Work on your customer service! John, who answers the phones is exceptionally rude! Told me my car was done but wouldn't tell me what they did. Told me to get there before they close if I want to talk to the guy who did it. I said I didn't have a ride so can you have the guy who did it call me. He said they were busy and if I want to talk to them I need to find my way to the shop before they close. So I asked to talk to Mike the owner, he was recommended to me by the guy who I bought my car from, but Mike is also busy and he would leave him and message and see if he might call me back. I just want to know what was done on my car! If I can't get there before closing you want me to pay and you'll leave the key but you won't tell me what work was done! I took my 20 year old work car to this business today. The guy at the counter took one look at me (female) and my car (old) and started giving me the mechanic song and dance ("we can proooobably look at it later this week, it's gonna be a lot of money. If we have to fix something it's gonna be a lot of money" I needed an alignment and to have my tires rotated "We can look at your a/c for $104 but if something needs to be fixed, it's reeeaaaally expensive". I asked if he could be more specific. "Like $1000". Ok, that's a typical price for an a/c replacement, but this guy and his "expensive" talk is annoying and condescending. He has no idea, and nor is it his business, what people can and cannot afford. It turns out that the work that needed to be done is less than the amount I talked the seller down from his asking price yesterday when I paid cash for the car. It also turns out that I'll be taking the car elsewhere for the repair. It goes without saying that finding a good mechanic is a challenge. The right balance of expertise, honesty, and value is hard to come by. Valpo Muffler is one of the best I've found the area. We have used their repair services twice in the past six months for exhausted related issues, and both times have been fantastic. For each issue, the owner, John, personally inspected our car and gave a free estimate for the repairs. The work was done quickly and in line with the very reasonable cost they quoted. What makes Valpo Muffler exceptional though are the little things. It's wonderful to find a mechanic who is not only good and fair but also friendly. When unexpected exhausted issues cropped up with our Honda Civic, John got us in that afternoon and completed our repairs in less than a hour. Of course, more complicated issues would have taken longer, but it was wonderful seeing a mechanic put his customer's needs first. A few things to note - Valpo Muffler does service most automotive issues but it is only a non-electrical mechanic meaning they only service issues with drive train, engine, exhaust, etc - they do not handle body, electrical, or computer services. They also will give you no-fuss, free visual estimates right there but any diagnostic testing will come with a fee. With this in mind, you cannot find many mechanics much better than the folks at Valpo Muffler. read more

I went in to get my manifold replaced and they said that the converter had to go Alain with it. Ok. Well long story short know. My Ebs light is on ABS light is on and my anti lock brake lock light is also on. Which weren't on before I went in there. They looked at it went off for 10 minutes and came right back on . Than the back part of my muffler never rattled know it does. So so figure. No one wants to own up to anything so know my Machnic has to fix what they caused. Never again. read more

I was sent here by my mechanic to have an intermediate pipe fabricated that would have cost $1500 from Mitsubishi or $700 on the aftermarket. John was able to create the pipe for about $150. If I didn't like my regular mechanic so well, I'd definitely use this shop if I had other problems. read more

Great service! I needed a muffler repair and Fred was able to get me in the same day! Both Fred and Greg showed me the underside of my vehicle and explained how the repair would be done. The quote was very fair, and they had me in and out in less than 1/2 hour! It was quality work too! They also checked my front and rear brakes and said they were good and didn't need any work. They showed me another problem that a previous mechanic had told me I should get repaired. It was so nice they actually showed me where the problems were and gave me a much more detailed and reasonable quote than another repair shop had quoted me. I was all ready to have an entire new muffler system put in my truck. The truck is 20 years old and I was having some issues with some of the pipes. I called 2 different places for a quote. Valpo muffler beat the other quote by $300. Also, they were the only one to say they would check and see if I really needed all the parts. If not, they would only replace what was needed. And that is what they did. I only needed an O2 sensor and some hangers. The owner was very friendly and helpful. I am calling them now to have some other work done. We wish that we would have found Valpo Muffler earlier! I think it is fair to say that when it comes to mechanics, honesty isn't always the first characteristic that comes to mind, but Valpo Muffler takes away any fears of being ripped off. The staff works efficiently and follows up with phone calls regarding any issues. They also offer a quote and will tell you the difference between if something NEEDS to be done vs CAN be done. They really aren't out to get you, and seem to pride themselves on "family business." We live in Valpo, but had recently purchased a used truck as a secondary vehicle in another town. After getting an inspection from a mechanic before the purchase, we knew that some work was needed and received quotes for the work. When we brought the truck back to Valpo, we called and got a second quote from Valpo Muffler. Not only was the quote cheaper, but we were able to take the truck in to see if everything actually needed to be done. They laid out all of the prices, and it turned out that we didn't even need both sets of ball joints. After a service light came on the truck a few weeks later signifying a misfire, we took it back to Valpo Muffler. They could have easily said this and that needed to be fixed, but after they drove if for almost a week without experiencing the same problem, they advised against any work at that time.
