The Art Deco design was chosen to blend in with the surrounding architecture. The post office was built under the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression in 1937. Features of the building include a central, barrel-shaped section with the rest of the building extending as wings down Washington Avenue and 13th Streets. The main feature of the building is a circular lobby with a cone-shaped roof and a tall, thin decorative copula topping it off. Inside the lobby are murals by Charles Hardman depicting Ponce de Leon's invasion of Florida on the wall above gold colored post office boxes. Charles Hardman, a native Floridian, was commissioned to paint the mural in 1940 by the Section of Fine Arts of the Works Progress Administration. The Section of fine arts commissioned over 1,300 murals and 300 sculptures. This part of the New Deal was created to employ artists and help them get back on their feet. Hardman created a three section mural called Episodes from the History of Florida to adorn the post office lobby wall. The mural sections are entitled Discovery, which shows Ponce de Leon's arrival in Florida in 1513, de Soto and the Indians, showing Hernando de Soto and his men engaged in battle with Native Americans in 1539, and Conference, which shows General Thomas Jesup negotiating with Native Americans after the Second Seminole War in 1837. Also in the lobby is a small, circular fountain that sits directly below a round light fixture that has been painted to resemble the sun set against a bright teal background.

Whenever I have gone inside to drop off PREPAID packages to the counter, I always get dirty looks from the people who have been standing in line for a long time. Unfortunately, there is no designated spot to drop your package off except to immediately go left to the counter after you enter. Once the postal lady finally looks at you, you loudly have to say "Prepaid," and she points to the counter without saying a word. Then carefully go around the angry people in line and get the heck out of there. If you go to the USPS website, they urge you to USE their prepaid service because it is quicker and easier, with no standing in long lines! But when you get to any post office, there are NO SIGNS where to place your package. This is a problem at every post office that I have tried. The counter area is usually a non-supervised place. I don't want my packages to be stolen or lost or forgotten. Then you have a whole set of new problems. I definitely do not enjoy going to a post office to mail anything. I won't even mention the attitudes of some of the employees.

White from Georgia and North Carolina. Along with Lemon City and Little River, Upper Buena Vista is one of the oldest settlements in Miami. Davis partnered with pineapple plantation owner Theodore V. Moore to develop two investment properties in Buena Vista. Davis designed both buildings but he only paid for one while Moore paid for the other. Designed in a masonry vernacular style, Davis' building became the Buena Vista Post Office with neoclassical design elements. Moore's building was built in an L shape around the post office. The south portion of the building was completed in 1922 and the north portion was completed in 1926. Moore gave up his pineapple plantation for commercial development. In the 1930s, he opened the T.V. Moore Furniture Store in his building and both the Buena Vista Post Office and Moore Furniture Building anchored the growing neighborhood. On August 4, 1924, the new town of Buena Vista was incorporated only to be annexed by the City of Miami the next year. At that time the post office ceased operation. The building as since served a variety of purposes through the years including a city hall, municipal courthouse, tire store, insurance office, restaurant, and clothing store. I struggled with the computer and had to keep asking for help. When I asked to see a manager, Junior finally came over. Unfortunately, he was condescending and talked down to me, showing no real understanding or empathy for my situation. I asked both John and Junior how they would assist someone older or less tech-savvy, like a little old lady, and neither could give me an answer. This was the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I will never go back, and I can't say anything good about the FedEx on Alton Road in Miami Beach.
