We enjoyed our stay here. Good size room with comfortable king bed. Small bathroom with shower. Wash basin with faucet was in bedroom. i assume all of the rooms are different. Family owned and run. That is their best asset! If they had more family members they would probably be 6 stars! If you're an old time John Wayne fan you'll love the lobby. Wall to wall photos a posters of the Duke and a few other movie cowboys. The steak restaurant is open with a roadhouse feel. Limited menu of an 8 ounce Steak Burger, Flat Iron and NY Strip Steaks. I had the best Fat Iron Steak ever! My fussy wife loved her burger. Each is served with pinto beans and side salad. All on one plate. A heads up to those fussy people who can't have their foods touch. If you visit here Monument Valley Tribal Park is maybe a 30min. drive southwest(?). And I recommend a short visit to Bluff Fort 30min. east of the lodge. It's a small compound telling the story of early pioneers to the area. On the way there you can't miss Mexican Hat Rock which is why the town got its name. Ask Barbara at the lodge desk about the story. read more

I wasn't able to check in due to Verizon having no cellphone service in this sleepy little town. We stayed the night in town on our way up to Colorado so we came in for dinner my boyfriend had to try it. The staff was very friendly, warm and welcoming. They cook your steak to your perfection outdoors the menu is very simple and basic so if you're looking for pork, chicken or seafood don't bother coming in. Our steaks were very delicious they came with pinto beans and iceburg salad. You sit outdoors it's a lot of fun it's the type of place that you have to try at least once. read more

You don't come out here if you're looking for urban lodging cause this ain't urban. That said, this is about the middle of the road for a place to get a night's sleep after swallowing red Monument Valley dust all day. You can stop just outside the reservation and spend $200 a night at Gouldings; you'll dine on fry bread served 10 ways @ $18. Or you can keep driving another 150 miles to a large town like..., uh well the fact is there aren't any large towns out here. Apparently you were misinformed? Or you can head on out to anywhere that suits your fancy on BLM land. Kick the front seat back and hit the sack right there, nothing a night with unlimited stay at that same rate, too. Or best of all, why not try rubbing elbows with some read deal local people here instead? Best thing besides it's well managed and maintained is dinner at the Swingin' Steak restaurant next door. After the sun begins to set you'll be glad to have a place to call it a day over a delicious steak done to a turn by the owner himself. If you're lucky he'll take a minute in the middle of turning steaks to chat a bit, for example that he's also a rodeo cowboy. You'll quickly learn to enjoy that people out here sure aren't city people, and thank god for that. Terrific place, actually. read more

When you're in Mexican Hat, you can hand out five stars without perfect food. I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant that is absolutely one with its place. We parked, walked into the patio, we picked from the menu. That menu is five kinds of grilled meat, or a grilled veggie burger. Nothing else. This is like walking into a friends backyard and getting a steak on the grill. The weather was in the 70's and perfect. They have a big Santa Maria grill. The griller swings the platform across burning wood, not just coals. He knows his stuff. He grills the Texas toast as well. This is what I always imagined TT should be. The beans and salad are forgettable. The experience not. They do a standard $6 split plate right on the menu. We were not overly hungry, so we had two steaks and four plates. The food was at least as good as we could expect. A nearby table was a group of Irish having fun. We joined in a bit and had a nice visit. The dinner and evening perfect. read more

Update 3/18/2020: restaurant is permanently closed. The good: *the rustic atmosphere *the variety of local beers *the smell of the wood fire, *the friendly people staff who take great pride in what they do *the scenery of the southern Utah desert. Just being in this place will put a smile on your face. *everything cooked over a wood fire *the beans and Texas Toast were a very nice touch, as well as delicious. The Bad: *the prices seem a little steep. Take into consideration that in such a remote location as Mexican Hat Utah, everything is a little expensive. Don't come here looking for a Walmart bargain meal. *The limited menu. When I came there was only like 6 things on the menu. Fortunately, I came here for steak and they certainly had that. This is not a full service restaurant. It's a steak grill. I don't think it would really be practical for a full scale restaurant in this area of the country. The ugly: *The fine print at the bottom of the menu indicating that they add a 18% "gratuity" on to your bill. This is almost a deal breaker for me just out of principle. Even though it ends up saving me money (I tend to me a rather generous tipper) I am strictly against a business (especially hotels and restaurants) advertising a false price and then tacking on extra fees at the end. If not for this single fact, I would have given Swinging Steak 4 stars. Would I return? * yes. Probably. Cool place to go on a vacation and share with friends. Dog friendly outdoor seating! The menu is tiny, one sided, and has like six things on it. BUT I'm convinced that's because their specialty is the steak! I don't know if it was because we had been on the road all day or maybe because we were all really hungry for something other than road trip snacks but my father swears this is "the best steak [he has] ever had in the United States" (he felt bad saying the steak he had in Italy was still his number one). Don't let the prices scare you the stab of meat you get must be weighed to be the advertised weight AFTER cooking because the ribeye is HUGE! The name pretty much covers your bases here. All except one thing. If they wanted to TRULY describe the experience it'd have to be called "The AWESOME Swingin Steak." Because that's what it was. Awesome. Or incredible. Or whatever your superlative adjective of choice is. The menu here is pretty basic. Various cuts of beef, plus a hamburger or veggie burger. Then for sides: pinto beans, salad, Texas toast. What that leaves out is that the quality of each of the ingredients is exceedingly high. These are excellent cuts of meat. And they're grilled to perfection. Much credit is due to the chef/grillmaster who obviously knows his trade. His questions about how we liked our steak cooked demonstrated that he understood the importance of proper preparation. One of my complaints is that until you visit a restaurant once, you don't know whether their medium rare is actually a medium for example. Here, we were asked to provide additional detail about what we wanted, ensuring that our steak was cooked just right. Overall, this really hit the spot. I'm staying here right now. This place is really cool. First off, know what you're in for. This isn't a Hampton Inn. It's not a Super 8. It's something else entirely. Retro/vintage roadside hotel in little Mexican Hat, UT. Very western. A good deal (I paid $70 for the night, which was less than originally quoted, but he gave me a deal). Rooms are clean and cute! The website also gives you an idea of the size of the individual rooms so you won't be surprised. The outdoor "swinging steak house" is called such because the steaks are cooked on a fire on a swinging grate, by a cowboy. They cook their pinto beans on an old style cast iron wood stove. Service is fast and friendly, with plenty of 3.2% beer options (oh, Utah!). The food was great! I had the hamburger and it came with homemade Texas toast, salad, and pintos. Yum! The restaurant seems to draw passers by as well as motel guests. There's also a 7-11 across the street should you need anything conveniences that you forgot. I will TOTALLY stay here again if I am passing through another time- Mexican Hat is in the middle of nowhere, so I doubt it's seen as a destination, rather than a stop. Love it! read more

The original plan was to camp in nearby Monument Valley, but after days of driving and sleeping in dirt, we opted to get a motel instead. Then we were faced with the problem of: Where? There weren't too many options in that part of the country. The nearest town was Mexican Hat, so on we drove. On our atlas it was listed in big letters so we assumed it was a decent size. What happens when we assume...? So the town only has about 100 people and a smattering of buildings on its main street. But holy cow, is it adorable. It's sat on the banks of the San Juan river and has a beautiful red rock backdrop. We didn't actually stay in the Mexican Hat lodge, but opted for a place a bit cheaper down the road. And we didn't actually eat at the restaurant because it wasn't open when we were needing food (it opens at 5pm). We did, however, walk down the highway/main road later in the evening to get a beer there because that was about our only option for booze in town. We sat at the outdoor bar, got served by a woman in overalls, and watched a cowboy cooking steaks over a fire. There was a grill swinging above the fire, hence the famous swingin' steaks. They looked amazing and we were kicking ourselves the whole time we were there for not holding out on food. To make up for it, we had Polygamy Porter- why only have one?! Even if they were not of a high percent (yay Utah), PP were pretty good. At one point, I wandered inside the lobby of the lodge and watched (I think the owner) rolling cigars or cigarettes, and admired the many, many John Wayne photos everywhere. If you've been on the road in the southwest, you know that just about everywhere claims to be his home. All in all, it's a place oozing with rustic character. I wish I'd stayed the night, and I wish I ate a steak, but there's always next time! read more

So you're visiting Monument Valley and the closest non-outrageously priced lodging is in a town called "Mexican Hat." What is a Gringo to do? My trusty travel sidekick and I were literally so psyched for this town that we talked about it for weeks before our trip. It was like "OMG, Mexican Hat... Can. Not. Wait." A zip through Mexican Hat reveals that if you zip at more than 5 mph, you'll miss it. I love it! According to TripAdvisor, The Swingin' Steak is "#1 of 2 restaurants in Mexican Hat" (sorry to their non-winning competitor!). The premise of a steak-themed open-air restaurant where a (veritable) cowboy cooks your meat on some kind of oscillating grill was really just too much to resist. OK, let me get to the point... After a long day's drive down to the Monument Valley area, plus a rigorous jaunt through the "Unimproved Navajo Nation Park" (our car was not amused), a stop at The Swingin' Steak for some meat and brew was "oh-so-necessary." Placed alongside a motel, it's a super low-key place for a nice bite and to exhale. I ordered the burger platter which came with a huge slice of Texas Toast, beans and a lightly dressed salad. My friend went for the veggie burger variation which she said was pretty good. Truthfully, it's a bit overpriced ($13 for the burger platter), but given our location and relative desire for a chill establishment, it was more than satisfactory. One thing to mention is that our Dos Equis beers were 3.2% abv (ish) since this is Utah. Kind of lame... I would've brought a flask had I known! All told, a memorable and enjoyable experience. Not worth the money at all. And when you leave you stink like smoke worse than the sweat you've been stinking up in the hot sun! I had to wash my hair before going to bed! And the service was very bland to say the least. I know there's not much in the way of food choices in town but next time if I ever choose to stay here again (doubt it) I'll eat at the other place. Yeah the steaks swing but that doesn't make anything taste better. The menu states that for tables over 5, it's an automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill. For everyone else, it's 18% gratuity and 7% tax. The menus very limited, there's two 8oz steaks for about $24 each, a 14oz for $36 and 18oz for $40 as well as a burger for about $15. We got an 8oz each. The steak was good flavour-wise, mine was slightly overcooked, hubbys was perfect but I didn't bother sending mine back. The sides were very ordinary and basic. According to the website the beans are meant to be soupy, but the garlic toast had no traces of garlic at all. We also had 3 beers, all of them $4 each and no taps. Total bill came to OVER $70!! And more than $10 of that was for the forced grumpy gratuity!! WTF! read more

Awesome place to sit diwn and rekax after a day full of adventure around colorful Utah. The place is very unique with amazing ambient, amazing food (simple but delicious cooked on the swinging grill) and full of Amazing worker. Everybody seems to be on the top of their game starting from cooks and ending with waiters. The decor is Awesome too and doesn't let you to forget you are at far Wild West. They have outside sitting under the roof with a centrally located fireplace. If you lucky enough you can get to sit by it. :) I haven't stayed in their lodge but it looks great too. You can tell that the owner cares about his/her guest. The place looks clean and very cozy. I regret i didnt get to see the rooms because i belive they would be super cute. Wow! Last summer we decided to take a trip around the Four Corners area and thank goodness we found this place! We originally booked a room in nearby Kayenta that was much more expensive, and luckily switched to the Mexican Hat Lodge, which houses this restaurant. I'm so glad we did! The restaurant and lodge are in the small town of Mexican Hat, and in view of the actual formation itself. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Don't expect anything super fancy, it's definitely a laid back place. There's a tiny bar and lots of tables out doors; everything is arranged so you get a good shot of the action. This is one of the most unique cooking styles I've seen; the fire pit is topped by what I can only describe as a flat swinging-cradle type of grill. Your chosen cut is tossed on the grill and cooked while swung, tended to by the cook in the cowboy hat. The swinging grill is center stage and is pretty much the best cookout I've ever been to! The menu is simple and after a day on the road and in the heat I really appreciated that. You can pick from 3-4 cuts of meat, a burger and a vegetarian burger (which is pretty accommodating seeing as how the place is called "Swingin' Steak"). I ordered the sirloin and my husband had the ribeye, both medium rare, and they were both absolutely delicious. They were huge, perfectly and simply cooked, deliciously crusted on the outside and juicy on the inside, served very simply on a metal plate and accompanied by a small dressed salad, some cowboy beans and a piece of Texas toast (also cooked over the fire and yummy)! This paired with an ice cold beer made a perfect meal. Afterwards we just nursed some beers, pet the dog hanging out in the restaurant, watched the cook do his thing and enjoyed the evening desert breeze! read more

We stayed in Unit "A" Which was actually a small mobile home off to the right of the main lodge. The room was nice and clean, the bed comfortable. However when we awoke and opened the door in the morning we were greeted by the strong smell of sewage. The restaurant was just okay. The swinging grill a gimmick..but the burger was good, and the beans were beans. The 18% tip added onto the tab I didn't care for either. A mandatory sum ceases to be a gratuity, In my opinion. So where to start? This place is fantastic! We got there shortly before sunset and got to choose a table. The swinging steak filled up later and almost all tables where full. Sure, there aren't a lot of options around in Mexican Hat, but this is the place to go. The "chef" at the swinging grill was very nice, as well as the other staff. The location is authentic and cosy. There tables are spread around the swinging grill and the outdoor kitchen. They don't need a fancy kitchen or dining room. Outside is just fine! The swinging of the grill and the fire have something relaxing to it. You also wouldn't expect a steak house to serve a vegetarian option, would you? Yet, this place has a "veggie pattie". My spouse had that and liked it a lot. I got the 8oz sirloin and it was to the point! Together with the garlic bread and the beans, this made a perfect ensemble and sure was heaven to our taste buds! We even ordered a second round of the bread because it was so delicious. The prices at fair for what you get! Beware of Bob, the owner. I arrived with my reservation confirmation printed out. He refused to honor it and told me that I would have to pay $175 for a room I had a confirmed reservation for that stated the price was $112. I had driven down to do some work for a group that was staying in Mexican Hat and had booked many rooms in the 4 lodging establishments in town. Apparently this really made Bob mad and so he had a chip on his shoulder about this group and included me in his very low opinion. He threatened to not rent the room to me and I was forced to smile and pretend to agree with him about the group so he would give me the room. He eventually settled on over charging me and settled on the price of $125 and told me I could take it or leave it. He was exceptionally rude and arrogant to me and knew there was no other room available for the night and i would have to miss the work I had been hired for and drive back home 2 hours if I didn't pay the extra fees. I had called him that morning to confirm the reservation and when I gave him my name he told me "names don't mean anything to me, what is your room number", which I didn't have yet, so how was I supose to give it to him? He also went on and on about how this group had put an a link to his website on their web page which was "illegal". I told him it wasn't illegal, then he shot back at me "Well, it is totally unethical". and I had to agree with him and smile again, just to get the room. The room was ok. No way was it worth the $175 he was trying to charge me or the $125 he eventually settled on. It had two very comfortable king beds and a nice bathroom except for the shower. However, there was only a tiny bit of toilet paper in the bathroom and I was forced to walk across the street to the mini mart and PURCHASE toilet paper! The shower was very scratched up and part of the tub peeling off. The surroundings outiside are horrible. I have posted a couple of pictures. Upon leaving I filled out the "how are we doing card" with negative feedback about my experience with him and he actually called me and left a nasty, ugly voice mail. Seriously rethink your lodging if you are planning on staying here. This man is an ugly human who was very rude and nasty, and has no problem using extortion. read more

A blast from the past! This place reminds me of being a kid traveling with my grandparents... A place near where John Wayne filmed movies and you expect him to still walk through the door. This place feels like the American west. I usually use steak sauce (A1) not here the steaks are cooked to perfection and the service is super friendly! So glad we found this treasure! Enjoy!!! Steaks were good. Had to send back one because it was undercooked. Beans were a little bland... No beer on tap, no wine. Got my boyfriends drink order wrong (twice). Not very hospitable wait staff... "Do you know what you want?" Upon approaching a new customer just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And this is coming from a person with 8+ years experience in the food serving industry. Even worse was the forced gratuity on the check. Even if you did a mediocre job we still have to tip you to your liking? Even worse than that is on the credit card receipt they ask you for additional tip (HAHA). Swingin' Steak was a massive disappointment! The food and service were abysmal. The steak was chewy (note that this was their cheapest steak, the 8 oz. sirloin at $24), the Texas Toast was burned, the beans were watery to the point of inedible, the salad was served without dressing...and sitting on top of the beans! As for the service...the staff acted like it was a chore to interact with patrons, when they even bothered to do so. And for the privilege you'll pay an automatic 18% gratuity! The only part of the experience that wasn't a negative is the Wasatch Polygamy Porter beer I had with dinner. So instead of sticking around for another drink, we grabbed a six-pack across the street and brought it back to the motel! Ate dinner there a few evenings ago. Ordered the 8oz steak that came with beans and salad. Steak was alright, beans had no flavor so had to add salt (which I never usually have to when eating out) and the best part of the salad was the dressing. However the one star review is for the service! Waitress acted as if it was our privilege to be graced with her presence. She appeared to be annoyed and definitely did not want to be waitressing. The worst part of the evening came with our bill. She added on her own 18% gratuity ($17.00) to the bill. When questioned, she gave an aghast look. She replied the reason was because tourists like to have it there because they never know what to pay. PLEASE NOTE: ITS NOT MANDATORY!!!!! We asked her to remove the tip from our bill and we would leave our own. While she said "tourists" I believe she meant "foreigners" because I was a tourist and did not appreciate nor ask for gratuity to be added. This tells me the owner and/or wait staff are taking advantage of people traveling from a different country. I feel awful for people who do not know better because they are just there to enjoy a meal using their hard earned money and she is praying on them. read more

It was years ago that we took a road trip to Arizona and Utah and we stumbled into this place. We needed a place to stay and this place was the only thing available on the highway for miles. It is not a 4-star hotel but it served it's purpose. I must say that this restaurant has one of the best steaks i've ever tasted. I can care less about the beans and the salad but the steak blew me away!!!! The steak was perfectly cooked, perfect amount of seasoning and tender and the way I wanted it, medium done! Was great!!! Steaks are grilled over juniper wood. Is is a unique experience. It is all outside dining.

We were on a road trip through various parts of Arizona and I used Yelp to find places to lodge, eat, and visit. Very helpful. We spent one night at the Mexican Hat Lodge. The room was spacious, clean, comfortable, quiet and pleasant, although perhaps a bit dated in decor. Bob checked us in and was welcoming and helpful. The Lodge was a good choice. Reasonably priced. My husband is a truck driver and has eaten at this place many many times. The food is always great. The service was a little hit and miss. If this place is truly closed, we would love to purchase the grill from you. He hasnt stopped talking about that grill since the first time he visited years ago. It's a shame that I am finally able to travel with him and this place is closed. He's been wanting to take me there for a long time read more
