Val's is a great local pet store, but unlike lots of smaller outlets, there's actually a ton of selection here. And what was most surprising is that the prices are even lower than you'll find at Petco. I even came across my dog's favorite dental treats for cheaper than Costco. I also buy my wild birdseed and suet here, so I've got all the critters around my house covered. When you can shop a local small business without sacrificing budget or selection, it's a win-win. Val's looks a bit rough at first glance - not as fancy as those other pet food stores, but they have everything you need. I've come to appreciate Val's for their selection, prices and customer service. I go for dog & cat food, but they seem to have all the critters covered with both food and supplies. They carry toys, pet beds, food, treats, feeders and much more. The people that work there are always super pleasant and nice. The prices are reasonable, and cheaper then my local grocery store. I went to purchase pet treats today and couldn't believe there were roaches crawling on the dog treats that were out of their packages above the pig ears! then I walked around the back part of the store where the large bags of dog food are and i saw another cock roach! Great local pet store. They have a large selection and staff seems ok. I have never had to ask them for help in picking out anything since I do all my home work at home before I even step foot in a store. I have noticed a lot of younger (maybe high school?) workers who seem nice but are very involved in each other instead of asking if they can help you. In a recent visit a older lady who clearly was confused and was wandering around for a while. She asked me for my opinion on different brands of dog food. I never mind sharing info with others and gave her my opinion but the staff really should have helped her. It is their job after all. read more

Val's is a great local business and fully deserving of your support. They've been around what feels like forever and it's easy to see why. Crammed inside this relatively small building is a wide selection of knick knacks and necessities for all varieties of pets. And the prices are great, too. In addition to their already rock solid pricing... they do price match coupons/deals for any local competitors (PRINT ads only, though). Val's also carries a nice assortment of their own proprietary blends of bulk items. I come to Val's regularly to restock on their blends of guinea pig food and wild bird thistle. I almost always wind up walking out with something(s) else as well, randomly stuff I didn't know I needed found whilst wandering the store. Keep on keeping on, Val's. Ridiculous return policy. I got a martingale collar for my dog that ended up being way too big, practically unusable, and even though it has been less than 72 hours, I can't return the collar WITH a receipt because I lost the little paper tag. Considering I was willing to take store credit and purchase something else? Terrible customer service. It's an unused collar! This is probably the worst pet store I've ever been in. It was completely filthy. Was in there for 10 minutes with no one around to help me, had to run out because the smell of smoke was just suffocating me and caused an asthma attack and had to just run out. If this is how filthy they keep the place, I can just imagine the kind of low quality items they actually sell. Never again! Located on Rochester Rd at 14 mile this independently owned pet store has a great selection of food, toys, treats, and more for your furry friends. In addition to cat and dog goodies, Val's stocks supplies and food like live crickets for reptiles. The staff is caring and compassionate, your animals always welcome. The prices at Val's are comparable, if not better to the large chain, I should know, I'm feeding three cats! They sell the majority of their canned food in cases, so iIcan get out of Val's with a case of Friskies for under 12 bucks! In other words, more money for me to feed myself! Wow...this place is no joke! I've driven past Val's many times over the years growing up not far from here. Now that I'm all grown up, have 2 dogs and recently moved to the area, I wanted to check them out. I would much rather support a local business than a national chain. It also helps that the store is about 1 mile away from our house. There is no shortage of anything here. It is crammed with treats, food, beds, toys, everything and anything pet related. They even have squirrel food! (No way!) Of course, our dogs eat expensive chow due to food allergies and wanting to give them quality food. I was pleasantly surprised to find their pricing is competitive, and a few bucks less than what we normally spend! Staff was friendly and helpful. I noticed they had some carpet samples stacked for sale from $1-2 each. They weren't very big, but perfect for a small pet to lay on. One of my dogs loves laying on carpet, but she's too big for these pieces. I thought it was cool that they sold them at such a cheap cost. The only drawback is that they seem to have some pigeons hanging out in the parking lot. They're not moving anywhere fast, and I was concerned they'd get squished. I'm guessing these pigeons are fed by Val's staff if they go as far as stocking squirrel food! read more

I've only been coming here for about 6 months but the selection, layout, and prices are great. I like walking in and seeing a massive wall of reasonably priced bulk items like pigs ears, bones, and snacks. Prices are lower than most of the chain stores I've been to recently. As with most pest stores, they are pet friendly and have the snacks sitting at the register for pets, primarily dogs. I would happily give them no stars! Let me tell you about my Sunday visit! The pet supply store I normally go to was closed and while I was running other errands I passed this store. I decided to buy dog food there since they carried my brand and I was completely out. I walked in and wandered around for a bit before finding the food. As I was approaching my brand there was a young man stocking cans. He asked me if I needed help finding anything. I replied I was good I was just going to grab this big bag of dog food. He said "okay" and turns around and continued stocking cans. This kind of threw me off guard because I've never been in a store that didn't offer to carry my food for me. But um okay. No big deal, I'm a young, strong, independent woman and it's only 30lbs lol whatever. So I grab the bag and start heading to the cashier. Well I've got two dogs on leashes and you know dogs... they think it's a great time to Criss cross their leashes around my legs. I tried to step out of it but they really tied me up tight. I waddled to the cashier. There was a young girl and an older lady at the front. Both were on their phones. I set the bag on the counter and the girl got off her phone after a second and rang ya up. As if I wasn't already annoyed the dog food was $12 more than I normally pay. Unbelievable! She quietly accepted my payment then went back to her phone. No offer to have anyone help, no have a good day, nothing. Wow. So me and my $12 extra dog food waddled back out to the car. And you know what is the weirdest thing about this whole trip?! No one even acknowledged my dogs! I have two super cute dogs too (I get I'm biased being their mom, but they are REALLY cute! ) I can't believe I walked in and out of a pet store and not only did my dogs not get a treat, or a pet but not so much as a hi! I love that they are locally owned, their bulk treat section, their canned food selection, prices, and customer service. Poor customer service, lack of communication, and staff incompetency will keep me from going back. I went to Val's on a recommendation to try to deal with my cat's digestive issues. I was told they were knowledgeable and able to make good suggestions. So far so. I purchased a large bag of dry premium food with the understanding that food was guaranteed, and could be exchanged one time if the food did not work out. What I was not told at that time by their staff was - keep the bag. Two weeks later, I called to inquire about making a food exchange. A very nice young gal answered the phone, told me about the bag (which I did not have) and she further assisted me by asking the manager on duty if he could help. When the sales clerk came back to the phone, i was told that "the manager on duty agreed to take a loss. Bring in some of the food in a baggie and they would make an exchange." I told her I would come in three days, will this be any problem? No. I called Saturday to see if they had a specific food. Yes. Well, they don't. I drove all they way out there and all the way back home. After making another food choice, I drove all the way out there again. This time the store manager got involved. I was told that nobody told me that. They don't do that. If I don't have the bag, I'm not making an exchange, and I must have heard the word "policy" a dozen times while the manager interrupted what I was trying to say. What I was trying to say was that I understand the policy. I understand the reason for the policy. I was asking him for his help in determining which of his staff had assisted me over the phone on Friday, and could they call me. Again, the manager rattled off a sentence using the world "policy." I guess the answer was simply this. "No. I don't want to help you. No. I'm not going to help you. No. Nobody from here would have told you that. No. I don't care if you do post a negative review." I do understand the need for policy. I do not appreciate having my time wasted by being told inaccurate information (3 times) and then being treated rudely when I tried to get to the bottom of this. Was pleasantly surprised to see that prices were very competitive with any other retailer, online or otherwise. Now we just shop here and don't have to worry in advance about price or ordering in advance of actually running out. Plus there have been decent sales a few of the times I've gone in. Just thought I'd add my $.02 to balance out some of the other reviews which seem a little silly in my opinion. The bulk bins for treats are nice too - lots of selection. My first visit to this place was very positive. I came in with my dogs and one of the staff (appears to be a manager) came over to say hi to them and asked me if I needed anything. I did a little research in advance because I'm looking to switch dog foods and found that the food I wanted to buy is $7 cheaper a for the 35 lb bags at Val's than it is at Pet Supplies Plus on Woodward. Also Val's had the 6lb bags and Pet Supplies Plus did not, which is ideal for me because I don't want to buy a huge bag before knowing if my dog will eat it. Old school pet supply store. Beats all the chain stores hands down. Not bright and shiny like the large chain stores, they have a great variety of products at reasonable prices. When they were out of a product that I regularly purchase, they called and got it from their other store and had it for me in 2 days. They take credit cards, but don't make the mistake of paying with a $50.00 or $100.00 bill before noon. Even though I spent $35.00 and paid with a $50.00, I got a stern lecture and point to the sign near the register. I offered to pay with a credit card instead, but they somehow managed to find the $15.00 change. That was the only negative experience I've ever had there. read more

I have bought worms at Val's many times and once and awhile I got a bad container with many skinny dead worms and did nothing about it. Recently, I bought two containers of worms, a mere 5 bucks, on my lunch hour (I'm a teacher with a hungry classroom pet snake) and when I got back to work I found that both containers contained smelly dead worms. This time I was not going to dismiss it because I specifically asked the man to check them first and he said that he did. The real reason I am writing this is because when I went to take back the worms with my receipt, the young girl (said she was the closing manager) was rude and most disrespectful. She spouted that she was the closing manager but then in the next breath said she is not responsible for the worms. She LAUGHED in my face when I told her how it wasted my lunch hour, gas, time... I was so insulted! This is SUPPOSED to be a FAMILY run business but the FAMILY is NOT minding the store! My opinion is that they are NOT screening their help and the "pimple faced girl" that was supposably the closing manager does NOT have the integrity, maturatey, intelligence, or experience to work with the public. Huge selection and great prices. They don't carry Blue Wilderness, but they did carry almost everything else. The store is definitely dated, but that's also part of its charm. I've been going to Val's for years. Old school as it gets, and nothing wrong with that. They are very well spoken on products and friendly. My son has a picky eater cat and her food is only stocked at Val's. So Val's has served me through a generation of cat and dogs. A lot of pet stores have not been around long enough. AWFUL return policy for a heat light bulb, not to mention EXTREME rudeness of employees. I bought the bulb less than 2 months ago to have an extra on hand for my lizards. I actually just put the NEW bulb in a few weeks ago due to my other bulb going out. Well, the bulb I purchased (less than 2 months ago) didn't work. When I bought it, the lady at the register told me that if it didn't work I could bring it back to exchange, not get a refund, which I was OK with. After realizing it didn't work, I took it back thinking I was going to be able to exchange it (that was the reason I bought it to begin with...knowing I could exchange it). Well, I was told NO EXCHANGES AT ALL. I mentioned that the lady at the register at the time I purchased it said I could exchange it if it didn't work. The RUDE employee (I assume she was a manager) just kept shaking her head "No" saying "We don't exchange once the product has been opened." So that means I spent $8 on a light bulb that SHOULD last at least 6 months, but instead doesn't work at all?!?! I actually said that to her and all she did was nod her head and say "It's not my fault it doesn't work," in and EXTREMELY rude tone. Really?? It's not your fault?!?!?! Aren't you the one who owns the store that sold me a broken bulb?!?! If it's not your fault, then why not allow me to exchange it?!?! I seriously couldn't believe she said that to me, the customer!!!! After arguing for a few minutes about exchanging it, I could tell the (maybe) manager wasn't going to budge so I walked out and said I was never coming back. I have taken TONS of things back to stores and have NEVER, EVER been to a store/business where they don't at least exchange a damaged product. She was sooooo rude, right from the get go. I do not recommend this place. Another thing...there is a sign that she kept referring to that says once a product is opened, you can't return or exchange...well, I wonder how in the hell can one tell if a light bulb works unless they open the box and try it?!?! The lady was actually going to walk me back to look at the sign. That's when I said that I didn't need to see it and I will never come back. They need to wake up and realize this is 2013...businesses usually give refunds or exchanges for faulty products. They also need to make sure employees don't tell the customers that they can exchange things, because exchanging is obviously not allowed at this place. I'd like to add that this is not my usual place to get a bulb from, but it was convenient at the time. My usual place has ALWAYS exchanged faulty bulbs and have even given me my money back before!!
