This outpost of Van Leeuwen is a cozy little spot in a convenient location next to the G train. I would say something about their coffee, but alas, I do not drink coffee. I would say something about all of their flavors, but alas, every time I get their ice cream (here, their truck, their other lovely locations), I get the cinnamon. The thing is, I would come here even if all they offered was the cinnamon flavor. You should come here and try it. With some fresh whipped cream on top. I am glad it is not too nearby me, as I would constantly be purchasing pints of said cinnamon ice cream, and my bank account would drift towards emptiness while my belly filled with creamy goodness. *They do package some of their flavors and sell them at Whole Foods in Union Square. I do not recommend buying those, though, because while it may cost a tiny bit less than from their own shop, it comes with a nutrition label and then you realize you're getting 2 days worth of saturated fat by finishing a pint in one sitting. read more

If you're a pistachio ice cream freak like me then you'll get your freak on when you have Van Leeuwen's pistachio ice cream. This is the real deal folks. We're talking green, like real pistachios (not bright green like chain brands) and it's not overly sweet and it takes like real pistachios. You can tell they use the good stuff in this. It's addictive. All there other flavors are great, you can't go wrong but I think the standouts are the Mint Chip (really minty and dark chocolate) and Pistachio flavors. This is one of the few ice cream establishments that truly gets it. The ice cream flavors are true to their flavors and are not masked but artificial flavors or an absurd amount of sugar. The ginger flavor has real ginger pieces and I think you can get a caffeine kick off of the coffee flavor. I like pistachio since it really captures in subtle essence of pistachio which is not a very sweet flavor. Their cones aren't too sugary either and they do have vegan flavors. The BEST strawberry ice cream I have ever tasted! I was smooth and creamy and had lots of real strawberry taste. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water! You can definitely taste the freshness of the ingredients they use in their ice cream. It's light and not too sweet. All of their flavors are amazingly good. I always try to convince my husband to let me get seconds when we come here. Their chocolate and giandujia (chocolate hazelnut) packs a lot of flavor. Delicious and interesting selection of flavors. - Honey comb cereal ice cream is pretty bomb. - Earl Grey tea ice cream is also pretty bomb. - Mint ice cream for mint lovers -- they did not let me down. - they have vegan ice cream selections - gluten-free cookies (I'm gluten intolerant so I felt this was important to mention) - price is decent, but it's not Baskin Robbins. - Not a big place and it has weird waves of being totally crowded and then suddenly not crowded. - Ambience is tasteful if you like peace and ice cream. - they have tea and I think they put tea leaves in their own tea bags. I love tea and I love ice cream. - it's ice cream and it's delicious and it's in a pretty hip area full of well-dressed hipsters - there is a cool little dance hall/pub across the street. Very small place and lines can get out of hand. They do now accept cash just FYI. Ice cream was not very tasty, I had the classic salted caramel and it just tasted edible not really yummy and not awful. My daughter can have dairy and she had the vegan cookie dough ice cream and there really was no dough in it and it just tasted like pure and overpowering coconut. I have had vegan ice cream in a lot of places and this was awful. She barely ate it and I felt bad. Overpriced for no reason. read more

The changes to my block keep coming. In a supremely savvy move, the people behind the wildly popular Van Leeuwen artisanal ice cream truck, which in the summer commands a DMV-worthy line down Bedford Ave., have finally opened a storefront parlor in the space adjacent to the also wildly popular Manhattan Inn. I can see the jaunty yellow signage from my bedroom window, and it's a sight that causes a unique mixture of childish glee and weary resignation at all the extra time I'll have to spend at the gym from now on. Surprisingly, the parlor wasn't that crowded when I finally visited today, although with only three or four tables, it doesn't take much to fill it up. The little space is pretty plainly by the same people who did Manhattan Inn. In addition to the excellent ice cream, they also serve Intelligensia coffee, which I love and usually buy in bulk to make at home. Glad to be able to pick it up so close to my place. I made my way here and opted to go with a simple cup of ice cream filled with two flavors, espresso and chocolate. The two were a perfect match, equally delicious. The espresso ice cream tasted like it was just brewed, and the chocolate was divine, neither too rich nor too sweet. I'm a fan! At the moment, very much into the mint chip ice cream, which is just the right amount of mint and lots of yummy thin chocolate bits. Over the summer, it was honeycomb, so crunchy and oozy honey, you'll be left wanting more. A couple years back, I couldn't get enough of the pistachio, which is that real pistachio taste. They source good ingredients. The location is tiny, yet mighty. I love the benches outside, which are strategically placed a bit raised and a part of the store. I love the open windows feel. Oh! I believe her name was casey (forgive me if I'm wrong) but she was amazing and held great conversation and perfectly blended my matcha latte (which is to die for). 10/10 would recommend. I am incredibly in love with all (okay, most) sweet things. I grabbed a cone from here after dinner last night for the first time. Im not a huge ice cream or frozen yogurt fan, but I needed a sweet fix. I got the ginger flavor, because I am obsessed with ginger. It was perfect. Van Leeuwen means serious business when it comes to ice cream. It is definitely as good as it gets in my books. The flavor options are usually simple, nothing too fancy or creative, but always tastes exactly the way you'd expect each flavor to taste. The texture is just right as well -- firm so that you can actually bite into it (if that's your kinda thing), but not too hard like it's got freezer burn, and yet soft and creamy, but not to the point where your ice cream is handed to you as just cream. Some shops/brands pride themselves on making the creamiest ice cream, but ends up being way too creamy, almost to the point of sticking to the roof of your tongue like peanut butter. You won't get that here. I've tried their various flavors in the past, but during my most recent trip, I ordered an affogato, which is normally served as a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass of a fresh espresso shot. I opted for the earl grey ice cream instead of vanilla and that thing blew my mind...apart from my taste buds. The earl grey tasted as if one brewed a quality cup of earl grey with just the right amount of condensed milk and then popped it in the freezer. The taste and texture was on point. 10 out of 10. Not only that, but the flavors from the earl grey and the espresso meshed really well together, giving a smooth and rich taste and consistency, while still being able to taste the individual flavors of the ice cream and the espresso. In terms of interior decor, it's simple, yet an understated type of fun and classy. Also despite the small space, a decent use of space (but don't count on finding seats if you're bringing in a larger crowd and/or visiting on a Friday night or weekends). I would hope that their other locations offer just as tasty treats as this one, if not better. Otherwise, I am a big fan of Van Leeuwen's and I love bringing friends and family here, especially if they're visiting from out of town. read more

This place was recommended by a server at The Lobster Joint. I am glad we came here. I had trouble deciding which flavor of ice cream I wanted. I went with the pumpkin cheesecake. It did not disappoint. I loved the pieces of crust in the ice cream. My niece had the mint chocolate chip with sprinkles, and it was out of this world. If I do come back, I'm going to try to attempt the ice cream sandwich. It looked delish, but was too big since I had just eaten dinner. read more
