I'm in nursing school, so money and time are both tight. I love booking an appointment on the website (very convenient). A haircut here doesn't break the bank, and it's a terrific value. She listened to me as I explained what I wanted done, asked relevant questions to make sure she understood, and walked me through the entire haircut explaining how and what she was doing. Who expects to have their best hair EVER at 56? I didn't! But after going to To the Woods in Chapel Hill, I do! Jamie and Jess are down to earth and fabulous and so talented! My hair is long and thick and shiny and the color is the BEST EVER! Picture dark chocolate with warm mahogany highlights . . . no easy trick on top of a base that is mostly drab grey. But Jamie knows how to mix color in a way that is nothing short of magical . . . My hair looks better than the many times I've paid way more to get it done in NY. I am so grateful I found this salon! I can honestly say this was the best salon I have ever been too! I was very nervous about getting color done to my hair since I have never experimented with it before and Jamie walked me through it with no hesitation, helpful would be an understatement. I think it's safe to say she was more excited than I was!! (she is such a wizard with color lemme tell you) Molly did my wash and cut and just made the experience that much better! As a younger client, I often believe that my voice gets lost in a stylist's mind because of their experience level but I cannot praise both of these women enough for their communication and vision!
