Writing this review, I am filled with uncertainty and trepidation as I want to be both balanced and fair. The young lady that took our order was most definitely not friendly, but not necessarily over the top rude. The owner was a bit brisk, however ended up being slightly more friendly when I tried very hard to be both polite and respectful. Ultimately I would not suggest that you make your decision based on the service. The food is what I am the most disappointed in. There were (3) of us, (1) ordered the fish sandwich and felt that it was fairly good. Unfortunately, (2) of us ordered burgers and that is where the "wheels come off this train". Technically, the cook of the burgers and fries, which was appreciated. The problem was the absolute lack of seasoning on both the burgers and the fries. Unfortunately, even a well cooked burger falls into the sad state of mediocrity when not seasoned. I personally find it depressing when I cheat and have a burger expecting a deliciously seasoned patty only to bite into what easily could be mistake for a calorie-laden cardboard sandwich. My final thought, who cares about the service, it should be all about the food. If Fat Smitty's would just get a good seasoning salt like @Kinders and generously season the burgers and the fries, I would consider coming back and would increase my rating. If on the other hand they stubbornly refuse to listen to the many reviews that have identified this issue, then regrettably, this will be a "one and done" experience for me personally. Looking for a quick bite to eat while on the road? You have to stop here. The burgers are massive! My husband and I stopped here because we saw how cool it looked inside online. It definitely lived up to the expectations. It's small and cozy. I want to think that the owners were working the front and back, as we overheard them talking about scheduling. They're both really nice and very accommodating. You also need to snag a souvenir here to say you stopped in. We got a magnet but they offer key chains and shirts as well. The coffee is also a requirement as it'll warm you up on a cold drive in to port Angeles. Fun spot for pictures too! Also, they are CASH ONLY but offer an ATM to use which was great. Hubby and I are on a road trip. This is a great roadside place to stop and eat! Plenty of parking. Small inside but has a lot of character. Service was quick. We ordered burgers with fries (onion rings are an option) and shakes. The shakes were SO flavorful. They have had a tradition for years of guests putting money in the walls and ceiling. Walked in and right away felt pretty gross. This is a dive restaurant for sure but the carpet and everything in it looked as if it had never been cleaned or wiped down ever. Staff was rude and seemed annoyed we had our young children with us. Didn't offer to get the kids waters or anything (we had to share out glasses with them...) Our kids are young and not used to drinking out of a cup without a straw so one swallowed too quick, started choking on the water a bit and started to cough it out when a different worker came out of the back and said "uhh disgusting, I don't know why people take their sick children out with them." The food itself was mediocre at best and made us feel sick later. Once we finished we raced to the ATM in the back to pay as it is a cash only establishment and we didn't feel welcome from the start and wanted to leave right away. If it wasn't for a family members low blood sugar we would have walked out when we first got in and were treated poorly. I routinely drive from Bremerton to Port Angeles for work and this little chalet style greasy spoon is right on the way. Decided to stop in one day because I am a sucker for a good hole in the wall burger joint. I walked in and was greeted with thousands of dollars worth of paper money stuck to the walls and hanging from the ceiling. I saw various hats from different military units tacked to the wall as well, and more than a few Trump stickers attached to the fridge. I was in heaven. Being a conservative woman I'm used to having to hold my tongue and suppress my conservative beliefs. Not here! Hey Conservatives need safe spaces too! The waitress is an older lady that wears a black bandana and looks like she would be just as comfortable on the back of a bike as she does behind the bar. One star for service, two stars for food. When we went in with our party of 6, the place was dead silent even though all the tables were full. Since we had four young restless children we asked if we could sit outside and they said no, until my son tried to ask the waitress a question and she ignored him even when he politely repeated himself. Then they decided we could sit outside. Cash only, so I went to get some from the ATM in the back and I heard the two waitresses talking badly about us bringing our kids in. Way, way overrated! I guess maybe it's just seen it's better days and relies on nostalgia to keep it going. Service, food and building were all very "tired" and not worth the stop. This was my first time here at Fat Smitty's and will be my last. There was only one table with customers when we arrived so not sure why service was non-existent with three women standing behind the counter. The youngest one said to sit wherever we wanted then never came back! Finally one of the older gals reminded her to get us menu's and take our orders! I got the BBQ sandwich and hubby got the burger. I also got a bowl of clam chowder which I couldn't even eat, it was gross!! Straight from a generic can gross! The BBQ sandwich was way overloaded with sweet BBQ sauce and very little meat. It was dirty, smelled overwhelming of grease and strong cleaner, WAY over priced, the money all over was really dusty and the blower for heat was really gross to be under while you're eating, waitress was a bit odd, the food was meh, potato salad and coleslaw were a pass, fries were okay, burgers were chewy, so much so I spit out quite a bit as you can see in all the napkins balled up. The produce on the burger's were good, lettuce, tomatoes, onion etc... It was as tacky, as the political signs in the front of the restaurant. Very off putting...it's a hard pass. Quirky little diner on the outskirts. The food was alright the clam chowder was a little watery, the chili was homemade, but the double decker burger was hunch worthy and so juicy would come back for that alone. You can order either inside or out. The place is cash only with an ATM on sight. My favorite part is the walls are covered with dollar bills they donate to charity every 2 years the lady working informed us last donation exceeded 25,000 dollars. Stopped here again on my way back from another backpacking trip. Was super hungry and looking forward to the meal. Again the burger did not disappoint. Two things: first, they are cash only. They have an ATM- and there may be signs, but it's not really clear. I must've paid cash the last time I was there, a year ago, but I didn't remember that. Just a heads up. Second: this place has a visible political stance that either I was too hungry to really notice the first time or has increased significantly in the last year. I make no judgements here about ANY political or social stance- for me this isn't the forum to do that- but you should note that this is very clearly an establishment that supports Trump and is visibly anti LGBTQ. There are signs and banners declaring as such- so if that makes you uncomfortable, I'd advise staying away. Personally, I don't like to mix politics with good burgers. read more

I had great memories of going to Fat Smitty's when I first moved to Washington. At the time, I had just finished a long backpacking trip and it was a college tradition to get a Smitty burger after a long hike. I remembered the burgers being colossal and unctuous. I also had a vivid memory of a their interior--- the walls were covered in hanging dollars. I went back this week for the first time in 20 years. The place was about the same: their menu hasn't changed and their walls were still plastered with dollars. The only change I noted was a plethora of Trump signs and MAGA paraphernalia. Let's just say these additions did not do much to wet my appetite.... My boyfriend and I both got the Smitty Burgers with fries. The Burgers were colossal (I took a portrait of mine and actually used my phone's portrait mode). Aside from the size of the burger, I can't say that there was anything special about the food. It was a standard burger. Yes it was greasy and it did fulfill my craving but it doesn't rank among the best burgers I've had. It wouldn't even grace my list of top Washington burgers. These days, Smitty's seems to be geared towards a very specific crowd. Everything is bigger and great (but not really). It is an experience though, and if you are driving home from a hike it might be worth it for you to stop and see for yourself. read more

I am an eleven year old girl and I had a great time. Even though I'm not a big fan of burgers, this one was delicious I'm a bit shy but I was able to talk to the waiter she was nice and I gave her the check at the end. The ceiling and walls were decorated with colored dollar bills and we were able to make our own to put on the wall! Even though it was cash only they fortunately provide you with a ATM machine the food was delicious I got a deluxe burger and it was awesome!.
