Surprisingly awful service & experience today. The person helping us seemed to be having a bad day. He didn't seem able to hear us well. He scooped up our pleco with his fingers! There was a large dead fish in at least one tank. I had planned to buy several more fish, but we got out of there as fast as we could. I would like to support this local pet shop. They've been a good place in the past, but I haven't been there in a while. Will not be going back. read more

The employee Rebecca was so knowledgeable and took the time to answer all our questions and then some she is a asset for sure to your company and I plan on returning and hoping she is working because she genuinely cares about the customers and the animals and I got that based on one meeting with her. My son bought 2 large rats from the Cutlerville location. Within the first month 1 rat suddenly died. Had we done our homework a little better beforehand we would have known he wasn't healthy to begin with. read more

Purchased four additional fish to add to my current group of five in the tank that we've had for over a year. Before they even made it in my tank, one was dead in the bag while I floated the bag for acclimation(see picture). Then, two more died that night , and another the following morning. Got replacement fish and they all ended up dying within the first 12 hr period , and four of our original fish didn't make it after introducing the new neon tetras either. When I called them, they said their fish were doing fine and that they do not guarantee the replacement fish so I was out of luck. (Not that I wanted to deal with the hassle of getting more duds and ruining our tank anyways.) They tried to blame it on nitrates in our water. I would be more understanding with having at least half of them survive , but for all of them to die and almost all of our original fish too?!? It's not a coincidence... they did not die from stress during the transfer. Something was wrong with them. We ended up with one survivor from our original group and we had to get more because they are schooling fish. Ended up going to pet smart because why pay over $1 more for each fish when the quality is the same... I thought VIPets take better care of their fish.... I was WRONG. At the very least own up to it and make it right. Don't try to blame us for having bad quality water .... I DO NOT RECOMMEND! I woke up in the morning with 8 happy Fish , 7 from pet smart... still alive (one that was originally in our tank also still alive). read more

I was a bit disappointed, their shelves were not very well stocked. They mislabeled gerbils for Lionhead Rabbits. The dogs, although cute, smelled aweful making the whole store reek. The fish selection looked nice. They seem to have a lot of exotic choices in fish. The tortoise was cool. It didn't feel like the store was well kept. read more

This is my favorite pet store. I loved going there when I was a little kid to look at the fish an all the animals they had. I've been going there for years. Today May 12th I bought a half moon Betta fish and the lady was awesome. I already have 3 other Betta fish in their own 5 gallon tanks. An even tho she didn't know that she asked if I needed help setting Up a new tank what to get ext. she was really cool. I named my new Betta Dante. He's in great health you can tell they take good care of the fish there which I really appreciate. read more

Don't come here. I just recently lost my pet bird and finally was ready for another one, my family and I went in to find a new one and we fell in love with this beautiful ring neck dove. It was in a cage, so I went up front (there were two guys working). I asked the older of the two if we could take a bird out. Without asking if we found one we wanted to purchase, without asking what type the bird was, nothing. He just looked at me and told me he couldn't because "it wasn't good for their hearts", like the bird would die of a heart attack if it was cuddled. I was dumbfounded. We looked around at the fish for the kids and left to go to Casa de la Parrot instead. I told the owner there and she laughed and was visibly confused. Especially because at Casa de la Parrot they have free roaming birds and you can hold any of their birds if you ask and they are so so welcoming there. Definitely recommend Casa de la Parrot. read more

Very disappointed. I got several fish a few days ago and a couple of them where plecos 25 dollars each for my 75 gallon. After a couple hours one of them died. After I checked the return receipt I also notice I was charged for another fish. I went in the next day and got my replacement fish plus the fish I was charged extra for. 7 days later the other pleco died. Their return policy doesn't allow you to get your money back only replacement fish after a few days. It's always very unclean and has a bad smell. Never going to buy fish from there again at least from that location. I've been to the Plainfield one and it's much nicer. The staff also seem more welcoming. read more

I enjoy coming to this VIPets to shop in the fish room. They have a large variety of fresh, and saltwater. One thing I especially like is that they purchase fish from local breeders too. Sometimes you can find something really unique this way. The selection of foods, medications, filters, and lighting makes this store my go to for all my fish needs. I'm really disappointed in this place. Less than a month ago I made a fateful trip to buy neon tetras and flying foxes that would eventually destroy my peaceful little fish habitat. Within 3 days all but one tetra was dead. Since I live over an hour away I called and they said I didn't need to save the fish to just come in and let them know I spoke with her. 2 weeks later I came back, at this point in addition to the tetras dying, my favorite molly died as did my two male fancy guppies, since this store's fish were the first I've introduced in months I asked the person when I got there if any of the fish they gave me could have been sick, and when I was there I saw several sick fish. In fact, when it came to getting my replacement fish I originally wanted honey gouramis, but I noticed they were swimming erratically and pointed it out to them. They said "oh no, they have ich and covered up the lights and dumped what looked to be methylene blue in. Several other tanks were also "blacked out." Since my tank had been grossly depleted I still ended up getting a female dwarf gourami. Later that night, now that I had finally seen ich in person I noticed my red wagtail platy had it. The next day I rushed to The best store in Lansing for fish and the owner helped me pick out items to try to save my remaining fish. I still lost my platy, the flying foxes, and the dwarf gourami. I am left with my otocinclus a blue tuxedo platy, one guppy, and a few of my favorite Molly's 6 month old fry. It wiped everything else out. Also I was told after the first replacement you don't get additional otherwise they'd keep on giving away fish, that should have served as a warning to me right there. Moral of this story, it appears that many of their fish are sick and can destroy your tank. Granted, I'm still a new aquarist, and I now blame myself for not quarantining new fish for a couple of weeks prior to introducing them into my main tank, I only learned to do that because of this terrible experience. Unfortunately, I've had a terrible experience with this pet store. I went and visited for the 1st time on 5/2/2020. I spoke with Rebecca who told me she does the reptile ordering and would be placing an order that Monday. I called her Monday AM asking for a specific tortoise and a price. She stated she would order it and it would arrive on 5/7. On 5/7 I called to see if it was there and she reported she hadn't ordered it (forgot or didn't have time was the impression). We asked again to order the tortoise and she ensured me it would be on the next shipment. We called earlier this week and she quoted us $250 for a specific breed and said it would be in Thursday 5/14. On Thursday we called again and she said it would be there on 5/15 and she would call us. On 5/15 we called and they stated they didn't receive the tortoise. After explaining that I was expecting it they stated it was on the counter and was $399. When I asked for Rebecca they said a he was leaving for the day and was unavailable. When I asked to speak to a manager she apologized 1 time and offered me 10% off and would not let me speak with an owner or higher up. We will be going elsewhere. I absolutely love this store. The "younger" kids who work there (I simply mean kids in their 20s) are not like the typical 20 year old workers you see in other stores. They care about the pets and their jobs. They are knowledgeable and aren't afraid to find help from other store employees if they don't know the answer. I felt like they truly cared about helping us. I also appreciate the large variety of animals they have. We walked into the store 15 minutes before they closed (we live over an hour away and ran into construction on 131). And they didn't act like we were keeping them from trying to get out of work. If I ever plan on getting another pet, this will be the first place I look. read more

Poor treatment of animals. Poop in box where they keep the dogs. No toys for any of the animals. The kittens were lathargic and both had very pink and sore looking eyes. Large rats were kept in a very small cage where they could hardly move. Ive been in a number of times and have taken the very dirty water that the puppies had to give the puppies clean water. No bed for the kittens displayed. I am calling a few animal rights groups to do more to see this gets changed. I have tried to work with the staff there but they either have no interest or are somewhat to very defensive of their practices. read more

Very knowledgeable! I got my Columbian Ornate Wood Turtle from them in 2014 and they were very helpful. Have been back many times since then and have given very helpful answers to every question I asked, and if they didn't know they found the answer out for me before I left. They want their animals to go to the best homes and will help you make the best choice, even at the cost of them selling a lower priced item.
