The food was good and I'm sure this a happening spot in Van Horn, as it was pretty busy for a Monday night. One of those spots where the reviews did not meet expectations. Atmosphere was very loud. Service fair. Brought bread basket and just plopped it on the table with two plates underneath. And it didn't even come with real butter. Ordered drink special and it was sweetest (in a bad way) margarita I've ever had. Shared a salad and she didn't bring us a second plate. There was so much dressing and cheese on the Caesar salad it was hard to find the lettuce...even the croutons were soggy. We both ordered Filets but they looked like little sirloins and were tough and chewy. Not a good TX steak as promised. We were shocked by how great the food was at this little steakhouse! The sirloin was thick cut and cooked to perfection. It was hands down the best steak we have eaten in such a long time. We eat at steakhouses across the country very often as we travel for work weekly. The fresh cut green beans, roasted carrots and mashed potatoes were all great aswell. Nice place for families and travelers to get a good meal. Has a full bar in the center with two comfortable dining rooms to either side. Unobtrusive TV in the dining room was showing an NFL game with the sound off when I was there. Good local beer list (local includes Texas and New Mexico breweries) and a pretty large wine list. We had the hummus and veggies appetizer which was surprisingly delicious. The tortilla strip chips were fresh and warm, melted in the mouth. The hummus was also fantastic. The dish came with celery sticks and baby carrots as well. I had the pork chop that came with beans and macaroni salad. The pork was seasoned well and covered with sweet barbecue sauce. The meat was done perfectly. The chop was served with the bone attached like a handle which looked nice and was useful for holding up the last bits to be licked off. I thought the beans were good, maybe could have had more seasoning, and the macaroni salad was better than I imagined. A very good meal. Staff was friendly and attentive. Service was good. Ambiance was similar to a Denny's in the 80s. Our server was polite and friendly, albeit a little slow. She got our order wrong but fixed it. The food was comparable to tv dinners. The green beans, that I "upgraded" to for a charge, were from frozen and some were still cold. The rice was undercooked and full of crunchy pieces, with some veggies mixed in. The steak and chicken, while cooked properly, were both covered in way too much pepper. And the green chiles on the chicken were super spicy making it inedible (and I have a pretty high tolerance for spicy food.) The mashed potatoes had nice flavor. Forgetting it was Friday night and they'd be busy we just walked in and the young hostess was very friendly and did get us a table rather quickly. We decided to share a steak dinner but were shocked to hear they charge $5.95 for an extra plate. But the waitress gave us the baked potato to offset it. The steak came out perfectly cooked. There were some tough parts but the parts that weren't tough were very yummy. The char and flavor were delicious. Green beans were a little under cooked but other than that an over all good meal. They had karaoke going in the bar area which was ok. Would we go back?? Probably so not many choices in Van Horn. read more

Stopped in van horn for night after a day of driving. Since this seemed to be the only place to eat near my hotel I gave it a shot The place was busy since it was New Year's Eve but it was new years. The hostess appeared to be a little ruffled. She was young I think newer and my guess would be hadn't really dealt with a real busy night. That being said I was sat after about 30 min. I was excited to try this Texas steakhouse since I love a good steak. Now I will say me and wife go to a top end steakhouse at least once a year where we will pay upwards of $350+. This is my one indulgence. We have also tried all the bbq joints in Austin and other places. So I feel I'm a pretty good judge of steak. I got the ribeye med rare. It came with two sides and was only $29. I got a side salad that was only $5. Can't beat that price. I almost pay that for a prime rib eye at the store that I have to cook. The steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection. This was the best ribeye I've had outside of paying $90 for just the steak. The sides were also good. The garlic mash had good flavor but I wish they were creamier. I love steak fries so got those as well and they were great. And the side salad was solid. It comes with a chipotle ranch. Had to finish off with apple cobbler and it was great. Now this isn't a culinary journey but for the price you get a good meal and a very good steak. Highly recommend. read more

I have mixed emotions about our first experience here. While the presentation was decent, the meal took almost 45 minutes to receive after ordering. Our steaks were undercooked. Both were blue rare which doesn't bother me usually but we both ordered flat iron steaks. Not cooking them to 130 guaranteed a tough steak. The steaks were both under seasoned severely again a big issue on flat iron steaks. The mash potatoes were very good however as were the green beans. My girlfriend had asparagus which was overcooked and she felt may have been to mask they were seemingly going bad. The cheese cake we had for desert was ok but over priced. With an around 17% tip our bill was a few cents shy of $100. I don't mind paying even more if the meal was god and I frequently do. This was not...I am not sure if the rating was from people in the rating not knowing what a good place is with few places to choose from or if we caught it on an off night. I have hoped it was an off night for the steak chef. The glass of wine seemed as if the bottle had been opened far too long. I am also guessing they don't serve very much. We may try again if we visit the area. The waiter was attentive and nice. The atmosphere was relaxed and they recommended chicken fried chicken ect. Maybe higher end isn't there forte which isn't a problem but know that going in. I think based solely on this experience it's around a 1.5 to 2 stars at best. From reading other reviews this may be about par for them. The good reviews may just never have eaten from a nicer location. read more

YUMMY MEATS! We were intrigued by all of the Christmas lights on the outside. This place was so busy! Staff was working so hard and running around. Margarita was good. I really enjoyed my burger, it was juicy and the accompanying sweet potato fries were crisp. I don't like that they charge for ranch on the side though! Van Horn is terribly lacking in restaurants and the ones that are open tend to be fast food, pizza etc. or closed on the weekend when we are traveling thru town. I went to this restaurant with the intent of ordering to take away and they wouldn't even take my order because they had just sat a large family (8 or so) and said the kitchen couldn't handle my order. No one else was seated... I think how this could have been handled better is telling me the wait would be long and have me take a seat at the bar while waiting on my order. After tip, it was 77 dollars. I feel price was over the top. Rib eye was market price but wherever they are buying their meat, they or we are getting ripped off. My wife and I came into dinner tonight at your restaurant. It was for a romantic date night dinner as we just traveled five hours cross-country. We heard great things about you, so we came inside. Just the two of us sat down. That's when your the 10 top came in. We moved to another table, then it began. The birthday party began and that cute little boy just yelled and talked as loud as he could. None of his family cared but what bothered me was the manager didn't care one bit about the other guest in the whole restaurant. We should have moved to the other side like we saw one couple do or just walked out but I knew you would not let this behavior go on all through your main dinner service. I was wrong. NO ONE DID ANYTHING. And the "Manager" was working the 10 top. It was horrendous. It was crazy. All your guests were in there being abused and we're all just looking at each other. We only could lasted 30 minutes and we had to go. No desert just wanted to leave out of the yelling room as we were both so stressed. You destroyed the night for us, and upset others at the least. We said something to our server twice. You were working the table, so I know you heard it. It was a disaster. It was an absolute disaster, and then we left. We paid and quickly walked outside. I told my wife " OK, let's try to make something good out of this. " We walked inside your ice cream parlor. We waited. There was no one there. We waited...I'm yelling. out Hello. I'll look at the kitchen window and see your staff on the other side of the kitchen. Then we hear a noise. . The person is probably in the bathroom, and guess what? I know you live for your local community and that's what should be done. But what about everyone being a guest? A manager must be able to say something to your other guest if they are disrupting the entire room. We watched your other guests getting disturbing too but to just let them go on like that, like I said, you ruined our date night. We were planning on coming back for a nice steak dinner before we leave but thats not going to happen now. Our server was nice but she too was over whelmed my the commotion. Came here passing through town. Got the shrimp cocktail and they tasted like coffee. I can't explain it, it was odd. I ordered the pork chop and it was so dry I could barely eat it. My daughter hated her burger, the branding on the bun made the whole thing taste burnt. Everything was so bland. Van Horn is a small town of 2,000 so there aren't many restaurants to choose from. We were just passing through. We found this place on Google maps so decided to give it a chance. The good: The restaurant is clean, lots of space and not too loud. I am hard of hearing so I have trouble in a noisy restaurant. The food was good and the prices reasonable. I had the filet mignon and it was cooked medium rare and not tough and the portion filled me up. My wife and our friend also enjoyed their dinners. The not so good: The staff was polite and efficient but they were not friendly. Our server came by a couple times but wasn't really attentive as in good restaurants. I noticed when locals came in that the staff called them my name, were all smiles and checking on them constantly. I think when you run a public restaurant that you should treat everyone kindly and provide the same level of service. I made sure to note the difference in service on my tip. Also, be sure to read the fine print on the bill they give you. Most people pay by credit card, it's the usual way to do business. When we got our final bill we noticed the bill was higher than the initial one presented. When we asked they pointed to the fine print which stated that if you pay by cc they will add a "non cash adjustment" of 3.5%. This is what the cc companies charge them for their services. I hate establishments that do this. This is part of their doing business. If they hate it so much they should raise their prices by 3.5% to cover that cost. If I had seen this before I gave the tip I would have taken the 3.5% off the tip. This is a great place for locals, but if you are just passing through please pass them by. read more

I have never given this place anything but a five but slightly disappointed that the 12 oz Ribeye steak that my husband and i ordered was tough and dry. The first time in all our visits here that we have had this issue. Saying that this place does EVERYTHING ELSE RIGHT!!!!!! The service is GREAT!!!!! The staff is warm and inviting.
