Great place to eat breakfast or brunch, just off the highway at the north end of Bluff. Check the…read morehours and days open before you plan on it. FOOD: Excellent. The four of us all had different things, and nobody had any complaints. My breakfast burrito was a little unconventional (a green chili sauce and a spicy gravy on the side) but very, very good. SERVICE: Okay, friendly, maybe a little inexperienced. Also waited a long time to have the check-and-card picked up (ended up going to the front counter). AMBIANCE: It's a cafe. The windows overlook a big dirt parking lot. The place was clean and tidy, though, and I was looking for a good breakfast, not a luxurious setting. NET-NET: I would go back any time I was passing through. Our friends recommended it, and I will, too.

Kind of have to recommend because I think it's the only place in town…read more Best things about this place are the Twin Rocks and the breakfast potatoes. "Wait to be Seated" and I did 25 minutes, although there were plenty of open clean tables. The host told me my server would be with me, he came by shortly with water, silverware, and menu. Didn't ask if I wanted anything to drink while waiting. Took 20 minutes for him to come back. I ordered the Fry Bread Biscuit and Gravy and a cup of coffee. Best thing about the breakfast were the potatoes, they were actually very good. Sliced almost like potato chips and cooked all the way through. Never saw the waiter again. No coffee refill, no "how I'd everything" I finally went to counter. Stood at counter for good 10 minutes. Cashier came by asked if I had paid already, told him "no" He then asked if I had my bill, told him "no" He then found my bill which I paid, and then left. Mediocre food (except for the potatoes which were quite good) and $6.00 for a cup of coffee with no refill. Nearly 2 hours spent in restaurant for breakfast. ‍

Despite being the only choice for dining when staying at The View hotel, it wasn't too bad. I had…read moretheir "chili beans con carne" entree, also known as simply "chili" back east, and it was good. The mix of meat to beans was generous and it tasted like the chili my mom used to make. My taste has moved on since that time, however, and I've had better, more flavorful bowls through the years. My wife's tacos were "standard lunchroom fare" she could have made at home. Still, the food was filling and the service was good. The view during dinner was amazing and served to distract us from the less-than-stellar meal. I recommend it for the view.

Loads of amazing American indian artifacts, gifts, pottery, jewelry and so much more. Hence we noticed the restaurant. It's towards the end of it. I think there's also an entrance from the hotel, which is part of it. We walked in to check out the menu and decided to try it out. Checked in with the hostess and added our name to the waitlist. It was about 20-25 minutes. It was fine, more time to browse the store. There's also an area that you could wait outside with a view of the mountains and plains but it was dark and pitch black. Once we were buzzed and seated. The table already had a carafe of iced water on it. All the tables did. Menu wise, limited but some nice dishes. Don't know if it changes seasonal or it's the same menu. Food wise, went with the Arizona fried chicken. Three pieces tossed in a southwestern batter and deep fried. Served with jalapeños slices. Also a choice of fries, mash potatoes or white rice and seasoned veggies which was corn. And a piece of grilled Arizona bread which is similar to pita bread. Chicken was quite nice and juicy. Batter was good, not too much of it and a nice crunch. It was quite nice. Also had a bowl of soup which was like chicken tortillas without tortilla chips. That was quite nice as well. And an order of the chili beans con carne. A southwestern favorite which was a bowl of chili with shredded cheese and onions and served a side. The beef was flavorful and very hearty. Food was good, service was great. All the staff were very friendly. We asked about breakfast but it's only served for hotel guest. As well as meals after 7pm. Also, they don't have alcohol. Non alcoholic, yes.

The outside of the building is very colorful. High Desert Cafe is a coffee shop, gift shop and diner all in one building. We first checked out the gift shop area before getting our coffee. They have a number of shirts, blankets, jewelry, local stones and art for sale. High Desert Cafe has two separate counters - one for coffee and tea drinks and the other one for food. The food menu has a variety of sandwiches, burgers, salads, breakfast items, smoothies and ice cream. It was early, so we ordered breakfast burritos and coffee on it. The kitchen staff was nice and chatted with us while they cooked our food. There is a small dining area where you can eat your meal when it is ready. High Desert Cafe is a nice hidden gem to stop by if you are passing through Monticello.

They had all the basic breakfast items, things like omelettes and pancakes, etc. They had a decent list of drinks too, and even though it wasn't on the menu they did make me a lavender london fog since they had the ingredients for it. The food was very filling and I left happy! The inside gives off a diner vibe, but slightly more upscale/indie? And they sell some independent products (e.g. lip balm, recipe books, etc.). Bathroom was pretty decent too, but there's only one stall so note that you may have to wait if a few folks are also dining there (was pretty quiet the random weekday morning I cam though). Plenty of free street parking available outside too. Overall it's a cute little spot for brunch if you're passing through Monticello.
