The gate closest to the airfield and Mililani Tech park side closes around 9pm. So you'd have to enter the gate across Lyman. Other than that, it's a little more peaceful and laid back than the hustle and bustle and crowd on Schofield. There is a pre-school called Armed Services YMCA that you could put your child in, a community pool for Island Palm residents, a car selling lot, a small and quaint bowling alley, and a small PX. I believe the Navy housing is farther back behind Wiliwili. The park is well kept. I'd recommend this area of you're ever stationed here and there is an opening.

I've lived & worked 'on Post' here for 2 years. I LOVE our quiet lil neighborhood (and neighbors)…read moreWili Wili in the back near the horse stables (private memberships available.) I Remember when we first got stationed here my husband said to me Wheeler army airfield? Isn't that the first place to get hit before Pearl Harbor? Yes, yes it was. There's interesting historical signs about it On the main road by the big gray building and others in the pink Amelia Airhart hanger on the airfield. Many of the homes and hangers that got hit still have the bullet holes in them as historical landmarks. So we live here with respect and humility from the past & excitement about the future. This base is small but friendly & traffic isn't as bad as Schofield in my opinion. AVOID crossing between bases if you can in the morning. It will add an hour to your day. Wheeler has a wonderful new small bowling alley (only 4 lanes) with yummy food beer & free pool Thursday & Friday. Unfortunately due to sequestration they are not able to be open on other days At this time. It was built for the barracks next-door but tends to attract more of an older and family crowd. There are nondenominational Christian worship services at Wheeler Chapel 11 am Sunday's with Potlucks every first Sunday. Pagans meet in the church 1 Friday/mth although I hear it's basically a bunch of young gaming kids and probably not super religious. The Community Center behind the chapel has a pool, Small fitness center, and small movie theater you can reserve for parties. There are several great playgrounds all over the base. There is A barbershop, a bank, a delicious DFAC, shoppette, and a gym in and around the big gray building. The only gas station is on Schofield. All of the housing is pretty awesome in my opinion including the older historical WWII housing (except for poor Camp Stover in the back.) Make sure to make your way over to Schofield on the weekends for the KoleKole (sp?) Pass Hike. It's open to the public usually too. It's only .8 mi one way & doable with small kids & the views are phenomenal. I'm going to leave here with such fond memories! And those Mountain View's?! Breathtaking!! Historically Hawaiian Warriors trained on this plateau also (as they still do as part of the Hawaii National Guard.) Don't miss out on learning about the local Hawaiian history while you're here. I recommend the Shakka app if you're driving around the area. And while you're at it, stop at Zippy's and get some local food and donuts, it's kind of like a Hawaiian Denny's. Dole is only 2 Miles up the road for visiting family & tourists. We also make a great 'Gateway to the North Shore .'Last, all the helicopter & air traffic doesn't bother my family & we can't hear much in our house. Loving Hawaiian Army Aviation life at Wheeler Army Airfield!!

Three words: Huge. Roach. Infestation. I've NEVER seen so…read moremany roaches in my entire life. Had to do my own investigation & found out they've been crawling through the old cabinets in the kitchen. As I am writing this I'm literally sitting in the corner of our living room with my broom at 3 am, wondering where the hell that roach I spotted 10 minutes ago disappeared. Keep in mind this happens every. Single. Night.

I would absolutely, never in a million years recommend this housing to anyone I gave half a shit…read moreabout. My husband and I got stuck in an apartment styled house here because it was "all they had available", and let me tell you. I lived in a pretty gross and overpriced apartment in NYC, and this place is WORSE. I've never met a more incompetent group of employees as far as the community center and maintenance goes. They absolutely do not care about problems you face-for example, the roach infestation we've been dealing with since we moved in, and now the ant infestation as it's starting to get cooler outside. I also shouldn't fail to mention the mice that live in our cabinets because they chewed their way through the storage room wall, or the black mold that grows in our shower and air conditioners. I should also mention that I'm asthmatic and pregnant, and the upstairs neighbors chain smoke so much that it comes down through our windows and AC wall units so pungently that I can smell it on the carpet, my bed, my clothes. When I wrote to housing asking if we could be moved, I was told I'd need an extensive medical evaluation with years of medical history as proof of having asthma before they'd even consider it. This place is filthy, they charge $2,900 for a piece of shit two bedroom, one small bathroom and somehow get away with it. The gym is gross, small, and not air conditioned, the pool is open maybe three months out of the year despite year round warm weather, the shopette is a JOKE. There are constant break ins and thefts happening here. People get away with abusing their animals because animal control and the MP's don't give a rat's ass. Please, for the love of your sanity, do not waste your time or money on this shit hole. I will literally do everything in my power to e sure that no other unfortunate soul ends up in my shoes, because this has been the most god-awful living experience I've ever had in my life.

Synopsis: It is a clinic where you can get your TB shots and immunizations for infants, children,…read moreand Teenagers of 18 years and younger. The place is quite difficult to find, as there is no obvious sign. Inside is enclosed, but since it is an easy in-and-out situation, you will have no problems. Availability: The only thing that sucks about this place is the limited time. For TB it is only Mondays where they give you the test and a follow-up on Wednesdays 2-4 PM. Um..omg, the window of opportunity is soo small. For immunization it is worse. It is from 1-3 PM second and fourth Tuesday of the month. How can anyone get anything done???? However, as a state worker, I can understand as to why this is occurring. It is due to budget cuts...and further budget cuts that may or are occurring for the Department of Health. Environment: Can you spell G-H-E-T-T-O. It isn't very welcoming, however the chairs and some other things were donated by a church. That's nice! People: They are very nice. They invited my staff and I to a coffee hour, in which they displayed numerous local business and farmers' produce. It was god-a-licious good! :D Although, the staffing seemed to only be limited to two people. Parking: It can be difficult since it is shared with WIC, Public Health Nurses, and Welfare. Cost: Free

It's kind of a tricky place to find. Since I'm familiar with Wahiawa it wasn't hard for me, but if you're not familiar with the area it can be confusing since there are no visible signs of arrows of any kind. Parking is available in the lot, but how you enter the lot is tricky. You can enter from California Ave or you can enter from behind Wahiawa General Hospital (can't remember the name of this street) and this is where I ususally enter. There is more than enough parking in the private lot as well as on this street (it's not street parking but it's actual marked stalls) TB tests are administered every Monday between 2PM-4PM. You just bring your ID, fill out the form in front, and wait in line. Usually there is a group waiting right before 2PM but they are pretty quick to get you in and out. The staff is very friendly! The office itself is small. A small desk where they check you in, and a small area where they administer your shot (s). TB readings are done every Wednesday, again from 2PM-4PM. Just bring your ID again, wait in line, they'll peak at your forearm, and give you your card. It's very quick and easy, and best of all, it's FREE! I'm not familiar with the hours for other immunizations but you can view them on the Department of Health's website. Last year I needed a TB test but because of my work schedule I wasn't able to make it Monday OR Wednesday (only crappy thing is the limited hours), so if you're in need of a TB test, Access Medical Clinic does them for $30.

Tis the season for graduation parties......falalalala...lalalala…read more..... I attended yet another graduation party this past weekend at this venue. The Hawaii Okinawan Center is located in Waipio Gentry and is easily found by either traveling on Kam Highway or the H-2 Freeway. However, I would probably recommend a route via Kam Hwy for convenience reasons. The party I attended was in the Legacy II ballroom, of which the entrance faces the parking lot. I later discovered that the Legacy Ballroom is actually 1 huge ballroom, and it was divided into 2 separate areas on this evening as another party was taking place in the other half. Incidentally, the side where the other party was taking place was larger and had a stage as well. Although the portion of the ballroom where our party was held was much smaller, I liked the high ceilings so there was the illusion that the room was slightly big and grand. I believe there were about 18 tables (seating for 10) set up for the party, but since this section was smaller, there wasn't much room to have more tables set up if the need arose. Food and drinks were provided by A Catering Experience, which (from what I was told later that evening) is the catering division if Zippy's. The food served to guests at the party included Chinese chicken salad, assorted fruits, rice, noodles, fried chicken, roast pork, mahimahi, and adobo (which most of us thought it was sweet and sour pork). Besides water, fruit punch (very watery!), coffee, and tea was also provided. Lastly, the banquet staff was very gracious, polite, and kind. I was very impressed with the attentiveness of the staff that night, and their quality service contributed to a wonderful evening spent with friends and family. PARKING: FREE parking available in the HI Okinawa Center lot. First come first serve. Bottom Line: Clean venue. FREE and ample parking.
