My son had passed a month earlier, and I attempted to mail some sentimental objects to a Colorado friend, who never received them. I WAS NOT told I could get any free insurance on the package, which apparently is common to be given a minimal amount. I DO note the lady who accepted my small box was completely uninterested. Of course I kept the receipt for a long time. Probably still have it on my phone. After a time I was told it hadn't reached its destination. I called the store several times, was given a number to look my package up, not told such number would expire, and they would refuse me another!! I repeatedly tried, at one point being told the package would be returned to ME! It was NOT. I was given several phone numbers to call, none of which were answered, nor returned my messages, to the point when the message mentioned "take our survey" the phone hung up on me!! I even called UPS headquarters, they were so sorry! Somewhere there is a box with a white small Lego Plane, scowling Lego woman on the wing, with "coins" from CAP and a seaplane logo mug. When it's opened on a YT video, which should be illegal!, I alone know the backstory and puns that go with the items! The bitch of it is, I wouldn't have let these things go to anyone else, literally! Thank God I got my payment refund from the credit card!! Trying to repeatedly track a package with such a long list of small numbers was disheartening after my son's death. This place sucks. I never got any recompense at all.

That is exactly what I experienced on Tuesday, August 18, at The UPS Store located at 805 E Bloomingdale Ave in Brandon. I arrived at 6:29 p.m., precisely at closing time, carrying two simple Amazon returns. I did not need assistance, I was not making a purchase, and I was not asking anyone to begin a complicated transaction. I simply had two packages to drop off. The employee inside saw me approaching. And shut the door in my face. Literally. That is neither a figure of speech nor an exaggeration born of frustration. He saw me approaching the entrance and closed the door directly in front of me. He later opened it for another customer and, without even looking me in the eye, simply said that they were closed. No "I'm sorry." No "Good evening." No "What did you need?" Not even the most basic gesture of acknowledging that another human being was standing in front of him. I understand perfectly well what closing time means. I have worked in customer service for years, and I currently hold management responsibilities myself. That is precisely why I know the difference between enforcing business hours and behaving with a level of hostility and unprofessionalism that is simply incompatible with a customer-facing position. He could have told me that he was unable to accept the packages. He could have explained that the system had already been closed. He could simply have said, "I'm very sorry, sir, but we've just closed." Five seconds would have been enough. Instead, he chose to shut a door in a customer's face. And I use the word "chose" deliberately, because that is exactly what happened. Closing time belongs to store policy. Rudeness belongs to the individual. But when that individual is standing behind a counter, inside a store displaying a corporate name, dealing, or refusing to deal, with the people who come to its door, he is no longer representing only himself. He is representing The UPS Store. That is where the real seriousness of this incident lies. Large companies spend fortunes building a brand. They speak of trust, professionalism, service, community, and customer experience. They create manuals, train employees, develop advertising campaigns, and spend decades protecting their reputations. And it takes only one person behind one door to make all of that rhetoric meaningless. Because a brand is not what a company says about itself. A brand is what a customer experiences when no executive is watching. I do not know who hired this employee. I do not know who trained him. I do not know who supervises his performance. Nor do I know whether the behavior I witnessed was an exception or a pattern. But I do know this: if someone believes it is acceptable to deliberately shut a door in a customer's face, refuse even to make eye contact, and fail to offer five seconds of basic courtesy, then the management of this location should be asking itself a very serious question: Is this truly the person we want representing our name to the public? I manage people. I know that employees make mistakes. I know that people have bad days. I also know that no employee should be expected to remain at work indefinitely after the end of a shift. But I also know that there is an enormous difference between making a mistake and revealing an attitude. What I witnessed that evening was not a problem with a package. It was not a problem with Amazon. It was not even really a problem with closing time. It was a problem of attitude, judgment, basic courtesy, and an understanding of what it means to hold a customer-facing position. I can take two packages somewhere else. I can take my business there, too. And perhaps that is the point that should concern those responsible for this location most of all: If the person standing at the door makes the customer want to walk away and never return, then the problem is not on the side of the door that was closed. It is on the side of the person who chose to close it that way.
