Lots of vegan flavors but how good are they? I sampled all the flavors and decided to go with both the pistachio and the mint chocolate chip. The vegan pistachio ice cream is made of of real pistachio - no fake green flavoring so you will get a true pistachio taste. As for the mint chocolate chip, you will taste real mints - also no fake green mint flavoring. I love that they use real ingredients and that the texture is creamy but I prefer a different milk base. Overall, there's more Van Leeuwen joints around so if you ever want vegan ice cream, I suggest coming here. read more

I got sick from the cold brew. Yes, sick, from coffee. How? Well upon my first sip of coffee, an object resembling a fatty tumor was sucked up the straw into my mouth and almost swallowed. I instantly gagged and spit the object into my hand and brought it back Van Leeuwen. The extremely nice employee was puzzled and could not identify the glob. I take my coffee black so all that should be in the cup is ice and coffee. After trying to figure out the source for a bit I'm fairly certain it was a piece of mold from the unsanitary ice machine that they constantly leave the ice scooper in - a health code violation. My cold brew was replaced and I was given vouchers for two free scoops of ice cream. I don't eat ice cream. The rest of the day I was extremely nauseous with a headache. I don't enjoy slamming a local business on the cesspool that is yelp, but Van Leeuwen failed to provide insight into what the foreign object was (I left it with the employee to investigate further). and refuses to answer emails so they obviously dont give a fuck. Got 2 scoops of the vegan flavors: turmeric palm sugar cookie and the butternut squash with brown sugar pecan cookie. OMG!!! So good. I was so happy. The butternut squash was a special (perhaps for the fall season?) and really tasty with the cookie chunks. The turmeric was different with mild turmeric flavor (enough to not completely turn anyone off) - combined with palm sugar cookie- it was a match made in heaven. Staff was super friendly too. Attentive customer service and genuine attempt to help make your visit a good experience. I questioned many flavors and sampled a few.. wasn't trying to be difficult but just wasn't sure because some of the names were unusual flavors I'd never tried. A line had already formed behind me and everyone was courteous. I'm normally not in Greenpoint but it's a very friendly neighborhood. read more

Went to this location with a few friends during the weekend. I have to say the service was very quick and easy. The worker was very nice and super sweet. She let me try samples and I fell in Love with the vegan options from the ice cream to the toppings. Recommend this to anyone who has dairy allergies you should have to miss out . read more

This was by far my favorite ice cream spot until today. I paid 9 dollars for two scoops of ice cream that looked like half a scoop each and kept falling off my cone. I also asked for mint chocolate chip and got matcha instead. Ice cream is yummy thou. read more

Yes, I'm the girl who would eat ice cream while walking outside even when it's less than 50 degrees. So when I found myself in Greenpoint aka no train land, and realized that the Van Leeuwen store was right off the Nassau stop on the G (yes, this was my 1st time ever on the G line) I had to go in and get a scoop. On a cone of course. I've had their ice cream before from their trucks and have always liked it. Granted it is pricey. But it is every bit the artisan ice cream they claim to be. And they at least give you a proper scoop unlike Grom. It's rich, smooth, and creamy. I like the currants and cream, the mint chip, and the gianduja flavors. Added bonus? The guy who was managing the counter was cute and spoke with a cute accent. ;-) read more

They have some cool flavors (which sell out quick), but the basic flavors disappointingly taste like any generic ice cream. The customer service is pathetic. I've never walked out of there with my actual order. Once I had to repeat my order four times, paid for a waffle cone with sprinkles, but got a cup and no sprinkles - and ice cream that tastes like Breyer's. And this was on a slow night. And they're way overpriced. read more

it's hard to give good ice cream anything but 5 stars! after a satisfying meal nearby, our sweet tooth's were calling. Van Leeuwen was only a few or so blocks away and though it was crowded, the line was not too long by the time we got there. for nostalgias sake, i went for the Vegan Mint Chip. It was luscious! the chips were actual chips and not chunks, with little flecks of chocolate scattered throughout. the mint flavor and sweetness level were perfectly balanced. . . and creamy! soooooo good! my dear got the Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, three scoops on a cone. it was towering! we savored silently, but when i finally asked him if he liked his cone, he said, "mmmmmm mmmm". in retrospect, though, he thought the ice cream was a little heavy on the coconut flavor of the milk and lacked the peanut butter he expected. all in all, pretty great experience. would go back. read more

Omg: the toasted coconut blondie!!! I was so excited to try vegan ice cream. The regular flavor that I had originally wanted was sold out but then I saw Toasted Coconut Blondie and it just sounded so different. Finger-lickin awesome Earl Grey Tea & Gianduja ice cream!!! I'm a HUGE fan of ice cream.. I mean, who DOESN'T love ice cream? But this place was on a whole different level. I've tried earl grey tea flavored ice cream at other fancy ice cream places before, but this place topped them all. I've never even heard of gianduja until I stepped into Van Leeuwen and OMG! It reminded me of.. NUTELLA! I wiki'd gianduja and found out it's "sweet chocolate containing about 30% hazelnut paste." I'd like to call it nutella ice cream since I don't know how to properly pronounce gianduja. Shame on me. YOU WON'T REGRET GETTING EARL GREY TEA & GIANDUJA! Just get those two (it's $4.50 for a small cup - you can get up to two flavors). You'll thank me later. read more

This place is so good that you will skip the dessert at a restaurant. I've order a few times here either to go or to stay. If you need to go, I'd order a pint and it will last you a few days. I always end up tasting a new flavor and ordering their vanilla anyways. Their vanilla has complex notes which probably has to do with their extract process with the vanilla beans from Papua New Guinea! read more

Condensed version: Their ice cream is BANGIN'. Detailed version: I ordered one scoop of earl grey tea and one scoop of sea salt caramel. My bf ordered the strawberry and gianduja (Rich chocolate with hazelnut: Nutella-esque flavor). The earl grey stole my heart. It tasted like a strong yet creamy and delicious cup of tea. The sea salt caramel had the perfect balance of sweet and salty. The gianduja was amazing! It was decadent with tiny pieces of hazelnuts you can taste in every bite! The strawberry was also pretty good, nothing too special. A little pricey than most ice cream shops (based on the scoop size) but their frozen goods are top quality. The store as a whole is very tiny -we almost missed it looking for it at night! They have other offerings such as baked goods, espresso drinks, and tea, as well as typical ice cream parlor treats-- sundaes, shakes, etc. PS: They have vegan options for their ice cream! read more

I really love little places like this. The ice cream tastes so simple and delicious. I ordered the salted caramel on a cone and the flavor was a perfect mixture of sweet and salty. It is a little pricey at $5+ for a small cone and additional cost for vegan ice cream. I was also disappointed that the cones seemed like bulk order, every day cones you could find at your local grocery store. For such great ice cream it deserves a higher quality cone! But don't be discouraged! With so many great food spots around, this ice cream spot is perfect for that dessert on the go you're looking for! read more

My favorite ice-cream spot. After Screamer's pizza-a vegan pizza spot right next door- I always come to finish the meal with vegan ice cream. Every time I come the line is out the door. Which is how you know it's sooo good. But even when you get to the front of the line if your undecided or want to try a bunch of flavors they never rush you. The staff is super friendly and the place just looks super chill and relaxed. Today I tried planet earth and dark matter. The flavors were so new and interesting but of course tasty. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to try out vegan ice cream. Could also be a cute date spot. read more

Best vegan ice cream I've ever had. They make it with cashew milk, which makes it creamy and decadent. I salted caramel, dark chocolate, and banana nut with cacao nibs on top. A little pricey, but hey, it's NYC and what isn't? Wish this was in Boston, because I would go here all the time! They have unique flavors and amazing ice cream. I would say 3.5 stars just bc they offer both vegan and milk based ice cream. I had a double scoop cone with honey comb and their featured flavor of coffee mocha. The coffee mocha flavor was my favorite it was slight bitter with chewy spiced cookie pieces. I could easily eat a pint of it. My friend had the cookies and cream and it was very underwhelming. Also they offer a 3 mini scoop sundae with 3 toppings which sounds appealing but very misleading. Its just a single scoop of one ice cream in a cup with the 3 topping of your choice. Overall not my favorite ice cream spot but still worth a try. read more

Van Leeuwen's honeycomb ice cream is inarguably incredible. It's where textural perfection meets burnt caramel with a hint of Crunchie bar. I mean, there's like 1/100 of a Crunchie bar per scoop, but I'll take what I can get. Everything else was too sweet and bland, but still texturally impressive. Plus, there's a substantial vegan selection (and a paleo flavor--rarity points!) Unfortunately, the cones are an abomination... they don't even work *carefully licks a teaspoon of melted ice cream off own arm.* Service was half-good, half-evil. Take your chances. Honeycomb or bust. read more

The ice cream is great, but the service is absolutely awful. I remember when Van Leeuwen first started off as an ice cream truck parked on Bedford Avenue and their staff was always super friendly. Customer service is important and their service has truly hit rock bottom. I went in tonight at about 10:40pm and prior to venturing out to Van Leeuwen, I called to make sure they were open. The girl that answered the phone was polite and said "yes, we close at 11pm". When myself and 3 others arrived, the polite tone disappeared. We tried to order milkshakes and that was a "no I cleaned the machine". It's just a blender, but okay. Then we tried to order a sundae and that was "no I can't do hot sauce, I cleaned it already". The next thing that followed was "well um we do close at 11". I know you close at 11, I specifically called to make sure you were open. Why wasn't any of this mentioned over the phone? Meanwhile, the girl towards the back says "we can make root beer floats" while holding a bag of garbage.... but before she could even finish her sentence subject A at the counter says "No we can't". Very professional- one person says one thing, the next says another. I also ordered a scoop on a cone and it came in a cup. I double checked the screen before paying. Subject A- "no this is what you said.. CUP". I said "I'm sorry I thought I double checked that it said cone". Instead of taking the scoop and putting it on a cone, she literally slapped the cone on top of the icecream cone in the cup. I understand bad days. I understand working in food service.... but I was also with a child. I don't believe that's the professional way to behave. If you hate your job, I get it but don't take it out on customers. If a child says you have no manners... then you really have no manners. My group wasn't even the only one to experience this... the group of a few gentlemen before us dealt with the same nonsense before a few of them decided not to get anything at all. We should have followed in their footsteps. The icecream is damn good... but for premium prices, the service should atleast be decent. On top of that, they don't accept cash.... but you can tip them in cash. Noted. read more

Hole in the wall! Cute decor and they have complimentary water. I went there to get the earl gray tea ice cream. Which is amazing !!! It's not like other ice cream parlors, so I didn't know if I could ask to sample them. I wish I knew you can!! And you can get two flavors in a regular cone, too. Will definitely go back to try the ginger and all the other flavor they have :) read more

This - and all the other locations - are a dream come true. It's by far the best vegan ice cream I've ever had. This location is particularly amazing because it's right next to the best vegan pizza I've ever had. All the vegan flavors I've tried are amazing - though I think my favorite is the chocolate chip cookie dough. Only issue is if you come in the late evening, even in the dead of winter, many of their selections are sold out. But it's only because it's so goddamn good. So if you have a vegan friend or lover and want to take them on the sweetest, cutest, best date of their lives.. start at Screamers for a slice, then head here for a cone. Absolutely amazing. read more

I like the look of this ice cream shop, it has wooden walls and seats with white lettering. I ordered two vegan scoops: dark chocolate and salted caramel; They were both really good. The price was $8 which is a lot for two ice cream scoops. They sell pints to stores and I noticed them at the Park Slope Food Coop and I also noticed that they are sold at Riverdel. It was nice to try them out before I bought a pint of it, but I would definitely not purchase them here again when a pint costs less for more. When my friend and I walked in, there wasn't a long line probably three people ahead of me. When we were on the bus (15 mins after), we noticed there was a line going outside of the door so I guess this place is pretty popular. read more

I had the plant earth vegan ice cream on sugar cone with sprinkles! It was super good but I will not get the sprinkles next time because they are really hard, not the soft easy to bite ones. Also I got an espresso, but it was burnt and tasted a little sour. They may need to recalibrate their coffee machine. The staff was really nice and helpful! I'll go back for sure!! read more

Love this place! Ice cream is always on point, and the staff is always so welcoming and super friendly! My go-to ice cream shop! Gets crowded, but it's not surprising, considering how great it is. Their Earl Grey, Pistachio, and Honey Comb are bomb! Strawberry is always great, especially during strawberry season. They have a special flavor called Royal Wedding Cake, which is also amazing! It's kind of like a lemon cake, but in ice cream.. I also go there for their coffee. They use Toby's, which is a local fave. read more

The best, creamiest, realest ice cream out there. I try a couple different flavors but always end up going with vanilla, topped with hot fudge. You can't beat it. I also appreciate the environmental consciousness of the business, with compostable cups and utensils. OH!- And they're open til 12 midnight. Winner all around! read more

The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I wasn't like blown out of this world by the ice cream. But, it is pretty fucking delicious. Came here on a Sunday afternoon with folks in town on a visit. Waited in line (because this place obviously rocks...and there is only one person working). Did not disappoint. The flavor combinations of the 5 or 6 simple, whole ingredients (non vegan classic flavors) were so satisfying, creamy, and richly aromatic that me and my guests felt compelled to sit down in the cute wood labeled bench sectionals and relish the experience. Props to the super nice guy working the counter and scooping the ice cream too. A very chill and flavorful first visit. read more

Super disappointed with this location. I've had Van Leeuwen before, and it was a really good experience, but I wasn't too sure if the fact the ice cream was vegan was worth paying a premium for. I decided to come to this location to give it another try, and I unfortunately my suspicions were confirmed. I decided to get 2 scoops of vegan ice cream - the planet earth, and the matcha. I've had the matcha before and I knew it was tasty. I decided to get a cone, and I wanted the scoop of planet earth on top for a nice Instagram picture. Vegan ice cream is a bit extra, so after that and the cone, my ice cream came out to $8 (which is absolutely ridiculous for 2 scoops of ice cream even Chinatown Ice Cream factory isn't that bad). After I paid, the worker informed me that the planet earth was "too soft" and she would not be able to put it on top. They asked me if I wanted the ice cream in a bowl instead and they could stick the cone in top. I was a bit taken aback because I already had in mind what I wanted the ice cream to look like, and the solution they proposed was stupid. Call me a whiny millennial #firstworldproblems, but if you have PROBLEMS WITH YOUR ICECREAM you inform your customers BEFOREHAND, not AFTER they paid. I asked them if I could get a refund, and they said no, so I just said fuck it and went with whatever they proposed. The thjng I received was an abomination, with a scoop of matcha on the bottom, with a scoop of planet earth on top (which held its shape so I have no idea what they were talking about) and the ugly ass cone sticking out on top. The cones here aren't even that tasty - literally the only reason I asked for it was the picture, PLUS the cone was extra. While the ice cream here is decent (planet earth has nice chunks of matcha cake which I enjoyed), this is not even close to amazing ice cream. If you want normal dairy ice cream, go somewhere else. There is literally ZERO reason to come here for regular ice cream because other places do it better and the flavors are not unique to this chain. I know my review will not deter the vegans at all because they have limited options to get vegan ice cream in the city but this is far from the best. The ice cream is just okay and NOT WORTH the premium. The service I received was super disappointing. read more

Specialties

We make everything from scratch using the absolute best ingredients and never any filler gums or stabilizers. For our classic ice creams, we use grass-fed milk & cream from local farms, pure cane sugar, and lots of organic egg yolks. We also make all our own add-ins from scratch (cakes, cookies, crumbles, jams, swirls) right (here) in Brooklyn. Our vegan ice cream is made with house-made raw cashew milk, organic coconut cream, extra virgin coconut oil, pure cocoa butter (the fat from chocolate), and organic cane sugar.

History

Established in 2008.

Our founders Ben and Pete Van Leeuwen and Laura O'Neill started Van Leeuwen out of scoop truck in 2008. Pete and Ben had driven old school ice cream trucks as a summer job, then one day Ben was standing in front of Mr Softee truck in NYC and thought "huh, why doesn't anyone serve great ice cream from trucks?" The idea was born that day, and the trio set out on making the purest, delicious ice cream they could without the use of gums, fillers, and stabilizers, and using only the best ingredi- ents possible. We now have stores and trucks in New York City and Los Angeles

The place simply has one of the best storefronts on Manhattan Avenue. Don't get us wrong, we never want the Polish mom & pop shops to go, especially the restaurants that provide the real taste of Poland cooking, but this place invites us in every single day. The casement windows and 24-hour door ajar reel you in because it is as if there is no separation between the street and the ice cream counter. Even though there is minimal room and only three tiny tables Van Leeuwen still manages to give off the greatest energy. This coffee and ice cream stop shows you that no matter how much space you have in NYC, you can still make it work to your advantage. People come, drink, eat, and go, and then the next crowd strolls in. A banquette faces a mirror menu of ice-cream sandwiches and a festive painting of an ice-cream truck. One can come here for Intelligensia coffee with a cheddar and onion scone in the am, or later for a banana split or root beer float (Virgil's Root Beer) with their famous Artisan Ice Cream (twelve flavors to choose from). After sampling probably the entire display, I settled for a "small" cone, two generous scoops of maple oreo pancake and brown bread ice cream, respectively. Attacked the free sprinkles on the side three times (i.e. got up three times to smother my ice cream in rainbow sprinkles) and felt like a really pro kid at a candy store doing it. The interior was spacious but because we went later in the evening, most of the seats were put up, so we had to eat our froyo standing. They have a variety of flavors and you can sample as many as you want. I ended up getting their original tart with fruit and some other toppings. The price was pretty reasonable. Nothing crazy, but it was a fun spot to check out!

The Purell machine is always full & all the staff make sure no one reuses the sample cup from 1 machine to another.
