Worden State Park on a recent sunny afternoon, after having spent the previous four days camped along the Olympic coast near Joyce. We were also particularly thrilled to see a sign for "live music" starting in just a few hours! We got our campsite set up, enjoyed a little afternoon snack, then headed down to Taps on our bikes. This former guardhouse is perched near the Fort's entrance, and there are even some of the original jail cells inside (yes, you can sit inside of them if you dare)! Even though it was a weekday afternoon, the place was packed inside and out. Lucky us, we managed to snag the last table in the beer garden. I sat down while the dude went inside to order (sadly, they don't offer table service). The band had just stepped offstage for a break, so I enjoyed a little people watching (and tried to ignore the chilly sea breeze) while I waited for Dude to return with my beer. The wait stretched into over 30 minutes until he finally returned, reporting a rather large line (and only one bartender) inside. The beers were also $9/each. But hey, we were on vacation. You kinda expect these things, I guess. Finally, the band returned and played some pretty great music. We finished our beers and now it was my turn to head inside to the slow-as-molasses bar line. By now, there were two people working the counter, although only one of them seemed to be actually pouring beers, making cocktails, etc for those of us in the beer line. The other one was mostly focused on the 3-4 customers who had been lucky enough to snag seats (and, apparently, premium service) directly at the bar. There was a lot of mumbling in the line about how slow and inefficient it all was. However, as (quite literally) the only game in town, we all pretty much had no choice but to either wait for our beers, or slump back to our campsites for Rainiers. Luckily, by the time I returned with our second round, Dude had scored a sunny table closer to the band, so it was starting to feel like summer again. In fact, we were having such a lovely time that Dude decided we may as well enjoy another round (hey we weren't driving). $60 of beers later, we drifted back to the campsite after what was a pretty enjoyable, if not at times frustratingly slow, experience. We also returned a few days later for another show, and they seemed much better staffed. Perhaps our experience the first night was not common.

The vibe of the place is casual, with a couple of TV screens set to various sports channels and old music on the playlist. The two of us shared a full portion of the Washington apple salad, I had the meatloaf burger, and my dinner buddy had the mushroom stroganoff, which he enjoyed. Portions are generous here, I am happy to say, and we were absolutely stuffed afterward. We honestly probably didn't *need* to order the salad, but we were both wanting the vegetables to balance out the meal. The salad was huge and full of beautiful fresh leaves, dressed lightly but evenly with a great vinaigrette, topped with crunchy apple chunks and slices, walnuts, and blue cheese. It's delicious but actually feels healthy. The meatloaf burger is awesome. The meatloaf itself is moist, not overly bread crumby, well seasoned, and there's a right thick slab of it in the sandwich. I chose the Teddy Oggie which is a traditional steak pasty and I also ordered their Big Dawg because I'm a big girl and I'm familiar with the size of a pasty so I thought I might need a little something extra. When I arrived, the vibe was kind of awkward. There was music playing and there were only one or two other people inside. The staff wasn't particularly welcoming and after a few minutes I was happy to grab my food and leave. As I walked back to my car I realized I had a little time before I had to head to the ferry so I stopped at an outdoor table to have a little sample before I headed out. The food was so dry. And I don't mean a little dry, I mean really really dry. The pasty in particular was overwhelmingly crusty with very little moisture or flavor to balance it out. I was hoping for something warm and savory but instead it was just brittle and stale. It tasted old . Like it had been sitting out for a while and then been overcooked . After a few bites I threw it away and felt relieved that I had bought a second item because I hadn't eaten all day. The sausage was just as bad. The bun was so dry it was crunchy. I didn't mind that the sausage skin had a crunch to it, but unfortunately once I got inside it wasn't moist or juicy either. Oh and the little tiny sliver of mustard that they put on top? I could have pushed that all into one bite and it still wouldn't have been enough. I took a few bites and threw that away too. I understand pasties can be crusty and that's part of what makes them a pasty, but there's a huge difference between being so dry and crusty that it's difficult to eat and having a real savory pasty. The whole experience was so disappointing. I don't know if Yelp has made a huge mistake with the rating for this place or if I just caught them on a bad day. I love the idea and I often go to British pub style restaurants when I can but based on my experience here I would not recommend this location.

To get to The In Between, you simply go through the main entrance to the Sirens Pub building, but instead of heading into the pub go up one flight of stairs. We checked in at the bar and seated ourselves, and then were quickly greeted with menus and water. We very much got the sense that while the folks here take cocktails very seriously, they don't take themselves overly seriously. There's no unnecessary pretense, and no need to be an expert to enjoy your time here. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, which made us feel so at ease. That plus the comfortable space, dim lighting, and perfect noise level (not eerily quiet, but no so loud that you couldn't have a conversation with the person in front of you) made for a lovely experience. We each nursed a delicious drink -- a mezcal cocktail for me and a straight up spirit for him (we enjoyed that they feature local producers!) -- while enjoying each other's company and the excellent atmosphere here. What more could you ask for?
