It was the perfect excuse to get dressed up and try something new, with a twist of course... delicious cocktails. The Edgar Allan Poe experience itself was really well done. The actors were fantastic and fully committed to their roles. I loved the costumes and the dramatic personalities. It made the whole evening feel immersive without being over the top. I'm actually at the museum about once a month for meetings, so it was fun to see the space used in a completely different way. My only wish is that we had a little more time to wander and take in the current exhibits, because it's such a beautiful setting. My one real downside is parking. With the recent changes, it has become pretty difficult to find a spot that is easy to get in and out of, especially during a New England winter. Definitely something to plan ahead for. Overall, such a unique and memorable night. I would absolutely recommend grabbing your friends and checking this out if it comes back around.

At the time, not as many flowers were in bloom as I had hoped to see, so much of the garden looked very green and it was sometimes tricky to tell if I had already walked through a section. That said, the scenery was still beautiful, and I can only imagine how stunning it must look when everything is fully bloomed. Sakonnet itself is such a unique place a secret garden carved into coastal fields, designed to feel like an intimate, winding cottage garden with paths that lead you to unexpected spaces. Knowing the history and the care that's gone into creating it over decades makes me appreciate it even more. I'd definitely love to come back later in the season to see it in full bloom

My friend and I made reservations for the first time entry time on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The website was easy to use to make the reservations. Since I drove us there, we chose the Garden Visit (Car, driver, and optional passengers) + 1 additional passenger option. The parking spot with driver is $25.00 and the additional passenger was $20.00. The other option is Garden Visit for walkers (foot) and bikers that is $20.00. Tickets are nonrefundable once purchased. We arrived a few minutes before 9:30am and parked in one of the numbered parking spots provided in the designated area adjacent to the garden. Then, we found the garden entrance and checked in with the staff member. The staff member instructed us where to start and then we started to explore the labyrinth of plants. There were so many plants, hedges, and a big meadow. It was really beautiful, but I wish there was a map or list of the different plants we were looking at. The red mughal pavilion was falling apart and blocked off. My friend and I spent about an hour exploring the garden. The weather was gorgeous, not a cloud in the sky. You can definitely tell the caretakers really take a good care of the lands. At the end before leaving to the parking lot, a friendly pony greeted us and there was a table of plants for sale.

Also was able to get information on their children and other aspects about the area. The staff is very friendly and interested in helping you find that missing connection, don't be afraid to ask for help :) The only downside of this place is the state of some of the machines...they are really expensive to replace, so its understandable that some are in bad condition. Just remember to leave your pens at home! Bring some money for the photocopy machines.

This review is for the library only, not the entire RIHS…read more First off, the gated front door is a bit unwelcoming, I hit the button and they buzz me in, you maybe? Go ahead try it. The library itself is small once inside but it has lots and lots of microfiche, directories, family histories, etc. You can find RI newspapers going back to 1700s on the fiche. Looking for a dead body? They have a huge database of RI burial grounds / cemeteries and their burials going back to the 1600s - it's how I found a lot of my family bones. They also have a lot of special collections, photos, etc. I was please to be able to read first hand how my great grandfather met Abraham Lincoln along with other members of his regiment during the Civil War, and many other entries made by its regimental officers. They give a first hand account of daily life back then. I think the daily fee is three dollars, but go ahead and just buy a yearly membership to the entire society for $40, and check out all their other programs.

Bottom Line: A historical building housing a lovely gift shop and exhibits about local history…read more I really enjoy a local museum so during a brief visit to the area I visited the Newport Historical Society Museum and Shop. The building itself dates back to 1762 and once served as a market, dry goods storage and granary, among other things. Today the bottom floor houses a nice gift shop and the second floor consists of the museum. The museum exhibits start with the history of the native people that inhabited the area and then cover different aspects about the people, businesses and past times of Newport. The museum exhibits combine original artwork and historical artifacts with documentary films. Also, there was helpful object labels throughout the museum. Museum admission is donation based and the employees were friendly. The museum is located in downtown Newport so we parked in a public lot a few blocks away.

I believe all my disappointment stems from the second floor lacking anything amazing. The only good part of this mansion was the backyard and the water view. My kid went nuts in the yard. She loved it. If I could go back in time, I'd tell myself to skip the mansion tour and just go straight to the backyard for free. Good day.

The interior is more sparsely furnished than some of the other mansions, as the house is often used for private events, and is also a popular filming location, having been featured in movies and shows such as The Great Gatsby, True Lies, and HBO's The Gilded Age. The second floor is an exhibition space with changing displays - the current exhibit is on Richard Morris Hunt, America's premier Gilded Age architect, whose contributions included the Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC, parts of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, as well as many summer cottages of Newport RI and Manhattan's Fifth Avenue mansions of their day. While the house and grounds are lovely and is a grand example of Gilded Age era architecture and excess, if your desire is to see opulently furnished rooms and decorative arts, then I would pick one of the other mansions to visit first.
