Do not take your pet to get spayed or neutered here. It cost our 7 month old puppy her life.

The doctor fit us in first thing in the morning. He was beyond kind and knowledgeable while caring for our very sick little puppy. The office staff was likewise super kind and accommodating. I wish I could say that despite Dr. Hein's inflated ego and grating personality, he did an exceptional job taking care of my pet. On Saturday, my cat Lucy came to me with a hole near the base of her tail, near the anus. The hole was not, in fact, the anus itself, nor any hole that had existed since her birth. No, it was a gaping, open wound seeping with blood and gunk. As any hysterical pet owner would do, I called my vet's emergency line. "That's not an emergency," Dr. Hein said. "Just put a warm compress on it and bring her in on Monday morning." As instructed, I brought her in on Monday. It took a solid hour to be seen, all while Lucy (understandably) screamed in protest, stuck in her kennel. When my blissful suffering in the waiting room had ended, I naively wandered into a different level of Hell that was the examination table. Dr. Hein came in, glanced at the foreign hole, and said that it "should be fine" and that it'd be better to let it heal naturally. He was far more concerned about her weight loss. Within two minutes of my appointment, he rattled off feline leukemia, parasites, and AIDS as possible reasons for her weight loss prior to any data, and chastised me for not noticing her condition. My cat is an indoor cat and only in contact with my other cat, and both have been tested for leukemia and parasites prior to coming into our home. Perhaps it was a baneful spirit that cursed my house with the plague? I don't know. I'm also not a priest. I agreed to the blood tests, then left. He called six hours later to say that my cat has a hyperthyroid issue. Thanks. Real glad he figured out it wasn't literal AIDS. Presuming I'd be getting my cat back upon arrival, Dr. Hein brought her over to me, only to pause as he noticed the hole in Lucy. The one the appointment was about. The hole in which Lucy had. Lucy's hole. During the weekend, I was a helicopter parent and prevented Lucy from yanking out her fur near the wound. When I dropped her off, one would have to gaze deeply at her rear to find it. When I came to pick her up, I was shocked that not only was there fresh blood covering her butt, but she also didn't have a cone on her head. In a span of six hours under his care, my dumb little baby dug at the hole so deep, she pierced into her own abdomen. "Oh," he said. "This is much deeper than I thought. I wonder if she's able to defecate, or if this wound injured her rectum?" He then mentioned that I "better hope" her rectum wasn't ruined, else it'd be major surgery that apparently involved snapping her tiny, little pelvis in twain. The recommendation was to put her under so he could irrigate the area and make sure Lucy could take proper kitty dumps. "If the rectum is damaged, it's definitely going to get infected." For those of you keeping score, there have been several instances where Dr. Hein could've prevented unneeded suffering of this animal had he not spent his time talking down to me for ineptitude (ironic) and actually dealt with the issue I was concerned about in the first place. Instead, he told me that it wasn't an emergency, barely looked at the hole while listing terrible diseases Lucy didn't have unrelated to the hole and how I was stupid for not realizing this, ran some tests and found a thyroid issue while letting Lucy sit for six hours with nothing but time on her hands and teeth to bite the hole with, and hand the cat over to me only to then notice that there was, in fact, a goddamn hole in this goddamn animal. On top of all this, he painted the task of working extra hours to deal with this hole as inconvenient for him. The only saving grace here are Dr. Hein's nurses, who showed far more care and compassion than I think he's capable of. They're absolute saints for putting up with him, and I wish them the best. So unless you have a degradation fetish and are also apathetic to the fate of your pet, I would not recommend visiting this vet whatsoever. read more

Called a little over a month ago to get a quote on a male cat neuter. I was told $197 for the neuter without bloodwork. Scheduled the appointment. Got to my appointment and it jumped up to about $260. Went over what it included and they put the bloodwork down when it wasn't supposed to be. The lady looked at me like I had 3 heads when I told her the quote and explanation I was given as to why the bloodwork wasn't really important (the lady who I made the appointment with said really it was just to check if my cat had FIV but if I had other cats, all of them would have it by now so it's my call). I decided to pass on the bloodwork as she didn't tell me it was to check the health of my cat, which most vets do it to check the health. I didn't want to pay for just a FIV test since I already know my cat does not have it. So Mark comes in and tells me, and I quote: "you didn't hear that here, but we will go ahead and take it off and let you run the hospital instead of me." What the heck kind of response is that?? YOUR staff member is the one giving bad and false information. You really think I made up a story about bloodwork? The neuter ended up being $145. So, tell me how I was quoted $197 WITHOUT bloodwork, but I get there and it's $260 WITH bloodwork.. and I end up paying $145. How do the prices jump around that much? I've never been to a vet that doesn't have consistent pricing and knowledge. Seems no one knows what's going on there and definitely lack of professionalism. Will not be recommending this vet. This was the first and LAST time I will ever go here. If you're smart, look elsewhere. I've always gone to VCA and LOVE them. They care about the animals, warm and friendly environment, super knowledgeable. I didn't take my cat there this time because they wanted $500 to neuter.. my other two cats got spayed and neutered for $220 there, so I was expecting to pay around that much. But I sure as heck would have paid that $500 to avoid this place had I known this is how they operate. Lesson learned. Take your animals to VCA. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE. I got my younger cat fixed here, and all seemed fine at first, I had never been to this clinic before, they all seemed very nice. The procedure that they recommended included cauterization to "promote cell growth" and "keep infection out", which sounded like a great idea to me and so I paid over 100 dollars more upfront at the appointment or this to be included, which i thought was strange that they didn't tell me this until i had gotten there. Of course just another way Vets can get more money out of you. When my cat got out of surgery she seemed like any other normal cat after this procedure, weak and wobbly. When I took her back home, she didn't appreciate the fact that she had to wear a cone to keep her from licking the area, although it could get infected if she got to it. The next day I was looking at the area, and it stunk like rotten flesh which i figured was from the cauterization. but as I looked at the area more, it was greenish and looked very gross. So I called and let them know, to also inform them that she was doing absolutely nothing but sleeping at all times, and she seemed overly weak and not eating or drinking. which really started to concern me. I took her back in within a few days from the initial appointment, and they cleaned it up which involves REMOVING some of the dead skin around the area. After she got home from this second appointment i looked at the area, and she had almost a hole through her stomach at this point, i broke down in tears because i was so worried and could tell she was in pain. I called them to ask about the procedure and they said that she had only 1 out of 3 layers of sutures left. that she had gotten an infection and they had to remove the dead tissue. I couldn't believe what the area looked like the next day following. it was all red and puffy and oozing liquid that stunk really bad. My mom had called to let them know what to do, and they had offered to do another cauterization to help "promote cell growth" and "keep infection out". I freaked and decided I do not want to take her there again especially not to do that, which at this rate would've only given her a hole through her stomach because there was hardly anything left holding the incision in place. I took her to a different vet that i knew a lot of family members liked and they got it cleaned up and gave her medication which i continued for a little while. Within days I saw a HUGE difference and it started to look not so gross. My cat had to keep her cone on for a total of a month and a half. She used to ride in the car with me everywhere when she was younger, before her procedure and she used to love cuddling and being held. Ever since this procedure she freaks out and claws to get away from me if she goes towards the door to go outside on the porch, and she does not like being held or cuddled as much anymore. this vet could've seriously caused BIGGER issues for my animal that i could've ever imagined if i continued to go there. she is totally different as a cat and it breaks my heart. She got very sick through the whole process and i'm so glad that she is all better and that i took her to a different location. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE FOR GETTING FIXED, i would HATE for this to happen to someone else's animal. read more

We worked with this vet while fostering dogs for a local agency. I had no complaints with their service until we took one of our foster dogs in to have his foot checked. He had been hit by a car several months ago and when we picked him up to start fostering him, we noticed his foot appeared broken open and the wound smelled bad. Being a nurse, I knew that the smell was suspicious for infection. I took the dog in and the vet said that because I'm a woman, my nose is "too sensitive" and he didn't smell anything (despite the fact that the smell filled the small exam room quite easily). He then examined the foot and quickly realized it was indeed infected. Seriously dude, pulling the "woman" card? Not cool. read more

As a vet's daughter, I'm a bit hard to impress, but I've been taking my ferrets to Dr. Hein for years now (two of my little babies live with my ex in WI, so they still get to see him even though I've relocated). I had two ferrets get very ill this week, one on Thursday here in Phoenix, AZ, and a second over the weekend in Holmen, WI, so I was a bit hysterical being out of state and having a second ferret get extremely ill. Dr. Hein was more than happy to see Fulgrim and discuss the steps we should take to take care of my little guy out there on a Sunday! (And didn't seem to mind having to hear all about my poor little girl out here in Phoenix even though he's not currently treating her.) His staff has always been great about getting us in on short notice when something happens, but this was above-and-beyond. It's actually been easier to work with his office while I'm out of state than the vet I use here in Arizona. In the past, have seen Dr. Hein and his staff both at their location and when they do their Petco clinic. Also great for boarding! read more
