You could view the trucks and the children could take photos inside the cab of the truck. It really was cool! They even had balloon animals for the children. My family and I went together, we were greeted by several people while handing out tickets to them. Then you proceed to the food line! We received some monster sized pancakes and sausage. All VERY delicious. Everyone sat inside the pristine garage where the trucks/engine are kept. Several of the Captains were present at the pancake breakfast. Which was really cool! So everyone could meet the Captains, the Engineers, the Firemen, and the Medics that work with them as well. If you ever get the chance to stop by at an event they are having, I highly suggest doing that! They are all very nice and welcoming.

When hiking to the st water at Mt Wilson we passed an unfortunate accident. A man was bitten pretty…read morebadly by a dog. We saw the fireman from unit 41 climb the steep trail later we saw search and rescue both teams like it was nothing. I should say now that I am terrified of heights and this was my first time on this trail with my boyfriend and our two dogs. (Not involved in the dog bite incident). On our way down I was paralyzed by fear. This is no joke at this elevation. I was panicking and crying but trying my best to forge on because I knew if I didn't keep going I would be stuck there for hours. We see a helicopter leave and a minute later we see them decending behind us. We try to let them pass and they ask me if im okay. I tell them I'm scared but I'm ok physically. They offer to walk down next to me and I grab the chance without hesitation. They took their time walking next to me and making me feel at ease. I was in full panic and anxiety attack mode but with the help of my amazing bf who never left my side and these dedicated and compassionate men who took time out of their day we made it down the trail safe. I have the utmost respect and gratitude beyond measure for their help in immediately creating a shield of the edge and blocking my view of the steep drop down. Advising me on how to properly manage the terrain and calming me down with small jokes along the way. Their patience is outmatched and the call was above and beyond their duty. I cant say I will ever hike that trail again but I have a newfound appreciation for the men and women of service who are dedicated diligent kind compassionate and empathetic. My hats are off to you guys!! If my memory serves me right especially to Diaz Turner and Arroyo sorry if I got it wrong but you guys are epic!!! Thank you for assisting this "timid" hiker the nicest way of saying terrified and panicked beyond belief. Lol

There seem to be pockets of homeless scattered throughout the city and for some reason they like hanging around in front of the bus stop near my work. Shopping carts, bags and boxes of shit in front and back of my workplace... sometimes I have people just taking a nap on the walkway, in the middle of the day. Really?! So far, the police have been cool about getting rid of them (at least temporarily) and dealing with them if and when they get crazy. More frequent patrols in the area to provide a stronger police presence would be great though.

When leaving King's Fitness this morning I was blocked by a El Monte police truck pulling a horse…read moretrailer. The cops parked their rig on the street in front of the Donut Man but its length blocked King's drive. When I hit the horn to alert them that I was attempting to leave a guy (cop ?) approached me arguing they have horses in the trailer and that fact gives them the right to stop there or something just as incomprehensible. I quickly explained they were blocking the entrance to a commercial business and no amount of horses will excuse suck conduct. When the guy continued to argue with me I finally ask did you guys become entitled pricks after becoming cops or did you bring that offensive personality to the job. Finally a lesser prick moved the rig so I could leave.

Review #919 2025-096…read more My son is taking Cantonese 2 at South Bay Chinese School & placed 1st on 10/11/25 Penmanship Competition, earning an entry to compete in the 11/16/25 Southern California Council of Chinese Schools 2025 Fall Academic Competition (南加州中文學校聯合會 2025 秋季學術比賽) in Beginner Level Penmanship (硬筆寫字 初級組) held at Arcadia High School. He also placed penmanship previously: 1st in 2023 - 2024 school year & 4th in 2024 - 2025 but I missed the emails to confirm for the regional competition. In his 1st regional competition, M place 6th (廖文凱 硬筆寫字 初級組 第六名)! \ (^ o ^) / The Southern California Council of Chinese Schools 2025 Fall Academic Competition Awards Ceremony (南加州中文學校聯合會 2025 秋季學術比賽頒獎典禮) was held on 11/30/25 at the Culture Center of Taipei Economic & Culture Office in Los Angeles. (洛杉磯華僑文教服務中心). It was quite a production... taking almost 2 hours! I'm so proud of my l'il one. I believe he was the only Cantonese student awardee in the ceremony (though I did see an awardee from the Chinese School of San Diego, not sure if the student was in the Mandarin or Cantonese program but it's a higher probability that the student is in their Mandarin program), even more proud that he's trying to continue to learn about his heritage & representing Cantonese since it's so difficult to find a Chinese school that teaches Cantonese. Due to the influx of 300+ people attending the ceremony, their private lot was jam packed but we arrived early enough to find free street parking. I also found out from our school that the Office was giving away books to attendees on a first come first serve basis; I picked up a Chinese chicken recipe book that provided the recipes in English & Chinese, & M grabbed a couple of Chinese comic books (we may need to use Google Translate's camera to try & "read" them). I'm not familiar with CCTECO, but there's a lot of art displayed in their lobby. There's also several conference rooms for meetings, & a large auditorium (where the awards ceremony was held). The Office is located on Telstar Ave. in a somewhat isolated part of El Monte. I was surprised to learn from their website of the original Culture Center in Los Angeles Chinatown (I born & raised in Chinatown & don't remember seeing this center), & the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) relocated the center to Santa Ana in 09/2005 to serve Orange County. I'm not likely to visit Culture Center of Taipei Economic & Culture Office in L.A. again unless my son continues to compete in Chinese school competitions.

Parking is never a problem here - there are plenty of spaces and the parking lot is free. There are restrooms (and lots of them). And the amenities have generally been well kept across the years I've been here. I've submitted college applications for universities in Taiwan here. I've also come here for multiple music performances, attended leadership conferences, joined TAP or TJCC hosted events here, and much more. You can also renew your Taiwan passport here - they're really helpful and can also answer any questions via phone call (but they might speak limited English).
