Fantastic assortment of species, equipment, & knowledge. (5 ) For over 7yrs we have been going here and enjoyed the atmosphere, education, & personal attention our son got from the owner & "some" staff. As he had a 70g fresh water & 30g saltwater (5 ) he would spend every penny he had & beg us to take him weekly He recently took his 3yr clown fish in hopes to sell it back - as he has done with a few of his other previously purchased fish from BF. The young person offered him $5 he bought the fish for $8 and it's tripled in size.. hands down bigger than any clown fish in the store (1 ) He told them that was insulting - as would I & asked to speak to the mgr - the kid said, I am & all I'm giving you is $5 (1 ) Needless to say, Nemo was happily donated to our family chiropractor. Customer service is not good. I used to spend a lot of time (and money) in this store and the workers were always extremely knowledgeable and helpful in every way. I specifically remember the names of two, Shawn and Taylor. You could tell they loved what they did and they were great with customers. I just called back and spoke to the current manager Patty. She was very rude and snippy. Not a people person by any means. Poor customer service. I have spent thousands of dollars at Blue Fish so to be treated like such an annoyance and to be dismissed in such a way is a shame. read more

This place is the largest locally owned fish store I have ever been to! Huge selection of fish, plants, decor, many kinds of their own store-made food! Easily spent an hour+ there. They do have a specific person for each department, so you might have to ask "Who's the fish person?" But everyone is very very helpful. They have a wide selection of uncommon aquarium plants which is great, but while their fish selection is vast, they don't have a lot of rare species. They still have many more fish than a Petsmart, petco, etc though! An amazing place. My only negative is their male bettas are kept in small unfiltered bowls; their female bettas are all in beautifully planted tanks, so that was better than most. Definitely check it out!!! read more

I just received my online order from Blue Fish Aquarium and had to tell everyone how pleased I was. I only live 10 miles away, but don't drive, so it's not always convenient. After placing my online order within 2 hours I was notified not only that the order was received, but I got a notice from Fed Ex that it was shipped and then I got it the next day. We recently restarted an old aquarium up with tropical fish and Blue Fish has helped a lot. Their fish are healthy. Our aquarium is doing great. I have even found some great pet supplies in the other half of the store. We have only lost one Molly we got from there, and it was probably our fault somehow. Every other fish and plant is doing great. The staff is so friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Great store! read more

I had been kicking around the idea of adopting a snake for a while, but honestly had no idea where to start. Blue Fish Aquarium was recommended by a friend, so we stopped in just to test the waters and see if a snake would be a good fit for me. Colton helped us out, and I honestly couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. We came at him with countless questions, and he answered each and every one of them honestly and confidently. He was extremely knowledgeable, and he really cares about the animals he's working with. For example, while handling one of the snakes, he pointed out how it's tail was shaking, meaning the snake was feeling stressed out by us, and opted to put it back in its enclosure rather than continue handling it. That sort of care and attention to detail is exactly the sort of thing that makes me confident that this is one the best places in Grand Rapids to get fish, reptiles, and insects. Not once did I feel like Colton was trying to upsell me or push me in any particular direction, he just really wanted what was best for the animals he was working with. We have had a large saltwater tank for over 5 years. When we first started the hobby, we bought from different fish stores and kept running into problems. Back when our tank was struggling, the knowledge and support from staff at Blue Fish Aquarium helped us correct issues with our tank. A special shout out to Jeff & Sean, who provided service and support that went beyond our expectations. My daughter and I came in to look around and but a fish 45 minuets we toured the place and no one acknowledged us. We even had to maneuver around a group of three employees who were gossiping about shoptalk we had to literally squeeze pass them we walk tot the aquarium that had our fish that we wanted to purchase we stood there for a few minutes after the third sales person walked right past us without acknowledging us we left as soon as my hand hit the door knob somebody out from the back yelled have a good night. read more

LOTS of fish and many cool reptiles to look at. Lots of supplies too. My only complaint is that they always seem to be low on frozen tats which I need for my snakes and his is the cheapest place around to get them. I can get a rat for 2$ each instead of the outrageous 6$ each at pet smart. Amazing prices but low stock. I think they're also understaffed. Today was my first visit to Blue Fish Aquarium and I don't think I'll be back to any of the other local big box stores for my fish needs anymore. I was just over the moon about their wide selection of live fish and reptiles. Some items are a little on the pricier side, but I think you get what you pay for here. The aquarists all seem very knowledgeable and passionate about the hobby. I'm also very appreciative of the measures taken for shopping during the pandemic. It makes me feel safer knowing masks are required and they're strictly limiting shoppers as well. Can't wait to come back! read more

Noticed the average review is only 3. Doesn't surprise me. I have been a long time customer of Blue Fish for my saltwater needs. This means I spend a ton of money there as salt water aquariums are high maintenance. Now, they were holding a fish for me that I want to buy but my tank required a water change. I said I would actually buy the fish but I wanted them to hold it for a few more days until my tank water change settled down. The employee was quite adamant and rigid about the policy of not holding the fish for a few more days. I understand as a business that one needs policies. But I have spent a fortune in that place on supplies, filters, fish, salt water, and the list goes on and on ... Another time, Chris, the owner snapped at me for having my 5 gallon water blocking a customers path. WTH man... a Jeff Bezo they are not. I also have a policy. Don't waste your time and money. Most of the staff are poorly trained and know nothing of the area they are working in. If you like standing around for ten plus minutes while they try to find someone who can answer your questions this is the place for you. The items we made the mistake of buying from here carried eggs from horned snails so now my tank is infested and of course they denied they gave them to me when everything in my tank was from them. The show tanks are great but none of the fish are for sell, they direct you the the back tanks that are dirty and Ick infected, they have so lost touch, won't be back. Check out Buffalo Coral Reef, in Buffalo, great clean tanks and a owner that cares. When was the last time you went to a reef shop that the owner emailed a week later to see how your fish was doing. read more

I live in Lansing and have the benefit of getting fish from my very large and nice local pet store Pruess Pets, but expected a similar level of competency from a business that models our local pet store closely. What I find is when it comes to freshwater aquatic plants their prices are high the portion sizes are ridiculous and most of the cool stuff is not for sale even though staff tell you they carry most of the plants found in the display tanks. The people in the freshwater area in general act glazed over and clueless. I've had good experiences with their reptile department but considering I specialize in high tech tanks and cool aquatic plants this repeat experience has led me to decide to not even bother. A couple of months ago I went there because I've recently taken up the hobby. Being a newbie I was having terrible luck getting fish by me to live at the chain Pet Supplies Plus and despite having perfect readings on my tank, 75% of their fish were dying. There are no LFS in my area at all that I know of and I really do think their is a lot to be said for small businesses! I came in with my very energetic and noisy child in a flare of my chronic illness from the heat so in a wheelchair, and still very green about whether or not I was responsible for the death of my fish. There are so many tanks to look at so it was overwhelming. It was moderately busy but several people offered their assistance, and they all seemed very kind. Finally I made it to the back of the store, I hadn't seen any fish that I fell in love with in the front, they were nice, but many were small, which I later found out was because of their trade in options. So finally I see these beautiful platies in the back. Their coloring was so vivid and they looked so healthy but I saw an x on the tank. After finding out I had reached a quarantined area I was so disappointed. They told me when I could come back for them, but I explained to them that I had made a pretty far trip to come see them. Then, they offered to sell them but without their warranty, and despite my poor luck, I asked them if they truly believed these fish would pass the quarantine period to which two employees said yes. These two beautiful platies are thriving in my tank and I'm so glad I took a chance on them. I also bought a beautiful and amazingly priced piece of driftwood for my clown pleco and it has also been a wonderful addition to my tank! Now I just need a bigger tank so I can buy out their store! Definitely THE place to go if you want to turn your hobby into an addiction. read more

I recently purchased 3 cardinal tetras and a black skirt tetra and paid $28.00 for a handful of very common fish. I was willing to pay this price because I felt that Blue Fish Aquariums stock would be healthier than Meijer's or one of the big name pet stores, how ever within a week my healthy home aquarium was thoroughly under attack by more than one infectious agent. I compared my water to their water and my quality was better if not equal to theirs, and I didn't add their water to my tank, leading me to believe that their stock was already infected. I personally won't be shopping at Blue Fish Aquarium again, the safe guards that this establishment claims to utilize apparently are no greater guarantee of success than those employed at less expensive pet stores and supermarkets. If buying aquarium stock is going to be this much of a crapshoot I'd rather minimize my initial investment and save that money to buy treatment for my aquarium as the need arises. I'am leaving them one star because the fish were alive when I purchased them and because I'm a nice person. read more

Blue fish is in the market of selling fish not helping you. first off,Ben told me wrong information many times just to get a sale, for just ONE example he even went so far as to get an attitude with me when he sold me a sick shark that died in 40 hours of bringing it home. He told me to "deal with it" and did nothing for me. Bad service, unhealthy fish, high prices, clean tanks. DONT get blue fished like me. Go to Pruess pets in lancing its worth the drive, it's the best pet shop Michigan, it is 5 times the size with 5 times the selection. this is one of the better fish stores in the area. prices can be on the high side but they do have a lot of stuff and do have knowledgeable staff. tanks are not always the cleanest but i don't usually see dead fish in their tanks.. When you walk in just be prepared to search out the employees for some help, they will walk right by looking at you and still not ask if they can help you get something. Everything you can pick up here you can find online for at least 25% cheaper, and while the few employees that actually have some knowledge are useful you can find way more information on the internet in half the time. read more
