I had just got back from work and I was to tired to go change. Plus no one else has a problem with other people coming in to work out with jeans. What does he care? Not only that, another time he was very bothered with me when I asked him to look me up with my phone number. He rudely said "Next time make sure you have your keychain or app up." No other staff seems to have any problems but him. Everyone else has always been so welcoming and kind. Today, just as I walked in, my app happened to be updating, he looked at me with a rude look and said. " Let me just look you up with your phone number" I told him the number and he said "what?" He didn't hear the last two numbers and I repeated it to him. At the end of my workout I was trying to use the massaging chairs and he stood there sitting down with his phone literally not bothering at all. After, 3 minutes I said "hello" I literally startled him. Wow! What service, he makes me feel very unwelcomed. I will be reconsidering my membership in this place, sadly all because of this lame dude.

Since returning from uni, I decided to look for some studios in my local area (SY Valley) and found Awaken! When I was checking out their Instagram, I really dug the vibes and message shared by the owner. I happened to notice that an Intro to Kickboxing class was being hosted in the coming week and decided to attend! Located next to an old theater, there's lots of parking for the studio. I had seen that the studio was a no shoes policy so I entered, then took off my shoes before walking onto the mat. I got to meet the owner Bridget and she gave a spiel about Awaken and its mission! During the class we were taught some basic kicks and punches that would come up during a regular class at Awaken. She also took time to explain the various types of classes that were offered at the studio. It was a very cool and fun environment that definitely encouraged me to come back. Ever since this class, I purchased a class pack and have been coming back every week! I would become a member but am currently in the midst of transitioning out of university and don't quite have the funds to support a membership at the moment. Nonetheless, I've enjoyed all of my classes I've taken and miss it when I don't go back for a bit. Anyone thinking about checking Awaken out -- go for it! You won't regret it. We were welcomed into the box by owner Darren Savella as if we were family or ohana. We even met his wife, daughter & parents. Had a great WOD and got great tips from coach Vic. In addition to training tips, he recommended a stop to see the elephant seals in San Simeon (which we did & loved!). We really enjoyed the positive vibes of friendly members, the community feeling of CF Ohana, and all the cool Ohana gear. Got shirts & socks as a souvenir. It was a bonus to see Darren do 15.3 with a cheering section of family, members & coaches.

All that said, there is no pool or water exercise capability there; you have to pay a separate fee to the City of Lompoc to access the aquatic center, which is literally right behind the Y, and it is expensive with limited adult access in the exercise pool because it is primarily geared towards children and families. Additionally, the Y itself is at least 95% geared towards children and families, with adults and seniors treated to crumbs and as an afterthought. Not very welcoming at all if you aren't a family with young children. Lastly, the hours are not great for those on non-traditional schedules, and the membership fee is quite expensive. Sad, because my entire family has been a Y family since my brother and I were kids, and there was always plenty of access to things and activities, classes, functions AND a pool at other YMCAs. Just not this one. Again, great for families and little kids and people looking for what amounts to a daycare center and kids camp. Not so great for everybody else.
