They recently upgraded all the stations along the US-36 corridor with new covered seating and digital schedule displays. This is a huge upgrade from what they had before! There is also a paper map of bus routes with daily schedules available for you to peruse at your leisure. This particular station has plenty of parking no matter when you arrive. There is a pedestrian tunnel under US-36 to an additional parking lot and the westbound gates. Busses generally run on-time, although I have encountered a couple instances when they didn't show up at all. Aside from that, though, this is a great alternative to driving! Pro-Tip: if you have an iPhone (or other smartphone), there are lots of great apps for tracking public transit. My personal favorites are Moovit & Transit. If you frequently use RTD, these are really helpful.

He's energetic and peppy in the morning, which makes for a very enjoyable ride to school. The Golden Call-N-Ride is an extention of RTD public transit services. They have a scheduled route, a flex route (runs at certain time intervals), and a call-in service. You must call and reserve a pick-up at least 2 hours in advance. While I have not used the call-in service, I have called to ask them to stop on a flex route stop outside of their flex route hours. The "Golden green bus" is incredibly convenient as it stops at the Colorado School of Mines and the JeffCo Light Rail Station. As a CSM student, I get a discounted bus pass every year which makes for easy commuting. I am very excited that RTD expanded their service out to Golden. I'd like to see light rail service to the airport next (crossing my fingers that it was connect with the W-line with only one transfer!).

In recent weeks, there have been a number of problems, including a 55 minute wait to be picked up one afternoon, a bus that never showed on another afternoon, drivers who have not been trained (to the extent that they don't know the routes or, at times, even how to use their onboard computer/GPS system), and a missed connection at light rail on one morning. As I say, all of these incidents have taken place within recent weeks, and I never had trouble with the previous contractor. I do not fault the drivers. With one exception, the new drivers have all been pleasant, and I don't mind providing directions as needed. I am absolutely dependent on the service and I really need it to work as it used to work. Don't want to leave your beloved bike behind? Affix it to the outside/front of the bus. The contraption looks quite complicated but with a little help or experimentation you're sure to get the hang of it pretty quickly. Some of the most convenient rides I've been most thankful for are to Nederland for Frozen Dead Guy Days (FDGD). Nothing beats relaxing on the bus ride up & back, particularly when the roads are a mess from the snow (that happened my first year to FDGD). Who wants to mess with the parking and risking harm to others if you opt to imbibe at this annual event? The seats are comfy and adjustable. Most rides to Denver (FF1) that I've taken have allowed me my own set of seats with room to stretch out and read or just relax. The drivers are often friendly and happy to strike up a chat (it's been a habit of mine since grade school to befriend the bus drivers). There's a help/police desk inside the station aside from the purchase window (where you can buy passes etc.) These gents were so kind helping me navigate the multipack vending machine inside the station. To note there is also an electronic vending machine just outside the doors to the station (behind the benches) for day passes etc. both this machine as well as the indoor vending machine take credit cards. If you have a few days before your travels you can also purchase many passes online and they will mail them out to you. Discount passes are also available. Check out the RTD website for more info. The bathroom is typically clean and great for a quick stop before the bus ride (as I haven't been on any buses with toilets). Overall convenient, eco friendly, relaxing, and affordable way to travel from Boulder to DIA/Denver I've experienced. This means you are looking at $10 per person for a round trip. This might make economic sense for 1 person, but if you are a group of 4 or 5 people going out for the evening, you could drive downtown, pay for gas and $10 for parking, and still come out $20 to $30 ahead. Also, you would get downtown faster, not spend as much time cooling your heels at the station (or have to change trains on the weekend), and probably wind up much closer to your intended destination. It is neither convenient nor cost effective for many people.

I simply walked inside, stared at the ceiling, drank coffee, and conducted myself like a person who had accidentally discovered that a transportation building can be a tourist attraction. The central room is called the Great Hall, and it is appropriately named. It features sixty-foot arched ceilings, giant chandeliers, and Beaux-Arts masonry that suggests important historical figures in dramatic clothing ought to be striding through the doors. The original station opened in 1881, burned down in 1894 because wooden structures are vulnerable to fire, and was rebuilt in 1914. A century later, after a long period of quiet decline, it was reimagined as a combination of train terminal, boutique hotel called The Crawford, cocktail venue known as the Terminal Bar, and general indoor living room for the public. It should be noted that it is not meant to stand in as a bedroom, however, as my friend was sternly warned about napping there by a camera guided security officer. If you look closely, the building contains small physical clues about the past. There are display cases showing forgotten items recovered from the original wooden waiting benches, vintage railroad artifacts, and framed architectural blueprints from 1914. These objects serve as physical proof that millions of long-gone citizens once sat in this exact space holding tickets to towns that have since changed beyond recognition or disappeared entirely. I stood with a hot beverage and watched the endless parade of organisms. There were hurried commuters, confused tourists, hotel guests with rolling suitcases, and individuals who had entered for no apparent reason other than that the room was warm and visually pleasing. Outside, Wynkoop Plaza connects the granite building to the Lower Downtown neighborhood with splash fountains and outdoor benches. You can buy a cocktail, eat an expensive meal, or sit on a plush couch and contemplate the sheer volume of human lives that have intersected under this roof over the past one hundred and forty years. I cannot report on whether the Amtrak trains operate according to their printed schedules. Based on my personal experience, I would doubt it, but that is hardly the fault of the station. I have no opinion regarding the cushioning of the waiting room chairs. I did not inspect the platform boarding platforms. I came strictly to observe a magnificent survivor made of stone and iron, and the station performed its duty. Sometimes the most satisfying place to arrive is the building originally constructed to send you somewhere else.
