Dr Gilman is a wonderful dentist. I have been a patient for over 7 years and each time I go in I have a great experience. I am not a huge fan of getting dental work done and her and her staff have always made me feel comfortable and at ease. Once I had to have a mold done for a night guard and if you have ever had to do that you have to sit with a tray in your mouth for about 20 minutes so the "cement" could dry. About 5 minutes in I started to have a panic attack because I felt like I couldn't breath with the tray in my mouth ( I know, I know I am a wimp). Instead of making me sit in the room alone and suffer Dr. Gilman sat with me and talked to me to help keep my mind off what was going on. I know she was busy and had other patients but I was grateful she took the time and I know she didn't have to do that. With regards to Covid they are taking all the precautions they can to keep patients and themselves safe. When they reopened in June after the 1st shutdown I was one of the first patients back and 8 months pregnant ( I wanted to get a cleaning before the baby came). At no point did I feel unsafe and they took all the precautions they could to make sure I felt comfortable and safe. I just had another cleaning recently and they are still taking the same precautions. If you are looking for a dentist in the mid peninsula area I highly recommend Dr. Gilman. read more

I have been seeing Dr.Gilman for a few years. In the last year I needed some work done on getting a Partial and she walked me through all the steps and completed the procedure in a timely manner. When we think of dentists, we think of that balding man-dentist with bad breath that looks disapprovingly into your mouth with clanking metal utensils, sighing. He takes off his mask and shakes his head. "No no no, you've got start flossing!" ....Oh yeah, ever take your own advice? A good dentist is hard to find. Especially one that makes you feel relaxed. One you can trust is giving you the best advice about those dear precious teeth, that help you chew delicious, delicious food for as long as possible. (No gruel for me in my old age!) Now that I've been to Dr. Gilman twice, I can safely say she is this person. (The first time wasn't a fluke!) Dr. Gilman is personable and very encouraging. She complemented me in the areas I did well, and sternly gave me recommendations on my weaknesses. But never in a way that made me feel guilty - she explains everything in a non-condescending way - there was never any blame as if I did something wrong. Just areas of improvement explained in a logical, reasonable manner. She never sells anything unnecessary - just honest feedback on a regular check-up. She even told me if I ever wanted to whiten my teeth, the in-store strips do the best job, even better than professional whitening. Can't beat that for honesty! Plus, I like how she made me feel like I have miracle teeth. Apparently I have a lot of ridges in my molars, but I don't have any cavities which apparently is unheard-of! There is something about getting approval from your dentist that makes you feel like a kid again. (Except you don't eat candy or drink soda, because you want to ensure you keep your teeth forever, and you actually think about these things because you ain't a kid anymore.) I chose this dentist for convenience (contracted with my insurance company and close to my house, on my way to work). I would say my experience was 'fine'. The office is disorganized, which I feel trickles down and effects the service. I would recommend getting a pre-treatment estimate for services that are outside of routine cleanings, just to be sure you know what your costs will be after your insurance pays. I LOVE Dr. Gilman and her whole staff! Myself and my whole family switched to her a few years ago and we ALL love going to her. Dr. Gilman and her staff are very personable. They remember all of us and are super warm, caring, caring and interested in getting to know us and how we are doing. They have the BEST hygienists, they get in there and clean well but are very gentle and not rough and painful like our last hygienist was. I had an issue with the new insurance information I gave them when I got married this year and switched insurance and they tried several times to resolve it until I finally got them the right info and it got figured out. Dr. Gilman is everything you could want in a dentist: personable and funny (important when you're staring into each other's eyes for some time); brave; incredible medical reasoning skill and technical execution. I started having cavities at a young age despite regular flossing and cleaning. By the time I got to Dr. Gilman, I had ground down and cracked all of the fillings in all of my back molars. She made recommendations and walked me through pricing before any procedures began, and we prioritized the procedures filling-by-filling. As the visit continued, she essentially performed major reconstruction on all of my molars using the best techniques and optimized products. She focused on my oral care for over 3 hours (with my permission - she asked me when I had to leave and had me out with 5 minutes to spare even!). In that whole time, she only to take care of her other patients (whose visits were much faster than mine, maybe 5 minutes). I walked out with a wonderful bite that day! She even had me fitted for the bite guard that could have clearly prevented such devastation! 3 weeks later, I came back for another 2 hours of incredibly technical replacement work and bite guard fitting. Again, I walked out with a great bite! I feel so fortunate to have been in the care of such a capable and compassionate dentist and team. She and her lean crew (it was just her, Ana, and Kevin) give their 200% everyday, non-stop. She is the absolute best, and if you're a kind-hearted person looking for a kind-hearted dentist, look no further than Dr. Gilman. read more

I decided to see Dr. Gilman based on all the great reviews. Let's start with the receptionist. She's a little behind the times. Every time I called for an appointment, no one answered. I finally left a message and got a call back a day later, but missed the call and she seemed a little confused with leaving me a message. I called back and made an appointment. When I went in she was slow, and made me read everything about all the different kinds of fillings pros and cons (how is someone to keep all that straight? Aren't there basic ones they recommend? Why am I reading about every single one ever in existence? Maybe this is normal...I've never had a cavity, so I don't know.) and sign a paper saying I read it. I felt like I was being treated as a child. I later went in to pickup my x-rays and have her photocopy my insurance and it took her 10 mins to photocopy my insurance. No joke. When I sat down in the chair the assistant was there asking me a few questions and I got the general feeling like this was a new practice and they were asking such obvious questions. Her: "You know I'm going to give you a cleaning?" Me: "Uhh...yeah. that's why I'm here." She asked if I had x-rays done before and how long ago. Then wanted to know if they could get the x-rays from my old dentist ("Why?" Is what I kept thinking. She was taking new ones.). I started feeling a little nervous because everyone seemed inexperienced. Now Dr. Gilman, she was very nice and did the cleaning herself, asked me questions that I couldn't answer because my mouth was open and getting cleaned. I feel like I had questions about what she was saying, but couldn't because she was asking them at a time I couldn't answer. After not having a cavity in my life, she said I had 4 and one might be a root canal, but MAYBE she could save it, we would have to see. I knew I was having problems with that tooth so I wasn't surprised at that, but I was a little surprised at the others. When I questioned her, she gave me a stern response that made me feel like I had no idea what I was talking about and she was the Dr. Maybe I've just gotten away with no cavities for so long that I was due? I made an appointment and left empty handed. Don't you usually get a new toothbrush, some toothpaste and floss? It's silly, but I kind of look forward to my new toothbrush. . However, I kept getting the nagging feeling that I should get a second opinion, just for peace of mind, even though I was sure I was just being overly cautious. I'm glad I did. The second dentist I saw said I only had one cavity and he thought it wouldn't need a root canal, but would be fine with a filling. He said he didn't see any other cavities on the x-rays, but he could see some potential problem areas. Nothing he would ever consider drilling into because you have to take a lot of healthy tooth to fill a cavity and the areas I was pointing out to him that the Dr. Gilman wanted to fill he said would probably go away with this toothpaste he would give me a sample of. Bottom line, I was very disappointed that Dr. Gilman seemed drill happy. Not only is it expensive, but it could ruin potentially healthy teeth for the rest of my life. I find it so scary that you can't trust some dentists and because of this experience I would never be able to trust her. read more

I've been going to Valerie Gilman for almost 3 years. Dr. Gilman is incredible. She is not only wonderful from a bedside manner perspective, and very helpful with insurance questions & issues (I've had 3 in that span of time), but she is a da*n good dentist. I had a serious car accident almost 2 years ago, and required full replacement of two teeth. Between my maxillofacial surgeon & Dr. Gilman (for the actual cosmetic/functional tooth portion) I am 100%, smiling, and eating ciabatta. Don't tell her that Go to Dr. Gilman. I almost never write reviews on Yelp, but once in a while you run into a person, place, or business that leaves such a positive impression that you feel you absolutely have to share your thoughts. I've seen Dr. Gilman every two weeks for the past 2 months, and now that I've finished with my short-term dental needs I can honestly say that she's the best dentist I've been to. Her technical skill is exceptional - the work she does is invisible, she takes quite a lot of care with each procedure, and her concern for her patients made it easy to feel quite comfortable when I'd have otherwise been a bit nervous (needles and drills aren't exactly in my comfort zone). I especially appreciated that her office is open late some days of the week, which is wonderful for those of us that don't want to (or can't) miss time at work. She helped me understand what she was planning to do and why at each step of the way, she designed my treatment around my available insurance, and was just generally and exceptional care provider. Absolute top marks - as long as I'm here and she's practicing I won't need to look for another dentist. read more

I have had to go to Dr. Gilman's office every month (I've been *very* bad to my teeth). She set up a plan for me and I'm happy to say every visit has been really comfortable. She's super nice, very funny, and really detail oriented. Regarding prices and payments, she has been amazing - working with us and being upfront about the costs. I love that the office is open really late on certain days because I can only go after 6 PM. She even stayed extra late one time when a client came in with a tooth emergency (around 8pm!). I originally decided to go to Dr. Gilman because of all of her wonderful reviews on yelp and because of her hours. She's open early in the mornings and on weekends, which is great not having to miss work. When I met her, I felt immediately at ease... she was gentle and considerate (and a great storyteller).... even after all the work I had done, I didn't leave with one of those tension headaches from cringing, like I have with other dentists. I actually drove all the way from San Jose just to see her twice and am happy to keep going back! So I called this afternoon to see to see if they are taking new patients and the lady yes. I then proceeded to tell her that I'm calling on behalf of a young gentleman who is autistic as I'm his guardian. Then she says oh he's autistic, I said yes. And she asked what level is he autistic bc we can't take him if he is autistic. I was like what are you serious? I was so baffled and shocked on what she said and well thanks but you lost my business and thought that was rude and judgmental on her part. Turning 50 and I was suspicious that my family was planning a surprise party for me on Saturday night....I called Dr. Gilman's office and told Ana who got me in at the last minute on Friday to fix a chipped tooth that I was feeling self-conscious about. Ana listened to my story and really went above and beyond to make sure Dr. Gilman would be able to help. Painless, quick and beautiful job! I was right and the party was the next day! I was so happy to be able to smile and laugh with family and friends with my teeth looking great! I found her based off other Yelp reviews but unfortunately, I did not have the same experience as the 5 star reviewers. I will say something positive though, the lady at the front desk is nice. Dr. Gilman has a friendly side but she is unconfident at times, asking for your opinion but when you give it, she gets stern and dismissive. It's hard to describe but her personality is awkward. I saw her a total of two times (one time for a follow up) and I knew I wouldn't be going back after those visits. The worst part was dealing with billing issues. I have 2 dental insurance companies so she had to bill both for the services, which she didn't. I had to give her detailed instructions on how to do it and I have nothing to do with the insurance industry! It isn't that hard, so I figured she could do it. The reason why I say "she" is because I only dealt with Dr.Gilman during all the billing issues. She had me pay $190 out of pocket while she figured out how to bill insurance companies, which seemed like a lot since I have high coverage dental insurance. I didn't hear anything from April until December, so I figured she had received payments from the insurance companies and my out of pocket expense was correct. I contacted her in December to pick up the imaging done there so I could take it to a new dentist and I was greeted with a statement that said I owed over $300 if she couldn't collect from my insurance companies! I couldn't believe it! I asked her what this was about and she said it had been a "nightmare" trying to deal with the insurance companies. I then took matters into my own hands, contacted both insurance companies, sent both of them explanation of benefits and within a couple weeks, my claims were paid to Dr. Gilman. It wasn't that hard, so I don't know how and why she couldn't figure it out. And I also don't know why she contacted me ZERO times from April to December to let me know she was having problems figuring out billing. But wait, there's one last detail.... Dr. Gilman now owed me money, but she said she wouldn't pay me until she received payment from the insurance company. They paid her in the beginning of January and it's now February and I still had not received a refund. It wasn't until I threatened to go to the BBB that I received my refund in the mail. This was the worst dentist I have ever gone to. I'd never go back nor recommend her to anyone! Update- In response to Dr.Gilman's response, I have GEHA and Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance, which are mainstream to me. She never ONCE said she would forgive the remaining amount that she wasn't able to collect from my insurance company- I have written evidence which shows she was going to hold me accountable since she doesn't know how to bill an insurance company properly. Lastly, how can I submit the wrong insurance information? I gave her my insurance cards with all the information right there. She lied on her entire review. If you still choose to go to her, don't say you weren't warned! I found a new dentist who is excellent and didn't mess up on the billing. read more
