What USPS won't make you want to stab your own eyeball, but this is by far the worst one! I just moved to the neighborhood so I don't know what it used to be back on their glory days, if they had any, but there's always only one person working behind the counter and you know most government employees have to abide by the speed efficiency to sloth level, unless if they're SFMTA meter maids. I decided to open a mailbox with them and in 2 months having one, they lost my packages twice already. There's no accountability cause every person you talked to would just say 'Oh it's not me who worked that day' We showed on one of our tracking receipts who received/signed for the package and conveniently that person has retired but somehow their name was still in the system and being used. I understand maybe it's not specifically 'you' that lost my package but you happened to be the person I'm talking to and you're wearing the uniform that represents that government entity you're working for, so have some accountability and pride in what you do. It's frustrating when you lost your valuables and all they could say "Oh it's not me. It's not my fault. I don't know. Check your address." This branch is very much neglected and they just keep rotating people who work here. Most of them can't really help you with anything more than shipping your packages or selling stamps. No other services provided here. I don't even know why people still want to wait in line just to mail something. I'd recommend invest in a cheap printer and just print your label at home, or a couple blocks from there you can go to a mail and photo service on Haight and Masonic. They also have mailbox service. It might be a bit more expensive than the USPS but it's better managed and not having the constant fear of losing your packages is worth it! read more

I'm only writing this review, because through all of the frustration in having a PO Box at this location, and dealing with lost packages, incompetent employees, etc, Stephanie has been a God send at this location. If it wasn't for her, nothing would get done, nobody would help track down lost packages, nothing would be organized, and this Post Office would fall apart. All of the other employees at this location quite literally suck, they're unprofessional, unhelpful, and have no idea what they're doing, just terrible. Stephanie does above and beyond, and based off of my customer experience, I think she deserves some kind of recognition for being the glue of this office. My package is still circling somewhere within the USPS universe. It was supposed to be at this station but might be on a truck for redelivery. We'll see. What I can assure you is the staff at the Clayton post office is very efficient and pleasant. Crystal was particularly helpful. The line moved quickly, they did everything they could to pinpoint the whereabouts of a package my friend sent me. Especially with a wrench thrown into the works by Postmaster DeJoy, give the hardworking postal employees a break.Their workload hasn't decreased and they're facing a lot of pressure and little/no overtime to clear the backlog. I appreciate how they keep the mail moving. Logistically, the USPS is still an amazing service. read more

All post office's can be very hit or miss, depending on the day of week, time of day, and holidays. However, I've generally had good experiences at the Haight Ashbury location. Their space is very small, but they manage to get customers in and out with relative speed. They're good at diverting those who need to fill out forms, etc. to the side to keep the customers in the queue moving up to the counter. Additionally, when I've had issues where something wasn't able to delivered, they've been able to retrieve it from the back even without a pink slip, or, in an unfortunate case, tell me the package had already been sent back to Spain :( Also, pro-tip: most post office's usually have an area where you can drop-off pre-paid packages without waiting in line. This location's is on the right as you walk into their main area. read more

The African American gentleman working the counter at this location is by far the rudest customer service agent I have ever had the displeasure of working with. I attempted to pick up a package this afternoon that was authorized by the receive to be received by me as an "authorized representative". USPS guidelines state, whether online or via a representative on the phone, that such persons can pick up mail on someone's behalf as long as they bring their own ID and a signed pink slip from the missed delivery. Welp. Dude wasn't having it... wouldn't give me the mail, said it could only be held if the customer was paying extra (?) and that I need the customer to sign a copy of their ID with express written consent that I can pick up the package -- this is false. You do not need a copy of their ID, just yours and a signed "sorry we missed you slip." I tried to show him the guidelines online that states the above. He told me he "has worked here 20 years and doesn't need to read anything" and then refused to process the pickup. He then proceeded to laugh at me with another customer as I left the building. So now I have a package that I can't pick up because the guy working the front is too stubborn to admit he might have been mistaken about the guidelines. He was also super mean about it. BS like this is exactly why people hate the Post Office. Despite having 20 years of experience working at the USPS, I'm surprised that this gentleman is unaware the current policies pertaining to his place of employment. I can see how working the counter at USPS can burn you out but JFC is that guy is an asshole... That being said, I called USPS over the phone to see what they can do about the package. Honestly not a terrible USPS for those who don't come in expecting 5 star stellar service. The employees I've met are not rude but also not the most helpful. This is not a good neighborhood post office. First, be careful going here. Their scales are off. The lady (really rude) told me my box was over half a pound, but my work scale told me 5lbs. I work at a grocery store and all of our scales are calibrated every day. Those scales at the post office I bet have not been calibrated in a while and over-charging us. Also, only two people working per shift? What!? The line was wrapped around the corner and they couldn't get anyone else to help out. They argue with you there. Is it crazy that I would rather let a dozen people skip me in line then let the man that works there call me to the window? He's seriously the most unpleasant f-bombing jerk 100% of the time. I've probably been to this post office 150 times in the last 8 years I've lived in the neighborhood and it doesn't matter how nice I am to him he always has some rude condescending thing to say. Like even if I'm just picking up a package I'd rather him say absolutely nothing to me than say "you're almost late to pick this up, we would've shipped this back if you waited one more day. On top of being rude he also admits to not being quick or efficient with computer systems or what he calls "the internet" which is probably why he helps 1 person in the same time it helps anyone else help 3. Pretty much the worst Post Office I've ever visited. It is: - Small - Dirty - Without any type automated machine - not even a basic stamp machine But yes, the worst part is the slowness. I usually come here to send certified letters or pickup the occasional package that was missed. Even at 2 PM, there's a line, and only 2 counters open. The employees just don't seem too interested in keeping this moving along, and when you've got 3 people in front of you who are each mailing 25 letters to China, be prepared for a wait. Wouldn't be so bad if my cell phone worked inside, but AT&T service in this neighborhood is a joke, so here I am trying to play angry birds one-handed. The only reason I'm dropping the 2 stars vs. 1 is there's a small scale in the back. The first time I went in here the postal worker didn't know what country England was in and couldn't figure out the codes necessary to send something to London. You know, that little town that nobody would ever wanna ship to. Even after I said that England was in Great Britain, she just sat there on her computer for twenty minutes staring at the screen. It was like when a little kid is stalling so that you will do their homework for them. She was actually RELIEVED when I asked if I should just go to UPS or Fedex. This time the postal worker didn't know what happened to undelivered mail and said I should go to a bigger post office in SF where they might have someone who "knew stuff". So the guy that people below are complaining about is truly awful in a depressing way. He hates his job and doesn't know how to do it AT ALL to the point that other employees just intercept as he lectures customers about why they're not allowed to send packages and do other things that post offices definitely do. With that said, Crystal is an absolute delight. She's super quick and very patient, will explain all that you need and will make sure you get the task done. How on earth is the USPS still in business? Their customer service is horrific! This particular store is only open M-F 9-5:30 and Sat 11-4. These hours are not conducive for working adults. And every time I manage to get off work or rearrange my Saturday plans to go, the line is ridiculous because they only have two people working. Wow, people have high expectations for a post office. This is completely on par with other post offices I've been to. I've been using this one for about 3 years. Are there lines? Sure, guess what--you and everyone else who got off work to try to pick up your package before the office closes create lines. Are the people there "cool"? No. Who the ef cares if they're as "cool" as the people from the old independent post office. Get over your hipster need to be coddled by every employee from anywhere ever. Are they slow? Depends. Hence the average rating. I've had a couple small incidents of crappy service and a couple small incidents of fantastic amazingness. Everything averages out, though, over the long run. This place is average, there's no point in trekking elsewhere just to mail a package unless you know of some hidden gem where there's never a line. read more

I would like to give a shout-out to the mailpeople of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood: they are friendly, helpful, and timely! This review is otherwise not directed towards them. The people who work the counter at this office are SOOOO incredibly f*ing slow. If they were any slower, they would be going backwards. If they see there is a long line going out the door, they don't give a shit. They will move just as slow as before. If you're picking up a package, here's what they do: 1. Walk very slowly over to the package bin. 2. Leisurely paw about. 3. Find package. Contemplate package for like a full minute. 4. Walk back to the counter even slower. 5. Complete the transaction, and notice that there is a line going out the door. 6. Put up the "Next Window" sign, when they have only one other station open, and then go in the back for whatever reason. 7. Come out of the back 5 minutes later to peek and see if the line has gone away yet. If it hasn't, leave for a lunch break. What is the problem here? If I'm at work, and there's a line out the door, then I'm busting my ass to get everything done as fast as possible, consolidating the line into two lines, one for quick transactions and the other for complicated transactions, and generally moving about with a quickness! If I behaved at work the way they do at this post office, I wouldn't have a job for very long, I'll tell you what. read more

It's dirty, under-attended, busy, dirty, unprofessional, saturated with bitterness, probably has crabs, understocked, and will generally sell you stamps. But the stamps probably have crabs. If you take my 1 star and then subtract 5 more stars from it, you'd start to approach how I feel about this place. This is literally the worst business in San Francisco. There are never any free Priority supplies in stock, except for the small boxes meant to hold - what? VHS tapes? Those ones. Not useful. You have to wait in the interminable line to ask for these supplies. Speaking of the line, it moves SLOWLY. It's not always due to the employees - they are actually quite nice. Probably too nice. One of the dudes held a conversation with a COMPLETELY INSANE POSTAL PATRON for, like, 20 minutes yesterday. Most people who patronize this USPS are IN NEED OF PSYCHIATRIC CARE. They want to buy 33 1-cent stamps, but only if they are the George Washington ones. And bless these postal workers, they humor these insane people. It's also just kinda gross in here. Like, I don't really want to touch any of the surfaces. I avoid coming here for anything besides picking up packages. I would rather get leprosy on top of tuberculosis than come here. RE: Haight Ashbury post office. Here's a new one: I go to mail a package, and there is no line. I need the zip code, but forgot my glasses, so I couldn't read the zip code in the book. There are three clerks standing there with NO customers, but they all refuse to read the zip code for me, because "we don't do that". I have to go home and get my glasses. I was receiving a USPS door tag WHILE I was at home, 3 minutes before closing time a week ago. They didn't even try to ring the bell, just put the door tag and left. I was trying to track my package since a week, and I was even sent to different USPS post offices because of pure incompetency of the customer support. Finally I arrived to this office (the door tag also named this one), where they told me they just can't find my certified mail here. They admit, it should be here, but it's not here (again: it was a week later after they left the door tag - it's still not here?) They gave me a phone number of the Supervisor, "Vincent", to call this guy, he might deliver my mail even tonight. I was calling "Vincent" for 15 minutes from the USPS post office but no one answered. They gave me a few other numbers of Vincent, the Supervisor. 415 285 4659 (they gave this first - "Vincent") 415 285 4647 (USPS 180 Napoleon St., San Francisco, CA 94124 - by google) 415 285 4662 (USPS 554 Clayton St (their own number - they never answer either) 415 285 4646 - ? I was calling these numbers nonstop in the past 3 hours. No one is answering, it's just ringing in empty space. I was googling the numbers, they didn't say what these numbers are, just it's "Vincent"'s numbers. My previous redelivery requests were never happened. None of the USPS staff knows where is my certified, very important mail which should arrived a week ago already. It will be returned soon to the sender if they can't deliver it. I was asking if I can just drive to the place where Vincent is but they said it's some industrial area somewhere far away and they don't recommend it. Plus they admit they usually have a hard time to reach out people on these numbers. I just started to believe these are just fake numbers given to the customers to send them away from the office. My mail is in limbo, they couldn't deliver it, they don't know where it is, and the supervisor doesn't exists. Only use USPS if you really want to make a bad day (week) for someone. read more

I would honestly give this branch negative stars if I could. The customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. I filed a notice with USPS main line for a package to be held at this branch since I knew that I was going to be out of town during the pick-up deadline. The reason why I filed it with the main line was because this branch never answers their phone...of course. The main office doing its job, provided me with a filing/claim number confirming this notice was processed. When I arrived at this branch to pick up my package on the scheduled date, it was no where to be found and sent back to the sender. Naturally, I was outraged, but only because the workers at this branch refused to take my claim number to look up the notice. Allegedly, they never received the notice and tried to defer any sort of responsibility. I was told that I was lying, misinformed, and could call the manager, Vincent, to file my complaint. After filing the complaint against this branch, I received a phone call from Vincent who proceeded to curse at me and call me a liar. He called ME incompetent for filing the notice with the main office instead of their offices. After resolving nothing, he asked me to call the main office to rescind my complaint and hung up. Excuse me, but what kind of "manager" does that to his customers? One that should be fired, if you ask me. Anyway, I know that it's pretty useless to complain about the nation's mail delivery service since there's nothing that you can really do, but just try to avoid this branch if possible. read more

Too bad most reviews here seem to written in a huff, when something went wrong. I've been to this PO several times (more than 7, fewer than 15) over the last couple of years, and it's fine. You know, it's a post office. Yeah, it could be snazzier... or it could be a lot worse. I've never had any of the employees be rude or aloof; they've been pretty helpful and professional. Although the place closes at 5:30, they don't turn away people who are still in line, which I think is nice. So... there we are. I would never visit this place if I didn't have to, but when I have a package that the letter carrier won't leave, I have to come here. And wait in line. And wait some more. And be yelled at by someone who wandered in from the street--but wait, she actually works here and is trying to ask whether you have a package to pick up but you were ignoring her because she looks and sounds like she came off the street. There are a couple of employees here who are pretty nice. But there's one woman who asks all kinds of personal questions. This place has terrible workers. There's is no need to be so rude to customers. I mean really.. telling someone "don't come back here!" Because they didn't have their package labeled correctly? I literally probably send two packages a year. This time for my 4 year old niece's birthday present. He yelled at me for "not following the rules" because I went to the counter when it was my turn and asked what to do. He wasn't even serving me- he was in the stall next to ours and started yelling. Everyone in line was then making jokes about the him (African American bald male worker) at his aggression to customers. What a fool- he needs a different job which doesn't involve customer service . Just a small run down joint with friendly staff full of the usual suspects on Haight Street. No automated machines.
