I love that they're willing to mix flavors... I got Cookie Dough and some kind of Chocolate Panda Paws thing. Very good, both of them. I was lucky enough to get the Owner to serve me and he chatted my family up for a good deal of time just after closing, as we were some of the last customers of the night. We were lucky to find them open when my daughter got an ice cream craving. So many things are still closed up here now (either due to COVID or it being early in the Spring), and we walked in right before closing time and didn't get our 'bulls basted'... it was a relief for something like good ice cream to be had on our vacation. Thank you for the really nice reception, Mr. Owner & crew! And yes, your ice cream has got to be about half the price of what that generous portion would be down south in NYC!

While the flavors aren't super unique and not cheap, the ice cream is homemade and organic. I enjoyed the Mexican chocolate, which was vegan (and I haven't found a lot of vegan ice creams that were that great). While the inside is pretty bare bones, there's a few tables and chairs outside that are fun to sit at. They also have colored chalk to entertain the kiddos. At Governor's Tavern, if you want a gin and tonic, you simply ask for a gin and tonic. The only decision you need to make is which gin you'd like. I'm not much of a cocktail person, but I appreciate that not every place feels the need to reinvent the wheel. The place was packed at lunchtime, but we got lucky and grabbed a pair of seats across from the bar. The server who I quoted was genuinely friendly and welcoming. I ordered a Guinness, but unfortunately the keg had just kicked. She recommended the Samuel Smith chocolate stout instead and even brought me a sample before I committed to taste since I never heard of it, which was a nice touch. For food, we ordered the State Grill burger and the Nashville Hot chicken sandwich. Both were excellent, and each came with Belgian-style hand-cut fries. If you're spending the day browsing the boutiques and antique shops along Warren Street and want a drink, a good meal, and a lively mix of locals and tourists, Governor's Tavern is worth a stop.
