Gunther is the mad scientist of electric bikes. We looked for someone, anyone to repair our Eahora fat tire full suspension bike that the kids crashed. Gunther expertly and reasonably repaired the missing hinge screw (that we looked all over for, even Eahora couldn't provide the part!), fixed the wiring the crank sheared, replaced the display, and put everything right with the bike. We are so grateful for his willingness to take on this challenge when so many of the bike shops wouldn't and when Eahora wouldn't or couldn't provide any help. Please help us keep these small repair shops in business, they are treasures under pressure from our disposable society where there are fewer and fewer little shops willing and able to embark on repairs. read more

This is a follow-up to the review written on 15 April 2024. That review ended with a timeline where Gunter said on 05 April 2024 that he had repaired my battery, but then he didn't communicate for another 9 days. Once I prompted him again, he demanded up-front payment of $125, which I paid, then he shipped the battery ... sort of ... "Sort of because -- intentionally/vindictively or not -- he did not enter the apartment number of my address (although it is the same address he had already sent the bike to). USPS therefore returned the shipment to him on 26 April 2024. He did not contact me again, but on 30 April I received a notification from USPS that a shipping label has been printed, but as of 03 May at 13:27, he has not shipped the battery again. Bottom line: I bought a bike with a battery from him, but now he is not sending me my battery back although both battery and the repair were paid for -- the fact that he is unable to ship a package to an address already in the system is no my fault. In other words, I am currently out a battery, US$125 for its repair, and I have also not been able to use a $2000 bike for many weeks now during the time he has had the battery. I am about to contact the Better Business Bureau and -- thank God for legal insurance -- have begun the process of retaining the services of an attorney. My advice now, after these additional more than two weeks of him not sending me my property: stay away as far as you can -- to a legal lay person like me, what this business is doing seems borderline criminal. read more

I was in the market for an electric bike. I had tried a number of different types of rear hub motor bikes including fat tire and mountain bikes, with different motor wattages. For some reason I wasn't quite settled on a rear hub fat tire style electric bike...something inside me kept telling me it was more like a scooter or motorcycle than a bicycle. It felt like the bike was controlling me more than I was controlling it. Not that I wouldn't have probably purchased one and enjoyed it, but for some reason and I'm not exactly sure why, I decided to see who in the Portland area was selling mid drive bikes that were affordable. (Fully aware of the specialized and similar $5,000 + bikes, I was wanting something in a more reasonable price range.) Somehow - and I'm still not sure how except by divine providence, I ended up calling up Pxcycle to ask a few questions. Gunther, the owner, answered the phone. We proceeded to have a thoughtful, informative, and quite delightful conversation about ebikes, bicycles, motorcycles, and who knows what all else for 45 minutes, and I made the decision right then that I had to ride one of his bikes. At the time I didn't realize he had designed a new model of his mid drive mountain bike called the Cascadia, and it was so new that some of the parts had not even arrived in Portland yet. He invited me to come out anyway and test ride his own personal bike, which I gladly took him up on a few days later. Just as he described, once I rode Pxcycle bike, there was no turning back. You see, Gunther has written motorcycles on trails, highways and byways, as well as mountain bikes on all different kinds of tracks, everything from a leisurely ride to single track stuff that I would never attempt. Along the way after moving to Portland, he described how he jumped into the crazy burgeoning ebike culture with both feet, along with other crazy bike builders who are connecting on the Internet to trade info about what was working. The rest is history as they say, but needless to say, the bike that Gunther builds is literally the bike he would want after all of his crazy adventures and after trying every different type of ebike motor, battery, controller, frame geometry, tire width and thickness...the list goes on and on but you get the idea. And for me at least, he totally nailed it. I really love his bikes, and they are very affordable for what you get once you look into the ebike market and learn about how it all works. Not only that, he supports his products. It's not an online purchase with online customer service. (By the way, I have yet to figure out how an online bike mechanic would actually work.) he has been at his little shop in Portland Oregon for years, and loves what he does and loves connecting with customers and supporting them. That adds an incredible value to his bicycles that you don't get with just about any other ebikes I have found in the same price range with the same specs. So to get to the end of my story....soon after my test ride, the parts came into Portland and he and his son Ben began constructing bikes and putting them out on the floor for customers. I drove over and jumped on and give it a try and sure enough, I was in love. After purchasing the bike I ordered some custom accessories and Gunther was happy to install them before I came back to pick up the bike. Now that I reread this review, I realize it sounds like I'm Gunther's cousin or something. Ha ha, not true... But honestly has been a pursuit of mine for a number of months, and to be honest there could not have been a more perfect ending to my quest then happening upon PXcycle and meeting Gunther and Ben, and purchasing a Cascadia ebike. read more

I somehow overlooked this store when I started researching ebikes and had another shop convert my Breezer. They did an ok job mechanically but sucked at communication. My battery fell off because I didn't lock it right. The shop that converted the bike looked at it, said they couldn't fix it because the circuit board broke. I spent around $100 sending the broken battery to a business in California that quoted me $900 to fix it. (The battery cost $700). Gunther ordered a new circuit board and isolated 4 damaged cells for $300. This included helping me download a monitoring app on my phone and showed me how to use it, as well as remounting the bracket, which was different from the bracket for the $350 replacement battery the original shop sold me. That one had started cutting out just after the warranty expired. Gunther explained that its cells were made with an earlier technology that was known to be problematic for years. Gunther is an old-fashioned tinkerer with deep expertise in battery and motor technology. He loves bikes and talking to cyclists and is totally dedicated to making sure your riding experience is as good as he can make it. read more

I took my bicycle to Gunther to have some work done including having the rear brakes fixed he said that the brake line wasn't long enough and replaced the master cylinder and caliper as well instead of running the line through the frame like would've been the proper way to repair it He ran the line outside the frame and held it with 2 zip ties well with normal usage the line became snagged, and the brake quit working Initially he said bring it by I'll take care of it just let me know ahead of time and when I did, he started giving me the run around about needing to schedule the work because he was slammed and when I reminded him about what he first told me he told me my bike was a piece of shit and it wasn't his fault It's a highly rated Biktrix Ultimate Duo, when I told him my bike wasn't a piece of shit, he did shitty work and would be leaving a review to warn other people. Did research on highly regarded ebike conversion kits and settled on Bafang 750 W mid drive kit. Then found Portland Electric Cycle on CL and got in touch with Gunther, the owner and expert on ebike conversions. Gunther did a conversion of my GT Grade. We spent time discussing/determining optimal battery/controller configurations and features -- shift and brake sensors to shut motor down when shifting and braking -- for long distance touring/commuting. Gunther did a superb job. I now have a fast relatively light fun road/gravel bike -- 5-20 lbs lighter than manufacturer offerings -- costing 50-70% less with a nice warranty and expert maintenance when needed. Have ridden 600 miles in two months with no problems. Very very pleased with Gunther's effort and highly recommend him. read more

I wanted an ebike with a mid motor and torque sensing for the power, efficiency and natural pedal feel that mid motors provide. I had been looking for an ebike that would suit my needs when I came a listing on craigslist for pXcycles. Mid motor ebikes tend to be more expensive than hub motor ebikes but pXcycles has the E-XC+ at a very competitive price. I gave a call to Gunther and we had a discussion about my needs and whether the E-XC would meet my needs. I am 3.5 hours from Portland so part of my decision to purchase this bike was the logistics of delivery. Gunther meet me halfway and I took delivery. I have not been disappointed by this ebike. It not only has the power I was looking for but is built really well. I've had my E-XC+600 since the Spring of 2022, after the very long wait for the shipment to arrive from China. For the most part, I like the bike quite well. Built quality is good. Components pretty good. I just have two nagging complaints which others might want to be aware of. The first, and the biggest, is the 28mph claim. The bike COULD do 28mph if it had a higher final gear. As it is, the throttle alone won't get you beyond 20mph. You must use peddle assist to get to 28. That's fine, but the fastest I've ever achieved is around 24mph, and that's spinning at a cadence few humans could sustain for long. I have no hope of ever seeing 28 with the current gear setup. Yes, 11 gears, but all skewed to the low range. I guess that's great for folks who just want to pick their way up immensely steep trails. So be aware. The second complaint is mainly just annoying and could probably be fixed with a firmware update, (though I'm not holding my breath for that). As a lifelong motorcycle and bicycle rider I take safety seriously and a big component of that is conspicuity. I always ride with my lights on front and rear in the day and night. But when you turn on the lights I guess the folks at TruckRun who make the motor and control screen assume it MUST be night time and you certainly don't want your control screen at full brightness. Wrong! And the only way you can fix this is to drill down through multiply menus to reach the Screen Brightness setting. So that's what you're force to do every time your start the bike, otherwise you can't see the control screen in full daylight. A smarter tack would have been to let the brightness default to where it was last time you started the bike. And on the controller again, resetting the Trip Odo also requires about 6 button presses. Annoying. A lot of counterintuitive things going on with the electronic controls. So those are my only complaints. I'm certainly not going to abandon the E-XC for those problems. I sure hope 2.0 fixes those things though. There's too much competition out there to leave your product with deficiencies. read more
