I brought my 13-year-old golden retriever Dani in to Value Vet after discovering a large lump in her abdomen. Dr. Jeff recommended surgery, telling us he had done the same procedure on his own senior Labrador Retriever who went on to live for several more years. Trusting his confidence and experience, we agreed. She was dead within 24 hours. When I picked her up after surgery, she was heavily sedated and visibly distressed. There was no overnight monitoring offered or suggested. To make matters worse, Dr. Jeff came into the waiting room carrying the tumor in a large plastic bag -- visibly bloody, the size of a football -- and presented it proudly in front of everyone there. I was in shock over the state of my dog, and this was what he led with. It was deeply inappropriate and showed a stunning lack of empathy for what I was going through in that moment. In the middle of the night she began dry heaving and I had to call Dr. Jeff in a panic. His advice was simply to take her to an emergency hospital. She died shortly after. I understand that surgery always carries risk, especially in older dogs. What I cannot understand is why a 13-year-old dog was not kept overnight for monitoring after a major abdominal procedure. Or why the warning signs I witnessed weren't anticipated and planned for. Hindsight is 20/20, but my gut was telling me surgery was the wrong call. I ignored it because he was so confident and sure of himself. The idea he could buy us more time with her over rode my instincts. Please don't make the same mistake I did -- trust your instincts, and don't let a cocky bedside manner override your own better judgment. It's taken me years to share this experience - it has been one of the most traumatic of my life. I'm sharing it because I wish someone had shared theirs with me before I walked through that door. If your pet is elderly and facing a major procedure, please seek a second opinion before proceeding- and trust your gut above all else..... Dani was the best good girl and deserved a better ending- for that i will always be responsible.

    Tumor

Took my dog to have tumor removed and teeth cleaned and doctor said the tumor might be a bloody mess and couldn't guarantee my dog would make it this is when I had good insurance and credit cards. He also thought that my dogs lungs had been infected. I went away thinking my dog was a goner ( heartbroken) . Went a year later and he changed his tune now thinking there was some possibility but he couldn't guarantee her survival. Fast forward another eight months and she is still kicking and the thing holding her back is a large tumor which he didn't have the confidence to handle and now I am insurance less and on a fixed income faced with my dogs peril. Dr Werber is a big disappointment in my mind

I have to say, Dr. Davidson is one of the best vets in Los Angeles. He has cared for my pet for over 10 years. Has helped on off hours and truly cares. Caring and heart can go so far for someone else's belongs and life, but Dr. Davidson REALLY cares. I have a cavalier King Charles, the first time owning this breed and he has guided me and helped me along the way with understanding what this breed is genetically disposed to. My dog has a heart mur mur but he's on medication and doing amazing. He recently had a stroke out of no where which I rushed to the hospital trying to get answers waited 5 hours but they couldn't give me a diagnosis!! I left and then went to see Dr. Davidson and he told me in 5 minutes what was wrong with my dog. I am forever grateful for Dr. Davidson and he truly is a great man and veterinarian!

Are they letting people inside for appointments?

Yes. I was there in June and they were letting people in.

We have a male cat that's been straining and most likely has a blockage. He has insurance, but this incident registers as a previous condition. What is the cost of treating him, without insurance?

to give you an IDEA, i paid 2,691.63 for hospitalization/surgery for 3 days at VCA when my cat kept getting blocked (and draining wouldnt do anything on its own).

Do they accept walk ins or appointments only?

I walked in and was seen within 15 minutes

    How much is a checkup?

    It was $60

How long does it usually take if I only need shots for my puppy? (since it's walk in only)

On several occasions, I have been there and the technician has administered the shots very quickly without me having to wait my turn since it was not necessary to see the doctor. You would have to wait your turn incase you want to see the doctor and…

Does anyone know what time this place actually opens?

How much would a teeth cleaning cost for a 21lb, 9yrs old Maltipoo dog.

What's the average cost for X-rays?

$130 & up. Depending on how many views they need to take.

Roughly how much does the 4-in-1 vaccine cost for dogs? Thanks!

I called, you need to pay an extra of $40 for exam. You can't just get vaccines .

We kept coming back for the convenient location--until today. I arrived 15 minutes early for my dog's 2:30 PM appointment. At check-in, the front desk (Crystal) asked me to prepay, which was new to me. When I asked what services were included, she said only vaccines. I had previously requested microchipping a week ago, but that wasn't noted. She mentioned a 3 PM cancellation slot, but I told her to hold off since I couldn't stay much longer. After waiting over an hour, I asked a different tech about the delay. Then Crystal blurted she had moved my appointment to 3 PM to include all services--something she NEVER communicated; which I pointed out to her, I asked to speak with a supervisor and continued waiting. We were finally taken to a room, and 15 minutes later (total of 1hr 15min LATER) , the doctor entered and accused *ME* of being disrespectful to her staff--which is completely FALSE. I believe the front staff member BLATANTLY LIED to cover her own condescending and unprofessional behavior. I was upfront with the doctor and encouraged her to review the cameras. As a business owner myself, I know you never put a customer on the defensive--especially when your feelings are hurt because someone called out poor service. That's a training issue, not mine. This experience was not only upsetting but also makes me question how much the doctors enable their staff's mediocrity. The lack of communication, professionalism, and customer service is evident from the moment you walk in. I stand by my word: !!! review the cameras!!! I was never disrespectful--not once.

Dr. Kevin is a calming, reassuring presence, even via text. His compassion for these animals and their grieving owners is evident and genuine. I appreciated his further reassurance that it was the correct decision and at the right time when he saw the gravity of Xena's condition; I had no doubts, but it was still a balm to my heart to hear it from a professional. I was able to pet her throughout the entire procedure and up until the very last moment we assisted her onto the stretcher. I am so grateful I could spend those crucial final moments comforting her. We preferred communal cremation, so the rates were within the ballpark of other at-home services I had consulted with. However the stellar attentiveness, gentleness, and empathy that Dr. Kevin provided, in addition to his same-day availability on such short notice and all of the glowing reviews here, had my heart set on him from the beginning. Another reason we opted for him over other providers is because he is the one performing the procedure, so we knew what--and who--to expect. It felt much more intimate and personal than a service sending "someone" out. I believe this high caliber of care is how Dr. Kevin so seamlessly blends into the moment: he is another source of the palpable love resonating during such an intense, difficult experience. His demeanor was serene and respectful, and he allowed us plenty of physical and emotional space. Even as he was working, his being there felt as natural as any of my family members. Because I had to go to work/could not cancel, I opted to do the day after. The estimate at MASH is $6,000-8,000 but here it was around $4500. I dropped my cat off early on Wednesday for his check-up, test, and surgery. Ultimately, they disagreed with the vets at MASH and said my cat had no crystals either in x-ray or in his urinalysis but did have a UTI which contributed to a second blockage (bladder overflow). They kept him for 48-hours to unblock and recover. This cost around $2K. At MASH where he had done the same 2 days earlier, it was $6K When MASH returned my cat, he was rough. He reeked of pee, his face was completely crusted/sticky with dried medicine, his fur was full of shed, and he was lethargic and in pain despite all the medicines. When Affordable returned him, my cat was bright and energetic. They clearly took care of him (he smelled like a baby wipe). It has been about a week since I brought him home, but I knew immediately that he was feeling better the day I picked him up. Now, he has completely recovered. Back to flinging himself around and meowing at 4 am. I am incredibly grateful to this hospital for their responsiveness, flexibility, affordability, and the kindness they showed my cat. I was worried that I would end up losing my cat (I had paid nearly $7K at MASH and he wasn't better) if he blocked again, but Dr. Barrera said that I should "give my cat a chance." He said that it is what he would do if it were his cat. I'm grateful that I did because it saved him from unnecessary surgeries. My cat was seen by Dr. Forsythe and Dr. Barrera and they both were very kind and gentle with him. I do see what some reviews mean about their disorganization. They forgot to call me to update me that he wasn't getting the surgery but would need to be hospitalized. I had to call them, but it turned out that Dr. Forsythe had gotten very sick. He returned my call despite being audibly quite sick and given that my cat needed the hospitalization anyways (and he was fine), I can see how it slipped through the cracks. They seem to accommodate all kinds of emergencies as best as they can, so I think a little disorganization is totally ok. I do think Dr. Forsythe needs a new phone. It sounded like he was calling from a remote cabin or from a phone that fell off a cliff. I had to listen to the voicemail at max volume more than once. I will likely return again/switch my primary vet to this one because it is closer, cheaper, and I had a great experience. And apparently, my shy scaredy cat enjoyed the attention he received here. There are some more "affordable" vets but in terms of quality/expertise, this hospital is well worth the price. When I called around to vets in Los Angeles for cystotomy prices, Ambassador Dog & Cat Hospital were the only ones that actually do it (many don't update their sites) that are near me (don't have a car) and their estimated price was also the same $4500. They are also roughly the same prices of my long-time vet (Beverly Robertson, wonderful, estimated $4K for procedure) and especially after going to MASH, these prices might as well be pennies. CareCredit is accepted basically everywhere, but what's nice about this hospital is that they accept ScratchPay which is a god send for emergency vet loans. This hospital is in an old building, but is still very nice and clean. Maybe not as sparkling as a brand new facility, but on par with the vets I've gone to over my lifetime.
