If you are looking for a compassionate oral surgeon who cares about patient comfort and is willing to use prescription pain meds as necessary for pain control, Dr. Clayton is not the oral surgeon for you.

He could not pull it out. He somehow broke my broken tooth. Then he used a drill to powder it. My jaw and head suffered from the vibrations. For 45 minutes, he struggled with my bloody tooth and mouth. Finally he declared victory after an hour. You would think that he would rest me from this trauma. No, before I could say anything (I could not because my tongue was numbed) he immediately started "bone crafting", which I later learned was totally unnecessary in my situation. Basically, he cut open my gum and put some bone powder there and then sewed up. I was swollen for 10 days from poor tooth pulling and this crafting. I felt gritty bone bits in my mouth and it was disgusting. I learned that bone crafting was not covered by my insurance and I paid $400 for this "crafting". Meantime I felt my tooth next to the tooth he pulled painful too. I went to see Dr. Clayton and asked him why the next tooth was hurting too. He put on a stern face and told me to see my primary dentist as the next tooth was not in his jurisdiction. My primary dentist told me the next tooth got cracked somehow and now I needed 2 tooth implants. I went to Dr. Clayton with one broken tooth and now I ended up with 2. Afraid of another tooth pulling trauma, I found another oral surgeon Dr. Wang in the same office complex, a couple of buildings away. I was shocked that it took Dr. Wang less than 10 seconds to pull out my next broken tooth. I asked Dr. Wang if he needed to do the bone craft. He told me he wanted to see how my bone healed. If it healed well, I did not need bone crafting. Later, Dr. Wang did not do the bone crafting because it was not needed. This is what an ethical doctor should do-- to care about a patient's pain and not to do unnecessary medical procedures for the doctor's self enrichment. I had another wisdom tooth bothering me. Again, in less than 10 seconds, Dr. Wang pulled it out. This is what a skilled oral surgeon should do. Learn from my experience and protect your healthy teeth.

Of course, dentists do a lot of procedures and there will always be someone who is unhappy and leave a bad review. You have to take that with a grain of salt. In my case, after I moved from SF to Pleasanton I was looking for a dentist out here. At a neighborhood party, I noticed one of my neighbors went straight to desert and started eating a plate of sugary foods. I figured he must have a good dentist, so I asked for a referral. He sent me to Drs. Andre and Judson. That was five years ago. The hygienists are fantastic, and I've been to several of them. I finally had an old filling replaced by Dr. Andre, and she did it without novocaine. I was stunned, but she was insistent it would go well. I did yelp at one point, but it was very quick, and she moved on to another part of the tooth. My 40-year-old silver is gone and replaced by a nice tooth-colored filling. She was very good during the procedure, explaining everything, giving me little breaks, and the final work feels great. And I didn't have to spend three hours drooling because of the numbing medicine. So good office staff, good hygienists, good quality work, nice folks. Not sure what else you need in a dentist.

Dr. Beckley evaluated my asymptomatic tooth and xray, and suggested the "wait and see" approach as he prefers to "treat patients not X-rays" and recommended I wait this current crown out as long as possible before jumping to an implant, as an implant may not outlive me. I am so grateful I was able to get an honest opinion and a doctor who is not ripping me off, but putting the big picture in place! So for now I will put off this front tooth extraction and implant, which will be quite an ordeal one day, but will be back in his wonderfully professional and friendly office when I eventually need it!

At the urging of his pediatric dentist and Dr. Beckley, we scheduled it about a month after our consultation. I have to admit it was a bit nerve-racking to have it done during the COVID-19 pandemic but Dr. Beckley and his staff went above and beyond to reassure us. The office is taking extra precautions to minimize the spread of germs in these challenging times. In fact, their waiting room is locked and from what I understand, only one patient is allowed in at a time. We appreciate the additional safety measures put in place. As it turns out, my child did have some unpleasant side effects from the IV anesthesia and vomited a few times after the procedure. The staff was so attentive and understanding; they really tried to make my child as comfortable as possible. Luckily, he made a speedy recovery and was practically back to normal by the next day. In that time frame, I received 3 calls from their office checking in on him (one from Dr. Beckley himself). I'm grateful for the wonderful care from everyone at Pacific Oral & Facial Surgery.
