This review would be 5 stars if I were reviewing the employees only. Yes, the wait times here are often horribly long. However, every time I finally make it to the counter, I'm treated with cheerful customer service. Another reviewer mentioned Susan, who is so kind and helpful. There's another woman whose name I forget, but she calls people "doll" and "hon," and she is also extremely helpful. The bane of 19147. Hours and staffing have shrunk while the lines have grown ever longer. Wait times of 1 hour on Saturday are not uncommon, especially when you get one of the mentally unbalanced, angry customers at the front of the line. If I could give this terrible place -5 I would. Im standing online and have been for 15 minutes with 3 people in front of me and about 7 behind me. There is one person clearly working at a glacial place. I came here against my better judgement because I have thank you notes to mail. This is always my experience here. So glad this is no longer my post office. I have had many issues here including getting my mail and even changing my address. But something as simple as buying stamps is long, and never takes less then 20 minutes. Id like to watch this building burn ! Do not go here. I would honestly give this post office no stars if I could... It's really a shame how disorganized this place is. I can only blame the competence of the staff for how terrible the front end office is. Lines are extremely long. Tellers send you to the opposite side of the office to receive shipping, tell you there are no packages for your address, then after 10mins of questioning them someone else will ask your address, and the teller will realize she misread the pick up card wrong. Then proceed to tell you to get back at the end of the line so you can wait for her to check for mail for your correct address. Why do Queen Village packages have to go to this post office?! It's too far and impossible to get to during their limited hours if you have a day job! The lines are horrendous when you do make the time to get there... I've tried going during my lunch hour, on Saturdays, before they close during the week - and it's never a decent experience. This is one instance I wish there were negative stars. Time after time this post office leaves slips instead of taking a second to ring my bell. That means I have to deal with a half hour walk to this nightmare of a post office, a fifteen to twenty minute wait in line, the rudest, nastiest service imaginable and then with being told my package is "lost." This place deserves MINUS 10 stars. An absolute nightmare of a post office, I have nothing but bad things to say about this place, granted there are 1 or 2 helpful people there, as a whole this place is awful. First of all, after being told on numerous occasions to please put the mail in the correct box, they continue to not take heed. And EVERY SINGLE TIME I am expecting a package that's of any significant size, something goes wrong. Usually what happens is, I track the package, they say they attempted to deliver it even though I've been up expecting it, the doorbell never rings, then when i check the mail there is no calling card for me to collect it at the post office in person. So I take a walk to the post office, and I have to deal with attitude because sometimes a package will be sent in my married name and not my maiden name, then they want to see all kinds of proof of identification even though i can tell them, where the package is from, what is IN the package etc. Even after explaining that this is essentially their fault, I get nothing but attitude and passive aggressive remarks. Right up until today this is still happening. My mother sent a large box from Ireland, we tracked it this morning, it said they had tried to deliver it on the 9th (they did not) If they HAD attempted to deliver it, then a card would have been left.....there was no card. I call the post office this morning, the lady I speak to cuts me off, telling me she will have someone call me back, she only too my address after I offered her the tracking info and my name. She calls back, says its not there, then asks me for the tracking, she then tells me that that couldn't possibly be the tracking number, there are too many numbers ( I mean really???) Then she says, "oh well it says its here, but I looked everywhere and its not, I'll have to talk to the truck drivers". So, basically, my Christmas gift from my family in Ireland is gone because of the carelessness of this post office. I have been trying to get through to them for 2 hours to get an update, but conveniently their phone is off the hook, coincidence?? I think not (also not the first time that has happened). If there was a way I didn't have to ever deal with these guys, I never would. I am beyond upset that my mother spent a fortune to get my gift to me on time, and now its gone. read more

THEY NEVER RANG THE BELL!!!! I paid for $18.95 for express mail and I expected to receive on Saturday. I waited the whole morning on Saturday until I checked on my door at 12 PM. I've got the slip at 11 AM. I did not hear anything ....no knocking door and no bell ring. I am so pissed that I have to wait on Monday to pick up myself. I went to William Annex station in 9th St and Market St based on the address on the slip on Monday. I waited 40 minutes in the line and waited for 15 minutes when the teller went to search for my mail. 15 minutes???? I was so worried that they lost it. It is very important document. Yes I guessed it right. They don't have it. WTH??? Finally, they told me that based on my zip code that the mail should be in Southwark station. Apparently that the postman used the wrong slip. Oh I hate this station big time. I know them. Finally, I picked up my express mail on Tuesday. I am not happy about the service, I went on the next Saturday to complain and ask for refund. I paid for express mail and I should get on last Saturday not on Tuesday. However, the supervisor refused to refund me due to they left the slip and it is my fault for not hearing knocking door. Well at least I know that why they will go to bankruptcy. read more

This place is a disgrace to the US Postal Service. Neighbors have been battling with this postoffice for over a decade and nothing ever changes: long lines, (usually) rude employees, and mind-numbingly incompetent package service. As others have noted, mail carriers often leave pink slips without ever having tried to deliver the package, redelivery does not exist, and, worst of all, packages are often returned to sender without customers being notified of their existence. My family only sends things via UPS because they have experienced enough lost and returned packages from this crazy post office that they no longer want to risk it. I had better mail delivery in Cameroon. It's the best reason to move out of South Philly if you can afford it. But don't hand in your change of address form at this p.o.! read more

Staff at the post office location are actually nice. But it's very annoying that I have to go here so often because the package delivery person doesn't even bother to knock on the door. By far the WORST post office ever. I recently moved to Hawaii and during the holidays I sent out 15 packages to my friends and family. Only 2 boxes never reached their destination. They both went through the Southwark post office. One box was to my brother the other to my old job. Neither of them received an orange note saying there was a box for them at the post office. Southwark was my old post office in Philly and I was fully aware of their lack of competence. Because I knew how poorly managed the office was, I told my brother to check up with them even though he had no orange slip. He made many attempts to get the box from the post office, yet every time they told him there was no box for him. Yesterday, about 6 weeks after I sent the boxes, and 35 dollars later the boxes were sitting back on my doorstep in Hawaii. I hate you Southwark Post Office. read more

I went to pick up a package and the woman behind the counter couldn't find it. She asked, "How big is the box?" How would I know - I didn't mail it to myself. Went the first week of December to mail Christmas gifts, the clerk said, "This is a really bad time to be mailing packages." Um - it's not like you're providing a free service. I used to use the "stamps by mail" envelopes - until the time I didn't get my stamps. I took my cancelled check to the post office from Hell and explained the situation. I was told by the clerk - "that's impossible - we fill the orders the day that we get them." After rifiling through their stamp orders, they miraculously found my order slip and handed me a book of stamps. Three days later, I received another book of stamps in the mail. How is it that the post office on 4th and South are so nice and professional - and even if there's a line going out to the door - it actually MOVES! This post office is a disgrace. read more

I have been to this post office a number of times and these negative reviews are pretty accurate. The biggest drawback is the parking. It SUCKS. But, that's South Philly. Another issue is that Southwark PO, as in most every other PO, is usually understaffed when it comes to Customer Service (Windows). That being said, I just had a terrific experience with their Customer Service over the phone. I mistakenly had my Package sent to my home and wanted it re-routed. It sat in that very PO for 4 days but after 2 brief conversations, the Postal Clerk had gotten everything straightened out and it's on its way. read more

I love this PO! It's not the closest one to me, but I go out of my way to go there because the employees are the most helpful I've ever known in a PO. There are lots of bad reviews here for this PO, and that's a shame, because I've never had anything to complain about. Whenever I've gone, there have been at least 2 windows open, and only 2 to 3 people in line if that. I'm legally blind, so I need extra help with filling forms out, etc., as well as finding the right box for a shipment, and every time they've gone out of their way and been extremely friendly and polite. I think the bad reviews are old and perhaps they did have a bad experience, but I never have, and I encourage you to try this PO if you want a good PO experience. I dread dealing with this post office. Every time I get a slip that says I have a package to pick up I think really hard as to whether it is worth the trouble trying to get it. We had Christmas gifts lost by them and they could have cared less. I understand patience is a virtue but you need to be more than patient when dealing with this post office. It's a post office. Expect it to not be the best experience. This one is ok. The line gets pretty long, especially at the end of the day, but not longer than any other place. Generally, I've found everyone there to be helpful. Went one during the day and was in and out in no time. I've called twice to check that a package was there before I came and the guy who answered was very nice and helpful both times. And, most importantly, my package was in fact there. Just be advised they're closed on pretty much any holiday, so check the calendar before heading over. read more

I've been to this post office multiple times, seeing as all my packages are sent here if I miss a delivery. Every single visit here has been pure agony. Every single time there is a line almost out the door and ONE teller. According to my experience, be prepared to wait a half hour or more in line before you can even speak to someone. The atmosphere while you wait is also most unpleasant, the whole office is dirty, dank and depressing. I've lived in Philadelphia many years, often visiting this post office and there has never been an attempt to remodel or brighten this place up. Anyway, once you DO get to a teller, don't expect to be treated with any kind of respect. Tellers and managers are always rude and packages are constantly being lost. I've had tellers tell me they lost a package, only later to find out it was returned to sender before it was supposed to be. Holidays here are especially a nightmare, avoid at all costs and make sure you are home when your package is delivered!! read more

I'm appalled at the vitriol aimed at this location. Yes, it's frustrating to have to pick up here or just buy stamps as this post office is known for its long lines and wait times. There are no vending machines and intermittent ( and rather rudely abrupt) package pick up help from management when the service line is out the door. The manager is unpleasant and condescending. That said this post office also staffs two of the loveliest & friendliest clerks ( Susan and Kim) it's ever been my pleasure to encounter. I run an online business and am there at least twice a week dropping off packages or purchasing postage. I've witnessed customers with incredibly rude and aggressive attitudes when they try to find a lost package without pertinent info like a tracking number and the name of the shipper, or attempt to ship things like food wrapped in tissue paper.. and nothing else. Neither clerk has lost her cool that I've ever witnessed. I have also seen both Kim and Susan take great care to help with customer issues and questions, even when those queries aren't voiced in the most polite manner. They go out of their way to provide excellent service, the stars are for them. That 5th star is missing because the rest of the place is unfortunately sub-standard. read more

My mail is never delivered on time. i swear they dont sort through mail and get it delivered in a timely manner. if someone sends me a parcel, they dont even attempt to deliver it! They slip the pink slip in my mailbox so they dont have to bring me my box and I have to drive to them in south philly. Last week my paycheck from new york was lost, now it couldv'e been someone else's fault, but i doubt it!i had to have my agency cancel the check and fed-ex another check the following week! I was there at 3 pm around Christmas time, and the black lady was very rude to me. I wanted to show her my credit card bill on iphone that has my name and address on it, but she didn't want to look at it and said :" I am not talking to you go to talk the manager " .
