Picked up some cheeses and shortbread cookies. Valbella had an outstanding assortment of gourmet foods to please even the pickiest pallet. We enjoyed a bowl of their soup of the day - carrot ginger, and we are STILL thinking about it! Taking out onto the open air patio was definitely the move although there was some limited seating inside. Service was professional, prompt, and welcoming. We enjoyed the scents arriving from their smoker as we sipped our soup. read more

Super cute artisanal deli with a wide selection of raw, frozen, and ready to eat food. The staff was friendly and they heat/toast your sandwich for you which I always appreciate. Food itself could be better, as for the coffee, but I think it was pretty good for what it was. read more

I have had Valbella on my wish list for a couple of years, as we have made a few attempts to get to the Canadian Rockies. We finally got to Canmore, and this is a great place to pick up a picnic lunch, or a charcuterie & fromage platter for entertaining. We selected smoked, wafer-thin bison slices, some of the smoked meat sticks, a schnitzel sandwich in ciabatta bread, and a strawberry-rhubarb pastry. Although we didn't get any cheeses, I noticed Morbier (a French cheese with a layer of edible ash in the middle) among the choices, which for me is the gold standard of a good cheese selection. It was all delicious!!! The meats were so good, and neither the smoke nor salt was overpowering. The schnitzel was tender, and the bread very fresh. But the biggest surprise was the pastry...so flaky, fruity and not overpoweringly sweet. It was the best pastry I have ever had...and I search out bakeries wherever we travel! How can a meat shop have such fabulous pastries?! I may never eat another pastry, because none will measure up :-) I wish we had.been able to take a meat pie or some confit duck with us. The scenery of this region is so spectacular, and with food this good, maybe we will be back! read more

I used to enjoy shopping at Valbella and overall, I think they do a pretty good job. Their wide selection of meat products is by far the best in town. However, I find some of their bakery products rather tasteless and overpriced. Items such as their pies are very small and too expensive for what you get. The staff have always been helpful and courteous but at times seem to be distracted from customer service. It may not be their fault as just too busy or new. I enjoy their schnitzel sandwich and feel there is real value there. The decor and cleanliness are always top notch. Overall, a worthwhile experience. read more

I tried their Beef Bacon for the first, and last, time. This product is 14 percent sugar by weight and it tough like leather. I tried to make a toasted bacon and tomato sandwich using a rye with a good density to it. The sandwich fell apart because I could not get my teeth into the bacon. It had a sweet chemically taste rather than caramelized beef. Cold, grilled, or broiled, nothing can tenderize this loser. Valbella has some excellent products but this is not one of them. It is one of the worst beef bacons I have ever tried, tough, chewy, and no beef flavour. They should take the word "gourmet" off of this particular offering. read more

You want some meat they got it and it's sooooo fine. We picked up bison and lamb skewers. Tossed on the Barbecue and life is good. Also picked up some duck liver pate that was über fine. read more

This family owned operation is certainly a staple for locals and one of the top purveyors to local resorts and restaurants in the area. The deli...truly a carnivores dream is just one part of the business, which has grown over decades into a 25,000 sq. foot facility. That explains their 100+ housemade/house-cured products! You'll find everything from dry cured meats to bison, lamb, sausage, smoked salmon and house specialties like Bundnerfleisch (air dried meat) and Smoked buffalo. I love that the European tradition lives on in the middle of the Canadian Rockies while honoring Alberta made products. I wish we had a Valbella in Tucson, Arizona. Valbella in Canmore has been around since 1978 developing eventually into a 25,000 sq. ft. plant! In the European tradition of making meat marvelously mmmm, they have sausages, hams, air-dried meats....Oh let's face it. They have every meat you could possibly want. Lamb curry sausage. Cold smoked salmon. Garlic honey beef jerkey. Maple pepper ham. Chicken apple sausage. Wild boar pate. Kolbassa burgers. Yes, and even haggis. I didn't mention the other 130 items they offer. I first heard of Valbella by purchasing their procuitto at Sunterra and this winter my parents got one of their turduckins for a dinner. So after tasting such delicious products we decided to stop in on our way through Canmore. And boy am I ever glad we did. They have a great selection of fresh meats, sausages, and also a great selection of frozen options including bison steaks, duck, ground turkey, and amazing savory pies. I opted for a couple individual pies, including the shepherds pie, chicken pot pie, and a curry vegetable pie. All of which were simply delicious! My family also picked up some frozen and fresh meats and since we still had at least 4 hours drive the owner was awesome and found us a box and wrapped everything in newspaper to keep it frozen for us. He also comped my mom her cup of coffee which was so kind. The place is small but clean and with all the amazing products I would definitely stop here again but this time I will make sure to bring a cooler so I can really stock up! read more

Valbella should be ashamed of themselves in regards their pies. They used to be huge, delicious and 1/2 the price they are now. Walked in the other day and they are apparently getting them from some other supplier. They are 1/2 the size and DOUBLE THE PRICE! $25.00 for a small insignificant pie. They're not even good. Crust is hard and dense and the same goes for the filling. Yuck! I used to recommend the pies from Valbella to my friends. Now I have to ensure I tell them all not to bother. read more

Having Valbella as a destination gets us to the mountains to enjoy the great fall weather we are having. On our most recent trip an out of town visitor was introduced to all that makes Valbella such an important stop in our travels west. There are numerous dry cured meets with the buffalo being my favourite and another family member landjaeger. Other specialties include their spatzlea which a great adder to fall and winter meals when you are looking for a change up from potatoes or pasta. Valbella can also help if you are looking for a 'speed feed' without compromising health - grab a mini baguette and some pepperoni and assemble your own tailgate sandwich right on the spot. Access is good with lots of on site parking outside the store. read more

This place deserves five stars - they treated our group of 7 well. We ambushed them at about 1pm on Sunday - looked to be the usual slow day until we walked in. But the staff handled it well, all jumping into action to be sure we got our sandwiches, soups and everything else as fast as possible - even finding seating in the small dining area for our larger group. This place does house made and cured meats and the quality of their ingredients is high. I would definitely come back if in the area!
