My hubby and I stopped by VanPamel's on the way home after being out too long to get home to make dinner. We've been there for braeakfast in the past. The special was Country Fried Steak. I wasn't hungry and just got a hamburger, but my hubby got the special. Now, honestly, I'm not a sausage gravy fan. But when the very nice and efficient waitress put my husbands plate down I couldn't believe how good it smelled. He ate one of his eggs, then took a bite of the country steak, and his eyes got huge. He offered me a bite and I stopped eating my hamburger. He ate his fill, I had 4 bites of his Country Fried Steak, then we brought home almost half of the steak, it was that big. We're looking forward to warming it up and make some eggs here at home tomorrow. We'll be going out of our way to get this meal again! read more

I got the chicken sandwich and toast. Toast was really amazing however when my chicken sandwich came out it was undercooked and kinda rubbery. Server was very nice and apologized and had them cook the sandwich a little more. Other than that I thought it was really good and I would recommend coming to this place. read more

One of the few places to eat in this little town that's not a sketchy bar.. not that I don't eat in sketchy bars.. Nachos were on special, and they were fantastic. We also ordered a large cheeseburger, and it was very very good. Fresh veggies, toasted bun, and nicely caramelized crunch on the burger. Definitely a place you stand out if you're not a local, but that's ok. The Hunters Breakfast looked amazing as well, will try that next time I'm in the area. This is a great diner if you find yourself in Hillman. Service is as quick as the kitchen so if it's busy, pack your patience. The vibe is very cozy and casual with tables, booths and bar seating options. Kind of a greasy spoon but a level up and more homey. The breakfast menu offerings are not fancy but they serve big portions. The coffee is good and they top it off regularly. I had The Customary, which is a 2 egg breakfast with toast, bacon and hash browns. You have options from what I got so this appeals to most. Their toast is made from thick cut, fluffy bread. It is SO good and I don't typically rave about toast at breakfast. The rest of the food was very good. We will be back! read more

I was very pleased with my lunch. They were only open until 1 o'clock and the day I went for some reason and weren't serving any of the dinner items but you could get pretty much any breakfast or lunch item. Unfortunately I didn't get to try soups which I was hoping to do because they didn't make those either. All that aside I had a club sandwich and it was really good. They used homemade bread and there was a generous portion of fries. The fries were a little underdone, so I would just ask for them to be a bit more crispy next time. The taco salad was also excellent. I will definitely go back. Let me, the server was delightful. read more

i have going there for years was the best food in town, it really saddens me to write this review the food is going down hill fast i will not be going back, I just left we had dinner for two it was 40 dollars i don't care about the money if the food was good. Soup was cold like my food hamburger steak and cold mash potatoes and fish and fries the fish was ok fries weren't cooked it was a total waist of money it wouldn't have been so bad except i have been in the food service for almost 40 years this was an easy meal to cook I sat by the bathroom cook went in used it didn't wash his hands they were dirty when he came out id rather go to McDonald's it would have been better read more

My husband and I stopped here as we were up at our cabin. I had the skillet which was VERY good and a huge portion. My husband got the sportsman which was also a huge portion. We were really pleased with the food we ordered. Service was good and didn't wait that long. read more

Ok folks! Im from ann arbor area - and it was very clear that we were not quite welcome here. Fake smiles, semi rude etc. so the food was ok. Asked for xtra crispy hash browns but apparently that's impossible. Biscuits and gravy were great. Time for service delivery to the table was over 25 minutes with a small crowd in the restaurant. All in all - i would go back - with some local friends. Food prices are low and the portions are big. read more

Whenever I am in the mood for country fried steak, this is where I go. They have the best I've ever ever had. Huge portions and very tasty. It is a classic small town diner, and the staff is very friendly. Five stars because this place just is what it's supposed to be. But I do have a question. If you aren't a local expect somewhat of a chilly reception. The server was efficient but not friendly. She was more interested in catching up on gossip than Making sure we were taken care of. The food was okay but nothing extraordinary. We had a big cookie which looked delicious but tasted processed and like it was made with lots of shortening. The atmosphere was clean and homey. What a lovely place! My husband and I stopped here for lunch yesterday after some antique shopping. Small and unassuming on the outside but wholly comforting and friendly inside! We could tell this was this small towns favorite place. Some guests came in and didn't even have to order. The staff just knew;) We had the turkey reuben and a mushroom swiss burger. We shared fries..our server told us, "We have big portions here!". And she was not lying! Fresh roasted turkey on the reuben and the sauerkraut was perfectly seasoned. My husband, who has never met a burger he couldn't finish, almost could not! The fries were super yummy and hot!
