I'm super picky about my cinnamon buns because I feel like most places drench it with that sticky white frost to balance out the dried out bread. This was hands down the best cinnamon bun I've ever had. It was moist, a nice punch of cinnamon hugged the sides of the swirl, and it was perfectly sticky. So happy they expanded their days open. It was hard getting there and with limited hours I would always seem to miss them. Wish they would stay open past 2pm one a week but am happy they have moved from a five day week. Shop is so cute and like some of their others stores had a number of artisanal items. Left with a loaf of italian bread and a bagel. The bagel was awesome complete with french butter I had at home. I was so happy I final got the chance to try a bagel. Based on its popularity, I was eager to try Utica Bread. One day I stopped in at around 1PM, and there were hardly any pastries left. Having learned my lesson, I arrived before 10AM on a second visit and was able to score an almond croissant. At $4.25, it was definitely on the higher end. I was disappointed to find that the almond croissant didn't have very much almond paste, and worse, it was not very laminated. Overall the dough texture was completely off as it was too soft and flaccid. Without sufficient frangipane and a somewhat tasteless dough, this was a bit of a chore to finish. Things have changed around here again. We stopped by recently for some brunch style eating. I had the chocolate croissant and my friend had the spinach. We also got some of their yummy quiche of the day which was tomato bacon and asiago. On the counter they were offering samples of their blueberry pie bars, which were delicious. They have a couple tables out front, but it was raining, so we took our stuff to Utica Coffee next door. Solid local bakery with what I assume is a ton of regulars. Go early for the best selection, but we have had luck in the two afternoons we've gone finding good options for us. We've fallen in love with the croissants, plain and chocolate, and the Utica Sourdough is fantastic. The olive loaf is great, and the baguettes are a bit overly crunchy but delicious. The service is brisk and I think they have an expectation that you can identify all of the (unmarked) loaves on the counters but when you ask they politely (and briskly) inform you of what they are lol. The croissants lasted a few days just fine and were great plain, as well as filled with scrambled eggs and cheese. Just had the most delicious hot cross buns in my life. They were still warm and soooo tasty. It's nice to see Baggs Square coming back to life. I would have liked to try the bread but I'm just passing through town. If I still lived in this area, I would return on a regular basis. Now I have another thing to add to my must get list in Utica. The others are tomato pie, greens, chicken riggi, half moons from Holland Farms, and of course kielbasa from the Polish store on Lenox Ave. Update- I did get a sour dough bread on my way out of town, and it is great. Very tangy just how I like my bread. However the hot cross buns were not as good on Monday morning as they were from the previous day. It seems that they make them on Sunday mornings so get there then for the warm buns, which are terrific. read more

I stopped by today and purchased a tomato pie, a slice of olive focaccia, whole wheat Italian and Rye Bread. Everything was amazing! The staff was super friendly and helpful. My favorite was the olive focaccia. I will order a full pie next time. The tomato pie is amazing, full of flavor. Love that they have healthier varieties like whole wheat Italian which I have not been able to find in the grocery store. Both the Italian are Rye Bread were fantastic! This is a great addition to downtown Utica. When visiting the area, I always make it a point to stop and pick up some treats like scones and fruit bars after getting coffee next door. Great concept -- I would really like to see Utica Bread thrive (for the owners of course, and Uticans, as well.) Having lived in Montreal, San Francisco, and L.A., I feel reasonably qualified to comment: I went this Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and was the only customer. I ordered 2 cups of steel cut oatmeal "to go" and 2 cups of coffee. The oatmeal can be ordered with additions, like raisins, nuts, brown sugar, etc. But they don't list this anywhere; so this takes more time to sort out between the staff and the customer. Since I was the only customer, I didn't find it to be a serious problem today, but imagining there may be lines in the future ... or someone who has difficulty hearing and relies on seeing a menu ... I also ordered a brioche with apricot jam. The order took some time to prepare; so before it was rung up, I added an almond croissant. 2 cups oatmeal, 2 cups coffee, a croissant and a toast, came up to $27 and change (and I couldn't feel good about adding a tip). I asked if I could have a container to carry the coffee back to my car, and was told they had none. I suggested that the server make a suggestion to the owner. For $27, and with the coffee likely being their most profitable item, I think they should accommodate the "take out" customers a little better. The server said that there was a coffee place just a couple doors down. I couldn't believe she said that. Why would you effectively tell a customer to go wait in another line? If you're going to serve coffee -- as you should in a bread place -- then serve it. And another flavor or 2 might be nice as well. (Other places do.) So I arrived home with coffee leaking out from the bag, not even really hot, a brioche that wasn't warm, and 2 VERY sweet oatmeals, which left no appetite for the croissant. I'm sorry, but for $27, and being the only customer, service really should have been a little faster (I think they had 4 cooks in the back). I really shouldn't be expected to go stand in another line to get coffee with a carrier. And I really won't do that when the snow comes. I think the owners are probably pretty good people, and I think with just a bit more finessing, they can have a really nice business, and a place where people look forward to going. read more

I came in with my family over the weekend as we have heard great things about their pretzels. We've had true Bavarian pretzels during our trips to Germany and were hoping to find a good substitute locally. Unfortunately, we learned that they don't make pretzels on Sundays so we will have to try them another day. I did come home with a croissant though and I can't believe how good it was. It's so hard to find a good croissant around here. They're usually stale tasting or way too heavy or buttery. These are almost perfect. Light and delicious, the way that are supposed to taste. This is not very good. People just rave about it because it's new to Utica. The reality is the bread is extremely dry and lacks taste. This seems to be a take on the French bakeries popping up in nyc and Boston. But the difference is those places can actually bake. Even a simple scone was dry, dry, dry. In the end, is there anything better than Utica? Perhaps making your own or going to Panera... Had multiple helpings of multiple types of breads and fancy food from Utica Bread at a friend's house party, and it was so very, very good we tried to stop by on the way home (closed, alas). Soudough, a multigrain, sandwich breads...all excellent. Obviously worth a bookmark and a stop. They also host local products in there retail store. Because the bread is natural with no preservatives it only last several days. This place is perfect. EXCEPT when I was there last month, they had their quiche on the counter without any cover. No sneeze guard/saliva guard/dust guard. I actually don't care but my friends whom I was with refused to order quiche because of this. They loved the other items they had but really wanted the quiche (especially after I raved).
