Don't take your pet here if it is a real emergency. This vet literally killed my cat. We brought him here about a month ago because he was not acting right. The vet did an exam and (after $1600) determined that he was diabetic. Prescribed insulin and then assisted with monitoring his glucose levels three times a day for five days ($35 each glucose check). His levels were not leveling out so the vet recommended we purchase another vial of insulin because the first vial didn't seem to be working (another $100). When his glucose was still not leveling out, the vet kept our cat for several hours to assure that the insulin was being administered correctly and still his glucose was high. The vet then told us to stop giving him insulin and monitor him for a week. The vet did not suggest that we try a different type of insulin. We did not administer insulin the next day. By the evening, our cat was acting lethargic. He had a seizure in the morning and we rushed him to a pet hospital in Homosassa and they took him in immediately. Our poor cat was in kda - diabetic shock. He passed away soon after being admitted. They said he should have never been taken off of the insulin. Our family is heartbroken by the loss of our sweet cat and we are also out thousands of dollars while we were desperately trying to take care of him. My puppy seemed to have swallowed something in my yard and was gagging. I could not see anything in his mouth and went to this vet. Without checking his mouth nor his heart or lungs the female vet on schedule wanted to do an x-ray with sedation and blood work for over $1,500 that I needed to sign off on. While waiting I check my puppy's mouth and saw a thin little branch stuck up his gum and between his teeth that I removed. Had she done an exam, she would have seen the same thing. Instead, she was quick to suggest sedation and an x-ray. Be aware that this is overcharging for services not needed. I was very grateful for the compassionate way that this doctor helped my dog. She was very kind and caring to my dog and to us, and she throughly read all the results to make sure that she could give the best care to my diabetic dog. She helped me understand some of the things that would help my dog from getting sick in the future. The cost were explained to me upfront and surprisingly was cheaper than my regular vet. I went right before Christmas because my dog was ill and we were taken to a room to have my dog checked almost immediately, and the vet came in shortly there after to take care of him. I got great peace of mind in having my dog's issues resolved, and I will definitely be coming here again!! I love how people always are willing to complain and post bad reviews and a lot of people don't take the time to post good reviews, they just move on. I can tell you that the majority people that brought their dog here are happy and appreciative with the care they received because I thought my experience here was exceptional!! Our beautiful Frenchton, Ruby, slashed her back paw at 8 pm on a Monday night. She was running around the house, leaving blood everywhere! Of course, her regular Vet was out of the question at that hour! We were terrified on many levels, but the Doctors Mercer put us at ease and quickly took her back to examine her. She had severed an artery and needed emergency surgery! Of course, we held our breath while trying to figure out how to pay, but once we did, they wasted no time doing a wonderful job saving her life! There were no surprises, no nickel & diming or extra charges for the follow up visits. I would like to begin by stating that the staff at Urgent Vet in Crystal River were nothing but compassionate and my problem is not with them. I had a 15-year-old cat that rapidly went into liver failure over the Christmas weekend. I was hoping he could make it until Monday when I could call them but by Sunday, it was obvious it couldn't wait. They put me in an exam room and took my cat back to have the IV put in. While they were doing that, the receptionist came to see if I wanted to pay... It was $490. A family member had sent $200 to help with the cost and I was fortunate I had enough on Care Credit for the rest. The exam fee was $65 - very low for an emergency vet. I would have gladly paid more, especially since it was Christmas Day. The prices for the euthanasia itself and the cremation were highly overpriced. The fee for euthanasia was $264 and communal cremation was $114. I didn't really have a choice - it wasn't like I could take him back home with me. I called another nearby emergency vet this week to see if what they charged was similar. Their office visit was $135 (which I expected to be high,) euthanasia was $177 and cremation was $30. If I had gone there, it would have been over $100 less than what I paid at Urgent Vet.  I feel like I was taken advantage of at a very vulnerable time when I was out of my mind with a cat that was suffering so much that I had to euthanize him. I expected it to be expensive and I wasn't asking for a hand out, but I expected more reasonable prices for the actual services and I expected it to be less expensive. read more

I was forced to put one just to leave this review. Please, if you love your pet your animal to this incompetent uneducated person. Natalie Mercer should not have a veterinarian license. She diagnosed my dog and $1200 stating that my dog should be put down immediately saying that he had a tumor in his stomach that was bleeding. We took my to Gainesville UF emergency small animal where they diagnosed him and took many and said there are no tumors his stomach is not bleeding. He does have pancreatitis because he ingested something and he is currently in the ICU. Thanks this incompetent who told my daughter that we're gonna put her dog to sleep, my dog is in the ICU $5000 later and he could've been taken care of the very night. We took him to Natalie Mercer if she had listened to us and put him on an IV fluid treatment plan. My doberman fell off my golf cart while going for our daily run and i brought him here by recommendation from medowcrest who rejected us. we did look at reviews as we where in the room already so we were a bit nervous bc our dog has a small hole that may have needed stitches. The lady that doesn't wear shoes was very nice and i really didnt mind that she wasn't wearing any lol. It was very quick for $200 but it woudlve been $320 but they decided not to shave the wound or cut his nails bc i had already cut them prior so it woudlve been a waste. they could have easily talked us into putting our dog under and getting surgery like some vets would have to make a pretty penny but the doctor was very professional and gave us exactly what we were looking for and needed so I don't think they were trying to scam us in any way and the prices are normal for a vet hospital. i wish i asked more questions about my pup but overall it was a great visit. she said that stitches shouldn't be necessary and she was right it healed perfectly on its own using the antibiotics by mouth and cream that they prescribed. For anyone else that is worried about extensive vet bills, please look into insurance it really does come in handy if your dog is clumsy! Terrible place, terrible staff, even worse vet, all of it was so subpar, I've never experienced anything like it.. When we first got there there was a lady sobbing (assuming due to bad news) in the lobby, and left shouting that they were all sales people. So sad and uncomfortable to hear and witness. Then we are in the room and you would truly think they have never been around an animal before in their lives. They were so weird around my dog that they ended up scaring her and she barked (that's all), and they deemed her aggressive. Then they mocked us and refused to give back our new patient paperwork / consent form. Truly so sad that this is the only option in the area for pet emergencies.. especially since they are fully incompetent. Addition - we are from tampa and visiting family for the weekend and our dog ate quite a bit of chocolate so that was the emergency. She was throwing up the entire time while we were there. My shepherd developed a large mass on his leg very rapidly. He was under treatment at his normal vet; testing had been done, and a referral to UF was given. While we were waiting on UF for an appointment, his leg split open and he ended up with a big hole in the mass. I ended up bringing him to urgent pet vets for something temporary while waiting on UF, and was told it was cancer and had likely spread. (They had done no testing. Only a quick look at it. Which makes me question because a team of vets at his normal vet's office didn't know what it was) We arrived at 8:30, and sat in a room until 10. It's an urgent care for pets, I get it, there could have been more urgent cases. But once they got to us, the whole time it just seemed like they wanted to rush us out the door, so they could go home. We were given 2 options. To bring him back everyday at $160 a day for a dressing change, or to put him down. We ultimately decided to put him down rather than let him continue to be in pain. Throughout the whole process, it continued to seem like they just wanted to rush us out the door as fast as they could. Felt like a complete lack of empathy while I was saying goodbye to what I consider my child. This was already traumatic enough for me, because at 20, this is the first time I've ever had to sign away a loved one's life, and I was loosing a loved one at the same time. Their lack of care and empathy just made it so so much worse. I will never go back to urgent pet vets. This has taught me enough to know that I will be going to UF should I ever need after hours care for one of my pets again. I did not let them keep his body for cremation. The two women veterinarians that work URGENT VET in CRYSTAL RIVER FLORIDA, should not be working with animals. Natalie Mercer is the name of one of them and I don't have the name of the other one. I brought my cat Bootsie in due to the fact that he couldn't urinate. While waiting in one of the rooms they both came in and told me they will not treat my cat due the fact that my husband had called there and complained weeks ago, when I brought my cat in at night and they sent me to Ocala. I didn't arrive back home in Homosassa that night until 12:30am, traveling on dark roads that I am unfamiliar with, that are not divided, on a Saturday night....Unsafe travels. They told me to go back to Ocala, after I had informed them that I had just gotten back from a driving trip from New England, had driven for 8 hours that day, had driven 14 hours the day before. I was tired, stressed out because of my cat, (who was in obvious pain, crying) and under duress due to the fact that they were adamant that they would NOT treat him, unless I called my husband and told him to never call there again to complain, which I promptly did, as I sobbed. They told me that if I didn't want to take Bootsie to a Ocala, take him to Gainesville. This was at 8:30 p.m. They are supposed to care for animals, not care about their pride being hurt because someone scolded them. After refusing to leave with my cat in pain, they gave me two options... #1. Having them do the surgery at a cost of $2,500, which they obviously didn't want to do because it would have taken them past there 10:00 closing time, with no guarantees that the cat would make it through the anesthesia. I saw THAT writing on wall!! #2. Euthanizing him at a cost of $376. I have since learned that they could have easily drained his bladder that night ( Vet on YouTube) and I could have taken him to my regular vet the next day. Also that this is a common occurrence in male cats urinary tract. Not wanting my cat to be in any more pain or distress I chose option #2. I'm sorry Bootsie. You were the best cat EVER. I love you, I miss you and if given the choice again, I would NEVER EVER take you to those two uncaring, pride filled, self-centered, money hungry,power tripped so-called veterinarians, THAT COULDN'T HAVE CARED LESS ABOUT YOUR PAIN OR YOUR LIFE! I will say that in finality they seemed like they felt empathy for me since I was uncontrollably sobbing the whole time that I was there. They DID walk me out and carried the box with Bootsie in it. And they seemed sincerely sorry for me. I really wish they would have given me that feeling of empathy from the moment I walked in there. p.s. my advice would be to do your homework ahead of time, find a place that you would take your cat or dog or any animal under emergency conditions, so that you won't be subjected to the same pain that I'm going through. read more

I was shocked at this estimate and declined her services. She still charged me $85 for basically 10 minutes of her time and for a grossly inflated estimate. I wish I had seen ALL of the bad reviews before I made the appointment. There is good reason this business only has 2.5 stars! I took my dog to another local Vet and had the growth removed for $348 which included take home medications! The greed is disgusting! There's a reason they have a low rating! I have a cat that needs anti-seizure meds. I work M-F and was told Urgent Pet Vets would be able to see me on Saturday. They gave me a script for meds and I went on my happy way. This was last Spring. I called them a week ago and specifically asked if they could give me a refill on the script or did I need to bring my cat in. I was told since it had not been 1 year since his last visit, I would be able to come get a script refill from the doctor. I live over half an hour away so I made sure to call first. Today (Saturday), I got there and was promptly told I needed to have my pet with me and they could not give me a refill. I asked to speak with the doctor and was told she was "busy". I was the ONLY person there so I'm not sure what she was busy doing. Do not even bother with this place. They are not super friendly and then they were no help at ALL. If they can't even communicate within their office staff of what procedures are, I certainly would not trust them with my pet. read more

Rip off! I recently visited the clinic with my dog who injured his paw. We are visiting from out of town and was late in the day so did not have a lot of options. Should have known when I called there was it was not busy and there was not another car in the parking lot. The initial price to evaluate my dogs paw was $1300. They wanted to do multiple x-rays of his spine and leg and I said no I just wanted one of his leg but the cost remained the same at $783. The best price I was able to negotiate after cutting back everything I possibly do was $998. Dr. Mercer, who acted as if she had grave concerns upon her eval found nothing in the X-ray and sent us home with some pain medication. The next day my Boston was not even limping so, basically we spent $1,000 for nothing. In retrospect, I wish I would have left and driven another 1/2 hour in pursuit of a reputable, reasonable vet. DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, take your pets here whatsoever. Unfortunately they are the only Emergency vet in our area, so we were forced to go here. Our dog injured his leg on a Saturday night, we were worried it was broken it was so bad. Ran him 45 minutes to Crystal River. We walked in carrying him because of his hurt leg (he couldn't/didn't want to walk, nor did we want him to). Once we handed him over to the "Lead Tech" she put a make shift leash on him and put him on the floor. She then proceeded to FORCE him to walk. Not only force him to walk while clearly in distress, she brought him to a small set of stairs and DRUG him up the stairs when he couldn't make it up them! Poor animal, with a possible broken leg and in terrible, obvious, pain was forcefully drug up the stairs with his back legs trailing behind him. When confronted with the situation the ultimate decision that was made was that Urgent Pet Vet would be REFUSING SERVICE because "they assumed that we wouldn't be happy with their service in the end". They were told that it was no issue with the establishment, but with that tech specifically, and were asked to please please please treat our dog because he was in so much pain and they still refused. When the time came to bring our dog out and to the car, my mom was in there by herself dealing with the vet. We were out in the truck with my 4 year old nephew. The vet, nor anyone else, offered to help my 5'4" mother pick up her 45 lb. dog and carry him to the car. They also just stared and watched her struggle to open the door while carrying him, not even offering to open the door for her! Complete and utter lack of compassion for animals and their pet parents. Should not even be allowed to look at another dog much less treat one. read more

I do appreciate that there is a place close by for pet emergencies without having to go to Ocala, however had to pay $65 for a "physical exam" and yet the vet never even touched my dog to examine him (he had been vomiting). They just want to charge you for X-rays no matter what is wrong. We have taken our dachshund here twice. First time he had a UTI. The Dr tested his urine, but also wanted to do an X-ray because she said male dogs don't get UTIs and it could be something else. it was a UTI as we thought. Cost over $800. The next time we went here, his front paw had a red bump with black inside it. He was not walking on it at all. He also had a fever. The DR said the bump was "normal" and insisted on taking X-rays of his BACK. They took X-rays and an outside source read them- took an hour. They said his front paw hurts because of his back. She gave him muscle relaxers. $700 this time. He is still not walking and I've called his regular vet. Everytime they see a dachshund, they assume anything wrong has to be their back, because dachshunds are known to have back problems. When they actually do have a back problem, it affects their back legs, not the front. If we have any more emergencies, we will go to UF in Ocala. read more

I waited in a room for over an hour while my dog was suffering /vomiting and he collapsed and aspirated. Then the receptionist came in with an estimate of almost $1400, including a $679 charge for xrays. I said can't we have an exam first? I was told I could not be present during the exam because they needed a "controlled environment." What kind of bullsh*t is this? I am here with my dog in distress and you have not even taken his temp! At this point I would not even want them to touch my dog. I said I am going to another vet, you people obviously do not care about animals. It's all about the money. So I tried to leave and was told I had to pay $65 for an "office visit." This Urgent Pet Vet got a 5 star rating from me. Everything from the initial phone call, directions to the place and the pleasant greeting and quick exam of the pup, was superb. I left my house about 4:45. I was home at 6:10 PM. They did not waste anytime getting my "broken pup" all fixed up! They got my pup into a room as soon as I walked in and had a tech in for a quick look. This 7.5 month old pup presented a piece of bone stuck in its rectum. The pup was given a mild sedative, and then they gently removed the bone. There was obvious discomfort for the pup, but the vet provided some meds (pain relief, antibiotic and anti-diarrhea). AS a local veterinarian, I feel that Dr. Mercer has filled a greatly needed gap in our acute care in this county. I have referred my clients for after hours care or care we can't provide and have gotten nothing but fantastic feedback. They are caring and very thorough, they are reasonably priced. I do advise call before you go as they are the ONLY place open after hours. If they are in the middle of a intense case, you might need to wait and a quick call can let you wait at home or head right in. Thank you Urgent Pet Vet for providing a necessity to Citrus County. Please realize they are only 1 vet at a time there so there is a limit to how many they can see. Also realize they are NOT a 24hr care facility, but 3pm-11pm Tuesday-Friday (closed Monday) and open 10am-10pm Sat/Sun and Holidays. read more

I took my cat in to see Vet because she was straining to have a b.m. but could not. It was on Friday late afternoon. Bill was listed at $1,097, but I reduced it down to $827. X-rays and urinalysis were done. We left her and had a call saying the doctor wanted to talk with us. When we arrived back, a tech came in stating we would not see a doctor & said apparently she was not eating enough. I was able to get her an appt. with her regular Vet who asked me if they had given her something for her urinary tract infection. I said I did not know she had one. My poor cat went to her litter box every 3-5 minutes over the weekend trying to poop but urinated each time. She had to be in pain from UTI. She was given a prescription by her regular vet for antibiotic. Employees and Vet friendly at Emergency Vet Care, but I cannot recommend it as my cat received no treatment and I was not allowed to talk with Vet at pickup time. I called on Saturday, was told a Vet or tech would call me. I never got the call. As a retired R.N., I would possibly have been fired for this lack of care. read more

They've always been great and caring with any pet I've brought there for the last two years. I've never felt they've done unneeded scans or bloodwork. I've also felt the prices were fair for an urgent vet. Dr Mercer also comes out and defends and protects her employees when people come in acting rude and nasty they are the only ones there and are more important than anyone else and that speaks volumes to me. It's a walk in urgent care vet. If someone gets there before you with a serious emergency then you have to wait. It's how it works. read more
