So after making the decision to spend $6,000 a year to join Dr. Lansky's practice, I was told instead, I'd have to join Dr. Croghan's practice and pay $10,000 as I was "too complicated" to "only pay" $6,000. I had the "privilege" of overhearing how they feel about their clients. "Oh, I hate the perimenopause ones- IM FAT AND HAVE SYMPTOMS BUT I DONT WANT TO GO ON MEDICATION AND GAIN MORE WEIGHT". "THE NEWBIE GYNES ARE SO CUTE WITH THEIR STIs." I was stunned. I went to the restroom, came out, and Dr. Plawyer's nurse was waiting for me. I told her of the incident and she said "I'm sorry to hear that" and then went over my med list and medical history while I'm on the verge of tears. I finally stood up and said "I'm leaving." I did receive a voicemail apologizing and saying it was addressed. However, as a nurse for the past 10 years I understand on a deeper level that the comfort they felt talking about patients at work indicates a culture of not respecting their patients. When we go to the doc we want to feel heard, be taken seriously, and be met with empathy and assistance. I no longer believe this happens at this clinic. Find a clinic that doesn't mock their patients.

This all changed today and I want to warn others, not because I think there's a problem with the medical review, but office operations and policy for the office are in a word concerning. When making an appointment, I received a text from the office asking me to "text a screenshot of my medical card" so they could verify coverage. This was extremely disconcerting in an age of identity theft and personal information security breach. Despite this, I complied with the request and informed the office assistant that I would review my concerns with the doctor because this was highly irregular. The office assistant informed me "I truly don't I can do much with just your insurance card. I would need all your medical information." What I was trying to point out wasn't that she would personally do anything with my information, but that the possibility of a patient's information residing on someone's personal smartphone wasn't probably the best policy. I again emphasized that if that information would be lost, the doctor would be liable. Two minutes later, this was followed up by another text, "I will delete the image now that it's in your chart" and that the alternative for sending a screenshot was to drive to the doctor's office prior to my visit as they were trying to save me from an advanced trip. Funny, when I had changed my insurance in the past this was never an issue. I didn't respond to this text and again, complied with the request without further issue. One hour later, I receive a text "after conferring with the office and completing a full cost-benefit analysis - it was decided that perhaps you should find another practice that suits your needs better than Associated Medicine Physicians. We took the liberty of canceling your visit. Be well." I wanted to post this here because it's important for both customer and doctors to understand how serious securing personal information is in today's world. Most data breaches happen not because the original intent of the information by the initial parties was to do something detrimental. Rather, data breaches happen often because those handling it either aren't completely clear about the limits and extent to which the technology their using (assumed deletion) can be used against them by bad actors, or, most common, unintentional transfer of information usually done unknowingly. Regardless It's important to call this out because no one wants to turn on the news or read online they were unintentionally a victim of a data breach. Dr. Levy is a good doctor. However, I'd think twice before sending my personal data via text to an office assistant if I were still a patient with the practice.

I really liked my doctor who is affiliated with Northwestern. I had a few instances in the past…read moreyear where I couldn't get in to see her and was sent to urgent care instead. She always responded to mychart messages right away, but I realized if I ever wanted to see a doctor in person again (outside of a physical that I had to book 6 months+ in advance) I needed to go the concierge route. I asked friends and did some research on Yelp for beloved concierge doctors and called around. I found that pricing varied (3-9k annually) and many of them had very long waitlists. It seemed that many were loving Thrive Internal Medicine, but I was bummed to hear that Dr. Petrugano and Dr. Berg weren't taking any new patients. They did tell me they had a new doctor (Dr. Kalember) that was taking new patients and I could set up a zoom to see if I'd like to move forward. I really enjoyed meeting Dr. Kalember via zoom, but couldn't find much information about her. I was a little wary about spending 4k annually on a concierge doctor when I had a dr thru Northwestern that I really liked (even if I couldn't get an appointment). And so I decided to hold off. And then my 8 year old blessed me with a horrible case of pink eye (top 5 worst things my children have given me) and I couldn't get into my doctor once again. I decided maybe it was worth giving Dr. Kalember a try and signed up for the service. Fortunately, since becoming a patient I've been relatively healthy (knock on wood) and haven't taken advantage of the concierge service too much. I did have a helpful in person intro meeting and a physical (which I booked just a few weeks beforehand). I was in and out within 30 minutes of both appointments and spent the entirety of those 30 minutes with the doctor. I've reached out to fill prescriptions and she's gotten back to me in record time. She has also been out of town once since I signed up and sent instructions for how to get in touch with her partners during that time. They use the spruce app to connect with them, which is very user friendly. I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger on concierge medicine and have been encouraging my husband to do the same. I'm sure a lot of the helpfulness depends on how great the doctor is, but so far I'm having a great experience with both Thrive and Dr. Kalember.

We kept the doctor updated regarding the medication's success. But after my the prescription ran out and five phone calls requesting a refill and explaining that we' had had a terrible financial year and a huge deductible, Ewing refused to call in more medication. She insisted that we scheduled another appointment and we had to wait 3 months because she is booked up. My daughter's acne returned with a vengeance while we waited to see the doctor. Then I had to pay $200 to sit in her office so she could hand me the RX I had requested months earlier. This is why health care reform is so critical. Dr Ewing gets the cash and we get screwed.
