I recently reached out to them via Messenger, because I was in a situation where I could not find anyone to make a small cake for my son's graduation. I was also looking for specifically a vanilla whipped type of frosting. I had tried a few places, and no one could help me. Since moving to Utica a few months ago I've been sampling the many bakeries in the area, and while there are a lot of very good ones, Gingerbread Bake Shop is my favorite so far. The cinnamon buns (there is nothing better with a good cup of coffee) and Boston cream donuts (the perfect ratio of cream to donut to chocolate) are some of my favorites. The muffins are tasty, and you should grab a strawberry muffin if they're on offer: the strawberry flavor is especially intense! The holiday specialty items are great. I especially enjoyed the cheesecake cupcake at Valentine's Day. The staff is welcoming and efficient, ready to answer any questions. As noted in other reviews, it is cash-only and they do sell out early. Gingerbread Bake Shop is more than worth getting up a little early and making a trip to the ATM. read more

The donuts here are honestly the best I've ever tasted. The chocolate fingers actually taste like chocolate. Some places it's just sugar you taste but not here, the textured is soft and fresh and not dry or crumbly. I also tried the pumpkin chocolate chip loaf and it was SO moist and flavorful. The girls there are mostly young but very sweet and helpful. It's a quaint little place inside for coffee and pastries, not large but most people are taking things home . My Dad swears these are the best Half Moons in the Utica Area of the iconic half moon and I can't disagree. I was never a huge fan of the half moon as I don't like cake and to me they are cake cookies, however the ones from here are more fudgy like a brownie and I am here for it! Get here early in the day because this bakery is no secret and gets picked over quickly! There is small seating inside and coffee, but most people come for take out. I don't think you can go wrong with anything but the danish, apple rolls, and cinnamon rolls are favorites besides the half moons. Apple items are truly their strong point! Gingerbread bake shop is the best bakery in Oneida County. They have the best cakes, icing, and half moons. We connected with Jaime to get a cake baked for our wedding. It came out beautiful! We went with layers of raspberry and lemon cake with raspberry cream and buttercream icing. It was absolutely delicious. They don't use artificial coloring which is a plus! We ordered a cake from here for an event. They never warned us that they were cash only even though we spoke to them multiple times by phone. When we went to pick it up, we unfortunately did not have enough cash on us at the time of pickup and were in a hurry to get to our event and offered more than half the amount of the cake and said we would come back to pay the rest. The person taking our order was rude and flat out refused. When we asked to speak the manager explaining our situation, she swore at us using the f*!* word. Learn to be human beings first before owning a business. We will never be coming back to this store and we want every customer to know about what disgusting people work at this store. I pay these guys a visit every time I come home to the Utica area. The shop is absolutely brimming with cookies, cakes, pies, and other assorted pastries--all of which are equally tempting. ;-) There's a small sitting area inside, where you can enjoy your coffee and baked goods. I often see folks relaxing in there, reading the newspaper. Their customer service is top notch! I special ordered cupcakes for a bridal shower last year and they turned out fabulous. My family and I have also ordered their regular cakes for birthdays and have never had any issues. 5 stars! read more

Hands down the best Halfmoon cookies since Hemstroughts went out of business. They are definitely a close second, and so much better than any other bakeries around! The store was kind of dimly lit inside, and the selection was limited, but I arrived about 15 minutes before closing time on this visit. I don't fault them for that at all. Their halfmoons have travelled with me to local friends now living out of town and are always well received. It's 25 miles each way for me, but well worth it! read more

This little bake shop is by far the BEST!!! And the Half Moon cookies..... WIN!! These are the best version of our favorite cookie in all of this Mohawk Valley. They are serious contenders for the NYC versions. Every single item they sell is delicious! The ONLY down side.... they sell out so quickly, you have to get there early enough to enjoy. They are gracious, kind, attentive and patient (as people struggle to decide.... and it is hard to decide). Truly a treasure. Mmmmmm, mmmmm! Never actually been to this place BUT whenever we are in town my husband's grandma gets a ton of stuff from here. Up until a few years ago I had no idea what a half moon was - I thought all black and white cookies were those nasty dry lemon flavored black and white iced cookies you get down in NYC. I used to go to Gingerbread bakery often. They seemed to have similar or the same recipes as the original Hemstroughts Bakery for many of their donuts. IMO Hemstroughts was the best in the area. So I'd go to Gingerbread since Hemstroughts was gone. Gingerbread apple pie was like a fresh pie. Not canned apples. Chocolate fingers and spotlights had that same ever so slightly crispy outside. Then it changed. Recipes seemed different. Sometimes the chocolate frosting is delicious and sometimes it tastes like bandaids. The most frustrating part was I'd go in there early in the morning and they'd already be sold out of most donuts and other products. Prices got ridiculous and I stopped going. I got tired of going there to find empty shelves in the morning. I stopped by this Saturday for the first time in years. Same old thing. It was barely 10 am and the donut selection was down to two kinds and half moons. Come on! I told the girl I was disappointed and told her what I was looking for. She went in the back and said she could do more fingers. I took two. $1.40 each. So if they had some in the back that could be frosted, why aren't they out in the floor? I'll never understand how this place stays in business when they never have inventory! I give up. It's a waste of my valuable time. It's a shame because it used to be a great bakery. read more

100% agree with prior review on the Halfmoon cookies. I grew up in the Utica area and grew up on Hemstrought's halfmoon cookies. I now live in Syracuse and pre-order them from Gingerbread bakery every time that I come into town. They are a must have. Gingerbread's halfmoon cookies are a must try. Once you have one you'll be hooked for life. My kids and I are hooked as well as my brother-in-law who requests some at every holiday that he knows we will be traveling to Utica, NY area. read more

I've fallen in love with raspberry pinwheels - a cookie that reminds me a little of shortbread, with raspberry filling. They will also make these with chocolate chips mixed in with the raspberry and dust confectioner sugar on top. So good! They don't carry these as an everyday, but you can place an order (I think 2 days ahead is their request). Excellent half-moons - these taste very similar to Hemstrought's original recipe that I enjoyed as a kid. They do make the original version (chocolate cake base with fluffy white and decadent chocolate icing for each 1/2), plus decorate for different holidays, etc. Half-moons are available everyday they are open. Jamie, the owners daughter went above and beyond to solve a difficult situation. Recently my sister and I ordered 5 dozen half moons and drove 200 miles to pick them up. When we arrived, we were told there was an error and no half moons were set aside for us. Understanding our disappointment Jamie immediately got her brother, the baker to come in and make the half moons for us to take back to Connecticut. I went in near the end of the day so there wasn't a large selection, but I got a half moon pie (as I'm new to NY and saw the rave reviews) as well as a few cupcakes. I will say that everything was really moist, which was great. But overall the cupcakes were very simple, so simple that I have made ones at home that were better. If I'm going to pay for a cupcake I want it to be something that I can't replicate. The half moon pie I'm sure was good (seems comparable to others I've tried) but I'm just not a fan (must be because I'm not from here).
