Had a Craigslist Special bike in the Portland area that needed to be broken down and shipped to Southern California. Mike and John at Vancouver Cyclery did a great job, carefully taking apart the vintage cruiser, padding, then shipping the unit. When it arrived at my local bike shop, they were impressed with the care taken in packing up my new bike. The moral of the story: If they pay that amount of attention to a single shipping package for someone out of state, my assumption is that they will take just of good of care for your needs when you're standing in their shop. I cannot comment on how they are with sales and repairs because after my brief experience there, I will never return. I called ahead to bring my bike in for repairs, trying to determine if I could bring it down any time or schedule a time and the employee very sarcastically said: "I can't really talk to your bike over the phone now can I? How can I tell how long it would take?" I thought about clarifying my question, that my old bike shop had us call ahead for repairs and if they would also like that courtesy, but this person was so unpleasant I just politely ended the call. We take the bike in and the employee determines it is not worth the repair, so all my follow up were answered with heavy sarcasm and condescension. My old bike shops would donate bikes like that to groups that used them to teach repair and get bikes to people in places around the world who could use them, so I asked about that-more sarcasm. I was becoming flustered because I was been treated so badly for no apparent reason and asked if I could borrow a tool to take off the basket, so I could drop off the bike somewhere-sarcastic tone and response: "I don't loan out my tools. I am done here." and dropped my bike off the rack. I wanted to use it in the store for 30 seconds, not take it home! But fine, your tool, your right. I politely thanked employee for his time and diagnosis, but I really regret it. My only satisfaction from this situation is my sister was with me who has a big family of people who ride various types of bikes, and after witnessing this disaster is no longer interested in doing business there either. So small justice but I will take it. I was trying to bring them business, my bad. It is free to be a decent human. read more

Brought in an older bike that was given to see if it just needed a tuneup or something more involved. Accessories on this thing are cumulatively worth more than the bike but they treated me as if I had a Trek or Cannondale or whatever. Service guy was waiting at the door to open it for me, said he'd be with me after "taking care of another customer" and I waited for just a few minutes. After inspection, he determined that the bike was good to go as is and didn't need to tune up or anything else. He joked that I didn't need a horn on account of the front brake noise. He opened the door again and said Hey congrats on the new bike. Enjoy it and welcome to biking. That was it. Perfect first experience and I will return (and if necessary even pay higher prices) to be taken care of. read more

Just came home from Vancouver Cyclery and I was extremely happy with my experience. Edward met us at the door to help me in with my bike. Great customer service. Spend time educating my wife and I about the new technology of biking since I took about 10 years off from the sport. He spent about an hour with us just talking and explaining anything we had questions about. Very pleased with this place so far. Very impressed with the service. Prompt greeting, fast service getting an estimate on both bikes (and being assured that one was perfectly fine in current condition, just needed a little adjustment on the fender). Plus they installed my new water bottle holder for me. Estimate for the "really needs some TLC" bike is only a week! I've had bad experiences with multiple bike shops in the past who made anti-female comments and unnecessary discussion about my weight (large, but why the heck do you think I want to be able to ride a bike??). There were no inappropriate comments, no funny looks, no talking down to me despite obviously being a "joy" rider level of expertise and not an avid commuter or racer. They pointed me toward some products that interested me, but there were no hard sells. All in all, a great experience. My fender is still off, but without paying for repairs I can't say that's surprising. Assuming the other bike does indeed return in good working order in a week, I'll be a very happy camper! read more

Do not go here for bike repair! My fiancé just took in his Gary fisher bike he never rode for a tune up and some replacement parts as someone had attempted to steal it. All he asked for was new front brakes and new tubes. First they tried to buy the bike, after they found out it was not for sale the repair costs just kept going up and up. We went to pick up the bike only to find a whole new set of problems. all of a sudden the head was damaged and also damage to the body from the chain. Someone had clearly ridden the bike HARD after "repairs" and caused further damage now they want us to pay to fix?! Generally the atmosphere as soon as you walk in is unfriendly and unprofessional . They are swindlers! read more

Service was slow and shop was not fond of working on or dealing with brands they do not carry. If you are an avid rider who needs parts and repairs this is not your shop. For a local owned shop it's not very friendly. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Took my two bikes in for an "after move" tune up. First the road bike - went in with some build up on the chain and came out the same way. Not sure how they inspected the chain with all the build up. In the past bike shops have cleaned the bike to do a top to bottom inspection and service. Here I am guessing the owner is responsible to clean the bike prior to taking it in. Second the mountain bike - was not pleased with the lack of adjustment on the disks brakes. The rear brake was almost to the limit at the lever (touching the bar before it engaged) and I got it back the exact same way. So this tells me they didn't even touch them and there was NO tune done to them, even though their work ticket charged me $20. So all in all, the $86 charged might have been excessive. read more

I should preface: I know very little about bike maintenance but I use a bike on a daily basis to commute. Moved from PA, needed a tune-up on my hybrid and was told the chainring needed replacing. They didn't have a triple chainring in stock so they told me a double would do "just fine" and I'd "barely notice the difference in speed." I said fine, since I'm a medical resident and it was the only chance I had in that month to make it to their shop during business hours. Suffice it to say, I had to wait for 40 minutes for initial service, then when I went to pick it up I had to wait again for another 30. I rode the bike home and the chain slipped off countless times. The gears grind and it goes noticeably slower. As a person with no time (my next day off was two weeks later), it's was too much of a hassle for me to go back and ask them to fix it. Next time I'll probably just go somewhere with swift service and a no-headaches reputation. read more

So here's the deal to set the tone. I've been riding bikes all my life. I have been riding as part of an MS bike team and doing triathlons for the past 20. So needless to say I was a little irritated by today. I grabbed two tubes for my tri bike on 7/17 and went home that night and installed to replace one that blew during my training ride for an Ironman that I'm doing in Sept. I was maybe 40% inflated when the tube blew. So pretty upset about that, but had bought a spare so to have on rides to change. I do my usual, add a little air as I'm tossing in the tube to mount on the rim. I also go through a routine of a couple gradual inflates so the tube can position itself. But the spare was also acting weird and had a major bubble forming and not displacing... also losing tiny amount of air. I knew this because when I went back today to let them know that I think they had a batch of bad tubes. But when I went back today I was made to feel incompetent, like I knew nothing. Told that tubes are to look like that. That I installed the tube wrong and that they and that I could bring my rim in and he would show me (for free) how to replace my tube. BS! I'm not a 9 year old dude. The guys other comment was that we ride to get flats. Really? I know how to change a damn tire. Because, yes, unfortunately along the race this can happen and I'm prepared for it. I normally allow for the 3 strike clause before I stop going to venders. This was the second occurrence. I'm speeding that process up and will not return, not recommend and redirect anyone from shopping there if this is how they treat their customers. Disrespectfully. I will post this to Yelp (which have never done) along with my bike team home page that is 100 strong. D U N with this place. Thanks for letting me rant... needed to get that one out. read more

I've been coming to these guys for several years, and their knowledge and expertise is top notch! Jesse is my favorite mechanic, because he is the only one who seems to have any sort of background in customer service; the other guys, while knowledgeable, can be rude at times. I am rating them 2 stars due to the facts I will explain; that I walked in today to a empty store, 4 clerks, and a mom and child trying to buy a bike. After the clerk got off the computer in 3 minutes, I was the only customer at the counter, I asked the clerk if they could fix my brakes on my bike and how long would they keep my bike, today is Tuesday and he said without blinking an eye I would get it back next Wednesday the 25th. Come on people, get a clue how to run a business and get some customer service and learn how to schedule maintenance appointments with priority. I understand it could have taken a few hours, maybe even overnight, but your store was empty and the two clerks behind the counter were talking about their own personal lives. This is the worst customer service and I for one will never go back or recommend you to any other person and I hope people that read this will go to Bad Monkey bikes in downtown Vancouver, they fixed my bike within 20 minutes of my arrival time. I guess Vancouver didn't want my $28.00 for 20 minutes of work. People don't waste your time on bad customer service companies. read more

Why this place is great: CUSTOMER SERVICE. Went to Vancouver Cyclery in Sept for my little boys first bike...he had an AWESOME, spoiled kid fit, but our sales guy Will was awesome about it. Tried to de-rail my little guys crazy train and get us on our way asap. Love the bike, no problems, works great! Went BACK to Vanc. Cyclery for a bike for me again, Will was super helpful....and patient. Two days later I decided I wanted to go back and exchange it for another one and it was NO problem. We swung in, they took care of everything, switched all of my accessories out at no charge and seemed happy to do it. My husband already has bike envy, I'm sure we'll be going back to get him one soon! read more

Went in for a new tire... had to listen to some old guy tell me how the tire had nothing to do with the problem flats i've been having.... UNTIL he actually LOOKED at the tire... and saw the laceration. I wasn't happy about that and I am going elsewhere with my bike to get the tubes put in. I called around and the first bike shop that I called said that they take 10 minutes to change out tubes and since I have been there before I will go back as that is the kind of service I want. read more

I have been coming here for many years and always receive courteous, professional and prompt assistance. I have a couple very old bikes that periodically need various repairs and I have tried a couple places that are closer to me but end up going back to Salmon Creek because Vancouver Cyclery does the best job. The repairs are always correct, reasonably priced and there is no pressure about having such old, uncool bikes(unlike some of the Portland shops... ), even though the show room is full of some shinny temptations... Excellent example of how to lose a potential new customer! I went in with a flat tire knowing I needed a new tube, while headed out on a bike ride with my kids. I do have an older Trek mountain bike and it is in need of a tuneup which they quickly pointed out. I have been eyeing one of those spendy electric assist commuter bikes (over $2600) so I would have been both a repair and sales customer. The repair guy proceeded to insult my bike, my setup and my intelligence about 10 times in the course of 5 minutes. Will never ever go back. read more

You have to scroll through just a few sample pics, which isn't helpful when you're looking for a specific accessory that doesn't show up as one of the pics. A truly great bike shop! Not really sure what the deal is with other reviewer, but this place is absolutely golden!!! I have taken my bike here for years for various repairs and upgrades and they have always been exceptionally friendly and courteous. Moreover, these guys know what they are doing more so than any other bike shop to which I have been. By learning about and meeting my biking needs, as opposed to the purported needs in the latest cycling magazine, these guys have saved me hundreds of dollars and made riding so much more enjoyable for me. The guys here are very friendly, but very unprofessional and seemed like they didn't know what they were doing. My husband and I brought a bike in for service, which we had previously called to confirm, and got the parts we thought we needed to DIY the fix. Upon arriving home, we discovered the parts were the incorrect sizing and called again to ask what we could do. They agreed to do an exchange, but kept the bike for several days in-shop instead of letting us take the part home. Several days later, we go to pick it up only to find that the sizing was still incorrect when we got home. (Keep in mind, we live in Camas, not Hazel Dell.) Called again, and went back to exchange the part. After the third try, we got the right size for the right part. Now, going in for a different part we had the same problem, right part but the wrong size. We've been waiting on a call for over a week to let us know they found the right part in the shop for us. Regardless of if we get the call or not, I don't think we will be returning. read more

I am in the market for a new bike to replace my old Cannondale and there was a specific Trek model I wanted to see so I called Vancouver Cyclery to ask if they had one in stock. They didn't and recommended I call one of the bike shops in Portland. Really? So, I thought I would give them another chance and decided to visit the store in person as I had not in years. I was greeted promptly by a very assertive clerk (might have been the owner) asking what I was looking for what type of bike I ride now, and was generally annoying. I told him I was going to look around and he quickly greeted a couple and after listening to him explain how they not touch a certain in stock bike because it was $1800 I decided to take my business elsewhere. I'm not the person who writes these reviews but in a very competitive retail environment I am rooting for the local business person to triumph over the internet and the box type stores and with behavior like this I can't see it happening. read more

I had a slight hesitation about using Vancouver Cyclery to install some new parts on my mountain bike because of a few negative reviews here. However, I've had 3 recent visits, with a great experience every time. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Edward did the work -- very competent and a great attitude. I also brought my daughter's chain store bike in to replace the kick stand. A couple of the guys complimented the colorful bike, even thought it clearly had not been purchased at a bike shop. I thought that was a nice touch. Finally, for the work that Vancouver Cyclery did, I thought the prices were reasonable -- in fact, a little less than I would have expected. I don't usually write Yelp reviews, but wanted to balance out the negative with my positive experience. I would definitely recommend. read more

Called them about getting my wheel re laced. Told me they could do it for $30.00 per tire. I told them I would be over in an hour because I had to come from across town from Beaverton. When I got to the store they told me that it was going to be Twice what they had said to me on the phone. Every time I've ever walked into this store I've been greeted, and asked if I needed help with anything. I've bought 2 bikes from these guys and have been stoked each time. The staff is knowledgeable and eager to help you pick the perfect bike for you. I would recommend Vancouver Cyclery for just about all your biking needs.
