Been here a couple times since moving to the area and the staff has been friendly. The best part of this place is the prices. This place has everything you would need for a BBQ they offer a variety of spices and different types of meat. This place is my to go place for affordable high quality cuts of meat. I walked out of here with 3 lbs of chicken breasts and spent between 5-6 dollars. This butcher shop is really affordable and so far good quality meat. Newarkians should check it out. I have been buying my meat here for 28 years now. Only time I have an issue is when they have new people. Because I buy my meat for 2-3 months. And the newer guys don't know me. This morning, our housekeeper found a plastic bag from Best Provisions in Newark (see review in Yelp) where I had bought 5-lbs of Sid's hot dogs last week. So I told her about Best and then, in return, she told me about "A Casa do Mario" meat market in Newark. She said that for palomilla - cuban steak - Casa do Mario had great meat at great prices. So, for the gigantic BBQ planned for the 4th, why not make palomilla in addition the the burgers and sausage, and leave the Sid's dogs to amuse the refrigerator for the weekend? And what better excuse to drive to Newark to Casa do Mario? Punch this address into your nav or google maps: 223 Wright Street, Newark, NJ 07114 and start to drive. Casa di Mario is actually the retail store of Valley Provisions - a meat wholesale butcher and distributor. Park on the street or in the parking area below the loading docks and enter the retail store, which is well marked. You'll go past racks and shelves of exotic spices in large containers to the meat counter manned by 7 or 8 butchers in white coats. Be sure to take a number from the dispenser at the end of the wall on the left, just to the right of the cashier's window. We were novices at buying meat for Cuban dishes, but the butcher was very helpful and gave us a 12-lb boneless Top Sirloin which he kindly sliced into 1/2 thick tranches for the palomilla. So, there it is: 12-lb boneless top sirloin...$2.39 a pound! Sliced! Whoa!! I'm there forever. Since I do many smoked whole briskets, I asked the price and was quoted $1.99 per pound for the whole packer's cut, cryo wrapped. This is the best price l've found in the area. So, if you're anywhere near Newark, or even if you're not so near, take the drive to Valley Provisions, A Casa do Mario, and meet your meat. read more

Love this place. Not speaking Spanish/ Portuguese makes it tough if you get one of the guys who only speak those languages ( so be mindful and make sure to ask for exactly what you want; be specific ). All the meat is top quality, from the ribs to the steaks and the pork. I find myself normally ordering one item I've not had, like the Argentine or Brazilian sausages. I've seen folks order whole cleaned pigs and etc, so they are a full tilt shop. I used to shop for all my meats at those wholesale clubs, but once I got turned onto this place I go every two weeks to stock up for the house. The guys do a great job of cutting and cleaning. When I order chicken they are happy to clean the breasts or cut into cutlet slices and bag. They weigh everything out for you so you know what you're getting. They have some fish, but have never gotten any, so no idea on that. But, some suggestion to make life easier .. First, get there early. They open around 7am. Around 10am it's a madhouse if it's a non-holiday weekend. For a holiday ( oh, say 4'th of July ) don't go on a weekend. I find that middle of the week in the early afternoon is best for a holiday. When it's crowded, it's probably an hour wait from ticket to you leaving. On a non-holiday, I can be in and out in 15 minutes with a decent sized order. If you get there later in the day, parking can be an issue. You might have to park a block away, which isn't exactly the most comfortable for carrying items or feeling secure. Another suggestion, while you're waiting for your number to be called, take a look around at the shelves and cold cases. They have some really good deals you'd never find otherwise. read more
