Worse service ever. The owner is extremely unprofessional and rude. Prices are through the roof. It costs $250 for a phone consultation to discuss possible becoming a client. I was told after 24 hours send an email stating you are still interested in service along with the type of hair products I use, number of locs in my head (I haven't counted) and styles I would be interested it. After I sent an email of interest, I was sent an email refusing service because the owner wrote me I told her after having a baby, i have 4 locs that need repair, and the owner said my hair is too damaged none of the style they asked me to provide wouldnt work for me. One style was a simple bun... without ever seeing my hair. I guess she is a psychic. Regardless, I would not recommended her. She is also suspended on the national sister locks website... I've been a client with Vanity for close to a year now. Every experience I've had with the stylist at the salon has been nothing but professional, direct, an honest. I had my micro locs installed by Natasha in 2023 and have worked with the other stylists (Chyna, Chika, and Shaulene) in the salon for my maintenance every 4-6 weeks, I like a well-manicured look; they all are GREATLY SKILLED. The salon has parking, is very clean, and the environment of the salon is very professionally inviting. I recently took a workshop hosted by the salon "Micro Locs 101" (06/03/2024), as a beginner I wasn't so confident but at the end of the workshop that all turned around. I received hands on one-on-one training and instructions. The workshop was very inclusive no matter the person's skill set. I left the training not only knowing how to repair my own hair if needed but also knowing how to install / repair others. The workshop also came with one year of continuous support which is perfect for a beginner like me; with consistent practice I know I'll be good at it thanks to Vanity. My recent salon experience with Natasha at Vanity Hair Studio NYC was nothing short of a disaster! I was referred to Natasha by my MUA Makeupbylatisha and therefore had high hopes when I walked into the salon, but it quickly turned into a nightmare. I would not wish my experience on my worst enemy- Its definitely a nightmare if you spend close to $1000 in services and develop a scalp condition requiring medical attention due to Natasha not properly washing her products from my hair! Upon arrival I waited approximately 45 minutes before Natasha was able to get started. She mumbled an apology and in the same breath indicated they had no hot water - but recommended I still let her proceed with my appointment because her next availability would not be until September. Since I drove 90 minutes for my service I decided to proceed with the cold water. Perhaps i should have taken the lack of timeliness and hot water as a sign but hindsight is 20/20. After her washing my hair both my scalp and locs felt strange and heavy as if they were coated in shampoo. I took a quick look on my phone camera and it confirmed my suspicions-my locs were Sud covered. I spoke up on multiple occasions that my wash was incomplete only to be provided various excuses. I knew this was not normal.She finally stated that she has a limit on how much wash time she performs per client because long washes increases her salons overhead costs but because she hates bad reviews, she would wash my hair one more time. The remainder of my service was very rough and rushed. Natasha's professionalism was out the door. She was on the phone while she completed servicing me and the last straw was when I overheard her saying "whenever we don't have hot water, these annoying clients dispute their charge with bank"! Upon completion Natasha said she would only be able to accept cash though that hadnt been disclosed before.She said she could accompany to an atm if i did not have zelle. I'm promptly paid the fee plus my standard 20% gratuity and vowed never to return to her salon. The next day I found patches of my locs still coated in soap.After spending nearly $1000 between consultations, service costs and gratuity, plus more at the dermatologist I recommend you avoid Natasha at Vanity Hair Studio at all costs. I came here for a haircut for my sisterlocks. First I would like to thank the receptionist for helping me make the appointment. I had trouble finding the service online and she was wonderful in helping me book, very patient. Petra was my stylist and she was wonderful to work with. Let me tell you, I hate haircuts. I feel like some stylist always either cut too much or make the haircut look weird so I tend to stay away from it but I really did not like how my hair looked so I decided to try again. From beginning to end Petra made me feel at ease. She was very knowledgeable about my hair and gave me very good advice about the cut I wanted. I never felt pressured or uncertain with her. The whole time she was always explaining what she was doing and why she was doing it which was SUPER reassuring. I cannot say how happy I am that I contacted Vanity Hair studio when I finally decided to have my Sisterlocks installed. Most say to consult with 3-4 consultants when deciding on your lock install but after meeting with Natasha at my first consult I was convinced. She was very warm, informative and didn't come across as money hungry. I was so excited and felt so comfy with her after my consult I was ready to book that day but she told me "No!" Go home and think about it. That made up my mind and I have not had a single regret since. Not even 1. She is warm, comforting, easy to talk to, generous to a fault and not judgmental and knowledgeable. As I was researching sisterlocks and looking for consultants, I found this gem. The owner Natasha Watterson is wonderful. She was very thorough in explaining all about sisterlocks, microlocks and locs in general. After my consultation, I was set in my decision and ready to schedule my installation. When it's installation day, you feel nervous but excited about taking on this journey. Natasha reassures your nervousness and makes you feel more confident about it. Installation is a long process but you really get to know the integrity of her. After 15 hours, we were both exhausted but once I looked at her completed work my tiredness turned into pure joy. The first appointment was typical however making appointments was a hassle and fraught with poor communication and mistakes. After the last conversation the owner refused to hear my statement about why my appointment seemed garbled in their system. Instead of simply hearing my quick statement, which was that an earlier appointment had opened up so my later appointment had been rescheduled- and someone on their end forgot to change it in their system, she wanted me to wait while she read through whatever meandering notes were in their system. I'm not sure why I'm supposed to spend time out of my day while they decipher a trail of confusing notes? She treated me like I was a problem for trying to quickly connect the dots for her instead she wanted me to wait around (when I'm already running late to an appointment) while she reads out loud to me the notes that trace the mistakes made in their system. I'm supposed to stand around listening to her track all of their mistakes and she wouldn't listen to the one sentence that I had to say that summed it up? ‍ (my response) I did not book a consultation because I only scheduled 2 hours of re-tightening. I paid your full price for 2 hours, I did not need to be consulted on the fact that I only wanted 2 hours. If it was necessary I could have sent you a photo or you could have professionally declined my initial appointment, however I showed up and you did the 2 hours of work (and no consultation was necessary). It sounds like you're saying booking 2 hours and then paying for those 2 hours is special treatment? As you noted, I've been re-tightening my hair for many years. And, as you also noted, I started working in a new field and because of the long hours had gotten behind on my own re-tightening. I explained this to you because my schedule is so chaotic, making appointments could be difficult and I might need to reschedule. Also, during that first visit you wanted to change the loc pattern that I've had for over 15 years. So, yes, I spoke with you extensively about what pattern you were doing and why. So, as we discussed, I would call back the week of my next scheduled appointment and see if there were any openings so that I could reschedule if necessary. I did have a shoot on Sunday and needed to reschedule, I didn't think that calling several days in advance would be a problematic or special, since we'd discussed this. Maybe you weren't listening? This review is for Vanity's Jasmine Mist oil. Y'all already know the loc work at Vanity is impeccable, but during my most recent retightening, my loctician used Vanity's Jasmine Mist oil on my scalp. The scent of the oil is beautiful. It is floral, light, and clean smelling. The feel of the oil-OMG-What a game changer as far as the experience goes! The oil felt like liquid silk as it was applied directly to my scalp. The texture and consistency was excellent- it was light, smooth, refreshing and left my scalp moisturized but not shiny or greasy/oily, and my Locs look and feel moisturized and have great natural sheen! It's been almost 2 weeks since I first went to Vanity Hair Studio for a relaxer retouch and a trim. I chose Vanity Hair because I have hair issues, such as thinning, and I hate going to salons and having people stare at my head while I'm getting it done. And Vanity Hair advertises personal rooms so I thought I would try it out. I called and made an appointment for 9am, showed up on time, and she was already there. A plus for being on time. The salon is small, very clean, and modern. There are 2 separate, private rooms to be styled, a separate shampoo room, and a separate room with 2 hair dryers. I emphasize that this salon is small, meaning there is no room for other clients or kids or random people hanging around. Another plus in my book. My appointment was with the owner, Natasha, she gave me a full consultation while looking at my hair. My hair was in bad shape from being over-processed at another salon so I knew I was going to need a drastic cut. She actually cut my hair right after the consultation and before any product was applied. She also took my concerns seriously and made sure my problem areas would be covered. Another thing I really liked about the service was she told me every product she was using and why. I received a keratin shampoo help stop the breakage and super curly roller-set at the end. I also received Aveda samples before leaving, (it's an Aveda salon). Seriously, when was the last time you receives samples at a hair salon. So why four stars and not five, I purchased a $30 Yelp deal for $45 off any service. I probably should have told her this when I made the appointment but didn't bring it up until I was checking out. She told me the deal was for a roller-set only and was advertised wrong. She did give me $15 off my service though, and I'll just contact Yelp for the remainder. Overall, my short hair took some getting used to, but 2 weeks later I'm very happy with haircut. Best of all, after several shampoos there's 80-90% less breakage! Yeah! And there was no hidden/extra charges for the keratin shampoo or cut. I was told $75 for relaxer, conditioner, and trim and that is what I was quoted, (before the discount), when I went to checkout. I researched and called other salons, but after calling Vanity Hair Studio and speaking with the owner Natasha, I made my decision to come here. The consultation was scheduled for 45 minutes and Natasha spent an hour and 15 minutes discussing the history, process, what I can expect, maintenance, and follow up care and she installed sample locks. I had tons of questions from what size should I get, to color and what I can or cannot put in my hair and she answered them all. Going to vanity hair for my braid lock extensions was the best decision I have ever made. I have been struggling with natural hair that has been damaged and would not grow. I had a great experience here! The hair studio is beautiful and has private rooms. It is such a cozy intimiate experience, just you and your stylist. You really feel pampered with VIP treatment. The owner is great, she pays close attention to detail and makes sure that her clients are satisfied. The energy in this salon is great! The location is also great, it is down the street from my house but it is also close to the A, C and G trains. Also because it is on Nostrand Avenue, the 44 runs down the street. I am VERY particular with my hair and I totally trust Natasha with my hair. They also use great products, Aveda, hard to find oils and hard to get products.
