The good thing and bad thing about this US Post Office location is that it's smaller than the one on 30th Ave. When it's not busy, that means you're easily in and out without having to do much navigating. When it is busy (like it was when I went to mail out my small package) you're going to be waiting for quite some time, because there's typically just one person working. I came here on a weekday at 3 pm to mail out some Passport documents and drop off a package that already had paid postage on it. The women at the front of this line were mailing (I'm not exaggerating) 50 envelopes for their small business, one by one. The guy in front of me eventually gave up and (I'm assuming) walked over to the Broadway USPS which probably was faster than waiting here. A solid 20 minutes later they were finally done. The next woman who walked up to the counter asked how many envelopes they'd mailed, the guy at the counter said it had to be over 50 and that these ladies were in here every week. She asked what day of the week they come so that she could avoid coming in here on that day, which made me laugh. Once the ladies were gone the line moved quickly. The person working the counter was knowledgeable about mailing passport documents and recommended the fastest, most cost effective method for me to choose. read more

i needed to send a document overnight to florida via the post office and no stress at the long island city /broadway post office and its because the self service machines have manners and dont talk back .overall its not a bad place as the line was moving in a brisk pace and window clerks seem nice enough , plenty of postal supplies are ready to be filled out and place is clean and organized .with all that said , i am still doing the self service way (,no cash , cards only) .3 stars for the neighborhood post office in astoria. read more

Old location, no drop boxes for packages, no automated shipping kiosks, so if you have something with a prepaid label such as an Amazon return or something you sold on eBay you need to wait in line and the line moves slowly. I was there at 4pm on a weekday, there were 2 people in front of me and it took me 10 minutes to get help mainly because the employees were having a fun conversation while we waited. Also, the Asian guy is very picky. If your package weighs 1 lb and 7oz but the label says 1 lb and 6oz he won't accept it. Just go to the Broadway or Ditmars locations. read more

I am a small connoisseur of the US Postal Service. I know how to use the automatic teller machine and I can fill out my customs forms like a pro. I know the difference between parcel post and first class and I know when insurance is worth it and when its not. I'm a post office veteran. The Steinway Post Officeis mostly understaffed so if you come and there are more than five people in line, I'd suggest trying another time. The location is small so it can't accommodate long lines. It's also an older station which is in need of an upgrade. They do not have an automated machine. The people are okay but they could benefit from more help if the government would hire more clerks. The main line takes care of packages/weighing, complex transactions. There is a smaller right side line which may or may not be open that handles selling stamps only. (You know they sell stamps online and will mail them to you, right???) I dislike that they don't have a package drop box, so every time I need to drop off a package with a label already on it, I feel like I'm jumping the line. read more

Absolutely horrible, rude, nasty, completely unacceptable, unprofessional behavior from BOTH clerks. This is not my usual post office as I typically go to Broadway & 43rd Street in Astoria. From the moment I went to the clerk she was flat out rude to the point I thought I was being punk'd! Then the customer next to me had an even ruder clerk. The woman simply needed help with a tracking number and the clerk kept saying my manager handles that and he is on vacation come back next week. While I agree with most people complaining about how dirty and slow the "customer service" is, this is expected from all USPS. Actually, maybe the ones in Manhattan are slightly better. Only slightly. There is almost always only ONE clerk at the front. Even if there are more than 5 customers waiting on line. You can hear the other USPS employee laughing it up in the backroom. You noticed that I wrote "employee," not "employees." These people are retired people who don't really give a hoot since they're getting paid by doing nothing (no shock there). If you're not going to work, please leave and give that job to those who need it. And if you're at work early, please stay quiet, it's frustrating to hear another unproductive employee NOT do any work when it's especially busy out in the front. But the problem doesn't stop there. It's the customers that are part of the problem as well. I've been stuck behind many of these "special" breed of people who don't know anything about the USPS and yet have the means of just looking it up on their phones before walking into the physical location. These "customers" take up the clerk's valuable time (not to mention ours) by asking asinine questions that can be easily answered if they bothered to look it up. All these people do is just shuffle in, then look at their phones with a deathly blank stare. How on Earth are USPS employees supposed to know how much your IMAGINARY package weighs, especially when you (the "customer") don't even have the very item you want to ship out? How big is it? It's this big (as the special "customer" gestures by spreading his or her hand out). Get the f*** outta here. Come back when you want to communicate like an adult. They never deliver packagage, and worse of all they dont even leave the notices that a package was attempted.. or that its at the post office and they didnt try to bring it with them. This is the absolute WORST post office I've ever been too. No matter what time of day, what time of year you will WAIT and WAIT to be served. They have 4 windows available and never more than 1 or 2 people working. If you are there to pick up a package that couldn't be delivered to your home, you will wait in line with everyone else even during Christmas season instead of being directed to the side door like you should be. I've even seen them tell people after waiting an hour in line that they couldn't find their package! The worst is when they tell you how understaffed they are when you can see people walking around in the back! The woman with the badly died red hair is the worst. It looks nice enough on the outside and then you step inside. Your soul just died a little. There are long lines, it's messy and if you need a priority mail box cross your fingers and head over to the poorly stocked station on the right but I can tell you right now, it's probably not properly stocked. Two stars for the staff though. They are usually pretty nice. I never have to spend more than 5 minutes at the window but I assume that's also because I actually know how to send something in the mail CORRECTLY. read more

I went there the other day to drop off a package and this asian lady was serving me. For some reason she started picking on my package for no reason to find a glitch. Finally she made her wish come true and found something, which the weight was a little more then the one on the label. I told her that I used my own scale and it is not exact like the one she had, and plus most of the scales would not give you the same results. I am expecting a package. The online tracking indicated it was delivered, however I have never received it. I went in on a Monday noon. The station manger/supervisor was polite and listened to my question carefully. She printed the tracking record from her computer, which gave me more information than the online version such as scanning time, package weight, etc. She noticed that my zipcode is 10002, which was not within her location's delivey area (11103 only). She told me there are at least 4 or 5 delivery centers in Astoria and each of them is responsible for a certain zones. She then wrote down the location address where I should go on a piece of paper and handed to me. I understand how frustrating post office experience can be. However, if a customer treats the USPS staff with respect, patience, and understanding, he would get the same in return. read more

I can't give a full 5-star rating since I haven't used all of their services, or experienced window service. But I had my first experience here on Saturday, and was THRILLED! I walked in to a well air-conditioned building. There was hardly any line. I was looking around trying to figure out which line to stand in, when an employee they had watching the floor actually acknowledged my need for assistance...and actually assisted me! She not only assisted me, but she did it joyously...as in real customer service from USPS!!!!!!! She retrieved my item without me having to stand in line, and was a gem! The postal lady was very nice and helped my out considerably with forward my friends mail. The employees at this post office are very sweet and do their best even though it is a very small office with room for only 2 employees (who are usually both there, and are both very nice). They work as quickly as they can while still getting the details correct. If people want a fancier place that is cleaner and maybe has a shorter line, there are UPS and Fedex stores close by on Steinway. If you want the lowest price with nice employees who give good service, come to this office. If you come during rush hours, you can expect a longer line, but that is the same in every business in an urban location. read more

On top of ZERO customer service skills whatsoever, the unpleasant woman I dealt with had me jumping through hoops to complete a transaction involving a stamped, pre-paid envelope that already had its postage...just needed to be mailed out. She insisted the need for a new certified mail label or "we can't do anything with this", which made absolutely no sense but I wanted to avoid any further interaction with this human being. Upon arriving home, I checked my package's tracking with USPS.com. Package not found. Not scanned. Who the hell knows where my package (containing VERY important documents) will end up...spending the evening on the phone with USPS trying to find my package was exactly how I wanted to spend my evening.
